“If I go missing, I beg of you, do not treat me as the Indigenous person I am proud to be.”This picture book is inspired by the letter Brianna Jonnie wrote to the police when she was fourteen years old. In it, she points out the police’s dedication to finding a white boy her age who went missing and asks to be given the same dedication if she goes missing rather than the dismissal that the police give other missing Indigenous girls her age. She asks for equal treatment, but more than that, she asks for Indigenous girls’ lives to matter to the police, media, and her community.
