Discusses plants of use to textile artists for fibers, dyes, natural soaps, fragrances and textile tools, and describes how to plan and create a garden
An excellent resource. I'm not so much interested in growing the type of garden she provides info about in the book, but this book proved to be an excellent source of historical information about what sorts of plants and such have been used for dying various types of fibers. Definitely a keeper for my reference library.
While I already have my seeds for this year's garden this was an excellent read and has me already excited for hunting down more plants to try out. Wonderful mix of science, history, and practical knowledge that has me sending fun fact update to my (very confused) mother all night and day. Very glad this is one I purchased rather than borrowed so I can reference it for years to come!
An excellent book for fiber-curious gardeners. There are very few books with information for home gardeners on growing and processing fiber plants (as opposed to animals), so this one is invaluable.
I'm sure I'm coming pretty late to this party, but wow what a good treatise on dyeing, plants and growing them. Buchanan gives historical synopsis for most of the dye techniques as well as some detailed plant histories and sources. There is even a very basic chemistry lesson on how dyeing works. Excellent book for beginners and experienced fibre artists alike I suspect, as the layout of the book lends itself to reference type questions.
Rita Buchanan is knowledgeable and a great writer. She demystifies growing so many different plants for dye, fiber and even soap. Not exhaustive, but a great overview of many of the best plants for fibre fun!
