Ugh! In the first chapter a statement was made about Prince Albert the husband of Queen Victoria having an affair. Then it was stated that it was so hushed up that no record existed. So how did the author know about it. It switched back and force from novel to biography. Can’t believe this book got past the editors.
I'm sure there are the makings of a really good yarn buried among the pages of this book, but they are extremely well concealed. But to be fair, I didn't finish it. I struggled through all the way to page 45 by which time I was comprehensively defeated by the turgid prose and the flowery over-detailed language in the contemporaneous quotes. I skimmed through to the end, and the literary style seemed to remain consistent. Disappointing.
