An Introduction at Ramsgate

Rate this book
A woman determined not to think about love. A man determined not to be ensnared.

Elizabeth Bennet is delighted to befriend the shy Georgiana Darcy while visiting Ramsgate with her aunt and uncle. She is less delighted by the young girl’s intimidating companion, Mrs. Younge, and by the mysterious, charming man from Georgiana’s past who seems to beguile her. The only person Elizabeth can think of to prevent Georgiana from making a terrible mistake is a man she has never met, Georgiana’s cold and absent brother, Fitzwilliam Darcy. But will he arrive in time to prevent Georgiana from throwing her life away?

Mr. Darcy has always resented fashionable resorts where every young woman is out to ensnare a rich husband, but it has been too long since he has seen his young sister, and he is determined to surprise her. And when he meets her new friend, the lively, teasing Elizabeth Bennet, his careful guard drops in a manner he never expected.

With Georgiana safe from Wickham’s clutches, Elizabeth is invited to Pemberley, where Darcy’s feelings for her grow while she is more and more drawn toward the kind but lonely man that so few people really know.

But Wickham is not about to allow Georgiana and her inheritance to escape that easily. And certain truths come out that might pull Darcy and Elizabeth apart.

The main emphasis of this story (in my opinion) is the friendship that develops between Elizabeth and Georgiana. The Gardiners have taken Elizabeth with them to Ramsgate. Elizabeth decides to use one of those swimming houses which are pushed out into the sea and there she meets Georgiana and encourages her to step out into the water.

As she and Georgiana visit back and forth, Wickham comes into the picture. He charms Elizabeth but something just doesn't feel right. Then there is the attitude of Mrs. Younge. She seems determined to discourage Georgiana from that friendship with E. As Elizabeth hears about or witnesses some of what is being promoted by Mrs. Younge and, even, some of what George Wickham seems to be persuading G. about, Elizabeth looks for a way to "guide" Georgiana to make better choices. When Fitzwilliam decides to make a surprise visit to Ramsgate, things seem to be now headed in a better direction.

Darcy is impressed with Elizabeth's relationship with his sister and so invites her to accompany them back to Pemberley. Soon we have Bingley arriving with his family. The author has a surprise here. (Although I was able to guess who Caroline's beau was.)

Darcy's and Elizabeth's relationship grows, and it was sweet to read of them teasing each other.

For me there was little angst in this story. There were a lot of sweet conversations which were enjoyable to read.

I just read this in August and can barely remember it. I do read a lot but that’s not a good sign. I guess I need to go back to taking notes.

Good Read
I thought this one one of the better “Ramsgate” stories I’ve read. Well written, and without the usual Darcy/Elizabeth misunderstandings along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed their relationship. This Darcy was a much more lighthearted fellow and didn’t refrain from teasing on his own part. No other Bennets appear, except for Jane briefly at the very end. Some minor proofreading misses. Clean content.

Entertaining

My first time reading this author. This is a familiar premise, which is that Elizabeth is on holiday at Ramsgate with her uncle and aunt Gardiner, and she makes the acquaintance of Georgiana Darcy who is there with Mrs Younge , her companion. Of course, Wickham shows up with his sinister plan to persuade Georgiana to elope. Elizabeth tries to advise Georgiana against doing anything rash and secretive. Darcy eventually shows up, and meets Georgiana's new friend, Elizabeth.

I have to give credit to the author for good writing. I enjoyed the clever banter between Darcy and Elizabeth. This was a much less stiff and formal Darcy. He was ready to be romantic from the get go, so the romance is lovely.

I deducted two stars for the very silly, ludicrous, and unrealistic situations and plots throughout the story. You have to go into this book without any expectations of great literature. From the start, we have Elizabeth running all over Ramsgate, going in a bathing machine, with no supervision, no escort, nobody at all. Where were her uncle and aunt? This would never happen. That's just an example of the many circumstances that will make you scratch your head or roll your eyes, and think "This is ridiculous!"

If you can get past the unbelievable plot points throughout the book, it's a light and pleasant story, and its well written and well edited.

A wonderful adventure with highlight on Georgiana

This is an excellently written variation with enough adventure and excitement to keep this reader engaged. Despite the focus on Georgiana and her encounters with Wickham, the author successfully balanced it with enough banter/exchanges between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet to satisfy the essential element of every P&P variation in this reader’s opinion; that is, a solid and sound foundation for a great romance between FD and EB. There are no loose strings in this one. It’s perfectly packaged and presented that will delight every P&P fan who loves JAFFs. Highly recommended indeed!

This variation was well-written and enjoyable, but the ending was unsatisfactory.

This book takes place with Lizzie on vacation the summer Georgiana was in Ramsgate. They befriend each out and Lizzie is there to support Georgina through the times of Wickham. It was a good plot line. I like that Lizzie and Darcy start becoming friends early on; it is a side we don't often see in variations. Pretty low-angst, quick read.

Mostly about the friendship between Georgianna & Elizabeth vs Wickham. Lizzy & Darcy don’t even get together until the very last chapter- boo.

An entertaining book

Not the first story where Elizabeth meets Georgiana at Ramsgate, but it is one that I really liked. I loved the interaction between the characters and Miss Bingley's part is hilarious!

DNF. The way Lizzy and Georgiana struck a friendship so quickly, use their first names after two minutes etc put me off straight away.

Delightful

-This is one of those stories where Darcy and Elizabeth's chemistry is so sweet and playful that I couldn't help but smile.
-I liked this particular Darcy. He reminded me of the teasing Darcy that joked about admiring figures from where he sat.
-I actually liked Georgiana and her storyline with Wickham.
-Elizabeth is the only Bennet in this story- no complaints there.
-A keeper.

Would've been a 5 star review if not for the the last to chapters why did the author have to throw in the misunderstanding of Darcy believing Elizabeth loved Wickham? It was a great read up til there.

This was an enjoyable book. It was well paced and kept me engaged. I liked the story and the characters, while sometimes OOC, were still likable and enjoyable.

Darcy was very different and had very little pride or struggles in this story regarding Elizabeth. I enjoyed his character and his banter with Elizabeth, so it wasn't too difficult to overlook his non-canon personality. I also didn't agree with Elizabeth's decisions regarding the whole Georgiana/Wickham situation. As a 15 year old girl without much sense of judgment and clearly being manipulated, I think E was wrong to not speak up at some point, but again, Elizabeth is not perfect either, so it wasn't hard to overlook it. Mrs. Young seemed to get off pretty easily and I don't understand how she kept her position past Ramsgate, but her role in the story was very diminished after that, so it wasn't really noticeable.

The relationship between Georgiana and Elizabeth was very heart warming and sweet and the developing relationship between D&E was very well done and was fun and witty and romantic!
The book flowed very easily and I enjoyed it from start to finish. I look forward to more from this author.

A Delight

It’s been some time since I’ve enjoyed a P&PFF as much as I enjoyed this one. The characters are very true to Austen’s originals, and the interactions between Lizzie and both Darcy’s are wonderfully written.

It’s always refreshing, too, when an author remembers that Darcy isn’t just the aloof and haughty man who insults young ladies he’s never met in public. He’s also the playful man who told both Lizzie and Caroline to their faces that he’d rather sit and admire their figures than join them and disrupt the view.

The author captures the balance of Austen’s Darcy well and the banter between him and Lizzie is thoroughly enjoyable without ever falling out of character for either of them. Their Lizzie is just as true to the Lizzie we all know and love, with her delightful impertinence and headstrong ways, but I feel like I tend to see Darcy miscast more often than she is.

I’m certainly looking forward to more from this author.

Despite its flat and unwit dialogue, I was enjoying this book well enough until the third act when A little out of character IMO. All these pages could have been better used if they had shown Elizabeth and Darcy pinning for each other and a better declaration of their feelings. The resolution seems hurried and poorly executed.

DNF @79%. I really tried to finish this but it just couldn't. It was like a soap opera. This wasn't a case of one character being OOC, they all were. And unlike the blurb suggests, Lizzy at first encourages Georgiana to meet Wickham. WTF? This is not what I signed up for. When a second character goes off to secretly meet a man, I quit.

Delightful!

A different take on Georgiana and Wickham in Ramsgate, as Elizabeth meets Georgiana first. I really liked how Lizzy helps Georgiana to come to her own understanding of Wickham's unsuitability.

sweet retelling

This was a sweet retelling and simple story with wickham as the central bad guy. The language and actions of Elizabeth was more modern as was the speech, but it was a story worth reading.

loved it!

I really enjoyed this narrative and getting to know Miss Darcy better. It was fun. Of course we hate W and Mrs Y but it was fun to see how Lizzy would thwart them. So good!

Fun banter

Loved the fun banter between the characters. Made them seem more natural, like real people. Great story. I really enjoyed it, though it seemed to fall apart a bit at the end, feeling rushed.

Cute banter between ODC. Misunderstanding at the end doesn't add to the story and seems thrown in, but it didn't drag out.

No understanding of Regency mores and an Elizabeth Bennet who was almost unrecognizable because of it. In almost every chapter she was doing something Lizzy would NEVER do.
