A secret Lycan world, hidden in plain sight. An outsider suddenly drawn in...She can't resist him, but he knows he can never have her...
Private investigator Alynna Chase is drawn in to the world of werewolf shifter clans when she encounters charming and sexy Lycan, Alex Westbrooke.
For centuries, werewolf shifters have moved among human society undetected, hiding in plain sight. The New York clan, hiding behind the powerful Fenrir Corporation, has ruled the East Coast for over two centuries, holding great power and position in both human and Lycan hierarchy.
Alynna suddenly finds herself in the center of this secretive society world when her true heritage is revealed – a full-blooded Lycan, born of the fabled True Mate pairing between her human mother and powerful Alpha father. Drawn deeper into their world, she feels a magnetic pull towards Alex.
As Alynna takes her place in Lycan high society, Alex knows he could never have her. He's a newcomer to New York and a member of the current Alpha’s security team, making her beyond his reach. But the attraction between them is too powerful, and he risks everything to have her.
However, a threat to the clan and Alynna’s life draws them closer together, and Alex will do anything to protect her, even risk getting too close and defying Lycan hierarchy.
With so many things at stake, will their affair end in disaster or have these two lonely souls found what they’ve been looking for?
The plot revolves around Alynna Chase, a 22 year old PI. I know what you're thinking because I had that thought. "Not another PNR Private Investigator book.. " It's a well used trope that the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Romance genre just can't seem to get away from. When I started the book I thought that I'd be reading the same, same old and I'd have to be negative in my review.. But then, then it got interesting and got me actually wanting to read the next page and the next before I even knew it.
Alicia Montgomery took an oft used plot device and gave it her own stamp. And without you realising, it sucked you in and got you invested in it.
Alynna may be a 22 year old PI but she has been forged through hardship and doesn't quite fit the mold you want to give her. After her mother and later her uncle die, she has to fend for her self and decides to take over her uncles Private Investigation business. Alynna is independent, feisty but also snappy at times which I found a tad annoying but excusable given her age and the changes she's going through.
One night whilst following a suspected cheater she bumps into Alex Westbrooke. Their chemistry is immediate and damn near combustible. Their hot encounter turns out to be the catalyst into finding out that Alynna is not human at all but a full-blooded Lycan, born of a True Mate pairing between her human mother and powerful Lycan father.
I really liked how Alicia Montgomery put her own stamp on this as well. Her Lycans may also hide in plain sight but they have their own unique history, background and customs. Her spin on this was interesting and I wanted to read more of it.
As Alynna struggles to accept her new position in life along with learning and controlling her Lycan side, Alex also struggles with his undeniable attraction to her. The two made for an interesting pairing though there were several times when I wanted to hit Alex over the head for his stubborn way of thinking.
We also get several POVs. Alex and some of the side characters get small snippets which set up their respective books further down the line nicely. Alicia Montgomery has put a solid foundation, with this book, in her building block to create a great PNR series.
My only quibbles where the fact that I could see where the plot was going (that could be just me though), we didn't get a resolution regarding certain things(which we will hopefully see in the second book) and that the book needs better editing in places. Some words missing, different pronouns used, kept taking me out of the book when I don't usually notice such things.
My thanks to Alicia Montgomery for giving me the opportunity to review her books and also giving me another PNR series to binge on.

Story and characters never reached their full potential.. 3.5 stars
I wanted so much more for this book. The storyline was lukewarm, the romance was almost nonexistent, the danger was watered down. I feel like the author could have done so much more with this story but didn't flesh it out fully. I kept reading because I kept hoping that it would get better but the story maintained its 'meh' feeling. I don't know whether I'll be continuing this series, although I enjoyed her dragon series more :(
I just... Meh. I kept waiting for the FMC to show a spine about something. She has like a 5 second tantrum once. When she's basically told sorry but you now belong to the clan and will have to marry for politics. She's literally over it in a split second and hugging her brother a moment later.
This chick just comes across like a complete airhead, honestly. She comes home to dudes that broke into her place and demands she go with them. She agrees happily, and in the car - which she realizes they've locked her into - asks where they are going repeatedly. No one answers, but she doesn't get alarmed or angry. She's brought to a guy who gets in her face and yells at her, with his head security dude dragging her around by her arm. That encounter ends with her being tranq'd... And she wakes up chained in a room. And she is literally NEVER MAD. Passively accepts everything they say or do. Doesn't even do much more than blink in surprise when they tell her about the shifter world. And that the yelling in charge dude is apparently her long-lost brother. Goes along like a little doll when they take her shopping, dress her up and tell her she's going to a ball and doesn't have a choice in anything.
When a few weeks later, brother finally deigns to have dinner with her (not that she was mad about him not speaking to her again for weeks after the whole drugged-and-chained bit, because she never gets mad about anything), she's informed that they are having dinner that night and it isn't a request. And further, that now she has to go to a spa to be primped and made up and clothed to go to dinner with him. And again, her input is not welcome. They actually SAY that, and she says okay.
What the fuck, you guys?
This was gross to me, across the board. And Alex was meh, there was no spark, and then she hurls herself at him and she's a virgin. So yeah, we're just getting allllll the tropes here.
Okay, look, when I'm reading smutty paranormal romance novels, I have different expectations to other genres. Not lower, because I don't believe in judging different genres against each other (each are valid and deserve their own space in the world!), but different. I'm not expecting as much in terms of a complicated plot, world, characters, etc., but I am still expecting there to be a plot, believable characters, and a world that makes sense. Unfortunately, Fated Mates did not have any of these things.
Let's start with the world. It's an urban paranormal romance set in NYC, so the New York side of things makes sense, for the most part. But the lycan side of things? It's a hot mess. There isn't a tonne of world building, but at the same time it's a super complicated world (the lycan world). For a society that is supposedly tiny (there aren't meant to be many lycans in the world), they have an incredibly complicated and convoluted government and social system, which honestly really didn't make any sense - I'm still confused as to how the magic system and the government even works.
Now, the characters. I'll start with Alex, because there's really not a lot to say - he's completely one dimensional and lacks personality. We literally know nothing about his personality except that he's stoic and 'manly', and originally from Chicago. That's it. That's his entire personality. At least until the epilogue, when he weirdly shows a bit of personality that just seems to come out of nowhere? And then, there's Alynna. Alynna is everything I hate to see in a main character - she's immature, whiny, a complete pushover (she just goes along with everything), and quite frankly, is just plain annoying. There really isn't anything to like about her.
The romance between Alex and Alynna was simultaneously nauseating and completely unbelievable. First of all, it was complete insta love. Like, 15 pages in and they're already going at it. They had no chemistry whatsoever, and there were very few scenes showing any actual emotion, it was just all sex. And I get it, it's a smutty paranormal fantasy - but if you're going to put a plot/romance in there too, it has to be believable. And the fact that neither of them realised they were mates? The stupidest thing I've ever heard.
The writing was, unfortunately, quite frankly bad, and definitely needed a few more rounds of edits. The switching POV's that go back in time and showing the same event twice was annoying and unnecessary, the book was full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, and there were numerous times when things were repeated or actions didn't make sense (ie characters changing positions/locations without any explanation).
So, overall, I can't say I recommend this book - although if you liked The Boy Who Sneaks In My Bedroom Window, and want a similar style book with older characters and paranormal elements, you might like this. Otherwise, do yourself a favour and stay away.
Shifters, true mates and a heroine who is a PI unaware of her shifter heritage and royal shifter heritage at that, this sounded great but the romance was barely there and the action was lacklustre.
If you want a very very predictable story, this one is for you. There’s no real plot. Couldn’t find myself to care for characters especially FMC that let’s her love interest walk all over her and her feelings… But hey they’re true mates so I guess in the end it doesn’t matter 🙄
Could have done without the pregnancy especially since she is only 22 and was a virgin ….
And did I mention predictable??

Had potential but fell flat for the most part. It feels unfinished and severely underdeveloped. The characters did not have any depth to them and I felt like the “love story” was childish. I did not feel like I know any of the characters or even understand why they do the things they did.
Another awesome series from this author . What could be better Lycans , death threats , love and Romance , and the chance of True Mates for all . This is going to be a wonderful series .This is just the beginning.
I wasn't really into the romance aspect of this book between Alynna and Alex. Honestly if I were to just rate this book on solely their romance it would be 3 stars or 3.5 max.
What I LOVED about this book was the sibling relationship. Grant and Alynna meeting each other, finding out they're half siblings and then actually growing to have a sibling relationship. I loved all their scenes. How Grant becomes an overprotective brother to his sister despite only knowing her a few weeks at first. Here is one of those scenes about well... dating:
.“But, you can’t go making rash decisions about things like this. You will be wooed, flattered, showered with gifts and praises. It will be overwhelming, plus you’ll have to suppress certain instincts. Lycan sex is different. You’ll have urges--” “Oh God please!” she held her hand up towards him. “Stop right there! I’ll do whatever you want, but I don’t want to hear the birds and bees talk from my brother!”
Grant burst out laughing and Alynna could laugh along as well. They looked at each other, and Alynna felt this weird, yet comforting feeling as that last word hung between them. A pleasant, ocean-spray scent filled her nose as Grant stepped closer to her and wrapped his hands around her upper arms.
I love how they grow closer throughout the book and how she finally accepts being Lycan and part of a clan, as well as accepts other clans and clan members like Liam. Honestly Alynna had more chemistry with Liam then she did Alex.
Despite reading this book because it was a "romance" book, I preferred the family aspects over the romance. However Nick and Cady are a whole other story (literally and figuratively). I loved all their interactions in this book and they seemed to have great chemistry. I'm pretty site their book is next and I hope it doesn't disappoint.
Alynna often acted like an immature and spoiled brat. Alex acted like an insecure jerk. His burning hot and cold - especially after taking Alynna's virginity was annoying. She had every right to be upset after he spent the weekend screwing her, then dumped her (cruelly) and then showed up at bar with a woman who was interested him... Then after not speaking to him for weeks, as soon as he walks up to her at a ball, she screws him and he walks out on her right after. Then, days later, he shows up at her apartment, screws her and leaves her a THIRD TIME.. ... WTF.. . Have some self respect Alynna!!!!. She should have ditched Alex for Liam. Instead, she dated Liam while continuing to screw Alex. I can't decide if I should try the next book or not.

I just couldn't put this book down. I fell in love with the characters and story line. It had hot and passionate sex scenes. A great story with drama, laughter and a little mystery throw in to the mix. I can't wait to start the next book.
It all started with a promise of a great story. But the middle and the last couple of pages turned me off. They came out of nowhere and felt not true to the story or characters (Baby doll??!?!). The plot often times just fell flat. Also, the resolution of their romance could have been executed in a better manner. (I felt like the entire plot was building down to a moment that was sneaked in the last three to four pages—and rather than savoring it, the author just wanted to get them over with. Atleast that was my impression.)
Not to say it was all bad. Just that it could have been better.
What an absolutely amazing story! This book has been on my to read list for a while, but I’m not sure why I never started it. The characters are fantastic! Each turn of the page made me fall even more in love with them. They each had pasts, and personalities, and a depth that had me looking for them in the streets. And the story was totally enthralling. I love how the author brought the characters together and put so many obstacles in the way of the HEA. Each one just added another layer to the story, and I couldn’t put it down. Now I find myself falling down the series rabbit hole and I can’t wait to read the next book. After reading this one, and the heated innuendos, I have to believe that it is going to be epic.
Oops, your Mama and Uncle forgot to tell you something important.
Have to admit the beginning was not my cup of tea. But I quickly warmed up to the characters and enjoyed the story. Looking forward to reading Nicks story and hopefully the SF Alpha, and her Brothers.
Such a great story about Alex and Alynna. Everyone feels like they’re not good enough at one point and when they realize they are, then ending is that much better! I can’t wait for the next one.
This is a good start, I hope all the books in the series are just as good. The only part that I didn't like was it seemed they weren't quite in sync with their wolf, almost like it was separate from them and they needed to keep that part of themselves containing but, other than that, it's a good book to pass a quiet afternoon with.
I'm puzzled as to why i haven't picked up this series before!!
It was fun to read! The characters were enjoyable, the plot fun and the beginning of a back story nicely woven in but not too heavy. The budding romance between the main couple Alynna and Alex ...you could feel the heat off the pages from the beginning. Yes there was a lot if sex scenes but tbh they suited the book. Again the only downside was the use of the word c**t which is the only swear word I really hate but that's just a personal thing.
The only problem or small issue was every now and then a person's name would change- I think just a few slip ups when being read by the beta readers but nothing horrendous that it impeded too much.
Ok so! We start with our female lead 22 year old human PI Alynna Chase. She's investigating a cheating husband and follows him into a bar called "Blood Moon" where she watches him slowly chat up a woman half his age. So engrossed in her case she misses the guy behind her until her speaks to breaking her turn round and lose all her words and sense and can only stare. Yep we meet out male lycan - Alex. Something seems to make Alynna go dizzy and faint so Alex takes her to the staff room to catch her breath. But he finds himself completely drawn to her and our first physical attraction is witnessed.......until Alex pulls away and accuses her of all sorts of things that Alynna has no idea about....until he shows her her arm.....that is now furry with claws at the end of it...in shock, she blacks out.
Cue Alynnas world as she knows it ending.
While she's unconscious tests are done and it's discovered she's the alpha of New York's half sister. A result of a True Mate conception and therefore a full lycan. Only she didn't know because as her father was coming away from the hospital he was killed on a car crash.
She's very untrusting as she's been alone for a long time. But she feels the attraction for Alex. But as soon as it comes out she's half sister the Alpha, Alex becomes cold and distant. He is there for her security and nothing more now. His playful and flirting nature stopped and Alynna has no clue why.
The thing with True Mates....the first time they sleep together a pup is conceived.
on the night of Alynnas 'coming out party she was flirting with the Alpha of San Fran Sisco on the balcony outside and Alex could no longer contain his attraction and jealousy.
Terrified of what the Alpha will think Alex requests to be removed from Alynnas security. He goes back home to Chicago a lot. he does everything he can to avoid her.
Meanwhile....Alynna hurt and lost she starts to show the early signs of the pregnancy.....shes tripled her eating habits, she's sick often....and snappy.
Someone attempts to kill her by slipping pound in into her drink. Had she not been pregnant it would have worked.
And yes the Alpha was pissed!! But it also became obvious that they were true mares to have become pregnant so quick.
One if those books that has a HEA but with a problem lurking in the background that you know is going to get worse before it gets better. someone put poison in the glass of champagne of Alynnas. First how did the waiter get passed security checks? How did the poison get passed?
And most of all.....who is he working for? And why do they want to harm Alynna?
In face this was One of those books I really enjoyed reading that I didnt want to put it down. I only put it down to sleep!!!! So I read it in 2 sittings!!!!
This is the first book of Ms. Montgomery's that I've read. While I enjoyed the story, there were some minor editing/proofreading issues I found. Nothing that prevented me from finishing the story, but it did lessen the overall enjoyment.
I liked the characters especially Alynna and Alex. I do wish there had been a bit more development in the actual relationship and characters (especially Alex). It was rather lust oriented with Alex being a bit of a numbskull (imo) for a large part of the story.
I did enjoy the way Alynna's brother reacted to her existence and how he was protective of her. Oh, and his mom was a hoot. I totally loved her! The other secondary characters were very interesting as well, especially Cady and Nick.
I liked the world building in the story the most. I loved the contemporary theme and that the Lycan society isn't stuck squarely in the Middle Ages. The true mate thing is basically insta-love, but it's tolerable under the circumstances. I like how the clan/pack live in plain sight, but are still hidden from society.
Overall, I did enjoy the story enough to start the second book, "Blood Moon."
Writing quality: Okay-to-Good Violence: Some Sexual content: Some Narration: Third person Plot: Predictable Mood: Light-hearted & Suspenseful Pace: Fast Character development: Semi-developed
This was good! I loved the relationship between the siblings and how they came to love and protect one another. I am intrigued by Nick the beta...... There's going to be a good story about him, I can feel it! I liked the intensity of the hero but the heroine came across as whiny and immature at times though it wasn't too often that it made me dislike her. The love scenes and the relationship were rushed but good. I didn't like the addition of Liam or the other chick, and found it not adding anything to the story but definitely taking away.
All in all I really enjoyed the story and it kept my interest and curiousity to know more through the whole thing. I even set aside another book I was really interested in to continue with this one, so that is why I can overlook the things I didn't like and the editing errors (there were a lot) and give this higher stars. I received this book as a gift from the author and I'm really glad I did :)
Thank you Alicia for contacting me and asking me to read your books. I can truly say this was an awesome read. It's a story about a young lady who doesn't know about what she is till she is out one night at a club and meets this wonderful man. After passing out in his arms the real story begins and she finds out a lot about her past. Someone is trying to kill her though. Will they be successful in doing so?? Will everything come together in the end?? I try and not leave spoilers I think people should just read a book and form their own opinion in this case I will be recommending this book to a few of the ladies I work with. So would I recommend this book YES
2021: What’s better than reading a full series of true love? True love with a twist.
2017: (First time) Finding out you have a half brother, that your dad loved you, but died the day you were born is enough to make anyone feel like they are loosing it. But to top that to find out you are 100% a Lycan, Tops it's all. I loved this book, just when I thought I knew what was going on yeh author seamlessly threw another twist into the mix. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves paranormal.
*I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this advance reader copy and was not compensated in any way.*
I really love this series. Montgomery writes fun, full-blooded characters and gives each a unique and interesting personality. The mythology she spins is fantastic as well.
I actually read this after I read the 5th book, "Taming the Beast", and while I knew who'd get together with whom, that knowledge didn't hurt this story in the least. (And c'mon now y'all; we romance fans all know who's gonna end up together. Don't we?)
Highly recommended series from an author who I've now put in my "Must Read All The Things" category.
