Inspire your little scientist with this Kohl's Cares "The 101 Coolest Simple Science Experiments" activity book. Kohl's Exclusive PRODUCT FEATURES Colorful photographs & illustrations Detailed science experiments
I was looking for some experiments to do with my two toddler grandchildren and I was hoping that this book might be able to provide me with some ideas. While it did provide some simpler ones that they would find fun, I think the majority of these experiments are for older elementary children.
Each science experiment is labeled into either Kitchen Chemistry, Exploring the World, The Human Body, and Physics and Making Things Move. They were also individually rated on a Mess Meter, from 1-5, letting you know, just how messy this experiment could get. I liked that they also used additional labels, if Adult Supervision is Required and whether Safety Precautions are necessary. With Prep Time and Experiment Duration time calculated for you, this additional bonus helps with planning and time constraints. You don't need to be knowledgeable in science either to fully grasp each of these experiments, as each lesson lays everything out for you. From the Supplies Needed, the Science Question and answer written out for you. Also on each page are directions on how to do each experiment, what the desired Outcome should be, and Why It Worked. Tips, tidbits of fun facts, and other information are also given. I can't forget about the illustrations either. There are some pictures scattered through this book of individuals and these science experiments. This is the complete package.
So what types of activities are inside: Dancing Candy, Rising Raisins, Grow Giant Worms, Orange Float, Invisible Ink, Catapults for Distance, Popsicle Stick Eruptions, Hot Ice, Colorful Cabbage, Grow a Bean in Your Mouth, Glitter Germs, Naked Eggs, and Rain in a Cup are just a few of them. Overall, a great resource for children able to understand and grasp what is transpiring. 4 stars
Have you wondered how much air is in your lungs? Or what an egg looks like without its shell without cracking it? Can bones bend? Can you sprout a bean in a half hour using your mouth?? If you weren't wondering before, I bet you're wondering now! These awesome questions and more are answered in this book.
There are a lot of science project books aimed at kids, but this one is far and away my favorite. I like the format of each experiment. It clearly lays out a question, procedure, outcomes, the science behind the experiment, and additions/variations to explore further. There are color photos throughout, which really draws you in to some of the stranger experiments. Each activity has a mess-meter and whether or not you need adult supervision, which gives kids a lot of agency in exploring science. Plus the experiments are really, really cool.
I booktalked this for a group of kids raging from 2nd through 10th grade and there were projects that every single kid was interested in. They would make great library STEM programs, but also would be fun to do at home.
Provides instructions for simple experiments, both indoors and outdoors, using readily available materials, that demonstate scientific facts about the natural world, the human body, and the basic laws of physics.-- Source other than Library of Congress.
Such a fun cool book of ideas. Forget the kids a bunch of these i want to try for myself! Wish each project came with a visual just to give more of an aid. Other than that really easy to understand directions
Looking for some fun science experiments to do with your kids? Love science? Learn the science behind magnetic slime, naked eggs, dancing candy, invisible ink, and more as you make some fun creations.
This book is well-laid out, has easy to follow steps, and has a lot of fun science experiments that work well with large or small groups. The photos are detailed and really help bring the experiments to life. Included is a detailed index for easy referral. To add fun to the mix, the cover glows in the dark. Teachers or students who love science will love this book.

There are some good ideas in this book backed by correct science.
I enjoyed the messiness ratings, the safety tips and the suggested variations. I also appreciate that all of the required materials can be found already at home or fairly easily and inexpensively.
Two points that irritated me: 1) (small irritation) Antarctica, contrary to what is noted in the book, IS A DESERT
2) (HUGE irritation) Holly's pick for the kitchen chemistry section has a sentence that begins, "Living in a household with three boys..." and does NOT end with 'means I have to put the toilet seat down often'. Instead, it ends in a solid gender stereotype. Holly, seriously?!? How can you help to write a book dealing with SCIENCE and then do this?!? The SCIENCE shows this type of gender-stereotyping is completely baseless. As a woman in STEM I say we have far too many of these types of gender stereotypes to deal with already. We have NO need whatsoever to have reinforcing these stereotypes to parents to pass along to their children. UGH!!! I almost dropped my rating down to three, or even two stars due to this complete BS. But, my conscience would not allow me to do it.
Overall, a decent book with some good science and related activities for children. I must give the copy that I read back to the library. However, I have added it to my list of books to buy when I finally get money to buy books again (bah-humbug to COVID-19 on that one! - with cheers to this book's glitter-germs hand activity and bread-wiping-germs-on-surfaces activity).
This is a fun book of science experiments that I use for a library program called "Tween Time: Science Saturday!". Nearly two dozen Tweens and I get together in our library auditorium and do experiments straight from the book. We have a great time....and can sometimes make quite a mess! :-) A great book for STEM/STEAM/STREAM learning programs.
