Oh, man. This volume and the next one simultaneously give Yu/Mika shippers what we want and what we most dread. It’s a serious emotional rollercoaster. However, if you were one of the people who stopped reading here, fear not! There are future developments you will probably like…which is why it gets such a high rating from me.
(Though I should note that there will continue to be a lot of emotional ups and downs - increasingly gay ones - for the foreseeable future)

Full review of anime and manga up to chapter 100 or so: https://ajungleoftales.blogspot.com/2...

Best and worst moments (spoilers, obviously!):
- There's a scene in dark ages Greece, where a tiny Yu (maybe 4?) finds Krul, Ashera, and Noyu standing around a glass box containing what appears to be Mika with angel wings, and his reaction is: “Wooow! What a pretty girl!” XD
Then tiny Yu gets beheaded, with the reveal that the First has been growing various copies of him. Yikes. But…Yu and Mika both being ancient confirmed!
- Back in the present day, Mika has found the kidnapped Yu. But so has a demon-possessed Guren, and Mahiru is in enough of a physical form to fight. Still, Mika manages to get to Yu and cut him free.
- Shinoa wakes up as herself, much to Mitsuba’s relief; Shinoa has to tell her to stop hugging so hard, since she just crashed into concrete! Mitsuba tells her about Yu’s kidnapping and, just as they are trying to figure out a strategy, they spot Yoichi dragging Kimizuki (unconscious) and his sister Mirai (dead). Much to their shock, Yoichi tells them that Guren killed Mirai, and he has serious doubts about this supposed plan to revive everyone.
- Meanwhile, Mika is extremely frustrated that Yu would even consider trusting the obviously-possessed Guren: “Whaaa?!...It’s painfully obvious he’s sketchy, and it always has been!” [Yu] “But in the end he’s always been on our side.” [Mika] “Aaaaugh! Aren’t you listening to me?! Now isn’t the time for…” (Turns away, wheezing, to recalculate. Turns back with a slightly manic grin) “Y-yeah, Yu-chan! You’re absolutely right!...But in order to protect us he let his demon possess him. Now he’s in big trouble!...We have the perfect, foolproof plan that’s absolutely, 100% guaranteed to save him! And right now, it says we have to run away, so we can meet up with everybody else first!” Which Yu enthusiastically accepts.
Ah, Mika. You’re so smart…Why’d you have to fall for this idiot? Just kidding – I love the little moron too!
- Mahiru reminding Yu that they met once, when he was five, cast out as “demon spawn”. She asks if he ever found a reason to live. His response? “I remember now. That’s right. I did find one. I have a reason to live. I have you, Mika.” Auugh, Mika’s shock and then little smile as Yu grabs onto his wrist! [Yu] “I have a family that loves me now. For me, there’s only ever been, and there only ever will be one correct answer.” And, OMG, the way that transitions into a hand-hold as they resolve to blast past the threat, together!
- Unfortunately, Guren is, in Yu’s words, “stupid strong” right now. Mika takes a cut across the back to shield Yu, which means it is Yu’s turn to bridal-carry him and run! Yu tells him to just go ahead and drink some blood (Mika’s face already being tucked into his neck, after all), while he finds them a place to hide. Which leads to this iconic sequence:
“Dammit! Why’s it hafta feel so weirdly good to have my blood sucked?! I hate that part! And it makes me sleepy too! Can’t sleep now! Gotta stay awake!” (Yu runs into a building, but Mika isn’t stopping, and Yu has to kick him off so he’ll still be in shape to run and fight) [Mika, blushing hard] “Sorry, Yu-chan.” [Yu] “S’okay. So, uh…was it good?” [M] “Yeah. It was really, really good.” [Yu, clearly pleased] “I taste really, really good, huh?” Um. Guys? Are we still talking about blood here? XD
- Yu decides to loose more of his demon to compensate for the blood loss. This…does not work out quite as he hopes! He’s not exactly communicative in his demon-possessed form and just bashed his own head through a ceiling. [Mika] “Yu-chan, please! I can’t do this alone! Please, Yu. You said you’d run away with me, remember?”
“Yu” does start fighting, and talking, again, but Mika is instantly suspicious when called “Mikaela”: “Who are you?” And this is when he learns that Yu’s demon is a Tepes, just like the vampire queen who turned him!
[Ashuramaru, through Yu] “We run. I protect…Yu…I protect…you too. Yu’s telling me to. Loudly. He says…you…family.” Which gets another rare smile from Mika!
- Guren is still too strong for them, though. Yu is injured, so Mika decides he has to take Guren out once and for all, whatever the cost. [Yu] “Mika, stop!”… [Mika, with an incongruously gentle expression] “Don’t worry, Yu-chan. I’ll keep you safe.” He tells his sword: Take this ugly pathetic life of mine, an vomit out every last drop. (Vampire swords are also kind of vampiric and run on the blood of their wielder)
The resulting stroke is strong enough to decapitate buildings and force Guren to retreat, though not kill him. But Mika himself got cut in half and is disintegrating from blood loss.
- Yu is distraught, trying to get Mika to drink his blood, all of it if need be, but Asuramaru says he’s too far gone. [Yu, weeping] “Please, Asuramaru! I don’t care what happens to me! Just save Mika! I…I don’t want to be alone. Not like this… Not again…”

So…yeah, I see why some people quit reading! But this is a story centered on Yu and Mika – so I knew it was unlikely that either would be permanently killed off while there are still so many plot threads entirely unresolved. Plus, this is a vampire story, and vampires are notorious for repeatedly rising from the grave! God, it still hurts, though! And the next volume just digs in the knife further before holding out a glimmer of hope.

This does illustrate the unhealthy levels of co-dependency in Yu and Mika’s otherwise ridiculously sweet relationship. They care about each other more than anything else, but both have major self-hatred issues that make it difficult for them to realize that them dying, even to save their loved one, is that loved one’s worst nightmare! Quite literally, in the case of Yu, who already went through four years of nightmares in which Mika bleeds out in front of him or gets drained by Ferid. This issue actually gets brought up explicitly by pretty much the last character you’d expect (at least based on this volume) in a future installment. I think Yu and Mika know on some level that “Without you, I couldn't bear to live” is a manipulative thing to say, which is why they haven’t expressed that thought to each other. But…that means neither knows that their own death would lead to such depths of despair!

• I'm just so curious about what's happening is Yu just a clone? Why were there many Yu clones? And his Yu's Mika the same angle Mikaela? The one in that coffin?
• Mika "manipulating" Yu to run as a plan to get the others to help save Guren is one of my fav moments 😂😂😭 goshh Yu is soo gullible
• That 'I have a reason to live, I have you Mika.' just killed me ❤ or that 'why it have to feel weirdly good to have my blood sucked?!' AND THEY ARE TRYING TO TELL ME I SHOULD BE SHIPPING YU WITH SHINOA? YOU KIDDING ME?
• I'm liking Ashura more and more
• DAMN YOU GUREN WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?
• Please tell me Mika won't die 💔

A lot happens! I'm sure the following volumes will explain it but geez is it bombshell after bombshell. I appreciate Kagami wants to go into a new direction with a heavier emphasis on everyone's past hundreds of years ago but the execution feels a bit haphazard. I also appreciate that Kagami has picked up the pace these last few volumes but maybe they could slow it down or have less constant developments.
Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the developments. Its great to see us come back to the Ancient Greece setting for Yu, Ashera, Krul, and now Noya and Mikaela. But even then we're introduced back to it to immediately get a bunch of lore drops about Yu being born from a lab over and over and Mikaela being hidden in a coffin and Noya is now here. These developments might read better in the monthly format with a month to digest, speculate, and discuss. But in a full volume its just a surge of constant info and developments.
Additionally, certain internal lore also feels like its close to breaking. So Mahiru is just now totally seeable. And Mahiru is a demon but it seems as if Noya is meant to be Mahiru's demon. So a demon has a demon? And then Ashera decides not to possess Yu and they split Yu's body? Everyone is getting enough power to get demon horns but no one's demon is possessing them? Even when demons mention they should want to?
As I previously said, this volume is definitely transitioning into a new section of the story. I don't think that's bad. But its definitely doing it in an awkward way. I'm not yet sold on the new direction even if I like its concept.
Some things are just handled a tad awkwardly. I appreciate continuing the epic battle and shitshow as it gets more personal and focused on the battle of Guren, Yu, and Mika. But also trying to turn into the new section about Yu, Mika, Ashera, Noya and everyone else who was around thousands of years ago makes it a bit messy and all over the place to me. You can tell which part Kagami is dying to write with some sections written very well. But other moments are written a bit out of character for Kagami with scenes that almost feel fanfic-ish or to please the fans like the galore of MikaYu content.
Just a bit awkwardly handled.

@ the author: you're not invited to my Mikayuu themed birthday party anymore. 😠😠

My poor little shipper heart was fed so well and then EMOTIONAL DAMAGE.😭 The amount of gay and angst is astronomical. Whole ass pride parade up in here. I appreciate that Yu gets to carry Mika princess style this time lol.

I don't know what I'm supposed to do with the information that being biten feels good for Yu while Yu tastes really really good to Mika like oh !!! When he said Mika is his reason for living, I was kicking my feet and passing out at the same time. Also all their little hand holding was about to put me on life support. The closet is made of glass.🌈

There's a lot of lore drop in this volume but also a lot of it felt kind of like made up bullshit?? I understand that of course this is all made up but it just feels like the author is making random shit up as he goes along, whether it makes sense in the lore and demon mechanics or not.

Suddenly everyone can see Mahiru and then Guren's sword has another demon who can also come out of the sword that everyone can also see? Then everyone is getting possessed by their demons and growing horns but then actually not being possessed by them? Guren is not possessed and neither is Yu and yet they are having a horn diva off.

Laughed my ass off that we get another child femboy as a demon like likely place for the child femboy to be.

It also goes to some more characters in Ancient Greece and revelations about some reincarnations and I'm so confused as per usual but Mikayuu content even though it hurt.🫶

I can’t really relate to Yu when he’s fully bleeding out and still has a smile on his face. It’s too unreal. But I appreciate that he sticks to his values on family despite everything else falling apart.

So we get a pretty cool fight with Guren and it is pretty well done as we get a lot of cool moments and some pretty cool upgrades for Mikela and Yu. We also get some more info about the previous flashbacks and while it is interesting I just hope there is some good payoff for this build up.
