I liked “The Sound of Loneliness – it talks about something I recognise from the area I grew up in – it sums up the horrible sense of powerlessness perfectly.

Witty, honest, poetic and oh so dark, this book is really good. I gobbled it up in one sitting and have it on my list to read again – and trust me, getting me to sit still for that long is no mean feat.

I loved the texture of the voice, the characters, the pacing. It all felt… Right.  I think it helps somewhat that I’m British – I didn’t grow up in Manchester, but there was something about it that fit with my experiences.  I had a good childhood, but there’s still something to be said about growing up in the time that we all did.

But again, not for the faint-hearted.

Still, thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

[image error] About the book: Manchester in 1991 is a town suffering under the weight of high unemployment and massive government budgetary deficits that is plunging the UK into a recession.

To Daniel Crabtree, a struggling writer, it is the backcloth to his first novel, one that will see him become a famous published author.
