Heather Lovelace

"Mundane attempt, Heather." Jason Penhallow had her pinned to the ground, her arms behind her back and her face digging into the practice mat. His voice was smug. "That was the oldest trick in the Codex - and you, unsurprisingly, fell for it."

Heather snorted in disgust and tried to get up, but he shoved her back down. "Arse," she spat out, blowing strands of her ice blonde hair out of her face. Jason chuckled.
"I whipped yours?" he questioned innocently. She closed her eyes in exasperation.
"You know what I meant," she ground out. He laughed again. Obviously being put in charge of her training amused him greatly. Heather was not as amused. Mainly because her entire body was aching from repetitive hits, her upper lip stinging where the blade of Jason's practice blade had nipped her.

"I didn't expect you to strangle me," she continued, whilst thinking of some way to dislodge him. She felt Jason laugh rather than heard him.
"I doubt anyone expects someone to strangle them, Heather, but great excuse," he replied, sounding even more amused. "And in case you were thinking of using your knee to kick me where it hurts, I have my seraph blade positioned just below your thigh. Tough luck."

She relaxed her body, realising that once again her tension and lack of subtly had given her away. "I give up. Let's just leave things here for today."
Jason's tone turned serious. "Ah, I don't think so! You haven't perfected any of the sets I was instructed to take you through, not to mention we have yet to go through knife throwing-"

"I said, we're done !" Heather, quick as a whip, flipped herself over - slamming Jason against the practice mat, catching him by surprise. Twisting his wrist, ignoring his hissed intake of breath, she freed her arms and then whirled so that she was holding her blade against his throat. When she was satisfied that he had acknowledged her victory, she released her hold on him and with a salute, exited the room.

Heather Lovelace

Heather walked into the Institute kitchen and spotted Sara Lightwood doing a most unlike-Sara thing...flipping pancakes. Heather shook her head, but the apparition did not fade.

"Wow." Heather raised an eyebrow. "Is there something going on that I didn't know about?" Sara turned around, rolling her eyes at Heather.

"You are so busted!" Lucy jumped, startled then she cursed under her breath. She slowly turned around, "I finally caught you Lucinda Morgenstern" Lucy narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms at the use of her full name, "what do you want Jake?" Jacob Blackwell smirked at her, "should't I be the one asking you that?" he asked in his annoyingly nasal voice, "after all YOU are the one that broke into my room." Now it was Lucy's turn to smirk, "if you call that 'breaking in' then you really need someone to update you on the meaning of 'breaking and entering' the wards in here are so weak all I had to do was use a simple opening rune and víola. Besides if you hadn't stole my seraph blade in the first place then I wouldn't have needed to be here anyway." Jake wasn't smirking now he actually looked more outraged than anything. "Not this nonsense again I told you three weeks ago that I don't have your blade!" Lucy raised her eyebrow giving him an 'oh really?' look before leaning down and grabbing something out of her boot. She held out her hand showing him the missing seraph blade in question. Jake went pale, "where did you find that?" Lucy shook her head at him and gave him a pitying glance, "look Jake you are a decent guy most of the time, but seriously GET OVER IT we went out like twice just because you take my stuff doesn't mean I'm going to fall in love with you all of a sudden." Jake looked like a dying fish, his mouth opening and closing without making a sound. "W-w-who told you?" Lucy rolled her eyes seeing that her words weren't sinking in at all, "Meghan told me, and don't think I didn't find part of that lesser demon that I slew last month in you desk." Lucy shook her head in disgust and left the room.

*glares* "What? A girl can't make some pancakes in peace?"

Heather sauntered over to her with a mocking expression on her face. "Course, however you're no normal girl."

Did she have to bring that up every minute? "Whatever."

A gentle expression appeared on Heather's face "Hey, I know finding out about this world has been hard on you. Just give it some time. It gets better. Trust me."

I looked at her. So far, she's the nicest person I'd talked to here. Maybe I should try to be nicer..

"Oh, and you're pancakes are burning." Heather says with a smirk.

I turn back to my now blackened pancakes with smoke spiraling upward. "Gah!" I exclaimed, rushing to turn off the stove. I poured water on my poor pancakes, and steam rushed into my face.

As I sputtered trying to wipe my now damp face with a towel, I hear a voice behind me.

"That's a good look for you." Smirked Jason Penhallow.

"But I don't get why I have to move!" Lucy whined as Meghan helped her pack. "Because the Clave thinks Jake could be dangerous, he is seriously obsessed with you. Anyway you're lucky, I hear Jason Penhallow is a total hottie."

Lucy rolled her eyes and jumped off the bed to help Meghan, "But i don't get why I have to go to their Institute! Everyone who has any connection to the Clave knows that's where the misfits get sent, so why am I getting sent there?! I can handle Jake he just needs to get it through his think head that I will never be into him like that." Meghan stared at her the disbelief in her eyes evident, "You can't be serious Luce! Every guy that gets near you ends up with a black eye!" Lucy flinched remembering the looks of fear some of Jake's victims flashed her before they hurried away.

Her shoulders slumped, "I guess your right Meg, but why do I have to move to THAT Institute?! ANY other Institute would've been fine! Every time I think about that Heather Lovelace it gets my blood boiling, that prissy stuck up- ow! What was that for?" Lucy rubbed the spot where Meghan had just punched her.

"I just don't appreciate your dirty mouth," she stuck her tongue out at Lucy. "Anyway I think you might like her if you get to know her, my Dad said that you two have the best assessment scores for female shadowhunters our age."

Lucy heaved a big sigh before zipping up her duffel bag and making sure all her weapons were secure. "I'm just gonna miss you is all, we've known each other forever and now I'm suddenly getting sent to 'study abroad', who knows when we'll see each other again?"

Meghan came over and hugged Lucy, "I don't know maybe I can convince Dad to let me join you," she smiled but they both knew it was a long shot. Meghan's brows furrowed, "I wonder why you have to take Church with you though, I say good riddance, that nasty little fur ball hates me and the feeling is mutual but it's still odd." Lucy nodded, it was odd that she was taking a cat with her to another Institute.

"Whatever, hey where is Church anyway?" As they talked they had been slowly walking towards the front doors and waiting patiently (which was uncharacteristic for him) was Church, he looked at her and it was as if he was saying 'are you ready to leave or not?'

"I guess this is goodbye," Lucy leaned over and awkwardly hugged Meghan again. "When I come back I'll bring you a souvenir , OK?" Meghan's lower lip was trembling she nodded and looked away. Lucy nodded and turned to walk out the door, Church stalked after her and the doors to the Institute closed behind them.

Heather lets out an exaggerated sigh and turns around, hand on hip. "You're one to talk, Jason." The side of Heather's mouth curls as she remembers their practice session. "Lying stunned on the floor is a good look for you."
Jason's eyes narrow. "What can I say? I always look devastatingly attractive no matter what position I'm in-"

"Oh, cut it out, Jason." London Wayland stalks into the kitchen, though halting when she sniffs the air. "Is something burning?"
Sara blushed seven shades of red. "Umm...that would be the pancakes."
"I'll help you clean it up," offered Heather, taking the skillet from Sara's outstretch hand and 'accidently' whacks Jason over the head with it. "Oops."

Jason whirls on London. "That's it! I refuse to be in charge of her training any longer!"
"Took you long enough," mutters Heather under her breath. Sara smirks and bites back a laugh. The muscle in Jason's jaw twitches.

"Why don't we all just calm down?" suggests London, always the voice of reason. "Jason - Kyle needs you help in the weaponries room." Jason looks as if he is about to argue the point, but London quells him with a look. "Now."

Heather wiggles her fingers at Jason as he sulks to the weapons room. "Bye bye!" she says with a smirk. I try to hold back my laughter, but do not succeed. A choked laugh slips from my lips, and Jason glares at me. I feel my stomach drop and the smile dies on my lips. But luckily he continues his walk out the door.

I breathe a sigh of relief. I don't know how Heather stands training with him. He creeps me out and he's a total ass.

I force a smile and look at Heather and London. "Pancakes?" I ask them innocently.

They a stare at me for a moment and then burst out laughing. I eventually join in, not having to force it at all.

"Gosh," Heather says, taking a seat on one of the stool that line the kitchen bench. "What an arse - I swear, London," Heather smiles at Sara when she hands Heather a cup of coffee, "I refuse to train with that nasty piece of work."
London sighs, running a hand through her hair. "I have no choice, Heather. He's the only one who isn't being used by the Clave at the moment. Even Kyle's been called on to tighten security."

"More demon breakouts?" asks Sara, who had ditched the pancakes in favour of instant waffles, which she was heating up in the microwave. London nodded bleakly.
"There HAS to be someone else," moans Heather, cradling her coffee mug. "I can't take much more of his smug cat-like attitude. He reminds me of that prat Lucy Morgentstern's cat Church - always smug, always superior."
"I think he likes you," smiles London. "Jason isn't that..."
"Wicked? Full of smart-alec innuendo commentary?" Heather supplies.
"I was going to say open. He isn't that open and carefree with everyone. He hasn't been that same since his parents were killed by that demon."

"Well," huffs Heather. "I think he's possessed."
"It would explain a lot," adds Sara with a smile.

"I wonder if they know I'm coming yet, I know that Meg's dad said they would be told as late as possible just in case, but still how awkward would it be to show up and for then not to know. 'Hello, I know we dont like each other but hey know we have to live together!' yeah right" Lucy snorted and scratched Church's head absently. Church had his eyes closed and was purring up a storm, Lucy sighed "at least someone is happy right now."

Lucy was currently sitting in the backseat of a car with blacked out windows with Church laying on her lap. The cars destination was the Wayland Institute, which was well known for taking in odd shadowhunters.

Lucy slumped against the seat," any idea why you're coming with me? Oh by the Angel of course not! You're a cat! Get it together Lucy." Lucy shook her head back and forth trying to clear it.

There was a tap from the small window separating the front and back of the car," we'll arrive soon Miss" Lucy nodded and the driver turned around again.

"I wonder what they'll do about my training...." Lucy mused. She remembered what Meghan's dad had said, "For your own protection the Clave will notify the Waylands as close to the last minute as possible, we wouldn't want anything to happen to you..." He trailed offfor a minute they both knew he was talking about Jake. He shook his head and continued, "It will be up to them what to do about the rest of your training, and I don't know if the other shadowhunters will know you're coming until you're there. At the very least their daughter London will know."

Lucy made a face and Mr. Herondale just shook his head in a 'you'll never understand' kind of way. "So that's it? I'm just being shipped off? I didn't DO anything!" He cut her off before she could continue her rant," look I now you don't want to leave but the Clave is ordering it so...... You should just go get Meghan to help you pack, by the way Church is going with you." Lucy was quickly ushered out of the office before she could ask any questions.

Lucy sighed again still rubbing Church's back. "I wonder what their Institute will look like."

Heather was just biting into a (not burnt) waffle, grinning as Sara dumped her batched of failed pancakes in the bin, when Kyle walked into the kitchen.

Kyle was London's fiance, and he looked like a cross between Chris Hemsworth and a ninja. So in other words, he was blonde, muscular, hot, and was always dressed in black with a weapon (or two...or three) on his person. He comes over, yawning - putting his arm around London to give her a brief hug.

"How's it goin?" he asks good-naturedly, though he frowns suddenly, adding, "Is something burni-"
"YES!" Sara bites into a waffle, sending Kyle the evil-eye. "Yes, something was burning, but it's over now. Over. Completely done for and ridiculed."
"O-kay." Kyle shrugs. "I just came in to inform all you lovely ladies that Lucky Morgenstern will be arriving today-"

"For a visit?" Heather's question falls unanswered. Kyle is suddenly busy examining the toaster. "Please tell me she isn't staying here with us. Please. Not another stuck-up..."
"Heather." London's voice is stern. "I know you and her have your differences-"
"Differences?" Heather's is incredulous. "We are two entirely different LIFEFORMS."
"You really want to see World War three, don't you?" asks Sara, shaking her head. "It's bad enough having Jason and Heather under one roof - now you have to go and add Lucy?"

"I didn't really have a choice!" Kyle argues, throwing up his hands. "The girl's being stalked by her ex-"

Heather snorts, choking on the coffee she was sipping. "She's moving half-way across the world because her ex isn't dropping his pursuit of her? Are you freaking kidding me?! Why can't she just send him a text - you know, get a police order for restraint or something? Fleeing the country seems kinda extreme, even for Luny Lucy."
"Heather!" London sounds tired.
"Sorry." Heather coughs. "I meant Lucid Lucy." Sara snickers and they air-high five. Kyle clears his throat, which means he wants to laugh but won't risk angering London. London raises an eyebrow at him, which is the final straw. They all crack up...except for London.

"Anyway...Kyle." He perks up, eyes sparkling. London continues, "I was wondering whether the Clave can send us a few more trainers. We're going to have our hands full, what with another teen in the house and you being on call."
"I don't know," Kyle replies sadly. "Unless these demon attacks start to dwindle...its a problem, but at least Heather has a trainer-"
Heather rolls her eyes. "Who is a pain in the-"

"Heather." Kyle is serious. "You need to realise something. You are exceptional, ok? I understand you have some incredible capabilities, which if honed and trained could turn you into a first-class Shadowhunter. Jason is your perfect match when it comes to fighting. You both have things to learn from one another, and him training you - and vice versa - is a huge advantage and you're lucky to have it. So start acting like it."

Heather is silent. Sara glances her way, but Heather ignores her, blood boiling. She knows why her abilities are the way they are - she earned them the hard way, through pain and heartbreak. Images flash in her mind of her mother...and then she shuts them out, getting to her feet.

"I'm going to train," she says to no one in particular, before leaving the room before they can see the haunted look in her eyes.

Sara watches Heather leaving the room, looking thoroughly pissed. She glances at Kyle. "So. When does the famous Lucy arrive?"
Kyle looks anywhere but at her. Finally he says "Er, tonight actually."

Sara jumps from her seat. "What?!"
"They wanted to come here straight away. She should be flying here right now. Oh and she's also bringing her cat!"
Sara raises an eyebrow. "She's bringing her cat here? Huh."

Sara decides to go after Heather. "Well, I'll leave you two lovebirds alone to do whatever you do. I'm going to go find Heather.

London flushes pink and Sara grins as she walks out the door.

Smack! The punching bag connects with Heather's fists, swinging madly. Smack, smack, SMACK . She twists, bringing her leg up and kicking the punching bag, before coming in with a double punch. Her hair has come out of its knot and strands obstruct her vision, her mouth set in a thin line of anger.

Smack . She imagines the faceless attacker.
Kick . She remembers the screaming.
Double punch . She ducks and thinks of the pain clawing its way up her back.
Smack, smack . She remembers the pounding of her heart and the pounding of the rain on the pavement as she ran.
SMACK ...her mother's eyes, pleading with her to leave...

"Don't kill the bag, Heath (pronounced like Heather but with out the 'er')." Heather whirls to see Jason leaning against the door, his expression innocent. "It can't defend itself, you know."

She ignores him and starts to pack up the equipment. She's in no mood for Jason's antics today.

"You know, you really have to control that anger of yours," he continues, still not giving up. She grits her teeth. "One day it may just get you into a situation you cannot get yourself out of-"

"Jason." Her tone was all warning. "Just shut up, ok?"
"Why?" he smirks. "Am I annoying yo-"

She turns around to face him, taking deep breath, trying not to let her emotions overcome her. His smirk freezes when he sees the raw agony on her face. "Just. Shut. Up. L-leave me alone!" She turns back to the bag, packing it away with shaking hands. Jason hesitates. For all his bravado, he feels disconcerted at Heather's vulnerability. The Heather he knows isn't vulnerable, or hurt. He considers staying, but knows he is the last person she needs to have here right now.

"Alright," he says. She doesn't respond. He takes one last look at her back, before leaving the way he'd come.

Sara's footsteps make muffled sounds as she walks the halls of the institute. She's still learning the map of the place and looks for things to help her remember. The blackened bit of the wall paper. The oddly shaped lamp. The stain in the carpet. She's so focused on remembering where the training room is that she doesn't see Jason coming around the corner.

"OOF!" Exclaims Sara bouncing off Jason. Jason reaches out and catches her arm and steadies her. She glances up at his piercing green eyes. They stare at each other a moment before Sara looks away. She looks pointedly at his hand gripping her forearm still. he glances down and releases her.

"Lose your footing there?" Jason smirks at her.
Sara glares back. "Why don't you watch where you're going?" She demands.
Jason chuckles. "I believe it was you that ran into me.
"Whatever. I'm going to find Heather." Sara strides past him, or tries to anyway. He catches her arm once again. Sara glares at him and says "Are you making this a habit?"
Jason ignores her. "I think Heather wants to be alone right now."
Sara rolls her eyes. "I realize that. But I need to warn her that Lucy Morgenstern will be here. Tonight."
Jason stares at her. "Lucy's coming here? No wonder Heather's so upset.." He trails off not looking at Sara.

"What's the deal with them anyway?" Asks Sara.
Jason's smirk returns. "Wouldn't you like to know." Then he walks off. Leaving Sara more confused then ever.

"Oh Sara!" She hears Jason call to her. She turns around. "Training rooms down the hall and to the left."
"I know!" She wants to wipe that smirk off of his perfect face. Woah, woah perfect? Where did that come from?
"Uh huh." He sneers, disappearing around the corner.

Sara bites her pride and follows his directions. Then she enters the training room.

Heather Lovelace

Heather hears Sara come in and turns around, forcing a smile on her face. But Sara isn't fooled.

"Wanna talk about it?" Sara asks, walking over. Heather shakes her head.
"It's just a few bad memories. And Jason," she adds, rolling her eyes. Sara laughs and Heather smiles gratefully at her.

"About Lucy..." Sara stalls and Heather knows what's coming. "She's arriving tonight."
"Great." Heather walks over to the practice mat and flops down on it, staring up at the ceiling. "Perfect. Wonderful. Fantastico. I am over the moon, as happy as Larry, as a pug in mud." Heather props herself up on her elbows and looks over at Sara. "She hates me."
Sara smirks. "Yeah, I noticed that last time you guys met up."
"It's not like I actually hurt her-"
"You knocked out her two front teeth."
Heather bites back a smile. "Three front teeth."

Sara comes over, joining Heather. Heather sighs. "I hate it here, Sara." Sara jerks, surprised.
"What?"
Heather thinks back to her childhood. "Things are so horrible here. The constant fighting, the warrior like training and the endless killing..." she trails off. "It's too much. I...I just want to have a normal life, but I know that's impossible. Especially...with my gifts and this." Heather turns over so Sara can see, as she moves sleeve of her top aside so Sara can see the horrible, gory scar that mars Heather's back.

Sara pales. "That...that..."
Heather straightens, the sleeve once again covering the mark. "Yep. I know."
"Does anyone else know?"
"London. Kyle. The Clave."
"Jason?"
Heather frowns. "If he knew I'd never hear the end of it."
Sara hesitates. "How did you get it, Heather?"

Heather freezes. Then she gets to her feet in one fluid motion, expertly fixing her hair into its habitual knot. "That," she replies, "is a tale for another time."

Heather Lovelace

On that high note, Heather showered and then - in her bathrobe - she stood before her wardrobe, contemplating her outfit choice. She decided on a long, midnight blue-almost-black skirt, long flowy-sleeved midnight blue top with a ebony corset over it and her favourite black stiletto boots.

Sara helped her fix her hair so half of it was pinned into a set of elegant coils at the back of her head and the rest flowed down her back in ice blonde waves.

Sara had gone off to get changed herself, so Heather took the chance to choose her weapons. Who knew what trouble they'd meet. Earring went in, lipstick was applied, seraph blades carefully strapped to the insides of her legs and under the sleeves of her shirt. She was in the process of putting on her keepsake - her mother's iron bracelet - when there was a knock on the door.

"Come in!" she said, fastening the bracelet. And to her surprise, Jason walked inside the room. "Yes?" she asked. He was standing in the doorway, his eyes fixed on her. He took his time, his eyes roaming over her, from her head to her toes and not for the first time, Heather wished she knew what was going on in that head of his.

She blushed. He grinned.

"Wow, Heath!" He gave her a slow wink. "You clean up nice...for a psycho chick."
"What do you want, Jason?" she asked, turning her back on him, trying to stop the flutter in her heart that his complement had caused.
"Kyle said to warn you and Sara to be careful." Jason's tone was serious and Heather turned to see his face devoid of any playfulness; a first for him. "Demon attacks aren't unusual occurrences so..." he trailed off, looking unsure of himself. "Be careful, ok?"

"Ok." She bit her lip, not knowing what to say. "Look, Jason, I'm sorry about-"
He crossed the space between them and laid a finger on her lips. "Shush, Heather. There's no need to apologise. I understand." His eyes were so deep, like whirlpools and Heather felt her hold over her emotions start to slip. She was hyper aware of his finger on her lips and she willed herself to remain calm.

"You're ruining my lipstick," she said, hating the way her voice caught. He chuckled and let his finger drop to his side.
"Ah, I wouldn't want to do that, now would I." She exhaled a sigh of relief as his teasing, Jason-like tone returned. They were back on safe grounds now. "Ok, Beauty. I'll leave you to your primping, or whatever it is you females do."

"Like you don't spend time infront of the mirror," she shot back. He looked thoughtful.
"Oh, I do. But just look at this!" He gestured to himself. "Who wouldn't want to gaze upon such..."
She shoved him out the door, trying not to grin as he laughed.
"Goodbye, Jason." She made to close the door, but he stuck out his foot, his face coming in close to hers. His gaze held her, before he cracked a grin.
"Mizpah, Heather." he said, smirking. She mock sighed and shut the door in his face, leaning against it in relief.

Cassie didn't stop when she heard Chris Greywaker calling her, she kept on hitting the punching bag. She was so mad. Mad at her Dad, her brother Carter, and Chris. How could they keep such a big thing from me, she thought. "And now they were sending me to some stupid Institute to fight off demons!", she muttered under her breath. Blood rushed to her face. She've never been so angry in her life!

Suddenly the bag stopped bouncing and Cassie saw Chris holding it in his muscular hands. "Get out of here!", she screamed and took off in the way of the terrace. Chris sprinted forward to hold her, and jerked her in front of him. She lowered her head, not wanting to look him in his eyes. Chris is Cassie's best friend, her partner in crime. But she never even imagined such a huge secret. The secret about her lineage, about the mysterious death of her mother. She didn't expect that from him. And that made her more angry.

"Would you listen to me for a minute?", shouted Chris. "Let me at least explain yo-", he was cut off by her. "Explain me what Chris? Explain me that I come from a dark lineage of demon hunters, that my Mom was killed by a demon, that I'm a freak who controls people with her mind!", Cassie screamed. "What possibly can you explain, Chris? And of all people, you knew everything and didn't tell a single thing? You always knew how hard it is for me accept that my Mom's not gonna come back! I was made to believe that she died of an accident. I was made to believe that Dad and Carter went out for their job, but they are killers. And I'm the biggest freak! I'm not normal!", she ran away , wiping the teardrops from her face.

Hours later, she went down and sat on the chair at the table. Carter, Chris and Mr. Clearwater looked from their food, and stared at her. "What? I'm angry, but that doesn't mean that I'm not gonna eat!", Cassie explained rudely, and everyone went back to their eating. Silence. Chris choked a laughter. Cassie looked up and glared up at him. Then everyone broke into laughter, except Cassie.

Cassie, her face serious, asked her father, "Which one of them killed Mom?". Mr. Clearwater looked up at her daughter and said, "He's still out there. Roaming freely. He's the strongest of them all. He-", Cassie cut him off. "If I go, can I hunt him down?". Everyone's face was troubled. "Yes, but-", Cassie shot up. "I'm gonna pack up. I'm going to the academy. I'm not gonna be calm, until I hunt that demon's ass down!". And she went up the stairs.

Lucy felt a tingle at the base of her spine. She pursed her lips and pulled her sensor out of her bag. She cursed, " damnit you would think even THEY could keep demons away," she snorted "probably too busy pretending to be mundies." Lucy muttered to herself before grabbing her backpack and rappig on the glass, "Hey let me out here, I'll find the Institute on my own, just make sure the rest of my stuff gets there."

The driver nodded and pulled over. Lucy pulled out a couple is seraph blades and strapped then to her thighs, put on a few iron bracelets, and finally armed herself with a few holy knives.

Lucy yanked the car door open and started running towards where the demonic levels were coming from. As he ran she realized it was coming from an abandoned building that had been turned into a club. The neon lights and pounding music were attracting mundies like moths to a flame, which in turn attracted all the little beasties that loved to snack on their life forces.

Her lip curled at the thought of going into the swarm of mundanes. But she knew it had to be done, she quickly drew a rune on her arm to hide her from the humans and she slipped pass the bouncer wig a group of dueling girls.

"Where are you?" she whispered to herself as she scanned the club. "gotcha." She tensed her arm as she slipped through the crowd on the dancefloor heading towards the Eidolon demon that was stalling a group of teenagers.

When she got close enough she threw one of her knives at it and summoned her seraph blades. Her knife had hit it in the throat and she sliced at its eyes before it knew what hit it. It lashed out blindly and it's claws scraped the wall. Lucy darted up to it and slashed the things throat opening the already bleeding wound even more.

Lucy grabbed her knife and wiped it off, she turned around sensing eyes on her. She smirked," well, well, well what do we have here? Having fun? Well I'm sorry to cut the night short but if you would be so kind could you direct me to the Institute, you see on my way there I got a little side tracked doing YOUR job." The shocked faces of Heather lovelace and Sara Lightwood stared blankly back at her.

Heather's eyes narrowed but she grudgingly nodded her head

Cassie was busy shoveling through her wardrobe and throwing her clothes in the suitcase. There was a knock on the door. "I don't want another lecture, Carter!", Cassie yelled. "Its not Carter, its me.", came Chris's calm voice from the other side of the door. "Not now Chris", she called back. The door opened slowly and Chris emerged. "I thought I said that I was busy", Cassie said. "Cass, don't make any decisions in haste. Yo-", he was cut off as she spoke, "What decisions are you talking about, Chris? I never made any decision. I didn't even get a chance to.", she exclaimed, but didn't shout. Chris held her arm and jerked her, so that they were facing each other. "Listen to me Cassie", began Chris. "I know I made a mistake, we all did. But if we told you earlier , then you would've never accepted your fate. You would've run away, and land yourself in an unknown danger, without being prepared. Your Mom would've wanted you to do the same, she would've wanted you to be just like her. Strong and powerful. And the best. Maybe, in a different way, but yes, the best".

There was a long silence. Then Cassie spoke, "Don't waste your time on giving me lectures Chris. I've accepted my fate. I'm going to this dumb academy. You guys win. But I didn't lose either. As soon as I'm out and trained, I'm gonna hunt that demon down. Once my job is done, I'll return to my old life. I won't stay there a minute after I'm done. I'm going only for Mom."

"Cassie! The car's ready!", shouted Carter. Cassie zipped the suitcase closed, swung the duffle bag across her shoulder and made her way towards the door. She stopped, and turned around to face Chris. "Don't worry, it was never your fault. I forgave you long time back," and she smiled. Chris pulled her and hugged her tight. "I'll miss you", he said softly. She punched him in his chest."Ow! What was that for?", exclaimed Chris. "You're saying as if I'm not gonna miss you, idiot!", she said and hugged him. He smiled and kissed her on her forehead. "Take care of yourself, and please, behave", he said. "I will", she said. "Promise?". "Promise". And she left.

She was shocked to see Carter sitting in the driver's seat. She put her luggage in the back of the car and slid beside Carter. "Please, don't tell me you're going to come with me.", she said with a big sigh. "Of course, I am. I need to protect you. Plus I'm missing my popularity a lot!", said Carter. "Yeah, right! So, can we start off Mr.Popular, because I don't have the whole day with me!", she screamed. Carter grinned, and revved up the car engine.

Heather Lovelace

Demon pox , swore Heather inwardly. She and Sara had been having a great time. The music had been great, hypnotic - she'd felt all her worries slip away into the night along with her dark memories. Until the Queen of Sheba turned up. Heather wanted to punch that smirk of Lucy's smug face.

"Wanna lose a few more teeth, Luce?" Heather taunted, watching with satisfaction as Lucy turned red. "I hear the Downworlders sell replacements. Well...that is," Heather added, grinning. "fang replacements. But then again you always were a blood-sucking leech, right Luce?"

"I just saved your miserable arse, Heather!" spat Lucy, pocketing her knife. "You could at least appear grateful!"
"I'll be grateful once you're half-way across the world again," replied Heather smoothly. Sara shot her a questioning look, but Heather shook her head subtly.

"Well...come on, Sara." Heather delicately flicked a glob of demon goo off a fingernail - the only evidence of demon remains on her, whereas Lucy was covered in the stuff - and turned to leave. Lucy stood there. Heather sighed, paused and shot her a glare.

"What?!" Lucy growled. Heather snorted.
"The Institute? You needed directions. We. Are. Going. There." She said this real slow to make sure Lucy got it through her head.
"Are you coming or not?" asked Sara, who was scanning the area for any demon trouble. "Unless you have other plans."

Sara looked at Lucy, and bit her lip as goo trickled from Lucy's hair onto her face. Lucy grimaced in disgust. "Alright. I'm coming."
"Glad we cleared that up," replied Heather sarcastically. And she turned on her heel and set off for the Institute.

The tension in the air was so thick Sara could barely breathe. Heather shot daggers at Lucy and Lucy glared right back. Lucy flipped her demon goo sodden hair away from her face. It didn't help. Lucy was covered from head to toe in slightly luminescent green demon goo. Sara couldn't help but snicker.

Lucy's glare moved to Sara. "Something funny?"
Sara grinned. "You just look a bit green, you feeling alright?"
Lucy's face went from green to red in an instant. She wiped some of the goo of her face and threw it at Sara. Sara ducked, and it Heather right in the face.

They stopped dead in their tracks. Heather stalked over to Lucy looking like she wanted to hit her. She probably would too.

"Uh oh," Sara murmured, taking a step away from the girls that looked like they wanted to ripe each other's throats out. Ironically, they had both been taught exactly how to do just that.

They had just happened to stop right outside the Institute when Heather got a face-full of demon goo. Right. In. The. Face. Smack-bang, a shot in a million, dead centre. Heather stalked over to Lucy and in a second had her seraph blade at Lucy's throat.

"Uh oh," Heather heard Sara mutter. But Heather couldn't make out anything else, over the blood pounding in her ears. Not again. Lucy was not getting away with anything, ever again.

"You. Never. Learn," Heather said through gritted teeth, nose-to-nose with Lucy. "Stay away from me." Heather couldn't help but choke slightly on the words. "Before I avenge Liam once and for all."
Lucy's eyes widened slightly. "You're still-?" She broke off when in a whirl of movement, Heather had flipped her onto the pavement and had her held down by a stilettoed boot.

"Stay away from me." Heather's voice was deathly quiet. Sara walked forward and laid a hand on Heather's arm. Heather realised tears ran down her own cheeks and she swiped them away hurriedly but they continued to fall. She let Lucy up, lifting her foot and turned away, walking haughtily up the Institute steps.

She had barely reached the door when it opened, revealing a grinning Jason. "I thought I heard-" He broke off abruptly. His arm shot out, grabbing ahold of Heather's arm. "Heather. What's wrong?" His voice was low, urgent. "Are you ok?"

She nodded, not trusting herself to speak. He glanced behind her and raised his eyebrows. "Lucy Morgenstern? Going for a new look, are we? 'Covered-in-gloop' is real hot I've heard." Lucy shrugged. Sara rolled her eyes at Jason, as if saying "See what I have to deal with?"

"Well." Jason tugged Heather inside. "I'm going to get this young lady a bandage and you two can settle in."
"Bandage?" Heather asked, confusion breaking through her haze.
"Yep." He touched her temple and his fingers came away red.

Sara was still processing what she had just seen. When Heather had flipped Lucy she had been a blur. Sara still couldn't believe she had moved that fast. And who was this Liam that Heather wanted to avenge? Sara had a million questions as she followed Heather into the institute, but she clamped her mouth shut.

Heather walked so fast down the halls that Sara's short legs had to jog just to keep up. As they reached her room Heather threw open the door with a loud bang! Sara silently followed her and closed the door quietly

Sara turned around and saw Heather trying to yank out the pins in her hair. "Hey," Sara said softly.

Heather didn't look up but she dropped her hands from her tangled hair. Sara efficiently took the pins out of Heather's hair and began brushing the tangles out of her hair. She had a flash of another pale blonde haired figure sitting in front of her as she brushed their hair. Sara's breathe caught. No. She wouldn't think of her. That was a different life.

Heather glanced up at Sara's intake of breathe. Sara tried to smile reassuringly at her. "Heath.."
"I don't want to talk about it." She said harshly. Heather's face was an emotionless mask, but her eyes betrayed her. Sara saw deep hurt there.

Sara took a step back and looked at the floor. Quietly she said "I'll just leave you then." And began walking to the door.

She heard a strangled sound come from behind her. She looked back and there was Heather with tears running down her face. Sara ran back to her friend and enveloped her in a hug.
"Sorry," chocked Heather.
"Shh. It's okay."

Sara looked at Heather's eyes and saw raw pain in there. She wanted to ask what this Lucy girl did to hurt her so bad. But Sara realized it didn't matter. Lucy hurt Heather in some way, and that was enough for Sara.

Melissa | 869 comments Lucy Morgenstern

Lucy clenched her whole body, feeling hot and cold and........ hurt. She felt like crying, she knew moving to a new Institute would be hard but she hadn't counted on everyone ganging up on her.

She was covered in demon goo, she didn't know where any of her stuff was, and she had just saved a building full of mundanes and all she had gotten in return was slammed on the concrete and treated like dirt. Her only consolation was that she had sliced Heather's pretty little face.

She stalked past Jason who was leering at her, she sneered back at Jason, Heather, and Sara who were blocking the doorway and giving her the stink eye, "well since you seem so
Keen on bringing up the past do I need to break your arm again Heather? You always seem to conveniently forget that." Heather just glared harder but Lucy noticed that she did move one hand to cover a scar on her arm.

Lucy rolled her eyes, "whatever, just let me by and I swear the four of us will have as little contact as possible." They moved to let her pass and she stalked by them. "Arses" she muttered. She blinked when she heard a loud 'meow' Church turned around and slowly made his way farther into the Institute. She shrugged and followed him, having nowhere else to go.

First he led her to a small bare bedroom, on the small bed were her megear possessions after she grabbed some toiletries Church led her to a bathroom and she got in the shower.

She came out half an hour later smelling like strawberries and goop free. She found Church sitting outside the bathroom, Lucy smiled at him before going back to her room still wrapped in a towel. Church followed her and jumped up on her bed "well you're much more pleasant here than you were back home."

Lucy plopped down next to Church and looked at the runes that traced up and down her limbs. She fingered the large scar on her back and shuddered, remembering the night she got it, remembering the last night she had seen Liam before she knew it everything was blurry with tears. She remembered how he died, how he jumped in front of her so she wouldn't get hit by the demon tail that had hurtled straight at her. She shook her head as if to shake off the memories

She shook her head and put on her pajamas. She shoved her bag of the bed and climbed into bed. Church hopped up and snuggled up to her. "You've changed a lot....." she trailed off as she fell asleep. She dreamt of Liam, his face bloated by the poison and Heather stalking after her as she tried to get to Liam, Heather's arm bent at an odd angle. There was a loud pounding noise and she woke with a start, she realized someone was screaming, realized she was screaming.

She clutched a hand to her chest and croaked, "who is it?". Heather' voice answered her sounding cross and condescending, "what's wrong Luney, I mean Lucy your making such a racket we thought you were trying to sing again." Lucy was tired of Heather's bitchy attitude so she grabbed one of her knives and threw it at the door where she imagined Heather's face was.

There was a thump as if Heather had fallen, then a snotty sounding "whatever" and footsteps down the hallway. Lucy hugged herself before getting up and putting on her hoodie, "No way I'm going back to sleep now, may as well explore. You coming Church?" the cat opening one eye to look at her then he closed it and turned away from her. "I'll take that as a no," she shrugged and made sure she had her knives and blades before peeking out into the hall, "well here I go."

Heather Lovelace (at the moment I'm Jason)

Jason stared at his hands, hardly concentrating on their scarred surface, but just thinking. Thinking of the sinkhole that his life had turned into...all of their lives.

When Jason was younger, his father used to tell him tales of how things had been for Shadowhunters before...before an evil Shadowhunter by the name of Jonathan Morgenstern, or as he was more commonly referred to as, Sebastian, changed everything.

Sebastian had been defeated, but at a cost. Somehow he - using his arts - had fractured the fragile balance between the world of demons and the world of men before his defeat. As if lifting an unseen curtain, he had allowed them to freely enter the mortal world. The demons no longer had to be called upon using Downworlder arts and pentagrams - now, they were hiding in the streets, lurking at grocery stores. No one was safe.

Shadowhunters never had a moments rest. Their job was to deal with demonkind and to keep the mortal world safe. But they had their work cut out for them, since the 'curtain' that separated the two had been ruined. No one knew how to fix it. What Sebastian had done was unheard of. Demons outnumbered Shadowhunters - even with the Downworlders' help (and the Fae's) they were slowly losing the battle.

How much longer can we go on like this? wondered Jason. The days were darker, the nights longer, the number of deaths too long to count. Jason had long stopped listening to the radio or watching the TV - both echoed the horror the mortal world had been plunged into.

Jason sighed, running a hand through his head. Even the Institute was a mess. Not that his sister, London (yes, she was his half-sister technically, but still) and her fiance Kyle weren't doing a good job. But it was hard on them. And now with Lucy and Heather's constant war...

Jason fought back the emotions that came when he thought of how he'd felt, what he'd thought, when he'd seen Heather's tortured face on the Institute steps. What would he do if one day something were to force him to have to choose between finishing his duty and her? He smiled bleakly, thinking of how brilliant a fighter she was. One day she would beat him.

Then he grinned, his old self returning. That day wouldn't be anytime soon, if he could help it. After all, he reasoned. He had a reputation to protect!

Cassie climbed out and slammed the door of the car. She kicked the the back right wheel with her feet, while Carter was busy retrieving the jack and the extra wheel he always kept, from behind the car. "Kicking it won't help, Cass", he said as he rolled the wheel to the damaged one. "Stupid car with its stupid owner!", she muttered under her breath. "I heard that", warned Carter. "Whatever", she said and reached into the car to pull out her black leather jacket. "Where're you going?", asked Carter. "To a casino party in Las Vegas! Wanna join?", she said with a fake "Wow" expression. "What do you think, dumbo?", she said as she took off in the other way. "Wait!", he called. "Dad told me not to let you go out of my sight", he said. "Great! Now Dad's gonna decide where I can go or not!", she yelled at him. Carter gave the "big brother" look. "I won't be far", she said and took off, not looking in his direction.

The cold, icy breeze stung her face. She hugged herself tight to avoid the numbness. She was going through all the things that happened in the last 48 hours. It was hard to believe them, but it was even harder to accept them. Suddenly, out of the corner of the eye, she noticed a figure move. She quickly looked all around her, but there was no one. After walking a few more steps, she heard footsteps behind her, but there was no one. She knew she was being followed.
"Carter?", she called out. "Its not funny, okay? Stop playing hide and seek with me", she said and started walking. The wind blew cold, numbing her hands. She turned back, to walk back to the car, trying to get out of the cold. When she reached the car, she saw Carter keeping the deflated tire and the jack back in the trunk.
"Why were you following me, Carter?", she said in a disgusted voice. "What?", Carter replied back. "Why would I follow you? I've got much important work to do, other than that!", he said. Cassie couldn't believe that he was lying. She thought again. She was ready to swear that someone was following her.
"Come on, get in", Carter said, interrupting her thoughts. She nodded and got in, and the car took off in the way to Wayland Institute.

That night, Heather couldn't sleep. Not that she didn't try - she was exhausted from the day's events and sleep would have been a welcome way to escape - but her memories haunted her relentlessly. She rolled onto her side, staring at the wall opposite her bed and at the translucent curtains through which pale strips of moonlight shone, bathing the room in an eerie glow. Life had been so much simpler before...

She shook her head, halting her trip down memory lane. Memories were pointless. Nothing could change the present.

Lucy was in the training room sitting against the wall with her arms wrapped around her legs and her chin resting on top of her knees. She shuddered remembering the night Liam Lovelace died......

It was unusual for a boy and girl to become parabatai, but when Liam had asked her Lucy didn't refuse. She knew he was one of the best and he was her best friend so even if it was rare, it felt only natural.

For awhile they were inseparable, they spent three years training together. Lucy knew Liam had a sister her age but she hadn't met her,and she knew Liam didn't want his sister to be a shadowhunter so Lucy didn't ask him about her.

They were fantastic partners, moving in sync as they fought, never leaving the other open to danger. Until they went up against a greater demon.

Lucy shuddered as she remembered, the poison-tipped tail coming at her from behind, Liam jumping in front of her. Everything else from that night was a blur..... until Liam spluttered and gasped his last breath, Lucy would never forget his expression or his last words.........

Lucy's vision got blurry and she realized she was crying. She whimpered, "Liam", her lip trembled and she started sobbing. A noise coming from the hallway startled her out of her pity induced sobs, "who's there? Come to make fun of me while I'm down?" she hated that her voice cracked but couldn't help it.

A figure appeared in the doorway and started towards her.

Heather Lovelace

Heather sat up in her bed, the covers pooling around her waist. Something was not right. Yes, that sounded very Miss Clavel from Madeline, but it was the truth nevertheless. She grabbed the seraph blade on her nightstand, taking an extra one out of her drawer in case, and slipped out of her bedroom.

The halls were silent. Deadly silent. Heather's breathing sounded loudly in her ears. Has she been imagining it? That feeling of unease hadn't left her so she continued to walk cautiously down the twisting corridors.

No - she hadn't imagined it. She felt it now. Her pace quickened, her instincts leading her towards the training room. She heard scuffling, a muffled yelp and a thud of something hitting wood.

She burst through the training room doors to find Lucy Morgenstern and an unknown man, the man's hand around Lucy's throat, pinning her to the wall. Without thought, Heather threw one of her blades so it hit him in his shoulder blade. He roared, throwing Lucy - who looked the worse for wear - across the room, where she crumpled like a rag doll. Heather winced but didn't move to help, as the man turned on Heather instead.

Heather, not pausing, whirled into motion. She raced to the rack against the wall and found the electric whip, snapping it when the man came within a foot of her - welts rising on his arms. He hissed...well, IT hissed. On first glance male, it seemed inhuman the more Heather looked.

It slapped her across the face and she gasped as long nails scratched her cheek. Blood oozed down her face but she had the advantage...having taken the chance to wrap the whip around his midsection when he'd slapped her, letting down his guard. She pressed the button on the side of the baton and the electric current flowed through the whip.

In seconds he was out, thudding to the floor. Heather didn't bother looking at him, it, any longer. She raced to Lucy's side, her mind replaying a similar scene...Liam...closed eyes...not breathing. Heather took a deep breath, drawing an iratze on Lucy's forehead and one on her neck to heal the jagged scratches. Thankfully Lucy had begun to stir.

"Lucy?" Heather hated how feeble her voice sounded. She cleared her throat. "Lucy are you ok?"
Lucy blinked, her gaze hazy. "I...I...Jacob!" She tried to stand up, but Heather forced her to sit as standing was too big a feat to achieve in Lucy's present state. "Jacob was here!"
"Is that thing Jacob?" asked Heather, pointing to the still figure, tied up in the whip and lying on the floor. "Because, if so, he's taking an extended nap at the moment."

Lucy exhaled, closing her eyes. "He followed me."
Something clicked. "Please tell me this isn't that obsessive guy you came here to get away from," Heather begged. "Because that would be so Twilight-ish."
Lucy glared. "Do I look like I'm in the depths of true love here?"
"No, but neither do you look like you're doing a good job staying conscious," Heather retorted. "And for the record," she added, grinning, "I just saved your life."
"Oh joy," replied Lucy, though she smiled a little.

She was running very fast, panting, but she didn't know what she was escaping from. She ran out into the woods, and hid behind a bush. Her senses were alert and steady, but her mind was running in different directions. Then she saw something. In the dark, there was a figure, strolling towards her. But he wasn't alone, there was someone with him, or it. She didn't know. And then she saw her mother, coming out from behind him, her eyes red, her face displaying a devilish grin. She pointed her finger towards her, and then she heard a voice, a voice she knew very well, a voice that belongs to...to Carter.

"Wake up, sleepy head!", Carter nudged her. Cassie woke up, her hair tussled. She blinked, trying to remember where she was. "Where's Mom?", she asked, totally clueless, looking all around her. Carter said, "Cass, what's wrong with you? It seems like you saw a demon or something!". Cassie shook her head, gaining her senses back to reality, "Nothing".

A few minutes later, the car came to a halt. Cassie looked up from her cell phone, and asked, "Why are we stopping?". "Because we're here", replied Carter. Cassie was stunned to see the enormous infrastructure ahead of her. She got out of the car and thought that she has gone back in the 1800s, standing before a castle. The blurry, light shade of the blue sky of the dawn appeared as a brilliant contrast to the scene ahead of her. She got her bags and suitcase from the car's trunk and followed Carter.

There was a strange man standing near the huge gate. His awkward fashion made her remind of the watchmen in the old days. He led them to a small office like building. "Carter Clearwater", said Carter. He looked through something like files, and led them in.

Heather Lovelace

The next morning was Hell.

Heather hadn't gotten any sleep the night before, after the incident, and it showed. She had circles under her eyes which no amount of concealer could fully conceal. She yawned widely was she dressed - black tank top, jean skirt, tights and her comfy black boots.

Heather loved boots; actually, she loved shoes in general. She was just pulling her hair back into a ponytail when Sara entered the room, her face murderous. Heather winced.

"HEATHER..." Sara's tone was icy.
"Sorry Sara - I didn't have time to wake up anyone else!"
Sara blew out a breath. "You could have been hurt."
"Me?" Heather raised an eyebrow. Sara sighed.

"You didn't even report it to London immediately. She is pissed, my friend." Sara took a seat on the edge of Heather's bed. Heather was looking into her vanity mirror, pinning the sides of her hair.
"I couldn't. Everyone was asleep - and 'Sleep is important'!" Heather quoted London's mantra and Sara cracked a grin.

"Kyle has taken Lucy to the Clave for the rest of the day," Sara reported, "London is leaving in five minutes to confer with the Downworlder representative on some high and mighty issue and you..." Sara smirked. "London has COMMANDED that you have an extra-lengthy training session with Jason to make up for your, ummm...slip in Shadowhunter etiquette."

"She WHAT?!" Heather was beside herself. "No. No no no no no."
"Ah, yes, yes yes yes yes." Sara grinned. "Now you get to train with Mr Smexy for the rest of the day. Maybe you'll even see him shirtle-"

Heather threw a hairbrush at Sara, causing Sara to cackle loudly and lie back on the bed, rolling around as she laughed and laughed.

Heather's cheeks were red. "You are such a-"
"So you're not picturing Jason shirtless...?" Sara didn't need an answer. Heather's blushing face was enough. "Thought so!"
"Only because you mentioned it!" protested Heather. Sara shook her head, still giggling.
"Sure. Sure."

"I am not crushing over an arse like him." Heather felt helpless; she couldn't explain the wall she involuntarily put up with members of the opposite sex. She couldn't let herself get attached to anyone. Look what happened to Lucy. Liam...Liam had rejected her advances and then Lucy had lost it. Heather knew in reality, she was only afraid of Jason's rejection, but it felt better to convince herself otherwise. "Who would?"

"Any girl whom God has given eyes to see with, Heath," replied Sara sarcastically. Heather rolled her eyes and made for the door. "Have fun!" yelled Sara after her, earning a mock glare before Heather closed the door.

"You gotta be kidding me!", said Cassie, surprised as she stood beside her brother at the long hallway. "About what?", Carter replied, pretending to be honest. "What did you think it would be, huh? Gargoyles and demon lurking?", and he laughed out. Cassie glared at him. She picked up her bags, and started down the hallway, Carter a foot ahead of her.

Carter suddenly raised a hand, and waved. "Hey Jase!", he yelled. The guy looked at him and cracked a grin, by which Cassie thought, that the smile was dazzling enough to win any girl's heart. "Hey Cart!", he called back. The guys shared a "guy" hug, that's what Cassie named it. Their close proximity, made her doubt about them, and she stepped a foot back. Carter stared at her in disbelief, knowing exactly why she did that, and Cassie choked on a laughter. The guy looked in her direction, and grinned. Cassie rolled her eyes.

"Jason, meet my little sister, Cassie", said Carter, "and Cassie, this is Jason". Cassie waved her hand, and looked at her brother. "Yeah, whatever. Listen, am I going to stand here all day long, or am I supposed to go to my room, if they have any?", she said, with a plain disgust in her voice. "Here's your room", said Carter and handed her a piece of paper. "Let me show you to yo-", Jason began to offer, but Cassie's hand in front of his face, cut him off. "Maybe, you don't see it, but I have legs. I'll find it. Thanks", she said and walked away. "That's the first chick who talked to me like that, Dude", he turned to Carter. "That was just a trailer, wait for the movie to begin", commented Carter, and picked up his bags, and started for his room, Jason at his heels.

Lucy was currently sitting in the back of a taxi with Kyle, feeling like a train full of cement had run her over.... repeatedly. Even with the iratzes all over her body she still felt horrible. She remembered last night in flashes, her crying in the training room, Jake grabbing her by the throat and throwing her across the room, her crashing into a rack of throwing knives, her freezing up thinking for a moment that it was Liam, Jake grabbing her and flinging her like a doll across the room again. After that it was hazy, but she remembered Heather helping her to the infirmary before she passed out again.

Lucy hated that Heather had been the one to save her, but at least someone had come to help. She shuddered to think what Jake might have done if nobody had.

Lucy vaguely remembered that Jake hadn't seemed himself, he was more of a demon than his usual arrogant self.Lucy looked up and caught Kyle staring at her, she managed a weak unconvincing smile. Kyle knew she was worried about going to the Silent City to be basically interrogated by the Silent Brothers.

Lucy didn't know why she was going to the Silent City, but she wasn't thinking very clearly at the moment.

Heather Lovelace

When Heather entered the training room Jason was waiting for her. Well not actually waiting, but he was engaged in some kind of intense battle with a guy she didn't recognise. She had slipped her hand to her side where her seraph blade rested, but she soon realised it was only friendly competition. The other guy - who was lean and with a shock of dark hair - was grinning from ear to ear.

"Come on, Jase!" he teased, ducking under Jason's swing and aiming a low kick which Jason easily avoided. "You've got better moves than that, I hope."
Jason only smiled, using his leg to trip the other guy - but he only rolled easily to his feet and attacked Jason once more. Heather sighed loudly, causing both guys to pause and look up from their testosterone battle.

"I was under the impression I was meant to be here," Heather said inspecting her nails, "but obviously I was wrong. I'll just leave you two to your grunting and male show of supremacy, shall I?" Jason snorted and crossed his impressive arms over his chest.

"Nice try," he said dryly. When the other guy cleared his throat, Jason started, before rolling his eyes. "Ok, ok. Heather," he said, his voice half mocking, half formal, "This is Carter Clearwater. Carter, this is the vicious Heather Lovelace." Heather glared at him. "Carter and his sister Cassie will be staying with us for a short period of time."

Heather felt herself deflate slightly. Great. More guests. Carter just laughed and stepped forward, his hand outstretched.

"A pleasure to meet you, Heather," he said, winking. "Sorry you had to witness me beating the hell out of Jase here."
Heather grinned, finding herself liking the new guy immensely. She shook his outstretched hand and was surprised when he turned it over in his and raised it to his lips, kissing her palm. It didn't escape her that Jason's expression had suddenly turned icy, but she ignored him and smiled at Carter.

"The pleasure's mine," she replied, before twisting her arm so that Carter, surprised, fell onto the practise mat. To her surprise, he just laughed, lashing out his leg as if to connect with her thigh bone. She twisted aiming for his back, but he was back on his feet.

"Street fighting?" he asked, between swings. She nodded vaguely, aiming a low punch at his gut which only graze his shirt before he blocked her and tried to swipe at her legs. "Were you trained in it or...?"
"Personal experiences," she replied quietly. Jason's eyes were boring into her back, but she ignored both of the boys and concentrated on her breathing and watching Carter's body for signs of movement. She was not about to go into her life story with these two. Not the stories of the nights she spent having to fight dirty to save her life, punching out attackers, hiding in alleyways with a bloody mouth, black eyes and broken limbs. Those days were behind her.

Carter was an excellent opponent, though he wasn't Jason. They moved onto fighting with blades and she disarmed him within a matter of minutes and had him pinned to the ground, a knife at his throat. He was out of breath, whilst she had hardly broken a sweat.

"Concede?" she asked, smirking. Carter only shrugged easily and smiled up at her, his eyes twinkling.
"For you, Beautiful? I'll do anything you want me to do." Jason made a gagging noise and Heather shook her head in exasperation, offering Carter a hand and helping him to his feet.

"Now you've finished making a fool of yourself, Carter, " Jason drawled, rolling his shoulders and stepping forwards. "You can sit on the sidelines and watch how its meant to be done." Carter punched Jason in the arm but, still grinning shamelessly, took a seat against the wall. Jason closed the space between Heather and him, his eyes gleaming with a deadly light.

"So," he said quietly in a conversational tone."I hear we have the entire day to train together."
Heather exhaled, running a hand through her hair. "London's orders."
He shot her a look. "I figured. If it had been a suggestion, Heath, you wouldn't be here. You only do something if you're ordered to."

Heather looked away from him, instead focusing on checking her blade for scratches. "Don't try and act like you know how I work, Jason Penhallow," she managed to choke out. "Don't try and push me into one of your little boxes. I'm not ever going to let you dissect me."
"Fair enough," he replied, pulling on the edge of his combat gloves. His eyes never left her face. "But just so you know, it was a compliment. I'm not going to condemn you for the way you live your life."
"Good," she said. He was making her uncomfortable. He stepped closer and added, "What you did last night - it was brave." She felt her eyes start to prickle at his words, words no one had ever said to her for as long as she could remember.

"Stupid," he continued, his teasing tone returning and her cloud of emotion lifting. "But brave." She punched him in the stomach and he laughed through his pained expression. Then the practise session began.

Heather Lovelace

To Heather's surprise, after their lengthy practise - halfway through which Carter had declared himself 'knackered' and had left to get some well earned rest - Jason informed (commanded) her that they would be going out to eat lunch.

"What?" Heather had asked, puzzled. Jason had flicked her with the towel he'd slung around his neck in response.
"We're. Going. To. Lunch," he'd enunciated. "There's no way I'm eating whatever leftovers Sara's blown up. And I do mean blown up ," he'd added wryly.
"Well...ok." Heather had felt as if she was recovering from a slight shock. This wasn't the Jason she knew. "I'll just quickly shower and change into something nicer."
"Sure thing," he'd replied.

Heather raced to her room, showered, changed into a jersey knit v-neck empire top, with a single cap sleeve and chain link shoulder strap. She paired it off with jeans and slip on sandals, her hair pulled back in a lazy knot. Whilst dressing she questioned why she was going to so much effort for a simple lunch...with Jason of all people. It wasn't like she cared what he thought of her, right? What had happened to her "do not get attached" mantra?

It had flown right out the window with all her common sense, that's what had happened. Heather sighed, wishing she had declined his invitation but - facing the inevitable - left her room and made her way to the entrance hall.

Jason was waiting for her and she fought to maintain her cool demeanour. It was unfair - no one had the right to look that good. His shirt clung to his natural sleek frame, his leather jacket adding an edge to his bad-boy smile and the glint in his eyes.

Only women were meant to be gifted with the ability to use their eyes to communicate what they were thinking, and yet Jason's eyes spoke loud and clear. Maybe a little too clear, Heather thought.

"Ready?" he asked, his mouth curling. He always seemed to do that - that smirk that set Heather on edge, made her unsure of who she was and what she was doing. Pull it together! she scolded herself. She nodded briefly, avoiding eye contact. She noticed his smirk only grew broader and she groaned inwardly. This was going to be a long day.

Exiting the Institute, into the sunshine, Heather felt like a prisoner out of a jail. Freedom! She found herself smiling at the normality around her and Jason, the passers by, the cars, the bustle of everyday life. It felt mundane. It felt good .

"Livianos?" Heather asked, quirking an eyebrow.
"Yep," replied Jason, resting a hand beneath her elbow as he let her go first through the double doors of the restaurant. "Best Italian food around."
"And you know this how?"
Jason winked at her. "A man never gives away his secrets, milady." She shook her head, amused.

Well Jason was right - the Italian food was certainly the best she had ever tasted (no offence to Sara!). Jason asked whether she minded him ordering for both of them and she had shrugged, fine with the idea. The place was crowded and smelt divine. Heather experienced a whole new kind of torture waiting for the food to arrive but when it did, it was certainly worth it.

"Beautiful flavours," she commented, whilst trying something Jason had called 'gnocchi'. Jason smiled across the table at her.
"I told you it was good," he replied, taking a bite of his own.
"I will never doubt you word again. On food matters," she hurriedly added as she saw him open his mouth to speak. He mock sighed and she grinned.

When the waiter came around and Jason asked for the bill, his hand shot out and covered her own when the waiter left the table. Heather started.
"I'm paying." His voice left no room for negotiation. She flushed.
"But Jason-"
"See it as my way of thanking you for letting me beat you up everyday," he quipped, with a smile. She rolled her eyes but she noticed he never let go of her hand.

His hand on top of hers was warm and the weight of it felt reassuring. Almost absentmindedly, he ran his fingers over her knuckles and she sucked in a breath. "Heather," he said softly, his eyes looking up to meet hers. She swallowed repeatedly, her throat, her lungs, refusing to work. Suddenly the waiter appeared and handed Jason the bill, forcing Jason to reluctantly let go of her hand.

This is dangerous , thought Heather, her hand feeling cold. I can't fall for him - I just can't . But no matter how many times she said it to herself, when Jason turned to her and offered his hand with a smile and a "Let's go!" she couldn't have convinced herself if she'd tried.

She bustled through the corridors, searching for her room. "Where in the hell is this room?!", she muttered to herself. She looked at the paper again to check whether she was in the right track. And, she was. She was about to take a turn, when someone bumped into her. She fell to the ground, her suitcase falling, making a loud thud.

"Hey! Watch where you're going!", she scowled at the girl. The girl seemed to be terrified by the fierce glow in Cassie's green eyes. The girl stepped back, attempting to say a "sorry". Cassie sighed, and shook her head. She got up, dusted herself and went up to the girl. "Look, I'm sorry, okay? I'm really kinda pissed off for the last 48 hours. So, I really didn't mean to be rude", Cassie said, keeping her voice soft. The girl relaxed a bit, and said, "Its okay".

"Um, Hi! I'm Cassie. I'm new and kinda lost looking for my room. Can you show me where it is?", she said. The girl gave a smile of relief, and said, "Sure. I'm Sara, by the way". "Nice to meet you", Cassie further added, while gathering her bags and the suitcase. She picked up the paper and handed it to Sara. Sara looked at it, and said, "Its this way". Cassie smiled a "thank you".
