In Volume 6, we finally get to see some content that hasn’t been adapted into the anime as of yet!
We follow Ray Starling/ Reiji Mukudori in both in-game and IRL perspectives. I actually like seeing the real life perspectives of the characters, I just think it gives them more depth. We are also introduced to our third member of Altars Big 3, and wow was she a riot. Not sure how I feel about her as a character yet, but I’m sure that’ll be decided soon.
This volume I flew through, and will be moving straight onto volume 7. Thank you Infinite Dendrogram for another 5 star volume to match the rest of the series.

Yeah, didn’t enjoy the anime all that much. What is released of it anyway, so onward to the novels!

───────────────────

I AM still watching the anime, despite the fact I’m a little behind so I hope that it will become a lot more entertaining than it is now. That being said, I do think that this novel is probably the most amusing of the 6 I’ve read so far. Characters are introduced, returning ones are explored in bigger details and Onee-san Starling is just being teased throughout of it that I will sacrifice both Ray and Shu, for her to make an appearance. Yes, that’s how far I’m gone right now and Sakon Kaidou doesn’t make it easier whatsoever.

The volume in itself is a filler, literally the only thing I can call it, since the plot isn’t really advancing despite the characters getting stronger. But, then again that’s what being in an MMO is all about. Yours truly is a semi active FFXIV player, yet I’m neglecting the main story quests just because I’m cleaning up beast tribe quests and leveling up my disciples of the land. Do I regret it? Nope. Will I continue doing just that when I’m done writing this? Hell, yes. Being able to experience every little thing in a whole new world is the beauty of MMOs, now imagine being able to full dive, I’m literally never going to come out of there.

Anyways, the main things to notice when a volume like this comes along are the characters and Infinite Dendrogram excels in one thing above all others for me, namely making Ray and Nemesis the least interesting of the introduced cast. To me personally, they can be easily considered boring when taking in the colourful additions like Shu, Franklin and the few superiors briefly introduced in this volume to name a few. Therefore, it grates my nerves when Ray has to fulfill the job description of the main character when I’d rather anyone else get to do it instead.

Really, it’s insane how each volume makes that feeling grow stronger and stronger.

I mean it doesn’t really help when Ray is falling deeper and deeper into the “how convenient was that?!” Pool. If he spent more time in the game, I’ll think that it’s a natural progression but the guy’s a noob who got lucky, multiple times and will only continue to get lucky every single time. It was interesting the first few times, but by now I’m done and I’m way over it. A game needs a challenge, not a very convenient set of skills that makes the MC a way stronger entity than need be.

Ever since I read volume 5, this has been more apparent than ever (I know it started in previous volumes) and volume 6 is only pushing down on the gas pedal, it’s not slowing down at all. At the moment, I’ll consider it a con to the series but who knows what will happen? I do think that game wise this is probably the best I’ve seen as of yet, so I hope it will continue to be so.

To be very honest, in the end, of the side characters weren’t as interesting as they were or the bits and pieces of comedy didn’t hit every single time, this would have been rated way less than this. But at least I was entertained and that’s never a loss :)

Final rating: 3/5

I recently binged the last three volumes and genuinely enjoyed each one too much to even rate them separately. While many readers might dismiss Volume 6 as a filler, I'd say otherwise. It actually gives us a glimpse into Ray's real life and hints at the possibilities of him forming connections beyond the world of Infinite Dendrogram.

The reveal of Shu's true identity was also a great twist, and it made me curious to learn more about their older sister and the lore surrounding their family.

That said, I do wish there was less unnecessary chatter and undermining of Nemesis. I wanted to see more of her growth and evolution into her later forms.

One thing I appreciated was Rook's previous job changing to 'Lost Heart', since that fixed one of my long-time icks with the series.

Overall, while a few side stories dragged and felt like background noise, the main plots and quests remain engaging and full of energy. The series captures the feeling of playing through an MMO perfectly, from being a total noob to unlocking a superior job. I'll definitely keep reading to see where the adventure goes next.

This one really didn't live up to the rest of the series. Even as a standalone it just wasn't all that spectacular. It is obviously setting up a new story arc, but at least half of it was just boring and introduced probably my least favorite character of the series thus far, Tsukuyo Fuso. Incredibly uninteresting to me. Even Franklin is more interesting. Sadly I have a feeling she's going to be around a fair bit. Thank goodness for Kozue Fujibayashi this volume's one saving grace, though not enough of her to pull it out of the hole. Let us hope that SHE's the one around and Fuso is relegated to the position of minor nuisance.

If you're a Dendro fan check it out from the library so you know what's going on, but don't expect great things from this particular volume.

Veremos.

It starts with some random BS event that forced the introduction of a couple new characters. I didn’t really enjoy the first half of the book...
However, Dendro books always deliver that cool shounen experience, I like the MC’s style and having started on book 7 already, I can confirm this 6th volume is just a long intro that will result in a fairly superior next volume.

The popularity of Sword Art Online is a bit had to understand when Infinite Dendrogram, it's fellow VRMMO series, is superior in every aspect.

The main difference would be that Sword Art has a death game setup, while Dendrogram just chronicles a VRMMO adventure. While that that might seem much less exciting at first, it gives the series a nice relaxed feel, even when wars are fought and players are killed. One could call it the perfect combination of pleasant isekai-ish escapism with high stakes shonen battles.
