Interview with Author – Melissa Snark

Author Bio:

A friend asked me once how I chose my pen name. I told her the following: “Melissa, because when people mix up my first name, it’s the most common goof up. Snark, because it amuses me. A) I love the word ‘snarky’ and B) I love Lewis Carroll.”

As an individual, I’m sarcastic, stubborn and blunt to a fault. I have a strange sense of humor and I like to laugh (usually at my husband or children), but also at myself. I’m not particularly extroverted, although I do enjoy time with my family and close friends a great deal.

At the moment, I’m a stay at home mom who writes in my spare time. I’ve got a B.S. from Arizona State University in Business, and I’ve worked a variety of different jobs, including as a medical device documentation specialist, a technical writer, and an auto liability adjuster.

I live in the San Francisco East Bay of Northern California with my husband, three kids, and three cats. My hobbies include roleplaying, cooking and reading.

I maintain a humor blog, which is updated every weekday. The Snarkology of a Romance and Fantasy Author… http://melissasnark.blogspot.com/

I enjoy hearing from my readers, so please drop me a line at MelissaSnark at gmail dot com.

What inspires you to write?

It shuts up the voices in my head. Lol Seriously, I have an involved imagination and I see entire scenes in my head. Writing stories down helps me to purge my mind. Fortunately, I never run out of material so I’ve always got more stories in my head than I can write.

Tell us about your writing process.

My writing process involves a whole lot of coffee and a keyboard. I’m a seat of the pants writer for the most part. Sometimes I do use a chapter outline but I never have a written outline for the entire story. I do know the beginning, middle and end of most of my stories in my head before I begin writing but sometimes things change course midway through.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?

Listen. But I don’t have full two-way conversations with my characters. I’m not quite that crazy yet. Lol

What advice would you give other writers?

Write and keep writing. And read a lot. Those are the two sure fire ways of improving at your craft.

How did you decide how to publish your books?

Honestly, I’ve been writing and submitting for so long I don’t really remember what initially prompted me anymore. Before I finally received my first acceptance letter, I amassed enough rejection letters to cover the outside of my house.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?

Self-publishing. It cuts out the middle man and allows the author at least a shot at making a decent living. Of course, it is imperative that the author undertake all of the tasks that the traditional publisher performed, especially obtaining professional editing and cover services, but all of those things outsourced at affordable rates. It’s definitely worth the investment.

What do you use?

Professional Editor, Professional Cover Designer, Beta Readers

What genres do you write?

Erotic romance and fantasy

What formats are your books in?

eBook
