These short stories are quite fun - especially with Valek as a POV character! I wish that that happened more in the full-length novels. Either way, Ice Study is a definitely 3.5 out of 5.
Ice Study was definitely my favourite of all 3 short stories written for the Study series. The reason I enjoyed this short story so much is that it is written from the POV of Valek and Yelena as they work together to stop yet another attempt of evil taking over. Although I find Yelena quite annoying at times by getting into difficult situations that I sometimes find unnecessary, Valek is one of my favourite characters in the series and I really enjoyed reading from this point of view.

*Note: this is a novella written for the fans of the Study and Glass series, not a full length book*
Ice Study is a great short story. I loved the study series and Ice Study brought me right back into it. I wish Maria would write more books in this world! I loved that half of the story was from Valek's perspective. Though it was a quick read, Ice Study was still packed with action and humour. I would suggest reading it when your are done with the two series as it might spoil some plot points for...more

The third of the Study short stories and also the best, not only because it revolves around Yelena and Valek but also because it's the most developed of the three.
There are a few moments when the villain is explaining his agenda that made my eyebrows shoot skywards in a "whut?!?" movement but I guess with his somewhat delusional world view that was intended.
Janco's brief appearance made for a nice little comic relief in the middle of the action.

These short stories Maria V. Snyder wrote to mesh with the Study series were a lot of fun. In this last one we get to see Yelena and Valek in their most current state - working together. Both are strong characters and they work so well together, yet so often they are torn apart. They are again trying to keep magic in the hands of the good, and the stakes are at an all time high. I thought it was great that such an important event could be covered in a short story and enjoyed reading it. If the o...more

This is basically a short story that follows Yelena and Valek who are supposed to be on vacation after the previous events of Fire Study. It is told in both POV's. The story follows the exploits of one Owen Moon who wants to steal the Ice Moon from the Commander. He ends up capturing Yelena by kidnapping her brother Leif. My one complaint about this story is Yelena. She is always getting into situations where she is either tricked or beaten. Of course, tha...more

Probably my favorite of the three short stories and I liked how this one switched between Yelena and Valek. I really want a Valek point-of-view book one of these days and I'm hoping we'll see some of it in one (or all three!) of the next Study books. I liked the story, pacing, and set-up. The conclusion was good too. Nothing felt too rushed or that you missed out on something, but I definitely need more Yelena and Valek. The Study series is by far my favorite of hers and reading this story is ma...more
Ice Study is basically based after Valek and Yelena. This is a short story but gives a little closer to what has happened to this two after they have conquered the evil, mostly anyway. Valek and Yelena finally are able to establish a relationship without too much sneaking around. Yes there are still some sneaking around but in these sort story it's mostly from the bad guys. Nicely done.
I would personally suggest Ice Study only to those readers who have read both Magic Study and Fire Study. After...more

Sorprendente verdad??

This one felt a lot longer than the other two novellas. Still loved it, though it wasn't as quick a read as I'd been expecting! But it was a wonderful adventure, and the only of the three to really involve Yelena, making it read more like a shorter version of one of the actual Study books. The quest in this case is for Yelena to help rogue magician Owen Moon gain possession of the Ice Moon, which he claims the Commander stole. (view spoiler)...more
Just received the book I printed with this and the other short stories about Ixia/Sitia! Cover: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25...
I loved it! I missed Yelena and Valek. The chemistry they have!
And I'm so happy Janco made a small appearance! Of-course his one and only line is the best and funniest line in the whole story!

In the regular novels with Yelena as the main character and in her view, Valek is portrayed so mysterious, skilled, and invincible. and it's so nice to finally see how things really are in his view. I get a little giddy reading the chemistry between him and Yelena.
This and "The Power Study" are my two favorite shorts.
(Neither one is better than the other, they're both great in its own way.)

“Suppressing his relief, Valek asked, “Can you please tell this Lieutenant who he has arrested?”
“Can do,” Janco said with a smile. “Lieutenant Darren, let me be the first to congratulate you on capturing the elusive and legendary Kelav. He’s been wanted in Ixia for years on multiple counts of espionage.”

“Valek coalesced from the shadows and wrapped me in his long lean arms. I soaked in his musky smell, listening to his heart beat. Strong and steady. No indication that he had been sneaking around.”
