About this author

With his first internationally published novel, Snow Angels, James Thompson proved himself Finland’s best and most popular representative in the rise of Nordic noir. It was selected as one of Booklist’ s Best Crime Novel Debuts of the Year and nominated for an Edgar Award, an Anthony Award, and a Strand Critics Award. His most recent novel, Lucifer’s Tears, has received critical acclaim from all quarters, including starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Kirkus, and seems destined for international success. His next novel, Helsinki White, is scheduled for U.S. release in March, 2012. He is also a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books.

I'm smiling as I write this. It's not that this pisses me off. I just find it humorous. I was browsing reviews of HELSINKI WHITE and some say things like "Thompson certainly gives a negative view of Finland," as if I've been mean and done a bad thing. Folks, I write Nordic Noir. Gritty crime. That's my job. I don't work for the Finnish National Board of Tourism. read more »

More of James's books…
“Years ago, when I was working on my master's thesis, I went to New York for a semester as an exchange student. What struck me most was the sky. On that side of the world, so far away from the North Pole, the sky is flat and gray, a one-dimensional universe. Here, the sky is arched, and there's almost no pollution. In spring and fall the sky is dark blue or violet, and sunsets last for hours. The sun turns into a dim orange ball that transforms clouds into silver-rimmed red and violet towers. In winter, twenty-four hours a day, uncountable stars outline the vaulted ceiling of the great cathedral we live in. Finnish skies are the reason I believe in God.”

“Güzelliğinin doğaüstü bir yanı vardı. Onun gibi bir yaratığın var olması mümkün değildi sanki. Bir hediye gibi görünen şey yanlış birinin ilgisini çekmiş ve öldürülmesine neden olmuş olabilir. Ne yazık ki dünyadaki birçok insanın güzellikle yüz yüze geldiğindeki ilk isteği, onu yok etmektir.”

Hi Graham, I think I'll just leave BITE MARKS as is. I'm hardly a master of the short story, just put it up as a teaser for the website. However, a few people, especially in the younger demographic, mid-twenties, have told me it's one of their favorites. It seems to strike some chord with that generation. I hope you enjoy HW!

message 7: by James

James Thompson Thanks Annie, I went through that stuff. The 3rd party content didn't work, and the widgets, well, they guide people to content I can't control, so I decided against it. I'm gonna do it the way you previously suggested.

Annie Always a pleasure to help, Jim!
If I can figure out a way for you to just add the book titles and the links to your reviews on your author page, I'll be sure to let you know.

EDIT: I've looked around a bit more and realized that your author page has features that are unavailable to me. However, I did come across this page: http://www.goodreads.com/author/how_to

It seems to offer a pretty good overview of how you can use your author page, including importing content from a pre-existing blog. However, I can't see anything that pertains to adding links to third-party content on your author page. If such a feature does exist, my best bet would be that you would find it in your "Author Dashboard". Another possibility might be the "Author Widgets". For more information on "Author Dashboard" and "Author Widgets", I would suggest taking a closer look at these sections: http://www.goodreads.com/author/how_t... and http://www.goodreads.com/author/how_t...

I'll keep you posted if I find anything else. Good luck!

message 5: by James

James Thompson Annie, you are too cool. I'll give it a shot. Mine are all online. I really just want people to be able to see the book titles and links on my author page.
Thanks, Jim

Annie James wrote: "Learning how to use this thing, I feel like a dufus. People have signed up to read my reviews, and I'd like to put up a few I've published. How do I do that? Anybody care to help me out?"

Hi Jim, here's how I would do it:

1. Perform a search of the book you want to review using Goodreads.com's search engine (top of the page)

2. Once you've located the book you're looking for, click on the title. This should take you to a page that provides a summary of the book and other details (editions, # of pages, publication date, ISBN, etc.)

3. Right underneath the book's details, you should see a section called "My Review". You can post your review in that section using the "add review" feature.

4. Click on "add review". This will take you to a new page where you can rate the book, write a review, and specify a few more things, like the date when you finished the book and such.

5. Write your review in the box underneath "What did you think?". You can preview your review (no pun intended) by clicking on "(preview)", which is right next to the "post" button.

6. When you are happy with your review, click the "post" button, and voilà! :-)

I hope this helps!
