He is a winner of the Christy Award for Excellence in Inspirational Fiction, and was a fiction columnist for Writers Digest magazine. He has written two books in the Writers' Digest series, Write Great Fiction: Plot & Structure and Revision & Self-Editing.
Jim has taught writing at Pepperdine University and numerous writers conferences. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara where he studied writing with Raymond Carver.

Veel heb ik al eerder gelezen, maar er staan wel wat praktische tips in.
Apart dat Bell de lezer/schrijver aanraadt om clichés te vermijden, terwijl hij zelf nogal eens clichés gebruikt (zoals in appendix B).
En om nog even wat muggen te ziften: "Moral duty is also a strong adhesive. If a mother’s child is kidnapped, for example, we understand why she doesn’t walk away from the action." Dat beschouwd hij in eerste instantie als een morele plicht? Het lijkt mij dat ouders hun kinderen beschermen uit liefde, of als dierlijk instinct.
