Hannah Shaw was born into a large family of sprout munching vegetarians.
As is the oldest child, she spent her formative years trying to be good at everything; from roller-skating to gymnastics. Hannah soon realised there wasn’t much chance of her becoming a gold medal winning gymnast, so she resigned herself to drawing pictures and writing stories!
By some mean feat Hannah found herself at the University of Brighton doing a degree in illustration. Soon an overwhelming obsession to make books took over her life. Inspired by her love of furry animals, Hannah wrote and illustrated her first picture book Evil Weasel, published by Jonathan Cape (Random House) in 2008. Her next book Erroll, about a boy who finds a squirrel in his packet of nuts, is out in 2009.
Hannah currently lives in a little cottage in the Cotswolds, with her husband Ben the blacksmith and her rescue dog Ren. Her over-active imagination fuels new ideas but unfortunately keeps her awake at night!
It is time to pig, sorry, pick, a unicorn! Which one will our princess pig? Sorry, again, pick! :P
When I spotted this book on Amazon while browsing for new releases, I knew this one would be a book I would love. Unicorns? Check! A cute pig who coincidentally is a unicorn? YES! Colourful and fun illustrations? Sign me up!
This book begins on the day that Princess Pea (her real name is much much longer, welcome to royal names) gets to choose her own unicorn. Something she has been wanting for years and now is finally the time. I loved that a princess could pick a unicorn, and that unicorns were even a thing in this world. But it seems that, despite magic being banned by the queen (who I found a tad mean for all she did) there are tons and tons of magical creatures! Back to unicorn picking. Before that event happens we get to learn the princess and oh my I would have loved to be friends with her when I was her age. I was exactly like her. Mud is totally fine. Treehouses are cool. Adventures, yes please! Who cares about silly dresses and perfection, playing outside and doing what you want is much more fun. I was happy that her parents did allow her to work in the garden and have a treehouse. Given how the mom is I was worried she would have said no.
In the meantime I had also tons of fun looking for the pig. Yep, that naughty little magic unicorn pig can be found on quite a few of the illustrations before we officially meet him. I loved that! I was really looking forward to seeing where the pig would show up now and what he would be doing.
And then the unicorn parade happens, and boy, I wasn't a fan of the unicorns. They are all so snooty, but also very shiny and pretty. If you want something to look at I guess a unicorn is nice, but otherwise, eh. And I say that as a big unicorn fan. Then again, I do know there are also kind unicorns, but in other stories. In this one the nice unicorn is... a pig. I loved the idea of a unicorn pig! His unicorn horn was also way prettier. Plus, it seems that he can do some magic, teehee.
The ending was superduper fun. With marshmallows, magic, baths, and something more. I think that the queen and king and of course Princess Pea will have a hilarious and magical time ahead of them. I do hope that the queen will loosen up and maybe be more kind and allow more magic. Perfection is nice, but magic trumps that. At least for me.
The art was playful, colourful, fun, and I loved it!
I am also delighted that there are 2 more books in store for Unipiggle and Princess Pea. I cannot wait for them to come out, I need them now!
I would highly recommend this book to all. Especially in the time of a pandemic we could all use some colour, some magic, and some roll around humour. And this book is perfect for that.
Unipiggle The Unicorn Pig. Just the name had me smiling. My grandmother collected ornament pigs so anything pig has me interested. Add unicorn to it and I’m jumping right in. We also get introduced to Princess Pea, the muddy princess. This story is ideal for ages 6-8. My six year old granddaughter absolutely loved this book. The illustrations are amazing. Bright, vibrant and it just grabs your attention straight away. The storyline is super good which we absolutely loved. One of the best kids stories I’ve read in a while.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. In my case, when life gives you a kid who loves bedtime stories, why not start enjoying all those books for children yourself?
This one is a feel-good, funny, question-yourself-as-a-parent, whimsical, utterly enjoyable book about a girl and a magical unicorn pig. I loved the story as much as the pictures, finding myself exploring the tiny details in the illustrations. I can't wait to read this along with my kid (because yes, I binged this book myself, just because I can)!
This is a lovely chapter book with great illustrations that have alot of fun things to spot in them. The story is hilarious and plays on all the boring old princess tropes. There's Twinkle Land rules at the beginning and a map. In a land where magic is forbidden I can't wait to find out what future havoc Unipiggle is going to create.
“Welcome to Twinkleland. We love Perfect! Please obey all the rules.”
“Unicorn Muddle (Unipiggle the Unicorn Pig #1)” is set in the kingdom of Twinkleland, a magical land of pixies, sweets growing on tree, unicorns and so on. It also has a queen who seeks perfection from all her subjects, and who is very pernickety and organised about it. A short list of rules is presented in this book signed by her, Queen Bee, and her husband, King Barry with rules such as “blow your nose and wash behind your ears” and “best frocks (frilly dresses) and smocks (fancy tunics) only”.
For their daughter “Princess Peony Peachykins Primrose Pollyanna Posh – Princess Pea for short” this gets a bit much. “She found her daily schedule a slog. Being PERFECT was tiring.” She’d much prefer being messy and playing outdoors.
The story follows the day of the Unicorn Parade. “Princess Pea was the only member of the Royal Family who had learned to ride” but she currently rode a wooden unicorn so needed to choose a real one. Princess Pea reads in a magical creatures book about unicorns that she should “beware – they are usually selfish and snooty as well as vain and boastful”. When it comes to the parade she gets worried. “She’d been so excited about having her own unicorn, but it seemed like the fact book might have been right. A Royal Unicorn would definitely not want to get muddy or dig holes or sneak into the attics with her.”
Luckily a unicorn pig arrives on the scene and things suddenly get interesting again. “No one knew quite how or where the unicorn pig had come from. It hadn’t been in the parade earlier. It was almost as if it had arrived by… magic”. However the queen will never let her choose it as her unicorn. That is a storm hits and the princess disappears and it is down to Unipiggle to save the day.
The book is full-colour throughout “with pictures in all the colours of the rainbow.” It makes the book an attractive product for new readers. And the characters in the story are good too, with the queen who wants everything perfect, and the princess who wants to be messy. Plus it is well written with the story offering a great introduction to the series as a whole. Maybe in future books we’ll get to learn more about Unipiggle and his personality as he comes into this book late (with the adventure part of the book also being at the end). After the story finishes there is a “How to draw Unipiggle” feature so that readers can create their own Unipiggle stories.
This is a truly magnificent book for young readers! It’s full of fun, it’s witty and it explodes with colour on every page. I read Unipiggle to my 5 year old daughter and we loved every minute of it. I love that it’s about two characters, who are different from everyone else, finding each other.
Princess Peony Peachykins Primrose Pollyanna Posh (or Princess Pea for short) lives in Twinkleland Kingdom and gets made to perform her princess duties by her parents, Queen Bee and King Barry. She would rather be climbing trees and getting dirty. Her parents decide to throw her a Unicorn Parade so that she can choose her favourite unicorn to have as the Royal Unicorn. Princess Pea finds the unicorns to be snooty and vain until she meets a unicorn pig. Although there are those who don’t believe a pig can enter the parade Princess Pea chooses Unipiggle and they become the best of friends. After all, who wouldn’t want a unicorn pig with very surprising magic powers.
This is the perfect book for parents and teachers to read aloud as I guarantee they’ll enjoy it just as much as the kids. I love that there are pixies for every possible situation (like the Marshmallow Clearance Pixie), that the king is called Barry, and that most unicorns are actually self-absorbed. Hannah Shaw is a brilliant storyteller and her illustrations fill you with joy. You can’t help smiling and having a bit of a giggle as soon as you pick the book up.
K - aged 6 it has a unicorn pig and a princess called princess pea and they go on adventures. it was good and amazing because it had loads of cool adventures.
Join Princess Pea in a parade where she finds her unicorn for life… or her unicorn pig for life. Princess Peony Peachykins Primrose Pollyanna Posh (Princess Pea) is not perfect like everyone and the rules. She never wants to eat salad for every meal. And she definitely does not want to not use magic. Will Princess Pea find a companion who is not perfect like her? I really enjoyed this and so happy that @picklesanddinosread lent it to me in our book swap. Alice- aged 8
This FULL COLOUR highly illustrated young reader book is a great and fun addition for young readers moving on from the reading tree but aren’t quite ready for early chapter nor to give up the fun visuals and colour of picture books. Princess Pea is fed up of all the rules her mum and dad have placed upon the kingdom such as no bad smells, and no magic or being messy or messing up the best or second best garden. This perfectly perfect kingdom to Princess Pea (and indeed my 6 year old) seems a little sad and disappointing. When Princess Pea is expected to choose a Royal Unicorn she is not impressed with anything on offer, until she discovers Unipiggle who brings joyful muddy chaos into her life and is just a little bit magical! It ALSO has a map!! my 6 year old adored and studied this in great detail before reading the book and giggling away reading out bits and pieces aloud from the story!! This book encourages children to embrace who they are, even if they don’t live up to high but well intended expectations and that you can still be a Princess and covered in mud.
A fun little read about a rebellious princess who loves to play in the mud and eat sweets, and what happens when she has to select a unicorn companion. Gleeful tone, suitable for young readers.
