One princess. Two realms. And a reckless choice that could destroy kingdoms...

Rose Valrois has escaped the sorcerous red priests and returned to the castle beside the enchanted Darkwood, but her troubles are far from over. Her stepsister, Princess Neeve, is more secretive than ever, and as war threatens, Rose's mother pushes her toward a political alliance, even as her heart is torn between a heroic prince and the Dark Elf guardian of the forest.

But when Neeve makes a terrible choice, the fate of two kingdoms hangs in the balance. Rose must risk her freedom, her world, and even her heart to save her sister. Can she bear to make that sacrifice? Does she even have the choice?

Well this series went from a 3 star read in the first book.

To a five star read in this one very excited to see what's going to happen next.

So Rose makes it back to the castle and is slowly regaining her strength, but her problems are far from over. It seems the King and Queen her mother and step father have decided to find Rose a husband, and Rose is far from happy with the prospects, infact she has plans of her own that she is keeping to herself until fate up ends everything, and everyone's plans, to a place no one could have seen coming.

I really enjoyed the plot twists in this one, it wasn't obvious or predictable I loved it.

Happy Reading 📚📙📚📚📙📗📘📘📒📓📗📗📖📙📚📘📕📒📚📓

Honestly this series is getting better and better, more events unfolding so it’s not boring at all! we finally got a confession between our love interests so yayyyyy!!! And my gut is telling me that Rose’s mother is aware of her daughter having powers but kept it a secret, and I might have an inkling as to who Rose’s father might be, but for now all is just theories but I love this ❤️ Off to Book 3 we goooooooo

Possible spoilers. I still have so many questions, mainly about Rose’s magic. Where did it come from? Why did it take so long to manifest? I have some theories, mainly revolving around a red priest being Rose’s father, and that’s where her magic come from. I also think the “accident” with her pinky finger has something to do with how her magic was suppressed and why she gets sick every year. This book was a but unexciting, but I’m really hoping the last one will be more exciting and also give me the answers I need. I’m also not feeling the romance between Rose and Thorne. There doesn’t seem to be much of a spark. It feels like Rise just pines after him and his admission that he loves her back didn’t give me the feels like it should. Hopefully that changes in the last book too.

Favorite line: “‘You are a princess,’ Neeve said softly to me. ‘Take this fate and make it your own.’”

For greatest enjoyment and understanding, Book 1 (Heart of the Forest) and Book 2 (White as Frost) should be read first, then Book 3 (this book), and finally, Book 4 (Red as Flame) when it is published. The complete series should be binge-read to keep the characters, worlds, and relationships straight, and to understand the characters' motivations. It's been several months since I read White as Frost and it took a while to catch up with the story. The relationship tension among Rose, Neeve, Thorne, and Kian becomes even more strained as other suitors would like to make an alliance with the King of Raine, who is considering where his daughters should be used for maximum political effect, possibly with the Nightshade Lord. Rose and Neeve suffer strained relations that oscillate among anger, jealousy, affection, and misunderstandings. The best-laid plans of all the parties are disrupted by Fate. There are numerous unexpected plot twists to keep the suspense and interest high.
The writing is very poetically descriptive of the wonders of both the earthly realm and Elfhame, the Dark Elf realm, with many colorful or evocative similes and metaphors. The descriptions of food made me hungry. For these reasons, the reading pace should be slow enough to fully appreciate the imagery so skilfully crafted.

Rose returns home with her life barely due to the “Fire Priests” that attempted to take her life and all those with her. The Prince has decided he wants Neeve and actually attempts to propose, which the King puts a halt to. The harvest is upon them and the elves are returning home when Neeve and the Prince make a dash for the portal and enter it. Thorne and Rose attempt to get back to retrieve Neeve. Rose ends up almost being mated with the Dark Lord, Neeve wants to marry her Prince, yet she has a devastating blood disorder that does not allow her to come back to the human world Thorne brings Rose home, things go from bad to worse to good and Rose and Thorne declare their feelings to each other. When those darn Fire Priest are deciding to make an appearance.

Every book just gets better and better!! So looking forward to book 3!!

Neeve the Princess of Raine has everything, but her heart desires she lives in her mother's land, the land of the dark elves, Elfhame but this is forbidden to her as she is the anchor which holds the door between the two kingdoms open. Rose returns home with her life barely due to the “Fire Priests” that attempted to take her life and all those with her. The Prince has decided he wants Neeve and actually attempts to propose, which the King puts a halt to. I also loved listening to the Audiobook. It has been read by Amy Landon and she has an amazing voice. The way she delivered each and every voice in a different tone is absolutely fantastic. I really enjoyed both reading it and hearing it. 😊🙏💫

Neeve the Princess of Raine has everything, but her heart desires she lives in her mother's land, the land of the dark elves, Elfhame but this is forbidden to her as she is the anchor which holds the door between the two kingdoms open. If she were ever to cross over the door would close bringing ruin to both realms. On the other hand her step sister Rose feels she has nothing and belongs nowhere and she always differs to her sister's wishes as she feels quite powerless being without magic. However when Neeve takes a drastic decision which could endanger both realms, it is Rose who at the cost to her own life and her precious freedom comes to the rescue. However can she a mere mortal save those she cares for namely, Neeve and Rian, the Prince of Fiordland and Thorn the dark elf she herself loves? The oracles proclaim that she is the only one with the fate of both Kingdoms in her hands but Rose cannot believe this, what difference can she make? And with both the Athraig and the Priests of Parnesia setting their sights on Raine she is adamant she would do anything to save everyone if possible. This book was a real pleasure to read, chock full of magic and beautiful descriptions of both the Darkwood and Erynvorn, both filled with beauty as well as danger, as well as love and loyalty between the four young friends that I found myself reading right through the night till I finished the book which I really did not wish to end. I now find myself waiting in anticipation for the 3rd and final book in this awesome trilogy whereby Rose has so much on her plate and is totally alone to face the dangers and save everyone in the process.

I was so excited to get this book after having listened to the first book. I came to love the characters and couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The characters have grown up but are still the same ones I loved from the first book. The author did a great job with the story and kept me wanting more. The narrator did a wonderful job with the voices and giving each character their own.

I loved that Rose is the heroine. She isn't perfect and has her own issues but she will do anything for those she loves. Neeve and her relationship may have been rocky but they care so deeply for each other. I just can't get over how much I love this world and these characters and how badly I want book 3 now! Love these books.

5/5

Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

It just keeps getting better. I loved Heart of the Forest (the series prequel) and White as Frost but somehow Anthea Sharp improved things ever more with Rose Valrois return in Black as Night, the third book though technically Book 2 (discounting the prequel) in her The Darkwood Trilogy. This is the epitome of fantasy fairytale romance, a perfectly told tale of dark elves, mystery, magic, romance, intrigue, dangerous secrets and adventure. It’s the promised weaving of elements of Snow White & Rose Red, done in a superbly imaginative and totally fun. Easy to highly recommend is, quite frankly, and understatement.

I enjoyed the second instalment of this trilogy in some ways more and in some ways less than the first. I enjoyed the development of the story, the rich world building and the characters arcs. I still didn’t enjoy the romantic ‘tension’ in some of the characters, it felt awkward and forced to me - the miscommunication/misunderstanding tropes have a limited shelf life for me and this one feels particularly weak. Other than that though I did really enjoy spending time in this world with these characters and look forward to the final part.

The perfect escape, enthralling and captivating

I love this second installment of the story of Rose and Neeve. The story is great, the characters well developed, the thoughts and feelings of Rose can be felt and the dialogues are good. This is in all ways a great story excellently told. I can't wait for the last installment.

I received this book for free from the author, but this is an independent and voluntary review. I just can't help being a fan of Anthea's fantasy writing.

Another beautiful story about sisters, complicated relationships, and sticking together despite your differences.

Rose is an amazing heroine. Compelling, brave, but not flawless. I can't wait for Red as Flame.

Im happy that B1 - even if I disliked the heroine - worldbuilding made me continue the series!!! This book is much much better that the first. I only got annoyed one or two times with grown up Rose and she is much matured in her thinking. All other characters and the world building is still awsome! I cant wait to have book 3 in my hand with an expectation that the raiting stars are growing!!!

I like this

This is pg rated story, but it’s interesting. I love no swearing I get tired of books that use the F word instead of vocabulary. This is a cute version of a fairy tale.

So enticing

Yet another wait for the next book. I was so enthralled at the new adventure of Rose and the Black Elves, and it had to end at an important time for her. Why does it have to end at a trilogy? Would so love to see another set of books on Elfhame and the adventures in Raine.

Miscommunication and poor decision making led to Rose being the center of a lot of trouble. Betrothal, marriage and hunted are all on the edge of Roses reality.

The greatest thing about this series is how you get to grow up with the characters.

From book one to now you have been with these girls since they first met. You’ve been there as they have found their place and battled their insecurities and doubts. You’ve fallen in love as they have. You’re heart has broken with them and you’ve been on the edge of your seat as they battle.

I love this series and love all the twists and characters. I can’t wait to see where Rose goes next!!

oh i love this series, and it’s so underrated ?? why have i not seen any talk of this, no pinterest fanart, nothing! i’m so excited to be on the third book and we finally got some romance!!!
Neeve and Kian are complete opposite but so adorable, i love the way they are with eachother, it’s like black cat and golden retriever combo, grumpy sunshine, they’re cute!
this whole love square? was so confusing tbh, i was certain other people were in love with eachother for a while but MY FOLKS POPPED OFF! the couples are coupling, the bonds are bonding.
Rose and Thone!! ahhh i knew it and i LOVE it.

“I love you.” ( mouth dropped, wasnt expecting her to drop this one )

“He took me by the arms, pulled me to him, and pressed his mouth to mine in a fervent kiss. Stars flew through me as our lips met. My hands went to his shoulders, and I gripped him fiercely in return. We were flying between the worlds together—nothing but sweetness and sparks and two souls soaring through the dark.”

OH PERIODDD! stood up and applauded, standing ovation!

“I have loved you since the moment I first saw you in the Darkwood. But I always thought Neeve held your heart. It’s only recently that I’ve let myself hope that, maybe, there was a place there for me.”
He smiled crookedly, and I let my hand drop.
“It has always been you,” he said simply. “Neeve is my charge, and my friend. But your joy and determination have been the sun to my moon, ever since you stormed into the Darkwood and upended everything I thought I knew.”

“It’s my life. My choice. And I choose you. If you’ll have me.”
He lifted his hand to cup my cheek, and the tenderness in his expression made me dizzy.
“If this is truly what you want,” he said softly, “then yes. A thousand times over. But what about when I must cross between the worlds? What of the winters? I fear I would be a poor mate, leaving you so much alone.”

“Hurry back,” I murmured, as I made myself let him go.
“I will.” He regarded me solemnly, the flecks of light in his eyes as bright as polished gold. “Stay safe, melethel. My love.”

the smile i had on my face. “my love” does it ever time!

this one was 10/10, i loved the world building in Elfhame, and the character developments, and the bonding with relationships. my girl Rose got that weird power surge thing going on? idk but i love this

Ok so, the series does progress a lot more in the second book. We finally get some action going on. I’m sorry but I still can’t stand Rose. I love Neeve, Kian, and Thorne enough to remain invested in the storyline. But Rose is truly a thorn in my side. Her incessant whining and petulant attitude is tiresome. If you’ve heard the sound bite “Am I the drama?” Rose definitely is! She’s pretty dense about everything going on in her life because of her obsession with Thorne. I mean seriously, she basically accosted him while he was unconscious. Not cool especially since she crushes on any guy that so much as looked her way.

Overall the story is good and flows well. I liked it much better than the first book. The world building is great and I’m glad to have experienced the journey into Elfham. I look forward to the next book.

I read this series pretty much immediately all the way through, so this review is just going to be a copy-paste for each book.

Honestly, I can't hype this enough. It's YA, for sure and certain, and the first book starts with the FMC quite young (12-13) which threw me off, until I started ignoring her age completely. She ages up appropriately throughout the series as it continues, ending at a reasonable, marriageable age.

The series is well written and totally captured my young self's dreams of magic, enchanted woods and enchanted creatures. The twists are adequately twisty, if a bit predictable. The hint of a fairytale rewrite is present, but doesn't hit you over the head in an unoriginal way, and is subtle enough that it may take you some time to notice it. The happily ever afters land in the best way, with each of the characters coming together to support each other in desperately heartwarming ways. The sisters find their loves. Each person's authentic self is known, loved (sometimes tolerated- as sisters are wont to do), and celebrated. The found-family trope is STRONG.

My biggest complaint was simply that the world building regarding the zealots was tragically underdeveloped. I wanted to know so much more than I was given, and regrettably, felt like they deserved for how large a role they play...

Book two is much better than the first one. I’m glad that I continued in the series. The characters have grown up so much throughout the series. This book still pulls are characters from one disaster to another which range from encounters with mythical creatures, battles within, and misunderstandings. Throw in the arranged marriage looming over one or both of our girls and it’s a recipe for a good read. This book had more direction and build up to the climax of the storyline. Overall the story was more entertaining and featured stronger writing. Although sometimes the characters are a little too clueless for them to be so smart. The ending of the book left the readers with anticipation for the next book.

The sisters are clearly destined to cause mayhem. At least they know what they want and will do what they must to get it – and to keep each other safe.

A thrilling adventure of magic, love, and travelling between worlds – and of sisterhood, of course.

So much became obvious that was a bit opaque in the previous book once certain events take place. But worse is still to come…

I had a problem with the italics as it messes with my eyes and head, making it difficult to read and enjoy the book. Authors and publishers: please consider the neurodivergent when making decisions about italics so books are accessible to all.

Can’t wait to read the next book!

Rose and Neeve's story continues in this book. The end of book one was exciting and I was hoping that it would immediately pick up and continue here. That was not the case. Until part three of this book The only thing that's really focused on is the arranged marriages for the girls who in this book are around 17 years old. Neeve stows away into elfhame and Rose follows to retrieve her. In Elfhame Rose finally discovers her magical power. I was frustrated about Rose and Thorne's "love" for one another that they do not acknowledge or Express in the final chapters they finally acknowledge it and then the Red priest enter the story again. Good book worth reading.

3.5 stars. I liked this book much better than the first one and I do have to say I’m a bit attached to this story to see where it progresses. Similar feelings with the last one but this one was much better paced and interesting as we get to see the world unfold a bit more. The main love interest aka Thorne isn’t really a three dimensional character to me. I see no charm in him and his dialogue is actually quite flat so I don’t really get the appeal, but again this is for “young adults” aka 13 year olds so perhaps when I was 13 I would have loved this way more!

My rating system:
5 stars - Absolutely loved it! I would definitely read again anytime!
4 stars - Really liked it! Will most likely read again sometime.
3 stars - Liked it. Glad I read it but probably won't read again.
2 stars - Didn't like it. Glad I'm done with the book and I'll never read it again.
1 star - Very rare rating. Absolutely hated the book. Will never read again and I'll probably burn any copies I come across.

I didn't really like the first book but I kept reading the series because I saw good reviews. I'm sorry I just could not get into this story and I found the characters annoying.

3.5 stars rounded down.

The pacing of this book was agonizingly slow, but the overall story is good. The romance storylines are sweet and keep you interested. The adversarial plots are mild, but help pad the story to make it more interesting. What keeps me reading is the romance between Rose & Thorne, the atmosphere, and the prospect of a larger conflict we are building toward in the final book of the trilogy. I was also glad to see the original fairy tale come into play in this book a little more.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title within the series set box. (Audible Membership)

This episode is packed with drama and mystery, the love of friends and family warring with the love of home and the heart.
It's hard to be a princess when so many want you for their own reasons for political advantages. Few want just the friendship and love of a woman, especially a non magical human.
It's sch a great tale, but I don't want to give away too much of the storyline.
