This is the twenty first book in the Mech Warrior Dark Age series. This series is a continuation of the Battletech series. The books in this series, like the books in the original Battletech series, are by various authors. This one is by Jason M. Hardy and Randell Bills. The Republic of the Sphere has known a long period of peace and prosperity. Then the interstellar communications network a.k.a. the HPG net is destroyed by terrorists and many planets in the Republic find themselves cut off from the rest of the galaxy with communications taking weeks or even months. Unrest leads to several factions on several planets trying to overthrow the local governments and seize power for themselves.
In this one Danai Liao-Centrella is part of the royal family of the Capellan Confederacy. She must prove herself however as a leader in battle and as a diplomat for her star nation. Dooshen Liao, leader of the Capellan Confederacy, has decided to take advantage of the Republic's recent troubles and reclaim several star systems that were lost when Devlin Stone created the Republic of the Sphere. Danai is first sent to retake the planet Aldebaran and later to negotiate with the leader of the Oriente Protectorate, whose daughter is also her best friend. She soon finds however that Dooshen Liao has sent her on both missions without all the knowledge she will need to succeed. She also learns a devastating fact about Dooshen that he has been concealing for all of Danai's life. This book has many Mech battles and is also full of intrigue. It is another great read in this series.
