Interview with Author – Sam Hammack
Author Bio:
Sam Hammack lives somewhere between the endless cow pastures of Kansas and the rolling green hills of Missouri. His days are spent running his small business, his evenings are filled with the company of his wife and their beautiful baby girl, and his nights are spent pecking away at his laptop in the continuing quest to write the next adventure. In whatever scraps of spare time he can find he enjoys playing a game of pool or Clue, and watching baseball, but not necessarily all at the same time.
Sleep, it would seem, is optional…
What inspires you to write?
The birth of my daughter inspired me to rediscover the love of writing I had in my teens and twenties. I wanted to show her that she can do anything if she puts her mind to it. I want her to know the power of creativity.
This particular story has been revolving around in my head for several years, but it evolved into it’s own unique monster once I began to actually write it. The original story idea has changed significantly from the first drafts to now. Now I feel as though it almost writes itself! I have really enjoyed getting to know all the different characters, and I can’t wait to write the next chapters!
Tell us about your writing process.
Since I also work during the day, and like to spend my evenings with my family, I find that I do most of my writing at night, after everyone has gone to bed. Of course, this means that I don’t sleep nearly as often as I would like to. But I don’t mind, because I am doing something I thoroughly enjoy.
The first novel (The Witches of Jericho) was written on the fly, without much of an outline. I liked the freedom of letting the story write itself, but I also ended up with over 60,000 words of unused material, since I kept running into “dead-ends”. Since that first novel, I now keep a fairly detailed outline of the rest of the Edenwitch series. This has really helped me write a much cleaner, more detailed prose, as well as make much more efficient use of my time. At the same time, though, I am always open to allowing my characters to run off in their direction if they decide to. Oftentimes they do! I feel that this is the best of both worlds.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I would say that I listen to my characters more often than I talk to them. Most of them are fairly headstrong, and enjoy doing things their own way. There are times, however, when I must talk to them, otherwise they may wind up going down a road which I know will lead to a dead end.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write, write, write! The more you write, the more you will learn about the writing process, and the more you will develop your own unique voice and writing style. If your truly want to be a writer, then you will want to write often.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I chose to self-publish. For me, this was an easy decision. My goal was to write a story that I myself would like to read, and to inspire my own daughter. I didn’t feel the need to try and sell the story to an agent or publisher. In today’s world, self-publishing is incredibly easy and rewarding. I enjoy being in control of the process myself.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the future of book publishing is bright indeed! You must wear shades!
