Kiera is overweight. And she hates it.
But one night changes everything.

Her friends present an opportunity that seems impossible to believe. With a single spell, she can have the thin physique she’s always wanted.

But all magic comes with a price: no sex or she’ll revert back to her old body. Kiera accepts the cost. It’s not like she has men lined up at her door. Obeying this one tiny rule isn’t difficult at all—until she meets Cain, a sexy stranger harboring his own supernatural secrets.

When a slew of unexplained murders force Kiera and Cain together, they have to face the horrors of their pasts. Will Kiera realize she is worth more than her outward appearance? Or will she make the wrong choice and lose everything—including her life?

Review
I think I am constantly saying that I will read ANYTHING from Ms. Martin because I love her work so much….but when she approached me to review this story…I was hesitant….for so many different reasons.  First, I have done the Paranormal Romance genre to death a few years ago and thought I have read every single fucking story premise out there….so I thought this would fall into the same category.  Then, it’s about a girl who is overweight and that touches a very sensitive area with me, since I am struggling with depression over the same thing.  I put on my “big girl panties” and agreed to give it a shot.

So I read the first few chapters and I’m struggling with it….I’m having a problem with her ex who beats her for being a big girl, I’m having a problem with her hiding out in her house (I do the same) and I’m having a problem with her hiding her body with big clothes (that hit way too close).

Then *wham bam* - she chooses to have the body she only dreamed of in exchange for never having sex – now why all of a sudden are men paying attention to her?  That’s what pisses me off – Luke – one of the guys whose hair she has cut for months never paid her any attention until she was thin.  Then he was all over her to go out on a date and couldn’t keep his hands off her.  During a conversation with Luke, Kiera asks him “Why didn’t you ask me out before?”  Luke doesn’t even try to cover up the reason and that’s when we learn just how shallow people can be!

Now Cain – he never tried to hide behind a façade – he wants attractive women – no matter what type of paranormal creature they are…he’s been around for centuries and NEVER ONCE has had more than a few fucks with each female.  Well that is until he sees Kiera for the first time and he wants nothing more than to fill her hole, but Kiera has other things on her mind.  She can’t have sex….no matter how hot this guy is…and it turns out that she is the FIRST female to turn Cain down.

Now Cain can’t get her off his mind…she is taking over his thought process and he will stop at nothing to make sure that he gets her….but all through this….there is a serial killer on the loose and he is gunning for a particular red-head that he is searching for and has been for years.

So throughout this book – we have life lessons, suspense, romance, angst and most important a fan-fucking-tastic surprise at the end! And this is the moral to our story! Damn - I loved it!

So again…Ms. Martin – keep me in mind for your next one….even if it’s Christian Romance, hell, even a reference historical non-fiction!

Istyria book blog - B's world of enchanted books

*I received a beta copy of this book from the author for review. Thanks!*

3.5 stars

It’s not every day that you stumble across a book in this genre that gives such a beautiful message. Honestly, this book made me feel confident about my not-so-perfect shape. Next to that we have a pretty original and cool story.

Keira hates the way she looks. When her friends give her an opportunity that seems to good to be true, she doesn’t hesitate. With a simple spell, she gets the body she’s always wanted. The only downside to this story is that she can’t have sex or she’ll go back to her old body. That’s not a cost for her since she doesn’t have any men lined up at her doorstep anyway. Until she meets Cain, the ridiculously handsome were-tiger and a soldier of the Eternal Forces. When a couple of unsolved murders forces Keira to live with Cain, they have to face their own pasts. Will Keira realize that outward appearance isn’t all that or will whe make the wrong choice and love everything?

There are a couple of things I want to talk about. First of all, this is a beta copy so I get that there are few typos and I don’t care about that, but there’s just something about the writing in the beginning that irked me. I don’t know what but it seemed so awkward and going to fast. But once I was used to the writing style I got through this book pretty fast so I guess that was just me.

Second thing is the romance. It felt like insta-love or insta-lust or whatever. And I didn’t like it. Probably because I didn’t like the characters all that much either. Keira is way to obsessed with the thought that nobody can love her if she isn’t size zero. I get where she comes from, but please… Do you have to put a spell over yourself and go through all that trouble to realize that the thing you always thought was a lie? If you’d just gone out or something, you would’ve met someone too. And Cain… Oh my god I really don’t like him. He’s not my type of guy and the fact that he was sweet to Keira in the end, doesn’t make up for the fact that he was a player for the biggest part of the book.

Okay, rant over. Sorry about that. Those are just two things I didn’t like and that’s just me. Someone else may not have a problem with those two points at all so don’t let my opinion keep you from trying out the book. The story is cool and original and I liked that a lot and fans of the genre should definitely read it. And it gives an awesome message about inner beauty.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Ok so i gotta make a few statements before i get my review rolling....
1. I wasnt really sure about this book but because I enjoyed everything from Megan AND I love Paranormal, I gave it a go.
2. I am a complete and totaly addict to this series and will basically do whatever to get more from the series!!

This book starts and you are DRAWN IN Completely and totally. I mean I didnt want to put it down. I sat and read like the first 40% in one sitting. Keira is in a BAD relationship with Roth. WE see the abuse happening and basically are waiting for him to kill her....not good right. She is a broken woman who feels that every "wonderful" statement Roth said about her being fat, ugly and unworthy is true. Soooo her friends get a gypsy to curse her. She becomes the perfect size 0 instead of a size 18. She goes out and meets hottie Were-Tiger Cain.

Ok so Cain is such a DB ....like OMG he is soooo awful but I loved him completely. He owned the fact he was not a relationship guy. He will give you a good few minutes and then be in his way. He never lies and pretends there will be more ever. He gets everyone and everything he wants...PERIOD!! He sees Keira and basically tried to sex her up at the club. Well she almost gives in but remembers "sex mean the curse is BROKEN" and she goes back to size 18...ahhhh....no way will that be happening for her. She she runs like crazy. Cain is stunned....who runs for him and who turns HIM down!! So Cain becomes a pathetic hot mess wanting Keira but basically screwing up at every corner with her. I mean to say he will pay to have her for a night just to get her outta his system....*Cringes* Yeah that DIDNT go over very well with Keira!!

So we have all this relationship will they or wont they drama happening when there are a bunch of murders happening. They are all red heads like Keira and then she is even attacked. So Cain (Alpha Male in a huge way) basically keeps her in his apartment BUUUT Keira will not have it soooooo.....she goes out on a date ...with a human....just to annoy Cain...Did i mention I kinda love her too!!!

So the book has Cain and Keira denying their feelings, trying to find the bad guy and even begin to "date"......I loved seeing Cain become a sweet little pussy cat over Keira......AWWWWW I know...adorable.

ANNNY way, we find out who the bad guy is and WOW Good one. WE also find out if Cain and Keira are each others Foerh...wanna know what that mean? Better read it.....but I promise you that if you like paranomal you will loooove this one!!

When Keira is presented with an opportunity to change her weight, she's quick to take the plunge. The one condition of keeping her new figure is that she must not have sex. Easy peasy for a chick who hasn't done the horizontal tango in quite some time. Except on her first night out she manages to catch the eye of Cain who seems to know exactly how to heat her engine. (sorry couldn't help myself there)

In all seriousness, this is a great story. I've never read any of Megan's work prior to this and I found myself engulfed in the story from the first page. The story starts off with a nightmare that Keira is having, only it's not really a nightmare but more of a reliving an abusive relationship that she was in. When I say abusive, I mean that she has scars all over from her boyfriend stabbing her. So you add that in with the fact that throughout their entire relationship he was calling her a fat bitch, suffice to say she's got some serious image issues. So of course when she's given the chance to change her appearance she goes for it. I don't think that that made her weak. I don't know one person who when given a magical spell to look "perfect" in their mind, they wouldn't jump at the opportunity.

Cain's character was a bit of a cliche for me. He was your typical shifter womanizer. I mean all it took was one crook of his finger at a woman and she was following him to the club's bathroom for a bit of fun. So of course when he meets his soul mate, she is reminded of his playboy ways and isn't convinced that he isn't just after her because she's the one that he can't have. That's not to say that I didn't like his characters, because I did. I felt like the poor guy had a major case of blue balls throughout the story because Keira would give him the green light and then at the last second throw out "NO!"... every single time. I mean I don't have a male's anatomy and even I felt the pain.

All in all Megan did an amazing job with this story. She not only had paranormal and suspense but she incorporate two very deep issues. One being what most women and men face, a look on what society is portraying us to look like. The fact is, we are not all super model thin. And to be honest, I watched a Miss Universe pageant once, I was horrified when the model put her hand on her actual hip bone for the cat walk pose. I don't ever want to be THAT skinny but sure I'd love to shed a few pounds... or 20. She also touches base with domestic abuse and how it alters ones thinking. For so long Keira put up with her boyfriends abuse because it was never "that bad", but the fact of the matter, bad shouldn't even be in your vocabulary when talking about your treatment from others. With all the elements that Megan brought to the table I definitely think that she's an author to be reckoned with. She brings a lot to the table and I cannot wait to read more of her work.

So a while ago I hosted a cover reveal for Skin Deep and there was just something about the blurb that begged for my attention. This book literally begged me to read it. I had been talking with some other bloggers on Facebook who had also shared the cover reveal and the author mentioned that the book would be ready for Beta readers soon and I remember joking that I would love to volunteer. At the time I assumed she would already have a team ready and waiting so I was surprised when she said she'd love to take me up on my offer. A few months later and here I am, having just finished reading this book and pretty much the only coherent thought going through my head is Wow!

I loved Kiera, right from the very first page. That first chapter was horrific but it gave us a such an insight into Kiera's life at that point that it was invaluable. I know some people may feel that Kiera's reactions to her body are over the top extreme, but I think maybe some people are more comfortable with the way they look/feel. Not everyone has that and some of us have no reason to feel that way. Kiera however has every reason to feel that way. Ever since her mom died she has had people telling her she's fat, mentally abusing her at every turn. And then she ends up with a guy like Roth, who not only mentally abuses her, but physically too. Now Kiera has not just her size to deal with, but the daily reminders in the scars on her body. To be given the chance to get away from the thing you feel has caused you so much pain, has held you back, I think most of us would take it if given the chance, I admire Kiera for taking the risk. For trying to make her life better. For trying to be happy.

Cain grated on me the first time we met. I rolled my eyes and inwardly groaned at the over the top Alpha male bedding every female that crosses his path. I remember thinking 'good luck trying to tame that beast'. Well Martin doesn't just succeed at taming him, she does it in such a way that he doesn't come across as being pussy whipped, it doesn't ever feel forced and leaves the reader (or at the very least this one) with a very attractive Alpha male who cares deeply and wants to protect the object of his desire.

I'm not going to say much more because I don't want to spoil it for anyone and I honestly don't know if any of it will change between now and the final edits. I will finish up by saying i genuinely cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!

Skin Deep really thought me a valuable lesson about how to love yourself. In a way, it showed me how to change my opinion and to feel comfortable with my body. A real lesson, based on a story to say so. The author introduced us from the start to Kiera, our main character who hates her body and will give anything to have the perfect look. She goes into extreme hating herself, and she has a good reason too. Being bullied as a young girl and ever since her mom passed away, every single person told her constantly she is fat. As if problems weren’t enough, she has the misfortune to meet Roth and end up going out with, realizing later that he wasn’t the right person for her. Roth not only did he called her fat, and ugly and constantly abusing her mentally, but in the end he showed his true nature and abused her physically.

After getting away for all that troubles, and trying to survive, Kiera now has to deal with her true form and the scars on her body from the past. After a while, her friends give her an opportunity to look the way she desires, just by making a little spell. So, Kiera accepts the deal, but in order to look the way she wants, she has to stay boyfriend free, more exactly she isn’t allowed to have sex. But, that isn’t a problem for her; she doesn’t have a list with boys that are waiting in line for her. If she breaks the deal, her body will turn to her true nature.

Everything it’s going perfectly for Kiera, until she meets Cain the soldier of the Eternal Forces. She tries to not think about him, but when a couple of murders are unsolved, Kiera it’s forced to move in with Cain. From that point everything changes, they will start talking and falling in love. But is Cain going to stay after seeing the true Kiera for what she is? Is he still going to love her afterwards?

This story was unique and with a lesson that needs to be learned. I think, the author managed to put on the paper how complicated life can be and how you can make the worst decisions and not even realize. You have to love yourself no matter what? You are who you are. Thank you for the opportunity of reading this book, I really loved it! I highly recommend this book to anyone!

Kiera has been put down because of her weight. From her boyfriend to others they all are mean to her. When she is granted the opportunity to be thin she jumps at the chance. After all all she has to do is without a relationship or sex. Being fat she sees know way she will ever break the spell. She does fine with it at first until she has to stay close to Cain after some murders. He is a were tiger and a soldier used to having women jump at the chance to be with him. He doesn't expect to find his soul mate or that she will not jump at the chance to be with him. They both have secrets they will have to come clean about if they are to find happiness.

This is the second book by this author I have read and I loved the first one and enjoyed this one just as much. Not only does it have a good plot it also has a great lesson in it as well. Kiera has been abused in so many was and doubts her self worth. She thinks she has to be a perfect looking person to find happiness. That is seen so many times in todays times. You also have Cain who while seems like a playboy you see he cares about Kiera and has lots of patience. He has to with her as she has to deal with her issues first. his book also has the paranormal to it that I love and the Eternal Forces is explained nicely. I loved everything about this book and I will definitely recommend it to many people. It is well written, has a wonderful plot and a great lesson. I hate all that Kiera goes through but it all has it's part in who she becomes. If you love a book with great characters, paranormal and one you don't want to put down till the end pick this one up.

As I started the first chapter, I had my doubts. I was worried that the obvious moral would overpower the plot, and character development would fall by the wayside. Boy, was I wrong! There was so much more to this story than a lesson to learn!

The synopsis doesn’t give anything away. I had no idea the genre twist it would take and I’m on the fence whether or not to discuss it. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone else, but at the same time, it’s a big part of the book and nearly impossible not to mention. Let me just say, keep an open mind and be prepared for anything.

I really enjoyed the variety of characters, from strong and silent, to shy and wounded. The sex is hot, strong and animalistic. On one hand, you have the classic Alpha male, but on the other hand, you have an equally Alpha female. Kiera just doesn’t know how much power she has yet. She sees herself as weak and unattractive, and it takes a major shift in her world for her to learn just how mistaken she is. Cain sees the parts of Kiera that are buried deep inside, and I love how loyal he can be!

The writing style is just as strong as the characters. Megan writes with confidence and flair, with a perfect balance of exciting twists and character development. It’s well edited and easy to read. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with it and now I’m hooked! :D

The Eternal Forces will be a series to watch out for. I am crazy curious to see what kind of trouble they get into next!

Skin Deep is the first book in the Eternal Forces series by Megan D. Martin. Kiera hates being overweight until one night when a few of her friends get a gypsy to cast a spell on her. She gets the figure she has always wanted. The only problem is she can’t have sex or the spell will break. Kiera has had a rough life with her ex Roth. It seems her low self-esteem led her to him and his destructive behavior continued to reinforce this is all she deserves because of her weight.

Cain is an alpha male were leopard. He is a hot and sexy man. It seems that Cain went through woman like water until he meets Kiera. There is something that pulls him to her. I loved that Cain’s love for Kiera did not completely tame him.

The chemistry between Cain and Kiera is blistering. I loved that Cain knew something was off about Kiera immediately just not what it was. Kiera had to battle internal demons before she could even have sex with Cain because that would expose them to him.

The main and secondary characters were realistic. I just thought it was a big jump from the first chapter to the second. I could not get a true feel for Kiera wanting to be thin that she agrees to a gypsy casting a spell. Overall, this was a great book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

You don’t read a lot of books about overweight MC and that’s only one twist on Skin Deep.

Kiera longs to be slim and sexy, but nothing she does works, then her best friends Darla and Maryline find a solution. They found a gypsy that will turn Kiera skinny but she will revert back to her original shape if she has sex. Kiera jumps at the opportunity because she doesn’t have anyone lined up at her door. What she didn’t expect was Cain. There is an instant attraction between them, but Kiera holds back b/c she know the consequences of having sex and not to mention her not so happy past relationship.

Kiera’s past is about to catch up with her and will she finally realizes that beauty is Skin Deep. Will a stubborn tiger finally see what’s been in front of him the whole time?

All those will be answered and more in this first in a series by Megan D. Martin

This was a very original book that I highly enjoyed and finished in one sitting. I was rooting for Kiera to find her happily ever after through the entire book. I found that I could relate to Kiera as well. I’m not overweight but I am a little self conscience and Kiera was the same way. They way she is describe she is tall and big, but I didn’t see her as big at all. She was just a wonderful person that wanted people to notice her because they liked her and not how big she is. When she finally gets what she wants, she finds out is not easy having a sexy body. People now only want her for her body and it draws a lot of attention to people. One of those peoples is Cain. He is not a bad guy, but it did take while for me to like him. Actually it was almost to the end of the book when I started liking him. He was just a pig. OK to get away from him. I found the world fascinating, especially the bar, where everyone can be themselves. I want to know more about the other creatures and more about Cain’s past. I NEED MORE!!!

Overall: This book is not only about coming out of your comfort zone; it’s about loving who you are and not wanting to change for anyone. You are beautiful no matter what! This book was a self discovery journey as well as supernatural love story, although at times it may not seem that way. I recommend everyone read this book, you won’t regret it.

Quotes:

Did a blue-haired Muse just try and make me one of her love slaves? Kiera laughed out loud. Seriously, what has my life come to?

True beauty wasn’t something on the surface or in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes it was hidden, lost in a world where perfection was an aspiration, yet it was something that could be accomplished by no one. No one was perfect.

True beauty is more than skin deep.

Keira’s been through hell and back, and got the freaking t-shirt to prove she survived. Now she is scarred for life, in more ways than one, and hides herself away from everyone by wearing thick layers of clothes and staying in her apartment – unless she is working.
One night her friends (the only two she has); Maryline and Darla help Keira getting her biggest wish; a perfect, slim, and beautiful body. By using the magic of a gypsy, there’s only one, tiny hang-up. Keira can’t have sex – ever. If she does, she will get her old body back faster than Bambi loses his footing on the ice.
But what happens when two very lonely souls met each other under circumstances far from ideal, both need each other, but have a hard time forgiving their own pasts to see what’s right in front of them?
I truly enjoyed reading Skin Deep, and thought it was hilarious, heart breaking, steamy, frustrating and truthful.
Cain is a…. uhmm… well, he’s a player. He drinks, smokes, eats and have sex. Not necessarily in that order btw. As soon as he gets what he wants from the flavor of the hour, he’s already moving on, forgetting her name, even her face. When he runs into Keira and she turns him down, he is SHOCKED. Nobody has ever turned him down. Ever. At the same time, the tables are truly turned on him, because he starts running AFTER Keira. It is HILARIOUS to see how Cain is utterly confused by this, he even tries to explain it with different things, even when the truth stares him right in the face. I have to say though… More than once, I wanted to slap the shit out of him for the way he behaved.
I can understand Keira and her fear, her pain. I understand her completely. I like how she changes in this book, from being insecure, to accepting and believing. To see her beginning to believe in love, and dare to hope again. Wow. A m a z I n g.
And then we have the twins; Blaise and Sparcc, their commander; Ryder and the Muse; Ren. Each and everyone are fascinating, and the things that get hinted at…. Oy. Do I have to wait?!
All in all, Skin Deep was a wonderful read, frustrating at times, but amazing nonetheless. Can’t wait to see what happens next!!

Skin Deep is a book about a relatable subject, a woman wishing to have a different body. A story about learning to accept who we are and about loving ourselves so others can do it too.

Kiera has gone to hell and back. After moving away from a violent and abusive boyfriend, she is now alone surrounded with few friends and a boring life. Always dreaming about having the perfect body she has come to hate herself. Many of us have had or have issues with our bodies or a part of it. When a gypsy offers you the chance of a lifetime, what would you do?

Things get complicated when she gets her wish but at a high price: no sex. So imagine what a mess her life becomes once she meets Cain. He is sexy, wild and a man whore.

I like how good both characters are and how well they are developed. Their pasts are well thought and are complete. Some of their past experiences are pretty cruel and difficult to imagine but they make the story even better.

This is a story about healing and how Kiera and Cain have to come to peace with their flaws and secrets before taking their relationship to another level. I love the book because of this because the sexual tension had a meaning.

A story full of tension, with the temperature always at its peak and emotions running wild. The book has a fast pace and a great language. The author creates a great world where paranormal creatures are real and have lots of fun.

Kiera ran from a violent relationship, even though she believed her abuser was dead. Her weight and verbal abuse by just about everyone she's encountered gives her very low self esteem. She really doesn't believe that any man will love her for herself, and she makes a deal with a Gypsy that has a condition that makes her life even harder.
Cain is a Weretiger, part of an enforcement squad in Maine. He's always heard of the feorh, but doesn't believe he has one. He lives with the specter of killing his own father during the Black Plague period and believes he will never find a woman to love.
These people come together in a paranormal tale that speaks of a modern day Cinderella story, but not any Cinderella story I've ever read. I love this book. It has everything to hold a reader's interest. Great characters with serious flaws, a plot line that never falters, and a rocking ending.
Megan D. Martin yanks the reader right into the story on the first page, showing us Kiera's defining moment, where she must survive yet another physical attack by her abusive boyfriend. The realism of the reactions, of the dialogue, and of the situation will hit home for anyone who has gone through this, in addition to how Kiera avoids relationships after moving far from where she was attacked. The meeting between Kiera and Kyle brings home how each of their insecurities hold them back. Additionally, the appearance of an old enemy to distract Kyle at a pivotal moment is done with ease and perfection.
I highly recommend for everyone who loves onto only romance but also suspense.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review. Here goes!!

I absolutely adored this story! I couldn't put it down, and was a bit gutted when I had to stop reading as we had company!!! I also picked it straight up at 8am this morning the minute i opened my eyes as I was desperate to finish it!!

The characters in the story, Kiera and Cain, were brilliant. Really like able characters, and they have you rooting for them throughout. Shifters are my thing, therefore I was really excited to meet the were-tigers in this book. And they didn't disappoint! Megan described all the Immortals rally well. Sometimes stories with different 'beings' gets you a little confused, but Megan done a great job with her characters.

The pull between Cain and Kiera is amazing, will they end up together? Read the book and you will find out exactly what goes on!

The story is full of twists and turns, surprises and shocks, and it will keep you guessing right to the end!

A fabulous read from Megan, and I'm looking forward to reading more!

AHHHH that first chapter sucks you in and you don't want to stop reading after that! This is my first paranormal book by Ms. Martin and I can't wait for the other books in this series (Skin Deep is a standalone)!!

Kiera is overweight and hates her body. Her old boyfriend always made her feel ugly and since she didn't want to be alone, she accepted it and started to believe him. Something tragic happens and then 4 years pass. Kiera moved to a new state, has a job and still hates the way she looks so she doesn't go out much. Her friends decide to bring in a Gypsy who can give Kiera what she wants, the perfect body, but it comes with a price. She can't have sex or the spell will break. That doesn't seem like a problem until she meets Cain. The sexual tension is HOT! There is also a serial killer in town killing red headed women and since Kiera has red-hair, things get complicated.

I highly recommend this if you like paranormal books with some hot, sexy moments, and a deeper message that beauty isn't everything.

Since I have bought this book I have lost count how many times I have read it. I love the characters, I love the world, and the best part is the message about body image. It is something every woman can get behind plus it has hot alphas, a mystery, and magic. I don't know how you could ask for more. :)
