Surveys the history and culture of ancient Egypt, describes the life and accomplishments of Ramses II, and looks at Egyptian tombs, temples, and artifacts
This is the second of Time Life Books’ publications in its Lost Civilzations series about ancient Egypt. It covers the New Kingdom’s 19th and 20th Dynasties, mainly focusing on the long reign of Pharaoh Rameses II (‘the Great’). Topics covered include Rameses’ impressive building programme, the scientific investigation of his mummy, the lives of Egyptian women in his day, and his beloved queen Nefertari, the restoration of whose beautifully decorated tomb forms a short pictorial essay. The final section deals with Egypt’s steady decline in the 20th Dynasty. As with all books in this series, it is well written, beautifully illustrated and full of information, providing an excellent introduction to the subject.
