I've been meaning to get this graphic novel for such a long time. It's such an awesome graphic novel about transitioning, identity, queerness, friendship, and magic. Now that I've read this first volume, I'm exited to get my hands on the second. CW: dead naming, transphobia, unsupportive parents in transitioning, religious bigotry.

Magical Boy follows the story of Max, a teenager, who is trans and wants to transition. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the support of his mother or a lot of peers who constantly dead name him and question his identity. Max has always had the gift to see people's aura's based on their ability to be open and kind to others; however, he begins to notice these evil creatures that begin to suck the aura's of humans. Long story short, Max finds out that it is his job to keep these beings at bay because he is a part of a long line of family members who are destined to protect earth. A great portion of this gave me Sailor Moon vibes, but with more complex themes as it brings forth conversations about being trans, religious bigotry, friendship, community, and more. Max was such a joy to get to know. Kao makes him well rounded. Readers see this development when they notice Max not only having to deal with the every day struggles of being a teenager, but also attempting to meet the expectations of a mother who wants him to be this amazing magical hero, but refuses to acknowledge his identity. For this very reason, I was happy that Max had such an amazing best friend and two other friends that he meets along the way. The plot was fast paced and interesting. It ended in a cliff hanger that made me want to automatically check out the second volume. My only problem with this was the text placement. I read a lot of graphic novels and comics so text placement is a huge thing for me. In some of the panels, the text placement was awkward and off so it was hard to determine what order to read in. Unfortunately, when this happens it usually takes the reader out of the story and that happened to me a couple of times. I was able to figure it out; however, it did take me out of the story. Overall, this was a good start. I'm looking forward to everything we'll see in volume 2.

Max has magical powers but we all know the REAL magic is the friendships we made and the confidence we gained and the genders we respected and the monsters we hunted along the way!

Very excited for book 2.

This book tackled the pressures and anxieties of transitioning in a very interesting way, a way that I think is just as educational as it is entertaining. I love that more and more graphic novels are being published with a goal of introducing a more diverse lineup of protagonists. A major criticism of mine is not about the actual content, but the format it is in. The paneling of the comic can be frustrating for me, as sometimes the dynamic style makes it difficult to follow conversations and action. It makes the pages look very engaging at a glance, but headache inducing when trying to casually read. Another small issue is that the antagonistic characters can feel almost too exaggerated and corny. I recommend it, but keep in mind it isn't perfect. I might try reading volume 2, as overall it was an enjoyable experience.

I can't believe that this is over! I had so much fun reading Magical Boy. Every moment was a blast. It was so perfectly crafted, written and drawn. The characters are sensational. The comedy is hilarious, the angst is heartbreaking, and you can feel the highs and triumphs. If you're looking for great LGBT representation mixed with a great story, then Magical Boy is perfect.

I'm not crying, you're crying.

This is an episodic comic/graphical novel hosted on Tapas. It has 31 story episodes and 27 of which you need to 'unlock' with 'ink' for 333 a single episode. You can earn ink for free by filling out surveys (which will take you forever) or buy ink via the app, so it'll be around a tenner to get all the episodes unlocked, which is a fair price. I'm not sure if there's a clever way to unlock them all at once as I'm not super familiar with Tapas and only joined specifically to read Magical Boy.

There are some episodes that really hit you in the feels, especially if you're queer or ever had difficulty being accepted (particularly by parents), and the episodes with the most distressing stuff have warnings at the start. That art is exceptional and while there were a couple of typos that's easily forgiven for such a great comic.

It is a really beautiful story and so inspiring; I hope there's one day a physical copy printed or just a follow up that details Max's life as he gets older.

Slay for gay. It was kinda hard to read because the panels were all in odd positions sometimes.

EDIT: I considered going down a star having found out that this is 'technically' YA, but, honestly, my beef isn't with the novel so much as it is with the marketing. If something is tonally appropriate for middle grade, I think it should just be labeled that way; it's a marketing thing, not a book thing. Going down to 3.5 in my head but I'll leave my original review because it otherwise stands.

***

A really cute, obviously necessary start to trans middle grade graphic novels.

I knew when I started reading Magical Boy that it wasn't 100% for me, but I'm glad I gave it a shot and I might still read the second book just to get the resolution. I likely wouldn't continue if we were talking 3+ more volumes, but this is absolutely readable for what it is and I'm guessing young kids would really, really like it. The baby transsexual in me is certainly happy.

We could spend several hours talking about the good aspects of the book-- bright, popping color; a realistic transmasc protagonist; supportive friends; finally, a trans/masculine magical girl story! In short: it delivers on the simplistic, friendship-is-magic vibe of traditional magical girl manga/anime with a transmasc protagonist, and if that's exactly what you want, that's exactly what you'll get.

I can't help being a picky reader, though, and so I had two small complaints (which will proceed to take up my entire review. goddamnit.) The first was the general tropiness-- hear me out! It took a lot of thinking to consider this a genuine negative rather than simply a preference, but I felt as though the tropes were so simplified that they ran the risk of muddying the book's ideas.

To get specific, we have So hopefully you see why this was a big enough issue to me to mention as a legitimate detractment, not just a personal preference of a trope I may not enjoy.

I actually quite like some variants on this trope, specifically We're just seeing this nuanceless consequenceless situation go off without a hitch... and, I dunno, that bothered me.

In theory I also would have liked some nuance to the "I'm a trans man so I don't want to be feminine" idea at the core of the book-- not every trans man will physically transition in every way, and it's not technically even possible to give up all remnants of 'femininity', so this runs the risk of essentially transplanting binary gender roles to trans people-- like saying, "oh, all this rigid gender stuff is fine, we just have to disconnect the physical aspects of sex from it (good luck with that BTW)!" Again, I understand this is a kids' book and I don't think it's that deep... but, at the same time, I find myself not wanting to take chances when talking to children about gender.

Also worth noting, while I'm at it, that I feel bad for the author. I say this every time I do or don't like an LGBT book. It should not be Kao's fucking job to write The Least Problematic Middle Grade Trans Book Ever. This kind of book should be a dime a dozen. I should have chucked this the second I saw it 'wasn't for me'. It is unbelievably frustrating to think that this poor guy, writing TWs for his books and adding disclaimers left and right, might feel like he failed readers just because he is the only one writing this. Again: so many of my issues would be solved if there were just other books to read. I need publishers (who I guess I'm assuming are reading my GR reviews now?) to start getting serious about publishing LGBT books, because we cannot fucking wait.

Okay. On to the other thing, which is (I ready myself for the rotten eggs and tomatoes) professionalism, as always. I get my panties in a twist when the panels are confusingly arranged, or the speech bubbles don't make sense, or there's more text than art on a given page. These are just signs of an amateur artist, though, and I think if I came to a webcomic-turned-GN looking for pro art I'd be an ass. Is there a lot of infodumping? Yes. Is the plot immensely simple? It sure is. Does this make me want to knock an entire star off an otherwise gorgeous book? Take a look at the rating and see for yourself.

(I took off half a star.)

SO: final thoughts. I wasn't 100% into this book, but I wouldn't say that it was bad at all. I'd recommend it to people who read this review and, quite rightfully, go "yeah I don't care about any of that shit." I think it's an awesome start to a hopefully long line of trans middle grade GNs, and I hope trans magical girl fans find what they're looking for here! Many many thanks to The Kao for giving us this one.

"Is this the gay agenda?"
"Yes."
.
Trama:

TW: misgendering & prejudice, internalized homophobia & general homophobia
4.5

I love this queer magical being story! It was definitely painful at times to see the obstacles and dysphoria Max had to deal with, but watching him embrace himself and grow into the magical boy he is was so satisfying! I also really loved the design of the bugs.

If there is a Jen fan club im joining it, if Jen needs a best friend im volunteering,
Managed to avoid some really annoying tropes and overall a sweet queer coming of age. I wish the cliffhanger end was a little more dramatic and less rushed. read this in a matter of hours I love graphic novels

cw: transphobia, deadnaming, misgendering, unaccepting parent

This was a really fun read! A clever twist on the magical girl genre with nice art and an interesting storyline with a diverse cast of characters. Max is deadnamed and misgendered a lot, both purposely and a few innocent mistakes. His deadname is blurred out each time and there is usually a discussion about misgendering at least a page after it happens, but it does happen a lot throughout the book, so keep that in mind. I loved how the magical outfit slowly turned more into something Max is comfortable in the more times he transforms and the final look is really cool!

I loved this. It was so cute & fun & relatable & that’s all I ask if the books I read, so perfect for me! Hate that Max had to deal w being misgendered/deadnamed all the time but I liked how his deadname was always blurred out. V cool. Also, the fit was so cool at the end I’m excited to read the second part.

I could finally read all of this! About Max who is a boy, or well he wants to be that, and how people react to it, how he struggles with his new role as magical boy because of the clothes, the make-up, the heels, everything, how he tries to make his parents understand. I loved seeing him embrace the magical part more and I love seeing the outfit and all the other parts of it slowly change with each transformation. Less and less girly and more and more boy.
I loved his friends and seeing the group grow. The monsters were scary/awesome.
I did love, hopefully that is right, how Max' old name is censored.
Hopefully mom gets better in the next book, while I did love the dad because he understood, he actually tried. But mom is still in her OMG you need to be a lady. I can understand it may be hard, but you have a son now.

It makes me sad that this book perpetuates stereotypes of masculinity and femininity, vilifies mothers, promotes the use of binders, and implies that feminine qualities are necessarily frilly and undesirable. It makes me think of a South African proverb often repeated by Trevor Noah, "When you strike a woman, you strike a rock". Being strong is the essence of femininity, not its opposite. We should be defying stereotypes, not reinforcing them.

And the characters are one dimensional.

DNF. Love the concept so, so much but unfortunately I am very arachnophobic and the antagonists are fantastical spider creatures. I tried but I couldn't power through them.

This was an incredibly wholesome take on this genre and I absolutely LOVED the concept of it! A very unique take on coming out, transitioning, queerness and friendship shown in such a positive light while still showing the struggles and hardships of identity. I am hype to read the conclusion ❤️🥰❤️

Just now getting around to write a quick review on this book to get my thoughts out.

Not gonna lie, Magical Boy seemed a little too cheesy for my taste. Maybe I just wasn’t into some of the humor? I also felt as if some of the characters didn’t get the development they needed other Max. Mac was definitely an enjoyable and relatable character, but I would have loved to seen more with some of his other friends he made a long the way. Lastly, the info dumping and formatting of the comic threw me off quite a bit, where I had to reread a couple parts several times.

Despite these few flaws however, I honestly thought this graphic novel was super cute despite the cheesiness! The art style was enjoyable to look at and most of the characters were super entertaining. Max’s development throughout the book made me feel warm and fuzzy and made me almost teary eyed near the end of the book!

I’ll definitely be giving volume two a shot when that comes out for sure! Overall a quick and fantastic graphic novel you can definitely get through in one sitting!

This was a really fun read! I’m so glad I picked it up.

The main reason I’m leaning more towards a 3 instead of a 4 is that I think this story will be largely forgettable for me in a short while. It was chaotic and fun, but it didn’t have enough to truly stick in my memory.

Also. The background art left A LOT to be desired. This used a lot of white space or simple backgrounds and it just took away from the experience for me. I like artwork that has more detail.

The magical boy transformation for Max was great tho! Seeing him get closer and closer to his magical boy final form was wonderful. He’s so cute! Bless his heart. Even when he wanted to find ways to be seen as “tough” he made my heart warm. He’s great.

Anyway. I probably will read vol 2, so I can see the conclusion of the story. Maybe even a resolution to the Tobi plot line? 👀

This was a thoroughly enjoyable, fast-paced read filled with humour. Max is a loveable character with a gang of entertaining side characters around him. I devoured this book in a single sitting and am looking forward to volume 2.

My one major critique is that the whole book was one note. The action was always dialed up to 11 and the story felt rushed in places. I wish it would step back once in a while to delve deeper into some topics that require some nuance and pondering, and provide some much needed levels of excitement.

Another critique is that it was not always easy to follow the word bubbles across the page and I sometimes read things out of order (and therefore context).

I got this book from a book fair a few years back, and I really loved it! I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did, but now I really want the second book! I'm currently re-reading it. It left off on a cliffhanger and I am sad because I don't have the next book. I would recommend this book if you like mangas and books like that or if you like fiction books or adventure. Warning though, it does have a few curse words but I got it from the book fair, so it isn't too bad. I really recommend this book! The cliffhanger in this book is just rretereetyhderrftctfeyhcgdjv. There is no other way to explain it.

This was a good time for me. Sadly, there is a lot of dead naming for our trans character here, so please approach with caution! The story is really fun, and I had a good time. Need to pick up the next installment in the story.
