Nagare Ryoma struggles with his new role and new teammates. Will Ryoma be able to step up when the Unevolved threaten the city, the institute, and the entire world?

The Getter Robo story unfolds a bit more in volume 2. Throwing parallel dimensions into the mix only adds to my interest. I like that this reboot/reimagining doesn't throw out the original material but instead consigns it to a parallel universe.

Anyway, Hayato keeps riding Ryoma, leaving Musashi to play peacemaker. Can the three Getter pilots stop the Unevolved and protect The Fragment of the Emperor? Duh!

In this volume, Ryoma stops being a mopey teenage and finally steps up. The Unevolved threat is explained a bit more and seeds are sown for future stories. Now the long wait for volume 3 begins.

Getter Robo Devolution continues to be a buffet of my favorite things: giant monsters, giant robots, and parallel dimensions. Four out of five stars.

First volume of this trilogy was like reading a lame "Getter meets Neon Genesis Evangelion" remake for me (the three Getter pilots against the Angels Unevolved and protect Lilith The Fragment of the Emperor... really?), luckly this second volume was far better than first one.

The introduction of parallel world concept just made this series NOT a remake, Hayato Jin is more and more the usual cool piece of shit, old crazy warmonger prof. Shikishima's appearance was as good and hilarious as previous ones in former Getter Saga versions, and the whiny Shinji Ikari Ryoma turning at last into the real Nagare everybody knows and loves was a real blast.

If the art wasn't so dark, I would have given this 3 stars. I am very interested by the premise of the story. Alternate universes affecting this one, with infinite copies of the people but with alternative motives.
I'm not sure I will pick up more volumes of this, but if I did I probably would move forward and not go back to volume one, even though I started here in volume 2. It seems like I got enough character backstory and catch up material here.
The story is a little slow and light, with a lot of reliance on the action scenes. That is part of the lower rating. The other part is the art. It looks pretty good for what you can see. But either it was printed too dark or the artist uses too much dark fill instead of lighter outlines. Some panels come out as almost a solid black mass.

This volume was definitely the step in the right direction this series needed early on. The first volume was alot of edge action and shock to grab the reader's attention, but didn't have much else besides that. This one focused more on character development and establishing more about how this particular Getter operates.

Also has good messaging on not letting past trauma define our future interactions. It's definitely angsty, but this series is probably aimed at teens so its not a problem

This new version of Getter Robo is interesting. I'm not as familiar with the original as I am with this creative team's other modern take on a classic, Ultraman, but there are some interesting ideas here. The art is frenetic though the smaller size of the manga digest doesn't do it any favours. They've dropped hints about multiversal Getter Robos which I'm hoping pay off in future volumes.

I still don't even understand what this is about. Just seems like they have to fight some thing and that's about it

Significantly better than the first in terms of pacing, character development, getting me invested and overall making sense. I’m intrigued and curious to continue
