Interview with Author – Jonn October
Author Bio:
I live in a faux Tudor “mansion” at the base of a mountain covered in snow, uphill from a creek and a row of narrow poplars, on a lawn spotted with fruit trees and white asters. There are dogs about me, and tulips, and several grape vines, and there are bats in the eaves.
I write because I can. I enjoy a good book and hope to pass on the favor.
Jonn October is a pen name.
What inspires you to write?
A gut-level sense of adventure, love of words, and enjoyment of a good story on all levels, whether it be pop or literature.
Tell us about your writing process.
I start with an image and then suss out a new reality from that point.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to them. I suppose I talk them into existence, but then I listen to them. Otherwise, they would feel contrived. There are no tosses of auburn hair or starring into the mirror or other devices. At least with this book, I want the reader to see the characters themselves as the reader sees in his or her individual eye.
What advice would you give other writers?
Work hard play lots. For Pete’s sake, get over emotionalism. It’s all work, whatever way it pans out.
Also, if you’re Canadian, avoid most Canadian writers. They seem, almost invariably, to be navel-gazing merchants of crass and lousy.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
A mixture of impatience and a reluctance to dictate my fate to some Ativan popping agent in some city some place.
I would rock whatever connections you have. If you’re an MFA by-the-book type, then you’ll likely have an easier time getting into legacy publishing because you already speak the language. If you thrive off the difficulty of realizing your own existence, then go independent. Whatever way you choose, it will be incredible work. There are no short-cuts. Period.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The same things I think about the British Empire.
What do you use?
Professional Cover Designer
What genres do you write?
Adventure-thriller, literary.
What formats are your books in?
eBook
