Mafuyu is away at boarding school to clean up her thugish ways and runs into the man who influenced her, who is now a teacher, Takaomi Saeki. She has finally made her first friend, Hayasaka, a rather dense thug. Together they are the Public Morals Club!

This is a review of volumes 17-18 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Oresama Teacher vol 17-18... WOW! With vol 17 we end a long running story arc with the ninja, Shinobu Yui, the student council president's spy in the Public Morals Club. Then in vol 18 we get the most magnificent twist to this entire story!

Just a second, let me talk about Yui... this guy has been the butt of many a gag about ninja... but guys, he's the real deal! He gets the dirt on Mafuyu and totally forces her to step up her game. In classic Mafuyu fashion she goes all out and funnily Hayasaka totally knows what she's going to do! An unexpected turn saves Mafuyu from making a huge mistake in her friendship. Izumi Tsubaki totally knows what she is about, its so, so, so, so good! I just loved how this entire end to vol 17 built up to the twist in vol 18.

And really vol 18 takes everything to the next level! I kid you not... I've read 17 volumes of this manga through the years because Izumi Tsubaki keeps reinventing her series and keeping readers on their toes... and she does it again! We meet the final student council foe, Runa Momochi, and she is the biggest and baddest yet. She makes serious in roads to killing the Public Morals Club than ever before in a most unexpected way (yes, considering how unexpected Oresama Teacher gets it is even MORE unexpected). In the interim we learn the enemy may not be so clear. That's all I'm going to say about it... but WOW!

As you can see I'm LOVING Oresama Teacher vol 17-18... the series is on fire too! If you haven't started it yet I think its high time you do. The thing is even though this is shoujo it is totally unlike any shoujo I've ever read. The characters remain so true to who they are, so consistently.

I was totally pumped too when I saw Mafuyu goes home and we get the most darling of home visits! First, Kangawa and Mafuyu's relationship is really developed in vol 17?! It turned into this whole date and was so cute and fun. Then Maizono gets a total spotlight! Waaaaay more than the ropes loving we always get... its all connected to Yui and I was totally floored by the turn of events.

When we get to all the new stuff in vol 18 I just couldn't see any of this coming. Sure, we get more and more clarity on Miyabi Hanabusa as student council president. And I've always wondered about him and his goons. But yeah, nothing is as it seems, nothing! The clues were there through all 17 volumes too. That is just so masterful on Izumi Tsubaki's part.

In Oresama Teacher vol 17-18 the ways things resolve with Yui... Oresama Teacher has always done FRIENDSHIPS so, so well... but GAHHHHHHH this with Hayasaka and Yui... WOW! I know I keep saying that but it just made me bleed. And Mafuyu... this was the first time that she faltered. For some reason that made the feels even more intense. We can't be perfect all the time and that's okay... that's why we have friends.

And there is this whole other level of friendship that we learn about in these two volumes within the student council. It explains soooooo much about Oresama Teacher. Really if you want an almost zero romance manga to read this is what you need because its all about friendships baby! Seriously its so beautiful and I just love them all and want all the thugs to be friends.

From vol 17 to vol 18 we see a shift in the cover art. I feel like this new, fresher look fits perfectly as the entire series is turned on its head with these twists. Oresama Teacher vol 17-18 are the bridge volumes that put to rest one story arc and start a new one with the biggest and baddest bang possible.

Part of what made the dissolving friendships so powerful in vol 17 was the art. Yui's face... OMG! I just can't. It totally killed my heart. And Hayasaka's actions! And that photo! It is a visual masterpiece that gives a reader of the series so much satisfaction.

Oresama Teacher vol 17-18 really proves how worthwhile its been for me to read this manga series. It highlights everything I love about Oresama Teacher and Mafuyu's journey at her new school. I can't wait to see what's going on with her school and home gangs and where Takaomi Saeki and his own troubles fit into the future.

In Summary

The mystery behind the blackmail letters is revealed! Tsubaki-sensei creates great tension with Yui’s torn loyalties between the Public Morals Club and Miyabi, but the ultimate resolution seems too quick and convenient. Still, the plot remains engaging with Momochi awaiting her turn to take on the Public Morals Club and new questions concerning Hayasaka. Plus, the bet for Midorigaoka High School looks as if it has an interesting new facet, which is likely to come into play when Momochi makes her move.

The Review

Yui dominates this volume, and the opening chapter recaps recent events as seen through Yui’s point of view. Interestingly, Mafuyu’s run-in with West High’s Sakurada, which I’d dismissed as a random cameo, turns out to have major significance for this arc. When the action moves forward once more, Yui is dealing with conflicting feelings about the Public Morals Club while Mafuyu and Hayasaka are desperately trying to locate him.

The brawl that ultimately erupts between Mafuyu and Yui has been a long time coming. Yui joined the Public Morals Club as Miyabi’s spy, and although he’s grown close to Mafuyu and Hayasaka, Yui’s loyalty to Miyabi never wavered. The surprising twist to this scenario is the emergence of Yui the Ninja. His obsession with ninjas has been a running joke, and although he is good with a shuriken, his stealth ability is nonexistent–or so we thought. As it turns out, he actually does have ninja powers, but, like Ayabe’s superstrength, they only manifest under certain conditions. That plus the secret behind the blackmail letters to the Public Morals Club creates terrific tension up till the moment Mafuyu confronts him.

The resolution, unfortunately, is a bit too quick and easy. Tsubaki-sensei reveals the reason behind Yui’s connection to Miyabi, but it doesn’t jibe very well with what we’ve seen of his personality over the course of this series. Also, given the depth of his betrayal to the Public Morals Club, Mafuyu and Hayasaka seem extremely quick to forgive and reaccept him. At any rate, the arc concludes with all of Yui’s secrets out, and the Public Morals Club restored. However, that means Student Council Member Momochi is still lurking in the wings, and a scene between her and Miyabi hints that perhaps she’s got a hold on him and not the other way around. In addition, Tsubaki-sensei is building an air of mystery around Hayasaka, and between him and Momochi, there are definitely enough unanswered questions to keep readers interested.

The volume concludes with the story shifting gears away from intrigue with a summer break interlude. East and West High students populate the page once more, and Tsubaki-sensei offers some lighthearted comedy with Mafuyu trying to convince her old friends she’s a popular girl at her new school.

Lots of extras in this volume, including Characters and Story Thus Far, 4-panel comics, and a rather detailed set of character profiles on the Midorigaoka students. Hojo’s height appears to be erroneously listed as 6’6″ though. (That would make her taller than Takaomi!)

When it comes to this series, for me its either okay or just so so. But at times it has its moments. I like the covers for each volume though.
