Connie Cox and Cris Evatt, the authors of Simply Organized have teamed up once again and created a new step-by-step guide to simplifying your life in only thirty days. Organized in a day-by-day format, the book offers simple steps which take in an hour or less to cut down on clutter. Each section is followed by instructions for more in-depth simplifying each area (one's workplace, closets, vacation, or errand routines, a cluttered mind, and more), and a tip checklist is included for readers interested in "maximum simplification." Written in an inspirational style and a clear, down-to-earth format, 30 Days to a Simpler Life contains adages, anecdotes, and quotes from philosophers, designers, psychologists, financial planners, and other experts. The authors also include a guide to related books, newsletters, and websites to further assist readers in reaching their goal of simpler living.
Contemporary romance author Connie Cox was a finalist in the 2007 Golden Heart contest and sold that book, Taking Flight, to Avalon Books. When Avalon Books closed, Amazon Montlake picked up Taking Flight and offers the story in hard back, paper back and ebook. Then Connie entered a contest sponsored by Harlequin Medical Romances. This led to The Baby Who Saved Dr. Cynical and four more books with Harlequin. Then life happened. Connie went in a different direction and picked up a new pen name along with a new genre.
But true love never says never. There were still heroes and heroines flitting around in Connie's mind, destined to be together. Now, the muses have pulled Connie back to this pen name to give them all their Happy Endings
20190121 ◊ If you're curious to see if a 20+ year old book on simplicity might hold any new/useful ideas, let me save you some time: the answer is no. This book is hilariously and painfully out of date. General principles on organizing, purging, and simplicity don't really change, and may be found without having to wade through helpful hints on how to update your Rolodex or the best way to store fax machine manuals.
I love most of the ideas in this book and the way each chapter presents a new task and challenge for getting your things organized. The book is a bit wordy and dated as it was published several years ago. Even so, it is keeping me motivated to become more simplified and organized.
This book inspired me into action with lots of good ideas for getting organized. I didn't love it though. I mostly skimmed through the chapters looking for ideas that applied to my goals. I was hoping for a project idea book that listed a "hot spot" in the home for each day (like the master bath one day, the hall closet the next, under the kitchen sink the next . . . ) and then help with deciding what things need to go (like if you haven't used it since you opened it on your wedding day, you don't need it - that kind of thing). Instead it is divided into chapters like "Revise your Living Spaces", "Consider Minimalism" and "Design Simple Systems" to help organize your life in general. I think my life is already organized in general, I just want to get rid of STUFF! I was motivated by certain parts of the book though, and I have cleared out several bags of clutter. Yeah!
I would have really like this book if it were something like "15 days to a simpler life". It started off strong but about halfway through seemed like filler chapters to make the book title work. I definitely came away with some great tipes like practice living without, etc. but started to lose interest at chapters like "simplify your mind". Still, glad I read it and this is one I wouldn't mind keeping around to just check in on and brush up on occassionally.
This book totally inspired me to get rid of a lot of junk and rethink the way I shop. I still have work to do, organizing and getting rid of more stuff, but I am now way more thoughtful of spending money only when i need to, and on things that will benefit me in the long run. A couple chapters (esp. 12) were a little flakey, but overall I would definitely recommend this book.
I'm jumping around in this book, because it allows for that type of reading. I'm still trying to get my bedroom simpler. It's a process. This is a hands on book for paring down.
