Money doesn’t solve everything! It can’t buy everything, either. Even redemption.

Having read One Greek Summer and absolutely loving it, I was excited to read another book by Kate Frost.

While I was magically transported to Capri and all this wonderful island has to offer, I struggled with the play-by-play narration, the behaviour of grown women who were supposedly best friends, and the lack of respect the children had for their parents. I really wanted to like this book, but it is in a different league than One Greek Summer.

I struggled to connect with the characters and was disappointed in their choices. What should have been a fantastic holiday full of bonding time and an appreciation of Stella’s gift…..wasn’t.

Please understand that my review is heavily influenced by my moral compass, not the author’s ability to write a good book.

I was gifted this book by Kate Frost, Boldwood Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

This book was well written, but I just didn’t like any of the characters, with the exception of Edith and Matteo, who were secondary characters. I struggled to connect and empathize with the main characters and the terrible decisions they made.

~~~ I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review ~~~
An Italian Dream is the first novel by Kate Frost that I have read. Overall, it was a good escapist read. However, it did start out slow and a little redundant (a little overkill on the whole I was a teenage mom and missed out on my life thing); It did get better as the book progressed though. I love the location of this book- Capri! (I could relate since I am lucky enough to have recently returned from a trip to Italy including a day in Capri- which is why I requested to read this book). This is a story of friendship, family, loyalty, and honesty. In the end, life throws the main characters Fern and Stella (best friends) some curve balls, but they overcome the obstacles and are happier because of it all. I look forward to reading more of Frost's books taking place in Italy and Greece in the future.
I absolutely adored the island of Capri when I visited on a cruise ship excursion, so I truly felt transported back there with this wonderful story.
Fern and Stella have been best friends forever and when Stella wins some money on the lottery she decides to treat them to a holiday of a lifetime to celebrate their 40th Birthdays.
What soon becomes apparent is that Stella is hiding things, that Amber, Ferns daughter may know something about that Fern is oblivious. Even as a reader I had pieced some of the truth together before Fern.
I was made to feel rather hungry by the tantalising descriptions of Italian food. And I could really picture Capri as we are taken on day trips. Not to mention a split for a few days of differing holiday plans.
I suspect I would have gone with Stella on that one!
It's a story of two women making changes in their lives for the better and I devoured it over the course of an afternoon in the garden that was so hot that I could have been in Italy myself.
Left me with a smile and great desire to discover what stunning location Kate Frost will write about next.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have read honestly and voluntarily.
A enjoyable read from Frost that shows you are never too old to make changes in your life. I loved the way that Frost describes the setting but found the main drive of the story was just a bit too slow and obvious.
Stella has a secret: she has won the lottery. She is determined to celebrate her fortieth in style and books a villa in Capri for a girly holiday: her best friend and their daughters are going to have a lovely stay and explore a beautiful part of the world. On paper, this sounds like a brilliant way to celebrate life and friendship except, as you would expect, things don’t exactly go to plan.
I didn’t warm to Stella as a character. I found her selfish and controlling. Her actions throughout do nothing to redeem herself and I was frustrated by her putting herself first all of the time, even when she is hosting people on holiday. However, I was surprised to discover that Stella isn’t actually the main character as Frost tells the story predominantly from Fern, her best friend.
It is evident that Fern hasn’t got the best of lives: a “mother” to her husband, a “vanilla” job and the realisation that she has put her life on hold for too long. I felt sorry for Fern because she is such a wallflower and it is only a chance meeting with Edith that sets her life on a far different course. It was lovely to see Fern rediscover herself but always remain true to her principles, even when temptation rears its head.
I didn’t care much for the middle part of the book where Stella takes the daughters on the luxury boat trip. I thought it reinforced Stella’s selfish nature. On the other hand, I thought the pace wasn’t particularly energetic when Fern attends the retreat: it made me feel lethargic and I was wanting the excitement and enthusiasm that we saw from the characters at the start of the book.
The best element to this story was the setting. I felt completely transported to Capri through Frost’s writing and I loved how it was all described. It definitely made this a holiday read from your own sofa and I couldn’t help but have a yearning to visit Capri after finishing the novel.
An easy going read and, whilst I didn’t like Stella very much, I was pleased to see Fern’s transformation where, by the end of the story, she really is in charge of her own destiny.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A weekend spa treat....
An artists' retreat....
Secrets to be revealed....
Possible romance concealed....
Family drama ...
At last, karma!!
Living the Italian dream....
Is everything as it would seem?
Best friends don't have secrets, do they?
Well, that's true for some, they say.
For Fern and Stella, lifelong friends
Is this a new start or will it be the end?
A luxury stay for a fortnight in Capri seems a great idea
Especially as her treat, Stella makes it clear.
A girls together getaway to help celebrate
Both their fortieth birthdays and a twist of fate.
However, family relationships are strained and secrets remain
Can they break the silence and make the truth plain?
Some shocking revelations, new decisions, too
A great read for me and for you!
A story of friendships, old and new,
Relationships, expectations and dreams coming true.
With great characters, mystery and angst in good measure
A story where dreams are something to treasure.
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review
This one, like the last one, has weird grammar because the author is British but I already downloaded it before I finished the last book and discovered that so I read it anyway. Anywho decent book, good plot and it’s in Italy
This is hands down the worst book I ever read. I was holding on for it to get better and by the time that I realized “no this is just a really bad book” I was already 45% done and I’ll be darned if I don’t at least get the joy of adding this to my 2023 challenge.
All I have to say is this is the most dry book ever. If Fern (yes even the name is boring) has one hater it is me. If Fern has no haters I am dead.
You’re telling me Ferns best friend slept with her husband and they just make up and be friends? Nah. I need murder or something.
Kate Frost's books are a joy to read! Her vivid descriptions and true-to-life characters take you to exotic destinations, all through the pages of a book. From the sandy beaches and luxury villas of Capri to the fresh mountain air of Tuscany, Kate has a talent for making you feel as though you are really there, tasting the delicious meals and cool, sparkling wine.
There are two protagonists in this book, Stella and Fern, both very different yet with similar vulnerabilities. When Stella wins the lottery, she takes best friend Fern, and their two daughters, on a luxury trip to the Italian island of Capri. But as the story unfolds, secrets are revealed and their friendship is at risk.
I loved Fern, and Edith was a wonderful character who brought charm and warmth to the story. I found Stella harder to like, especially after certain revelations, but the art retreat, the villa with its pool, the Italian playboys' luxury yacht, were a great distraction!
Beautifully written, with well-thought out storylines, and a descriptive narrative that will leave you breathless. This series of books by Kate Frost are pure escapism, and in these times of uncertainty they are a wonderful way to leave the real world behind for a while. Highly recommend.
Allow Kate to whisk you away to the sunny climes of Capri...
The book is beautifully written and so visually descriptive from the glorious sounding resort to the delicious dishes on offer. Holiday anyone?
The storyline sucked me in from the very first page, a lottery win, an all expenses paid holiday, and then came the secrets!
A highly enjoyable, feel good read that's the perfect summer escapism read.
Many thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for my tour spot.
What a fabulous setting for a book and so well described that by the end I felt as if I knew my way around Capri. Of course, that now means another location to add to my bucket list.
I loved the two main characters and their shared history. Stella, it seems has a secret that she hasn't shared with anyone yet there is a second secret that threatens their friendship. A beautiful story of friendship and the power of women. This book will go on my favourites list.
I've really been enjoying books by this author. The settings are always fantastic, and provide some awesome escapism. But I also appreciate the actual storyline, and how each book focuses on real-life issues that women deal with, and the struggles we go through. Sure, there's often a bit of all-too-convenient romance, but in the end, I appreciate that these men (and other people the women meet) often help the main characters find their way to their own happiness (instead of the man himself being the answer). The endings often feel so perfect. Oh, and I adore the cover art for all of these books - definitely a big draw! I'll be reading more of these books.
An ok beach read, written in a descriptive style which really transported me to Capri. Lots of mention of blue skies, sparkling seas and lemons - which I guess feature heavily in Capri but became a bit boring after a while.
I found it to be quite repetitive in general (yes, we get it, they’re turning 40 and things have changed since they were 18) and somewhat hyperbole and cliche heavy (did I mention the lemons?) None of the characters were particularly likeable other than a couple of secondary characters who we didn’t get to see enough of really.
Almost DNFed it at one point so found myself skimming pages a little to get through yet another bout or reminiscing about lost youth.
The ending was nice, if somewhat predictable.
Won’t rush to read more books by this author.
So detailed and drawn out
Long winded, meticulous writing. Seemed more like a dear diary every single thing that happened today entry than a novel. Did a lot of fast forwarding and don't think I missed much.
I really liked this book by the end, It starts out slow, but as the story progresses it captures you and you will have a hard time putting it down. Stella and Fern are best friends. Stella just won the lottery and only tells her daughter and Fern and wants them to go on a girls trip to the Isle of Capri in Italy. She gets a very expensive villa for two weeks. Everyone is overwhelmed by the villa, but Fern is not enjoying all the things Stella plans, she just want sot be left alone in the quiet that surrounds them, to be able to explore on her own. When the girls (age's 18 & 21) men four Italian young men who invite the whole group to cruise with them in a multi-million-dollar yacht for 4/5 days, after meeting the young man in charge, agrees to go. Stella and the girls want to go and Fern does not, she just wants to be alone, but remembers that an older lady she met on the boat trip to Capri is going to an art-retreat and invites her to come and stay in the extra room she had booked for her friend, who was unable to come. After meeting Mateo, the man who runs the retreat, all is well when she agrees to go to the retreat while the others are on the yacht. Stella and the girls, love living the lifestyle of the rich and famous and all that goes with it. Fern loves being at the retreat and quiet and peace she craves, and begins to paint again. Meanwhile, although married, falls in love with Mateo, who is everything her husband is not, Fern also finds that she can really open up to her elderly friend, Edith and a rich friendship develops. After they all return, things begin to fall apart with many hurt feelings, lots of crying and four very angry women who react in different ways. With anger all around, Stella who is turning forty and Fern who will also forty in a few months, are supposed to have a big celebration on Stella's actual B-day. Too top-it-off the rest of their families arrive for the big event, so the women put on a happy face, but everyone feels the anger and it all falls apart. Fern, having her confidence rebuilt, tells her cheating husband of 20 years that she wants a divorce and all the other people walk on eggshells for the rest of the time. Stella & Fern stop talking, but as time goes on, Stella take the first step in repairing the friendship.
Kate Frost’s An Italian Dream is the perfect summertime escape!
Fern Chambers and Stella Shaw have been best friends since childhood. The two of them have been friends through good times and bad and innumerable highs and lows. With their fortieth birthdays fast approaching, Fern and Stella find themselves at a crossroads. Stella is burdened by a secret that is weighing heavily on her shoulders while Fern’s idyllic home life is not as perfect as it seems. A holiday to Capri is the perfect excuse for the two friends to reconnect, let their hair down and celebrate in style. However, under the sizzling Italian sun, past secrets come to light that could end up driving these two best friends apart…forever!
Fern and Stella thought they would spend this holiday topping up their tans and drinking cocktails by the sea, but in beautiful Capri, the two women find themselves forced to look deep inside themselves, look at their lives and wonder whether they are on the right path. Is this trajectory making them happy? Or will they find the courage to make changes in their lives and finally be the ones in charge of their own destinies?
As old friendships are strengthened, new ones are formed and love is discovered, will this Italian vacation turn out to be just what Fern and Stella have been looking for for so long? Or will their Italian idyll turn into a complete nightmare?
Kate Frost’s An Italian Dream is like an all expenses paid trip to beautiful Capri without all the hassle of airport queues, lost luggage and staff shortages. A wonderfully affecting and deliciously readable tale of friendship, sisterhood and the ties that bind sprinkled with plenty of sunshine, humour and romance, An Italian Dream is a gorgeous page-turner that made me laugh and cry that is perfect for fans of Cathy Kelly and Milly Johnson.
Uplifting, emotional and compelling, Kate Frost’s enjoyable new novel An Italian Dream should be on every reader’s must-buy list this summer.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Stella and Fern have been best friends since they were in grade school. Each got pregnant in her late teens and married in haste. Fern's twins daughters are now 21, while Stella's daughter Chloe is 18 and her son Jacob, child of her second marriage is 13. And Stella has just won the Lottery. She is keeping the real amount of her windfall a secret, even from Fern, but she is determined to help her friend celebrate a wonderful fortieth birthday with a dream trip to Capri for the two of them and their daughters. Both women are restless and dissatisfied with how their lives have been going, Stella twice-divorced and dating, Fern still married to her twins father but increasingly unhappy.Years of keeping house and raising the girls while her husband continues to go out with the boys and often come home drunk, is wearing on her. She feels unloved, una ppreciated and taken for granted and she blames herself. As usual, Frost paints a sumptuous word picture of her setting, the Isle of Capri in spring. My issues with this novel revolve around in sufficiently explained motivation, especially that of Stella, who has allowed herself to sleep with Fern's horn dog of a husband. No real justification for this is really offered and, for me, at least, "I was wrong" doesn't cut it. The fact that Fern did work through her heartbreak, divorce the horn dog and begin a beautiful farmhouse B&B in the Tuscan countryside is both marvelous and just the happy ending for her I needed. The fact that she and Stella are still uneasy friends and that Stella (spoiler alert) seems to have soron off men by the end of the novel was not as satisfying somehow.
An Italian Dream by Kate Frost was the first novel I’ve read by this author, and I was pleasantly surprised by how beautifully she brought the story — and the setting — to life. I felt magically transported to the island of Capri and all it had to offer. It was the perfect escape read. The way Kate Frost described each day trip, each meal, and every breathtaking view made me feel like I was right there on the island. It truly sounded dreamy.
The story follows Fern, a quiet, selfless woman who’s spent years putting everyone else first. She became a mother as a teenager and has lived much of her adult life as a “wallflower,” missing out on the adventures she once dreamed of. Her best friend Stella, carefree and full of life, wins the lottery and decides to treat Fern and their daughters to a luxurious trip to Capri. What’s meant to be a vacation quickly becomes a journey of self-discovery for both women.
I really felt for Fern. Her marriage is stagnant—she’s more of a caretaker than a wife—and her job is uninspiring. She’s been stuck in the same place for too long, afraid to chase what she really wants. Meanwhile, Stella is hiding a big secret of her own, one that adds emotional depth to the story. Along the way, Fern meets Edith, a secondary character who helps her see her life and her future in a completely new light.
This book is about rediscovering your sense of self and self-worth, about finding happiness, and learning to take risks—even when it’s scary. It’s warm, uplifting, and full of heart. An Italian Dream reminded me that it’s never too late to make changes, to follow your dreams, and to live life on your own terms.
Escape to beautiful Italy in Kate Frost’s charming An Italian Dream.
This story is like a vacation in a book. I just loved all the descriptions of Capri: the gorgeous scenery, the fabulous food. I couldn’t get enough of it. Similar to Kate’s previous book One Greek Summer, she will have you believing you can feel the Mediterranean breeze in your hair.
I liked both the main characters in this book though Fern really stood out for me. Although she’s lost a bit of herself over the years, she is kind, a great mom, and stuck to her values. I really liked that this book featured characters entering their forties. I wish there were more books featuring characters in midlife. Secondary character Edith is also terrific. We should all be so lucky to have an Edith in our life.
I would say this one is a breezy read. Although some secrets are revealed and there is a bit of drama, nothing too traumatising happens. You can easily gobble this one up in a sitting. Romance wise there is enough steam to make things believable but most of the action is behind closed doors.
If you are looking for a beach read that will transport you away to somewhere more exotic, give this one a try.
This year, Kate Frost has taken me to a Greek island, and now in this her latest novel, I find myself transported to the stunning island of Capri, off the Italian coast.
Kate pens the most wonderful escapist stories with distinctive atmospheric settings, secrets, tears, laughter and love.
An Italian Dream is no different; it is a captivating novel about friendship, self-discovery and what truly makes you happy. So should you stick to your present predicament or dip your toe into the tranquil waters of a different path to see where it leads?
When Stella invited best friend Fern on a luxury holiday to Capri to celebrate their fortieth birthdays after winning a substantial amount on the lottery, neither of them could have foreseen how life-changing the trip would become for them both.
Close friends since school, Stella has been holding onto a secret that threatens to turn Fern’s life as she knows it upside down.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the isle of Capri, the author has peppered the story with an authentic Italian flavour; descriptions of the setting, the food and the wine make you feel as if you are there sampling them with the characters.
The narrative itself is an exploration of family, friendship and making the most of life, not settling for second best. Fern’s interactions with daughter Amber add another twist to the portrayal of relationships , including that of Fern’s husband Paul.
Fern and Stella couldn’t be more different and this dynamic to their friendship is a key element to the success of the storyline. Add the wonderful Edith and Matteo into the mix and you have the perfect cast for this summer read!
With thanks to the author, Rachel at Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to participate in the tour.
I absolutely loved the last Kate Frost book I read (One Greek Summer), and this next one definitely did not disappoint.
The story hooked me in from the very beginning and it makes the perfect holiday read. I especially loved the complexity of her characters. They weren’t likeable and I suppose they weren’t meant to be. My only wish is that Stella had got a bit more karmic retribution or had learned something at the end. Being 40 and acting like a 19 year old was so jarring to read.
I really enjoyed the build-up to the reveals of the various secrets. To be honest, I thought the reveal about Stella’s real lottery winnings was somewhat predictable, as planning to retire on just £1m makes no sense - this I found somewhat frustrating as I read on. But the one about Stella and Fern’s husband really shocked me.
I loved all the various side characters and how each character got to have their own little story in the middle. Random, I also loved all of the detailed descriptions of food. They made me so hungry lol.
Don’t go expecting Shakespeare, but I found this one to be a fab beach read. Would recommend.
I wasn't very impressed with this book.
The island of Capri was beautifully described & sounded gorgeous.
I admit this type of book is not my thing, as it is about relationships. So to me it was a bit boring & I thought could have been a shorter storyline, as it did tend to go over the same things again & again.
Main story is about Fern & Stella, who have been friends since childhood. Their 40th birthdays are approaching & both are taking stock of their lives. Neither are really completely happy with their lot. So Stella suggests they have a holiday in Capri to celebrate. Fern has an husband Paul & twin grown up daughters at uni, Amber & Ruby.
Stella is twice divorced with a grown up daughter at uni, Chloe & a teenage son Jacob.
So Stella,Chloe,Fern & Amber, jet off to Capri for a few weeks of sun & fun.
They all have their adventures whilst there, but Fern & Stella are constantly thinking about their lives, past, present & future.
They all get there in the end.
If you like delving into other people's relationships, then this is the book for you. But not for me.
Listened on borrowbox
Best friends Stella and Fern decide their turning 40 and need an escape to the sun - So they jet set to Capril. Their lives couldn't be any more different and that leaves tensions rising. Although Stella also has a huge secret that clouds her everyday. Will she be able to tell Fern ? And will it be the making of breaking of their friendship.
I was looking on borrowbox for my next read and the cover drew me in instantly. This is unusual for me because I prefer illustrative covers normally but who can resist that blue sea.
The book is a page turner. You just want to immerse yourself more and more into their holiday of a lifetime. Each page takes you further into their lives and secrets.
However I did find the change between Stella and Fern to be very quick and their narrative sounded the same. It took me a few sentences to realise who was speaking and then they'd change. This was mainly at the beginning.
What a wonderful story set in a gorgeous destination, full of sunshine, cocktails and food with the added addition of wonderful friendships both old and new.
I loved meeting Stella & Fern and learning about their friendship and looking back over the past 20 years as they both head towards their 40th birthdays. Fern fell pregnant with her twins at just 18 years old and so her life took a very unexpected turn, whilst her best friend although she fell pregnant young has lived a very different life.
I love books by Kate Frost, she always takes us to beautiful destinations that make you feel as if you are really there and soaking in the atmosphere alongside the wonderful characters that she creates.
A truly wonderful summer read, that is perfect for a lazy day in the sun to make you want to reach for your cocktail glass and soak up the summer rays.
