Interview with Author – Jeanette Vaughan
Author Bio:
Jeanette Vaughan is an award winning writer and story teller. Not only is she published in the periodicals and professional journals of nursing, but also in the genre of fiction. Out on her sheep farm, she has written several novels and scripts. Her screenplay “Angel of Mercy” won the outstanding nursing research award from Texas Tech University Health Science Center. In addition, she was named Distinguished Alumni for the school of nursing in 2001 for her written work and volunteerism for the Sydney Olympic Games. Her debut novel FLYING SOLO was a finalist in the Beverly Hills Book Awards. Jeanette has practiced nursing in the fields of critical care and trauma. She is the mother of four children, including two Navy pilots. She lives in a Victorian farmhouse out in the pastures of northeast Texas with her sheep, chickens, donkeys and sheep dogs.
What inspires you to write?
Strong, determined women who change their corner of the world. There are so many truth based stories that need to be told. There are Belles of Steel out there whose heroics have never been recognized! I love the history and culture of the Deep South. There were atrocities among the finery. Plenty of pioneers that made their way. These women and their antics are what get my pen going!
Tell us about your writing process.
When a story comes to me, it unfolds in my head like a movie. Sometimes I write out a brief outline. But after reviewing it, I just sit down and start Chapter 1. After the hook, the book unfolds in my head as as I go. Beginning, middle, end. . the simple three act plot. I can see my character walking around and hear what they say. I can visualize what they are wearing. What they are eating and drinking. Who they are as people.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I wouldn’t say that I hear voices. But as I am typing the dialogue, it is like seeing them on camera in my head!
What advice would you give other writers?
Dont’ let the process of writing bog you down. Find a simple group of beta readers that are not friends and show them what you have written. Lot’s of great writers groups on meetup.com
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I had a mentor in my field of nursing, a very special Dean. When I was about to turn 50, she said “You know, you write great stuff. I know you are published in the nursing community, but when are you going to give yourself permission to write what you love?”
Wow…what a novel concept! And that was how I began putting my work out at age 50!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the access of ebooks is going to continue to drive the industry, although I have a Kindle. . I am much more of an old fashioned page turner. I think that the pressure put on writers to get an agent is just bunk!
