Before I Go

Rate this book
For fans of Nicholas Sparks, Mitch Albom, Charles Martin, and Richard Paul Evans, Before I Go is at once a tender love story with a twist, a profound portrait of life after loss, and an uplifting exploration of the numinous connections that give our lives meaning. The Notebook meets The Shack in this poignant tale about how the people we love stay with us forever...in sometimes surprising ways.

A year after her husband's plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean, Abby Gamble knows she needs to start moving beyond her grief. She and Ben shared a deep love, made even stronger by the heartache they went through together. But Ben would want her to keep living. So Abby throws herself once more into her cosmetics company--only to find herself at a crossroads when she meets Joel, a physician whose past is as scarred as hers.

Joel has never forgiven himself for a fateful childhood decision. That guilt has spurred him on to save other lives. When he meets Abby he begins to see a way forward, though Abby is holding back, struggling with the idea of finally leaving Ben behind.

Yet Ben isn't gone. Ever since his plane went down, he's been trying to make his way back to Abby. That journey begins on an island thousands of miles away, as Ben discovers his journal among the wreckage debris that has washed up on shore--a series of letters that recounts Abby and Ben's love story. Rereading his letters about the life they planned, and the joy and misfortune they encountered along the way, Ben knows what he must do. Somehow, he must set out to see Abby again--even if he doesn't know what will be waiting for him in the extraordinary event that he makes it home . . .

Wow, there is a lot going on in this book so here goes...Ben is gone after a plane crash, his wife Abby is left to pick up the pieces, Joel is a doctor Abby has started dating and he has a whole trunk of excess baggage himself. Christian is a billionaire who wants to build on the island where Ben's plane crashed. Every single person in this story is connected in mysterious ways.

This book was so emotional and has a lot of heartbreak in it. There is just so much grieving and loss. It is much more than a "woman loses her husband in a plane crash" story. It was a really heartfelt story that played with my emotions and had me feeling everything under the sun. I liked how the book showed that we never know what someone is going through so it is always best to be kind.

I loved Abby as a main character, she is strong yet sensitive, smart, and successful. And even though she was carrying a lot of grief she still managed to smile and be kind to others. There are a couple of twists at the end of the book and I in no way saw either of them coming, such a nice surprise. This was such a thought-provoking book about moving forward and the fact it was romantic and written by a male author was awesome as well.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Kensington Books, A John Scognamiglio Book, and Brian Charles for the giving of the ARC.

3.5 ⭐️

I “follow” Charlie Donlea. He is one of my favorite Suspense/Crime/Thriller writers.

Two days ago, I discovered that he was releasing a “romance story with a twist” under the pseudonym “Brian Charles” since it was completely different from anything that his fans would expect from him.

So, of course, I requested it!!

It is described as “The Notebook” meets “The Shack” and it’s an exploration of life after loss. Pay close attention to this description as it is quite accurate! And, throw “Castaway” into the mix.

It is sad but also saccharine sweet like a Nicolas Sparks book-and it does touch on faith, so be prepared for that. This is NOT a romantic comedy in any way, shape or form.

Nobody should have to endure what Abby Gamble has. The loss of an infant son, years ago and now the plane her husband Ben was on, has crashed into the Pacific Ocean. No wreckage is found and the rescue becomes a recovery mission.

Eventually, Abby will meet Joel, a physician with his own ghosts-namely a brother he couldn’t save when he was just a child himself.

Can two good people with survivor’s guilt, help each other to move forward or will growing close to someone new just lead to another painful goodbye?

This type of “romance” isn’t really MY kind of book because the leads are always a little “too perfect” and the “love” way too idealized -but if you are a true romance reader- BRIAN CHARLES does the genre justice!

But, I will be sticking to the books that Charlie Donlea pens!

My favorite part was the friendship and support that Abby’s sister, Maggie provided as they really were “best friends” as well as siblings!

And, I have to admit that the “twist” did catch me by surprise!!

This book will be available on September 27th, 2022.

Thank You to Kensington Publishing for the gifted copy provided! It was my pleasure to offer a candid review!

3.5 castaway stars

My good friend Jayme let me know that one of our favorite writers had branched out into a new genre, so of course, I jumped on board for a buddy read! This time Charlie Donlea, who usually writes suspense, has written a romance novel.

Abby Gamble is the main character, she’s founded a successful cosmetic business in Chicago, but her personal life has been filled with tragedy. And now her husband’s plane has crashed on the way to Australia.

She’s already made it through a round of grief and doesn’t know how she will get through this latest twist that life has thrown at her. She retreats from the world and tries to find meaning in the loss. Ben was her soulmate and the thought of life without him is too much to bear. How do you let someone go?

A year after Ben’s death, she meets Joel and slowly lets him into her life. Battling his own issues, Joel and Abby start a relationship while they continue to heal. Will these two find a happy ever after?

While this one is a romance, it deals with some darker issues and there are some faith elements thrown in. There was a surprise twist at the end that I did not expect. There is a fantastic sister relationship between Abby and her sister Maggie.

I look forward to Charlie Donlea returning to his usual genre!

My thanks to Kensington Publishing for the copy to read and review.

A Touching Chronicle of Loss and Love

SUMMARY
Abby Gamble lost her husband. Ben a year ago and knows it’s time she starts moving past her grief. That’s easier said than done. She and Ben had shared a deep love and even a loss, but they always knew their love would be forever.

Abby now focuses her efforts on the success of her cosmetic company. She met Joel, a physician, at a nearby gym during a workout. Joel’s past is just as troubled as her own. Joel was only a young boy when a childhood decision led to a family tragedy. His all-consuming guilt had caused him to choose a medical career, so he could help save people’s lives.

Abby and Joel embark on a hesitant relationship. Both are afraid of letting go of the past and reaching for the future.

REVIEW
BEFORE I GO is a touching chronicle of what it is like to lose and love again. It’s a cleverly woven tale of how our lives are interconnected with those we have lost.

Author Brian Charles’ inspiration for the book started with a vivid dream several weeks following the death of his mother. The dream assured Charles that his mother was good, and his sadness was ultimately replaced with a calm assurance. Dreams also play a significant role in the understanding of this story. Brian Charles is a pen name for a best-selling mystery writer who is no stranger to crafting a dramatic and compulsively readable story.

Charles’ intriguing characters drive this well-paced story. Abby will make you feel her despair and, ultimately, her hope. Ben will make you perhaps question his fidelity. Joel will show you the meaning of perseverance, and Maggie, Abby’s sister, will simply make you laugh out loud. The ending clinches the deal and will knock your socks off. It’s a moving and emotional story that is hard to explain to others, but that won’t stop you from trying. Charles has created a story written from the heart and one that will remain in ours forever.

Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a member of Influenster. Lately they’ve offered some deals where I buy a book on Amazon, then post a photo of it on Instagram, and they refund my purchase. Sounds like a good deal to me! I always read the book description and some reviews before taking them up on this; no need to waste anyone’s time or money on a book I wouldn’t enjoy. But so far, the two books I have gotten this way have been winners. That’s especially true in the case of “Before I Go.”

The book starts out with Ben’s plane crashing. Everyone on board is killed. Back home, his wife Abby is heartbroken. Over time, Abby meets Joel, a young doctor with issues in his own past. They get to know and love each other, against the familiar and charming backdrop of Chicago, with its Miracle Mile and its windy gusts.

Back to Ben … did he actually die? Or might he be living on a remote island near the site of the plane crash? There is a rich guy who is planning a resort on the island, and he takes a bunch of his investors to the island where they make a fascinating discovery.

This is a hard review to write because most everything I say, I end up stopping myself due to getting into a spoiler. I don’t have any quotes marked in the book — it’s not gorgeously written. But I loved it! The ending will have you on the edge of your seat as spoilers are revealed and we realize a lot of “small world” moments among the characters. The final reveal surprised me, but in the best of ways.

If you would like to read a feel-good book with a few Twilight Zone-like twists, give “Before I Go” a try.

I’m only giving this 4/5 because I hate the way men write women, especially in romances, but other than that, I loved this book. I finished this in 2 days (Monday and Wednesday) and it kept me hooked the whole time. Was such a sweet romance with a twist I did not see coming. Was a very fast read and would definitely recommend. Just have to get past a man writing a woman lol

So I’m going to start this by saying my initial comment is sexist, and as a female, I should do and be better. With that said, I’m honestly surprised I liked a romance novel and was shocked to see it was written by a male author. It restores my faith and beliefs that men who believe in true love and treat women with respect still exist.

I will say I didn’t expect the tie between Rachel and Abby. That threw me by surprise. I fully thought Ben had been unfaithful, but was so thankful that wasn’t the case.

I know Joel does get his closure, but I wanted to see that story unfold on paper/in writing, with Abby. We never get to experience how/when he tells her about William. I thought with all of the hype about both being damaged, that would’ve been explored more.

Also, I’m not a prude. I’ve read adult books for sure. But having Maggie (the sister) be sex-obsessed just felt awkward and forced. Yeah, I get it, Maggie wanted Abby to “kiss and tell”, but it still felt out of place.

Overall, it’s a quick read. It felt relatable for anyone who’s experienced that kind of loss and/or feelings of guilt. And let’s be honest: SPOILER: if the plane crashed and somehow did have a survivor, the time spent would’ve been minimal on that island. It wasn’t equipped for long term survival without food and all that.

I received this complimentary from Influenster and Kensington Books.

Any book that’s classified as a sad romance, I’m all over. And this book hits all the marks.

Abby Gamble’s husband died in a plane crash. She’s 34-years-old. She’s lost her infant son years ago. And now she’s a widow. She knows she needs to move on with her life, but it’s a struggle. Eventually she agrees to go on a date with Joel - the hot doctor at her gym. The two fall hard and fast. But is her husband dead? Or is he stranded on an island trying to get back to her?

Before I Go is a beautiful story that pulls on all the heartstrings. Everybody’s connected and it just makes your heart swell.

I’ll be honest I was hesitant to read a romance by a man… it’s been awhile since I have, but it’s a sweet story, that focuses more on grief and moving on and I enjoyed it!

Before I Go by Brian Charles isn’t the type of book to which I am normally drawn. It is a book about love; romantic love, family love and letting go. All the MCs have experienced loss in their lives and each storyline details these losses and each person’s journey in accepting the future.

I rated this book 3.5/5 Stars. I felt somewhat manipulated by the ending, but it was a quick, enjoyable, read overall.

I cried big ugly tears at the end of this book, and it’s now one of my all time favorite books!! I read this because Charlie Donlea told me it’s his favorite ending of a book he’s written, and as a huge fan of his thrillers, I knew I had to give it a chance, and man am I glad I did! I don’t want to say anything that will give anything away, but please just read this book everyone!!!!

I put this book off for awhile (my husband “banned” books where the husband dies due to excessive panic about his pending doom). I’m so sad I didn’t read this sooner. It’s very Nicholas Sparks but somehow…better? I couldn’t put this down towards the end and the ending was everything I could have asked for.

I received this book from Influenster and Kensington Books to read & review, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The writing and storyline reminded me of Karen Kingsbury and Nicholas Sparks. There was never a boring moment - you were always learning new things and going further into the story. I was shocked by multiple things in the ending. Great read on love and life!

I absolutely love that one of my favorite childhood memories is captured in this book. That house with the Christmas tree spanning all three stories and out the top of the roof. I too was told they had to somehow open/remove the roof to get this to work every year.

I am mixed about this book. I came into it with expectations because the author, also known as
Charlie Donlea is a 4-5 star read for me. thi s is an earlier novel and is a sweet/sad tale about living and loving when you have lost people close to you. The main character Abby, son died when he was a baby and then her husband dies in a plane crash. she eventually meet Joel and we watch him resolve his issues from the past as well. Her husband Ben has his own reckoning to do. It is a simpler story than he usually writes and it is good for what it is, but I prefer his other books

I went from devastated to thinking this was the only ending this book could have in just a few pages. I was completely surprised by the ending, and I was so happy for it. I didn’t think it was possible to resolve all the plot lines without ruining something, but while this book broke my heart, it also had the perfect ending!

Abby’s husband was in a plane crash. With the death of their infant son a decade ago, this new tragedy once again sends Abby into a deep grief. For another couple years, she tries to find closure, not knowing what happened to Ben and not knowing how to move on. That is until she meets Joel. A childhood accident has left Joel struggling to find happiness too, but he has found a unique connection with Abby. She’s understandably resistant to a new relationship even if she can’t find the words to explain to Joel. How can she abandon Ben, especially when they have been through so much together?

Ben had been wrestling with a secret and when and how to tell Abby prior to the crash too. This news had the potential to change their relationship. The accident has cut his ability to communicate all he feelings for his wife and all he still wishes to tell her. While Abby is moving on, Ben is trying to find a way back to back to her, to tell her so much that has been left unsaid.

This book starts the moment of the accident and moves forward to six months later when Abby experiences her first Thanksgiving and Christmas without her husband. Working through well meaning family intentions and the memories of Ben’s favorite holiday, she understandably struggles. Then, moving on to almost a year after the crash, we’re introduced to Joel and his driving forces in life.Though successful, he struggles with finding his worth and his responsibilities to his family. Though it takes lots of prompting and time for Abby to accept Joel’s invitations, he’s persistent and she deserves happiness..

This book was said to be for fans of Nicholas Sparks. My one experience with a Nicholas Sparks’s book was devastating so I went into this thinking the worst of each possible scenario. I was surprised by every twist in this book and the depths it explored. I loved Bens’ journal entries, and I felt so proud of Abby’s success and strength. I loved Abby and her sister’s relationship too and the struggle between despair after losing a child and being happy for another person’s pregnancy.

Moving on is a process, handled without a set timeframe. Certain people, experiences can all move that process along and it made me happy to read the outcome of this tragic story. I also love short chapters, and I love chapter headings. We need more of that! :)

I received reimbursement in exchange for my honest review. Thanks @Influenser and @KensingtonBooks!

This was a coworker recommendation so I probably would have never heard of it otherwise.

This is a book about Abby dealing with her husband dying suddenly in a plane crash. She must learn to let this loss define her or find a way to live and move on.

Our other main character, Joel, is a general surgeon who is still dealing with guilt of the part he played in his older brother death 30 years later.

I would describe this book as being about self discovery after losing a loved one. These characters must decide if the pain of losing loved ones will define the rest of their lives or if their past can motivate them to strive for a better future.

Our two main characters have a sweet romance that is kinda picture perfect like Nicholas Sparks romance books. I did wish the characters had more meaningful conversations in their scenes together to get to know each other. I thought some stuff was a little rushed. I will say this book was difference from what I expected and was pleasantly surprised by the ending.

Recomendo demais.

Enjoyable read, even if a bit repetitive. The suspense kept me intrigued. The ending was a complete surprise, but when I thought back throughout the story, I should have at least suspected a twist. Well done.
