Lane Fox was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford.
Since 1977, he has been a tutor in Greek and Roman history, and since 1990 University Reader in Ancient History. He has also taught Greek and Latin literature and early Islamic history, a subject in which he held an Oxford Research Fellowship, and is also New College's Tutor for Oriental Studies.[1] He is a lecturer in Ancient History at Exeter College, Oxford.
He was historical adviser to the film director Oliver Stone for the epic Alexander. His appearance as an extra, in addition to his work as a historical consultant, was publicized at the time of the film's release.
Lane Fox is also a gardening correspondent for the Financial Times.
He is the father of the internet entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox, the founder of Lastminute.com.
They are not related to, and should not be confused with Robin Fox, anthropologist, and his daughter Kate Fox, social anthropologist.

L'intento che questo libro si dà non è facile, perché raccontare la storia dall'VIII secolo avanti Cristo fino all'epoca di Adriano in poco più di 600 pagine non è opera da poco. Robin Lane Fox però riesce a dare al lettore, soprattutto quello che ha bisogno di dare una rinfrescata a lezioni di storia che risalgono a tanti anni fa come me, una panoramica su questo periodo amplissimo, richiamando gli eventi fondamentali attraverso l'evoluzione di tre istituti/aspetti sociali importanti: l'esercizio delle giustizia, della libertà e il lusso. I cambiamenti che hanno subito questi tre aspetti nella storia in esame ci danno un'idea di come elementi fondamentali del vivere sociale, della mentalità, della politica e della filosofia sono stati causa e conseguenza di mutamenti profondi.
Il libro non è certamente esaustivo e non potrebbe essere altrimenti, visto il periodo storico affrontato. L'autore, conscio dello sforzo richiesto al lettore, ci consegna un testo scritto in uno stile narrativo scorrevole e accattivante e organizzato in capitoli brevi, in modo da dare respiro e ritmo alla lettura.
Interessante e utile come punto di partenza per chi volesse poi approfondire alcuni dei temi trattati.
Il libro non è certamente esaustivo e non potrebbe essere altrimenti, visto il periodo storico affrontato. Il libro più completo e chiaro che troverete dall'antichità! Perfetto? No, assolutamente. Eppure riesce a restituire un'atmosfera, due mondi con le loro mentalità e le difficoltà per un moderno di approcciarvicisi completamente. Da tenere sul comodino se si è degli storici antichi.
