The Derrings #2

Too Wicked to Tame

Rate this book
Would a Reluctant Beauty Ever Wed...

Headstrong Lady Portia Derring has an impeccable pedigree...and not a penny to her name. Which is why she is alone on the rain-swept Yorkshire moor, waiting for a wealthy earl she has never met but whom her family insists she wed. When she's nearly trampled by the blackguard's stallion, Portia is more determined than ever to refuse Heath Moreton's suit. Handsome devil he may be, but she could never marry a rogue who's so clearly out of control!

A Wild, Incorrigible Beast?

An avowed bachelor, scion of the notorious "Mad" Moreton clan, Heath won't be shackled in matrimony. Why then does this rain-drenched beauty excite him so? Desire consumes him, but the eminently beddable lady resists his well-practiced seductions. Now only one route remains: Heath must ignore his bad blood, vanquish his inner beast...and prove to Portia that she's the only woman capable of taming his heart.

Pseudonym:
Sharie Kohler

Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.

A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature - teaching English seemed the natural recourse. After several years teaching high school students to love Antigone, Sophie resigned with the birth of her first child and decided it was time to pursue the long-held dream of writing.

In less than three years, her first book, Once Upon A Wedding Night, a 2006 Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Nominee for Best First Historical, hit book shelves. Her second novel, Too Wicked To Tame, released in March 2007 with a bang, landing on the USA Today Bestseller's List.

I know I'm the minority, but I loved this book. I know that it's not perfect and has in fact enough faults, but in the end it moved me and made me care for the characters enough to bring tears in my eyes and ache for them. And that's what counts in the end.

Lady Portia is the sister of an impoverished duke who is obliged from her family to find a wealthy husband and thus save the family for ruin. But she's a bluestocking who doesn't want to marry and has managed for 5 years to get away from any marriage-traps her family has set. Lord Heath, Earl of Moreton has a lot of money on the other hand, but also comes from a family with history in madness. He intends to never marry, neither he nor his two sisters, in order to not pass the madness to future generations. However, his grandmother and Portia's own grandmother, have other plans and want them married. Though each of them fights it for their own reasons, the attraction between them is sizzling. Heath's reservation and self-control seem too hard and difficult to break. Sometimes he lashes out in her, believing Portia is a willing participant in his grandmother scheme and wants to bring him in a compromising situation so he'll be forced to marry her anyway.

This was a deeply emotional and heartwrenching romance, with a reserved, proud, hard-headed hero and a levelheaded, average-looking heroine and I liked both of them. Readers however who don't like many verbal fights between the leading couple or the hero lashing out unjustily to the heroine won't feel the same. There are some minor faults, like the hero's eyes changing 3 different colors (due to emotions) 4 or 5 times in each chapter -from gray to blue or black-, the heroine thinking the same thing over and over again, but in the end they were not enough to make me dislike the book. It's a rare case that I feel so close to the main characters and their ordeal and that's what made it a winner in the end for me.

Ummm almost good but some off-putting things and certainly nowhere near book #1.

The H is annoying and a self-centered ass who never really grew on me.
The h lives in her own isolated world of insecurities, hurts, parental/familial betrayal and impractical dreams and aspirations. She shows flashes of spirit between going back to being the dis-spirited tumbleweed that she is. I remember her from the first book and had great hopes for her but she lets down. So many wasted years, although I could kinda relate with...
Escape from the tedium of another Season, from the auction block, from her family’s nagging. From a pervading sense of isolation—of holding her breath and waiting, watching, searching every room with senseless hope filling her chest.

I didn't like the ow's role and importance in his finally seeing sense.
And her cold, scornful and scheming sister-in-law gets a book of her own? I would think that his sisters were better h material! But then a (later) widow has better prospects as a h than a 30 plus woman and a girl given to frolicking with grooms in stables. Those high standards!

I really loved the beginning of this book, it hooked me right in with the great characters and fantastic chemistry between the two leads right from the start. The opening scene with two mysterious strangers meeting on a dark and stormy night really drew me in. However, as the book progressed and I got to know the characters better, I was disappointed.

Portia Derring works hard each season to turn away the many suitors her family tries to force her into marrying. Her brother is a Duke but the family's funds are depleted. At the start of the book, they send her off to meet Heath, Earl of Moreton, the rich grandson of Portia's grandmother's friend. As Portia and her maid encounter problems on their journey to the Moreton's, Portia discovers the Earl of Moreton's true wild side as he appears out of nowhere to rescue her. Both Portia and Heath have worked hard against their grandmothers' insistence that they marry for as long as they can remember. Can they keep resisting marriage after meeting each other.

I like a grouchy hero with a heart of gold, think Beauty and the Beast. This is how I thought Heath was at the beginning. But as I got to know him better, I realized that he was just mean. This type of harsh hero just isn't appealing to me and I couldn't really forgive some of the things he did and how he treated Portia. Portia was a pretty likable heroine with an independent streak. Sometimes, it wasn't believable that she would put up with a man like Heath.

The characters' chemistry jumped off the page at the start but I lost respect for Heath after a while. The characters fell into a pattern of fighting and then 'almost' making up. I would have preferred more of the fun romance from the beginning. overall, Sophie Jordan is a great author and I'm glad I discovered her books. The hero in this book just wasn't appealing to me, even though I will continue to read her books.

Sophie Jordan is one of my favorite historical authors, and this reminded me yet again why. Her books are like a comforting cup of hot cocoa. Sweet, cozy, and though there's usually some angst you know it'll work itself out and leave you feeling warm and content by the end.

The hero in this one was an ass throughout most of the book, but the heroine gave as good as she got and refused to cow before his grumpiness like he was expecting. I also adored their meet cute, when the heroine's carriage is stuck during a storm so she's trying to walk in the muddy road to the nearest town when he happens upon her on horseback. He tries to be condescending and make fun of her (he nicknames her Miss Mud Pie), and she throws mud in his face as an eff you lol. That first chapter immediately set the tone for their banter, and I enjoyed it the whole way through. What kept me from a 5 star was I wouldn't have minded an extra few scenes of him being softer with her and showing his romantic side, rather than always being angsty and grumpy until the very end.

And put you through all of this'"

Liked it ok for the regency it is *but* was highly annoyed with one of the side character's actions toward the ending. I know that the character gets her own book as well, while I dislike this character on so many levels, I'm still going to read it strictly because I want to see if it's mentioned in her own book and am particularly curious to see how the author writes the heroine in a favorable light after what she did in this one...

Kendini Aşka Bırak
Sophie Jordan,

Lady Portia Derring is once again sent on a journey by her greedy relatives to find a rich husband who can make up for the family debts. On her way she is ridden over by accident and the rider takes her to the nearest tavern. This beginning is really charming and funny. Of course, the two of them feel drawn to each other, but they do their utmost to keep the other from noticing. Besides, Lord Moreton does not have much to oppose to the sharp tongue of Lady Portia except for a confused grumble. So far so good. That's all very nice. But unfortunately the rest of the book does not have much in common with the lively beginning. Lady Portia eventually arrives at the destination of her journey and, of course, it turns out that the husband she is about to "catch" is Lord Morteton. He doesn't want to marry at all because of a family illness. He makes his rejection very clear. Lady Portian then becomes a complet different person: She endures his rudeness just so she can read some books in his library ... hello ??

The charm of the beginning ends after the first three chapters over. What a pity.

Well, welll, well. What a surprise!
My first Sophie Jordan and, though I'm one with those people who truly appreciated this gem after so many years, it totally blown me away by the finesse she honed her characters from rough edges to a briliant diamond they become.
Let's be honest that it's heavy laden drama from the moment Heath and Portia saw each other and it dragged up to the very last end.

Some will be annoyed by the drama and stubborness of both hero/heroine of the story especially as the problems and skeletons of each family were revealed but that's the beauty of this. I always thought that if you truly love each other, no mountain nor past will hinder the greatest gift that will ever be bestowed upon them. But as I deduced from the end, they can't help themselves of how they become because they were victims of the tragedy of their own families. What I like about them both were their strong determination to fight for their beliefs and seek for their own freedom even if they became selfish bastard because as I conclude later on, it were the only things that truly matter and distingiushed themselves from the root of their own misery. It was the only way to survive the madness and driven them to thrive, to live each day. I cannot blame them both for their thickheadedness and stubborness because it became the shield and comfort when no one else understand them. And these are the reasons why they became the perfect human fiction and perfect couple. No mister nice guy and no prim heroine waiting for her knight in shining armor to swept her daintly feet.

More like a 2.5 stars but I just didn't like this so much to give it 3...

It's not that it was that bad a book just nothing spectacular plus I had some major issues with both the characters and the whole story.
Both main characters acted stupidly more times than I cared to count while the major plot twist right before the end was unbelievable and can I say stupid again? See where my problem is with this book???
All that drama was both unnecessary and unbelievable.
And don't get me started with two secondary characters whose actions where plainly cruel yet described as something normal...

This book started out good with the hero Heath…man he came across very, very sexy, especially with his witty retorts to the heroine and the scene in the pub with the serving girl…lol I blush just thinking about it…then Heath turned into a complete jackass. I mean don’t get me wrong the heroine wasn’t better; she was a sharp tongue female that I didn’t like much. I like a strong willed heroine but to an extent, she was just over the top with her stubbornness and sassiness….I don’t see how that can be attractive…constantly having something negative to say with a smartass remark at every turn. I think the storyline wasn’t all that great and then to have the hero do a complete 360 on his feelings regarding marriage and his feelings regarding the heroine was a little hard to believe. And his mistress was so not needed in this story. She kind of contributed nothing of importance, I mean his sister Mina could have found the letter that was of grave importance to Heath….and as a human being with emotions, I find it hard to believe Heath/hero was with his mistress A LOT for 8 years and had absolutely no love or emotions for her but he meets a smart mouth chit on a muddy road that he spends 90% of the story arguing and saying hateful things to each other but after a couple of weeks, he LOVES her…I don’t buy it. The hero could have been a very steamy, romantic hero if it wasn’t for this storyline lol…not the best by Sophie Jordan.

Not quite satisfied with the ending. Heath grew rather annoying later on. Bitch of the year was given to Astrid. I never knew someone as hateful as her. Her doing was unforgivable. How could she drugged Portia and gave her to marry against her will? Her being the next heroine was beyond me. I don't think I have the stomach to read her as the heroine.

EDIT:

Oh! Turned out I've read Astrid's book before, and I didn't finish it. She's still The Bitch, I guess.

This started off so well and then just fizzled. I think I started not liking the hero and heroine the last 1/4 of the book. They were both just too stubborn towards the end. Made no sense. It's that, "I won't marry without love" excuse before the sudden happy ending...just in the nick of time rushed climax. Easy and fast read. Pretty darn HOT in some scenes.

I didn’t like how Heath never believed that Portia wasn’t trying to trap him. Even in the end! They don’t even address it. They both were a little ridiculous. There was some bear which kept me reading but I didn’t care about either character and the Simon thing at the end felt forced. I’ll read the next one in the series to see how she wraps it up.

Not as great as the first book, but had its charm and chemistry. Portia does not want to marry in order to remain independent and leave for adventure anytime she wants. On the other hand, Heath ca not marry due to a supposed disorder in his family. Both are attracted to each other, but are afraid to express themselves and depend on a significant other. I felt this plot was a difficult task to complete and I give the author credit for not falling into the weeds. However, we still suffered with happenstance and fake drama that sometimes were not interesting.

Plus: The characters are interested and move the story along. Sometimes, I wish Portia had thought more of her future and position and take more action for herself. I really liked the start of the novel and wish we had more time with Portia and Heath before they really learn of each other.

Misses: The play of mystery and drama- talk of the moors and a reckless male protagonist named Heath brought slight memories of Wuthering Heights. However, Heathcliff, regardless of pain, never denied himself. Our character Heath often held back and suffered for trying to do the right thing. I was annoyed when the truth came out because Heath and his sisters lived half lives. The ending was sweet, but the Portia's situation with her mother was never resolved.

Overall, I am glad that the author focused on Portia for the second book (I wish Meredith and Nicholas made an apperance). The plot could have been better, but the chemistry is still there.

They were so stupid. Especially her, like, oh, "I see my family's desperate for money, but Imma fuck up these potential matches and dream of traveling with dear mama who abandoned me." Then "I'm gonna be responsible. Astrid's right, I have been selfish, lemme now get married, but not the rich man grandma recommended cause he 'broke my heart' even though he's got the money to fix everything." 🙄
And this man, with his whole "I can't love. The madness! Can't even let my sisters be happy." Poor Mina. And Constance was just a bitch for plot points. Ugh.
And what was the point of even mentioning like Mrs. Wollstonecraft? Just to oh, sprinkle in some ✨️ feminism ✨️??? To give, "she's not like the other girls"??? Cause she was still hella stupid.
And the sex scenes were so rapey. Like, the dude kept insisting she was lusting after him and beguiling him, but like dude, YOU walked into the room where she was sleeping and stood over like some creep. Then practically forced yourself on her, the only 'clue' we have she was interested, is that she didn't say anything, but like she barely had the chance! And the opera scene?! Yeah, lemme convince you to marry me by forcing myself on you. Wtf!? I can't believe I read this shit. I've read other books by this author and I don't recall them being so ridiculous.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I remember enjoying the first book in this series, so I don't know what the heck happened here. The most I can say for it is that I was able to finish it. The heroine was fine. She had some spunk and a mind of her own (and was bookish) and I liked that. She didn't want to be told what to do or forced into marriage by her family. I respect that. But the hero. UGH. NO NOT WANT. This is supposed to be a Beauty and the Beast type thing...but it does not do that storyline any justice and I just hated the hero so much. He was so stupid and blind and if he stopped to actually think for like, five minutes, this whole book would have had a better ending. There was no groveling. No apologizing for acting like a complete jerk for 90% of the story. I don't understand what the heroine EVER saw in him beyond like five seconds of him being almost kind of nice. I could not buy into the romance because there was just no reason for the heroine to fall for him and there was no actual chemistry. And in a romance book, I need to be rooting for the hero and heroine to be together. I actively wanted the hero to just fall of a cliff in this one. I think you can skip this book.

This book was worlds better than the first in the series. The first one left a very bad taste in my mouth.

The good- the writing is good. I enjoyed the style. The heroine- Portia- was also great at the start. Very strong. Knew what she wanted.

The not so great- The hero -Heath- was VERY quick to call Portia horrible names, degrade her, convinced she was a gold digger amongst other not so nice things, despite the fact that she continuously proved otherwise. Like the first book, the hero assumes the worst in the heroine- she is female- so she can only be a liar? He accepts the word of a vicar he doesn’t even like, and concludes she must be a lying whore.

Portia degrades throughout the book. She starts off strong. And then… I don’t know… her reasons for not marrying Heath near the end were lacking-weak.

Then the plot. There was just too much.
They’re at his estate for most of the book. Then BAM they’re in Town, BAM she is being courted by someone else, BAM KIDNAPPING! oh! It’s over!

Also no repercussions for the horrible sister in law.

So I didn’t HATE it. But I wouldn’t read it again.

The story was good, and I liked the lead character but I’m not fond of curse stories, nor Heath cliff-like romantic heroes, which this book had—and he’s even named Heath!

A young woman named Portia, a Duke’s daughter who is tired of being controlled by the men in her life and shopped as a titled bride to anyone with money, obeys her grandmother to visit her grandmother’s friend and see if she will be a match to the friend’s grandson, an Earl. She runs into bad weather and a broken carriage, so she goes out of the carriage to walk to town—and runs into a handsome stranger who seems to taunt her at the same time as he attracts her, and she him. Of course this is Heath the Earl, and though he finds her attractive, he does not want to marry and have children because his parents were mad and he doesn’t want to continue the line. The grandmother keeps throwing them together, so they get to know each other while struggling to resist each other. I liked most of the characters and the plot—the ending is great—but Heath just wasn’t that attractive to me in his meanness.

Madness is love

Heath has a heritage rooted in madness or is it? Portia has been sent to entice him into marriage by her grandmother! Portia has no intent of marriage and neither does Heath! Many woman have tried before but none lit his soul until her! Portia knows that her family has tried to sell her for 5 years but has dreams of one day reuniting with her mother! Heath watched his father, mother and brother did of madness? But was it! Portia and heath have a scorching chemistry that ignites the pages!! Stubborn to a fault neither will deny its love not lust! But when Portia is kidnapped and sold once again by her family all bets are off! Heath races to save the one woman he can't live without! I wish there was an epilogue to show how these two stories intertwined with previous one!!!

Maybe not really worth 4 stars, but I finished it in a day while neglecting a bunch of work I really should have finished so it was good enough to hold my interest.

There were some things that annoyed me though. The "absent mother" subplot seemed a bit redundant and could have been removed.

Given that neither the hero nor the heroine wanted to marry it would have been interesting to see them team up against their families rather than the constant mistrust he shows to her.

Like the first book in this series, it finished rather abruptly. It's like Sophie Jordan gets to a certain point in her book and loses interest then just wraps it all up as quickly as possible. There is no real resolution - one minute they can't be together for 'reasons' then suddenly they're madly in love without the actual confrontation or revelation.

The second book in Jordan's "Derrings" series actually has a Derring as the main character this time. We met Portia in the first book and for a change the character pretty much stayed the same (a lot of books seem to have a character act one way as a side character and differently when they get their own story). I really like her strong personality and they gave her a very strong love interest. I don't know if I was just noticing more in this book or if I'm getting more annoyed with the "arrogant man who doesn't take no for an answer and uses the woman's desire against her until he finally declares his love so it's all okay" trope but Heath was pissing me off by the end of the book. I liked the plot and all the conflict but that one aspect was getting to be too much.
