Colorful and detailed illustrations, created with pen and ink, watercolor, and digital tools, make this graphic novel, part of the "I Like to Read" series, especially engaging for youngsters. The plot concerns two would-be superheroes, Electro-Elephant and Hypno-Hippo, both shown wearing costumes with a large number seven emblazoned on the front, as they embark on heroic deeds. But as they prepare to introduce readers to the other members of their team, Hungry Kitty and her four birds, they run into a bit of a problem. It seems that Hungry Kitty has lived up to her name, and the four birds have been eaten. The elephant and hippo try to recruit more members for their superhero team, but the same thing happens. Observant readers will notice that the numbers on their shirts keep changing, going to six and then five and then four. It takes some quick thinking to distract Hungry Kitty during that last iteration, but the superheroes prevail. Now that Hungry Kitty's hunger has been satisfied, maybe, just maybe they can get back to their original purpose and solve some crimes. Youngsters will gain confidence in their reading skills while perusing this book, and they will also want to revisit it to look more carefully at the pictures. The fact that silliness abounds here adds to the book's appeal.

They start as seven superheroes: Electro Elephant who can charge your cell phone, Hypno-Hippo who can put bad guys to sleep, Hungry Kitty who is always very hungry and her four brave birds! But wait, the birds are gone. They’ve been eaten by Hungry Kitty. So the three remaining heroes advertise for new members. Polka Don shows up but they turn his polka dots down. Instead, they recruit the Three Flying Fish! That makes 6 instead of 7, so they need new shirts. By the time they get them, the fish have disappeared … the latest meal for Hungry Kitty. And then, of course, the Mighty Milk Box Twins. Surely now they can get T-shirts … oops. So guess who shows up again?

Plenty of silly, plenty of fun.

Electro elephant can charge your phone with his trunk. Hypno-Hippo can put bad guys to sleep. And Hungry kitty . . . um, Hungry kitty ate the rest of the Super Duper Seven, now they need to recruit new members of the Super Duper Seven!

"Meet the Super Duper Seven" is another I like to Read Comic - Told through dialogue in graphic comic format, it's a little all over the place, but that's part of the humor. The illustrations are clever, I love the mouse who makes stuff out of string.

3 superhero friends are trying to recruit more members to their group, but one of them keeps eating the new (small) recruits. Meanwhile, they dismiss an eager volunteer repeatedly--but he comes up with his own plan.

I think I saw is recommended on a "funny" book list, and I did laugh a time or two. I think it bothered me a bit that it was supposed to be funny that a thief kept stealing and one hero kept making him sleep.

This book was really cute! I think it was so funny. And I almost didn't give it a chance, but I can imagine patrons of mine that would get a kick out of it. Once it's been out a bit longer (give other libraries more time to purchase it), I'd like to use it for my K-3 book club!

I checked this book out after it came highly recommended by Betsy Bird. My eight year old found it hilarious, but my 5 year old cried at the surprising demise of several characters. So, a great book for some and not the best choice for a more sensitive reader.

A deeply silly and kind of dark beginning comic book about a superhero team that can't retain members because Hungry Cat keeps eating them. I love that there are different kinds of early readers now, ones with humor, diversity, comic styles etc.

How can you be the Super Duper Seven when one of your members continuously eats members? If you know pretweens or tweens who like dark humor, give them this graphic novel.
