This one is a 3.5 for me, and I know anyone interested in Egypt would love it. Many fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students are fascinated by Egypt, and they'd enjoy lifting the many flaps--some even have more flaps beneath the top flaps--to learn all sorts of interesting facts about the ancient Egyptian and their burial practices. This well-designed book features pages about Egyptologists, the pyramids, religious practices, mummies, gods and goddesses, life on the Nile, daily life. There's even information about crocodiles, games, sports, and fashion provided so that readers realize that the pyramids and pharaohs weren't the only part of this ancient land. Still, several of the flaps are in the form of a pyramid, which is appropriate for the subject area. The use of vibrant colors, vivid oranges and reds, make the pages almost seem to pulse with warmth and life. I'm a sucker for books like these and could browse them for hours. Any teacher planning a unit on Egypt will want to add this one to the classroom collection. It's worth noting that while Howard Carter, who uncovered King Tut's tomb, is mentioned, so are other archeologists and Egyptologists. It might have been important to point out that many of Egypt's treasures were removed by Westerners, a wrong that Egyptians today are trying to rectify. It's also worth being reminded that Egypt wasn't the only place where pyramids were built. Honestly, even someone who knows a lot about this topic can learn something new from the book.
This book is full of cool facts about Ancient Egypt! The first section talks about archeology and how ancient tombs and artifacts have been discovered. You have to lift the flaps to look underground, into the maps, or within the archeologist's tent.
There are also sections all about the pyramids, mummies, the Nile, the daily life, and the religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. I didn't really care about the list of their all gods and goddesses, but I enjoyed all the other sections very much.
The artwork is really bright and colorful, and I loved the lift-the-flap designs of this book. Sometimes you lift a flap and see another flap underneath! It's like a mystery within another mystery, and it's so much fun to discover each new thing.

The engineering alone would merit five stars, but the illustrations are also gorgeous, and I enjoyed the information presented (some of which I didn't know!).
