2nd May, 2012

I’m a bit up to my neck with deadlines at the moment so trying to stay focused.

I’m currently working on a draft of Quintana before it goes to edit later this month. I can say in all honesty that the end of the trilogy is everything I want it to be. Plus there's not a cliff hanger in sight. My wonderful editor Amy Thomas had this to say about Quintana of Charyn in her notes (with her permission)

Froi has developed over the course of the three books into such a brave, brave character, so devoted in his drive….he really is someone we can’t help but fall in love with. The themes of redemption and the complexity of personal and political conflict are all here; satisfyingly playing out the recurring idea that there is no completely irredeemable person or group of people (except for Bestiano and Donashe, perhaps); and the truth that realisations about others are often wrong or incomplete to begin with, and inevitably shift over time as characters surprise each other with their bravery, empathy and humour in the face of tragedy and hardship, and above all, with their common humanity.

Just a few other quick things with regards to updating events.

- I will in all probability be doing a Perth talk in September. Won’t be sure of a date until late July.

- Apart from San Diego in July, there’s a chance I’ll be part of an event at LA Public library later that month and there’s talk of an event on the East Coast. Fingers crossed.

Maggie Melina, please have an event in LA!! Comic-Con tickets are so much harder to get. I'm going up against people who fight imaginary wizards and warlocks in their (ample) spare time. If you need help finding a venue, etc, I absolutely volunteer! :)

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* Melina, I'm so happy to hear that the end of the trilogy is all that you want it to be! And I really loved reading this - I thought this about Froi of the Exiles:

"Froi has developed over the course of the three books into such a brave, brave character, so devoted in his drive….he really is someone we can’t help but fall in love with. The themes of redemption and the complexity of personal and political conflict are all here; satisfyingly playing out the recurring idea that there is no completely irredeemable person or group of people (except for Bestiano and Donashe, perhaps); and the truth that realisations about others are often wrong or incomplete to begin with, and inevitably shift over time as characters surprise each other with their bravery, empathy and humour in the face of tragedy and hardship, and above all, with their common humanity."

Please thank your editor for sharing! ^_^

Amy What a beautiful, and completely true, statement! Thank you so much for sharing!

Fantastic news about your U.S. appearances! It is my dream to meet you in person one day!

Alexa East Coast! :D

Stephanie Oh, Melina!
I'm so happy to hear what your editor has to say about the culmination of the trilogy and that of the characters and their evolution. I am so impatient to read Quintana!

I am also so ecstatic about seeing you at Comic-Con (Ariela will be living vicariously through me this around, as I did through her when you were in Roma.) I am crossing everything that you'll also be able to make that East-Coast stop. As you know, I live in the DC area, but my gang of friends, who also adore your work, would surely accompany me to where ever you'll be on the Atlantic coast. Heeee!

Adrianna [SypherLily] East Coast!

Tracey Minnesota loves your books, too! There's more to the U.S. than the coasts!

message 8: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Yes, there is way more to the U.S. than the coasts, but I would have no problem with you coming further up the west coast to Portland, Oregon. How can you visit the US and not stop by Powell's Books? (Yeah, you have a couple rabid fans selling your books up here.)

message 9: by Meghan (new)

Meghan So excited for Quintana already!
I really really hope that you are able to come to the east coast (and that it's somewhere I can get to of course).

message 10: by Melina (new)

Melina Marchetta Thanks all.

And I agree that there's more to the US than the coast, in the same way that there's more to Australia than Sydney and Melbourne which is why I really want to do a Perth event.

And I would jump at the opportunity to speak anywhere in the US, but it's all about bookstores, libraries and festivals organising and inviting writers to events. When you don't have a big commercial name it's really difficult to get an invite to smaller cities. I wish it was up to the readers because Minnesota, Portland and Austin would have been on my list.

And Maggie, as if the Goddess of Blood and Tears isn't more powerful than wizards and warlocks. If she can help end the curse of a kingdom, I think she can assist in an LA meeting.

Lauren So given there IS more to Australia than Sydney and Melbourne, any chance of a Brisbane visit too?? :-P
