A theatrical volume. And by that, I mean literally. What do you mean Richard convinces the people of England to let him be king by putting on a two person play with Buckingham? Absolutely ridiculous. And I love it! Not gonna lie, it's killing me how the moment Richard defeats an enemy, another one immediately spawns up to take their place. My guy cannot have a moment of peace. Tis the life of a man in power.

Requiem of the Rose King #13
Story and Art by Aya Kanno
Reviewed December 16, 2023

“God save Richard, England's royal king!”

Yes, Richard is now King Richard III. The longed-for result of all the plotting is achieved as Richard of Gloucester now sits on the throne. The price, though, has been high as Richard continues to be forced to deal with his own internal conflicts – his body issues and sexuality, his desire to do good yet owning a ruthlessness he isn’t afraid to use. A perfect blend of angelic and demonic.

Just like in Shakespeare’s play, Richard and Buckingham put on a persuasive performance that wins over the support of the people and Richard being offered the crown. The coronation is followed by a banquet, with entertainments that include a play. Unknown to those attending, one of the masked players is none other than Henry of Richmond, whose presentation is filled with veiled allusions to the king, all of which are negative. Naturally, this causes an uproar. Richard is suspicious of this player but decides to let the matter go – for now. Instead, he invites everyone to a ball he calls “The Devil’s Paradise” where everyone is invited to dress as someone else, a kind of variation on the Lord of Misrule. At Anne’s suggestion, Richard attends incognito, dressed as a woman, turning many men’s heads.

Although Richard wants to improve his relationship with Anne, it is Buckingham that he is drawn to over and over, the one person who he believes has ever accepted him for who and what he is. The two of them slip away from the ball, and when they are alone, Bucky asks Richard to call him by his given name – Henry. Naturally, that triggers memories of another Henry…and while all this is going on, the mysterious assassin Tyrell is tracking down the lovers…

Another fun-filled twist on Shakespeare and history, filled with angst and sexual tension.

With Volume 13, we get the culmination of all the plotting: Richard finally ascends the throne of England. The princes in the tower are quietly dispatched and power is consolidated. But the price has been steep as Richard continues to battle the duality of his nature: both male and female, angel and devil, saint and sinner, and with no place to truly call home.

Story: Through cleverly orchestrated theatrics, Buckingham and Richard convince the people of England that it is their choice to make Richard King. But as evening falls, Richard is finding it difficult to put off consummating his relationship with his queen. He is always drawn back to the only warmth and acceptance he has ever had: with Buckingham. But there is a Henry in the past who is now haunting even that relationship. And a new thorn has appeared in his side in the form of Henry Tudor.

Despite the big moment in this volume of Richard ascending the throne, there are serious clouds on the horizon, especially with the relationship with Buckingham. Those versed in the Shakespeare play upon which this is based will know how things will soon go downhill very fast. There are several hints of what is to come but, of course, it will be interesting to see how Aya Kanno spins it.

This continues to be a fun and imaginative take on Shakespeare's play. I appreciate that Kanno took out a lot of Plantagenet prejudices that Shakespeare was obliged to put in a play written for the Tudor era monarchy. Now that Henry Tudor has appeared in this volume 16, we have most of the players in place for the end of Richard's reign. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Oh, the drama...

The historical political intrigue, the beautiful atmospheric art, the compelling characters arcs — and now it’s getting an anime!

Yes!

A retelling of Shakespeare’s play Richard III, but with Richard hiding his intersex condition, the story follows the familiar beats you might recognise from Shakespeare’s play, but Kanno spins it in a direction that still surprises you along the way.

This has got to one of my favourite series in recent years. There is nothing about this I can find fault with. Kanno has brought the story to a whole new level that leaves you craving more. Her art styles is breathtaking, the imagery and symbolism is a feast for the eyes and the gothic heart. Also, Richard is so stunning. I can’t keep my eyes off him.

It also takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. The story takes certain directions that leaves me shocked and on the edge of my seat. It’ll leave you wanting more.

This is such an excellent series, and I can’t wait for the next volume and the anime.

13 volumes in and I'm still SO IN LOVE with this series - so dark, so dramatic, and such a hot mess of love/lust/power . . . also, we get Richard in a dress, and he is absolutely stunning. everyone thinks so, especially a certain someone he can't live without (so many conflicting feelings here, but I'm choosing not to think too hard about it and just enjoy the ride).

Guys I mean this volume was great in that the coronation of Richard coincides with his and Buckingham's developing feelings for each other. "Developing" is a mild way to put it. It's tearing them apart. This volume really had it all: a coronation! angst and emotions in the rain! more murder (what's new tho) a masked ball! cross-dressing! identity porn! Luciferean imagery! HIGH HIGH HIGH Gothic romance imagery! I mean. This truly reached peak Gothic romance freak4freak territory with

Anyway I'm just going to enjoy every precious moment of Richard and Buckingham/Henry Stafford for now.

I want to start again by saying that daaaamn this series makes me feel such a mix of things that I'm faint. Even though I know very well everything is going downhill fast anytime now, the series keeps on dancing on that knife edge and I'm at the same time terrified and excited to turn the pages, haha.

So, no Edward V but Richard III as the king on England's throne. Buckingham and Richard do a little act and people are convinced they want Richard as their king. Clever, clever. But there's a bitter Lancaster sowing seeds of trouble.
However, the most troubling thing for Richard seems to be his relationship with Buckingham. And boy, is that a messed up thing too (but way too hot, ahahah) and I expect every page that somebody's gonna walk in on them. Anne almost did and awww, even though I don't really believe Anne and Richard would have any sort of happiness in this series, it gives these tiny glimpses of hope for me which I foolishly let affect me. Like when Anne was clearly having hots for Richard dressed as a woman, c'mon, maybe she would understand and you'd be fiiiiine! But there's also a clock ticking when it comes to Anne, so it'd be short-lived thing anyway...

And ufff, that cliffhanger! Please, I need the next volume yesterday.

Y Buckingham!!!! Y Richard!!!! El último episodio del tomo es bestial. Necesito poder leer el 14.

Usually, I'm not big on writing reviews for manga but with this one, I have to because holy wow, this little thing made my heart skip a few beats in the best way possible. I love those dark shakespearan twists and turns and oh my did we turn in this one. And oh my gosh, finally some true feelings and I just can't!
