A little girl narrates her attempt to catch a witch in this rhyming board book for Halloween, describing the many traps she has laid out - a trampoline, a lemonade stand, and a butterfly net - in her campaign. Her hope is to catch a ride on the witch's broom, and fetch a twinkly star from the night sky. Although the witch cleverly evades all the traps, she nevertheless grants the little girl's wish, fetching her a star herself...

Published earlier this year (2021), My First How to Catch a Witch looks to be the third seasonal board book from author Alice Walstead and illustrators Joel and Ashley Selby. The story itself is engaging, and the text in rhyme, although occasionally a little awkward, makes for a fun read-aloud for younger children, at whom this title is aimed. The artwork is colorful and cute, and adds to the story, showing the green-faced witch as she successfully navigates the traps described in the little girl's text. All in all, a sweet little Halloween board book, one I would recommend to parents and librarians looking for new seasonal titles for the youngest children.

Delightful story for toddlers and preschoolers. The young girl really wants to catch a witch so she can ride her broom and get a twinkle star. Readers see her set several traps without success. They also see the witch flying through the story. In the end, the witch leaves a sweet note and the twinkle star for her. Easy to follow text for young readers and brightly colored illustrations with plenty of details to study.

This is a children's book about how a group of kids goes out to trick or treat, but realizes there are many ghouls, ghosts, and other creatures out. Come to find out a witch has put on a dance party. The only issue is more and more monsters are showing up. The kids try to capture her but the witch is too clever. At the end of the story the witch opens a portal and all the ghouls, ghosts, goblins, and zombies are gone!

This book was ok. Definitely not as good as the ones by Adam Wallace. I actually thought this was one of his books when I got it from the digital library so I’m glad I didn’t accidentally buy it because this one isn’t a favorite. The rhyming didn’t seem to flow quite right and it just wasn’t as interesting as the ones by Adam Wallace. It was an ok read but definitely not something I plan on buying anytime soon.

This was an adorable board book! I love the creativity of the young girl trying to catch a witch and - I don’t want to spoil the ending - but the generosity of the kind little witch. A great Halloween read for youngsters!

Cute graphics, but story did not flow/rhyme like the other toddler books so that’s why I gave 3 stars.

Cute and colorful seasonal read that would make a nice not-too-spooky story for the Halloween season.
