One of the things I really enjoyed about this book is that it gives you permission to keep things that you love that may serve no other purpose than that. It also gives you a bit of permission to procrastinate and not dive in a do it all at once.... which is where organizers tend to lose me. I have ADD and tedious boring stuff gets pushed to the back until I can't avoid it anymore and I want to spend as little time as possible doing it...this book gives me a great system to do just that.... organize in less time and small "bites". It is a quick read and doesn't feel at all overwhelming. I certainly recommend this book (and personally loved the chapter about brain chemistry)
Organizing Your Home with SORT and SUCCEED — Darla DeMorrow (7 chapters) March 5-11, 2018
When I started to read this book, I was really excited. The author said it would be a quick read, and that to would get right to the point. The first chapter was mostly fluff and overlapping sentences, and that kind of delated my excitement balloon. It also had “personal stories: of success, which turns me off mostly. (Chapter one should have been titled Intro.)
Chapter two was about brain science. And even though the author says I can skip that chapter and go to chapter three, where the real begins, I felt kind of bullied to read this chapter. I mean, if the author didn’t think it was important, why include it? Still, my balloon deflated further because this “quick read” was starting to feel not so quick anymore. As it turns out, there were good nuggets in this chapter, so don’t skip it even if author says you can! (Chapter two should have been titled chapter one.)
Chapter 3….This is where the real starts and I don’t know if it really says anything different from what I have read before in other books, but for some reason Chapters 3-7 (especially 3-5,) really struck me and I found myself putting the book down and actually doing some serious weeding in my closet and pantries. Chapter 4 tells you what order to go in, but I actually started in my bedroom because that is the room I wake up in and good to bed in and I think my state of mind functions better in a non-clutter environment. I didn’t want to wake up anymore to that clutter!
But seriously, this book really redeems itself in the finally chapters.
The best book I have read on de-cluttering, this can be enjoyed by both genders, and really motivated me to get busy about the business for once!
Aces, in my book.
Four stars. (I had to knock one off due to that first chapter.)
I love cleaning, organizing and decluttering books and I have a huge collection of them in my personal library. However, this little booklet was a huge disappointment and was promptly returned. I'm very surprised by the positive reviews. As far as content, there's absolutely nothing new or innovative here. If you've read other organization books, magazine articles or blogs, you undoubtedly already know every tip listed in this booklet. The booklet itself does not appear to be professionally printed and is ridiculously overpriced for the size, quality and content.
Organizing Your Home with SORT and SUCCEED: Five simple steps to stop clutter before it starts, save money and simplify your life (SORT and SUCCEED Organizing Solutions) by Darla DeMorrow is a book that teaches readers how to not only get organized, but to stay organized, and how an uncluttered space will have a positive impact on more than just your storage space. DeMorrow's organization system, as detailed thoroughly in her S.O.R.T. and Succeed steps, is a blueprint for how to get started, setting realistic goals, practical application, avoiding pitfalls, and getting your space into a state where the order endures.
There was so much in this straightforward book that I loved. DeMorrow offers her wisdom in a smooth and natural narrative, pointing out the obvious in a way that forces a reader to re-evaluate how they view their space. Certainly, it left me with a great deal to think about, and even had me laughing a bit. An example of this is when she says, "This might explain why we so often park $30,000 cars on the driveway, while we store $3,000 worth of junk in the garage." There's no question in my mind that armed with Organizing Your Home with SORT and SUCCEED (SORT and SUCCEED Organizing Solutions) by Darla DeMorrow, I will be able to finally make my home into the sanctuary I deserve, saving me money and eliminating stressors that create an imbalance in my home, as well as my mind, body, and spirit.
I have to move in a relatively short time, and have been looking at decluttering/minimizing books. This one is the best I've seen. It doesn't make you feel guilty for wanting to keep things you love. It's not about getting rid of all your stuff, rather, it's about making room for the things that you love by letting go of the things you don't. It's a practical guide that doesn't leave me with a feeling of dread and shame for being a life-long packrat. I didn't give it full stars because I haven't started yet. But the author is a professional organizer and she has helped countless people like me. She also goes into how our brains work and why it's our wiring that gives us the need to want to keep things we no longer have a use for. It's science. She gives clear steps to overcome these signals from our brains. I won't necessarily say I'm looking forward to going through all my crap, but I see the task with much less trepidation. That's the mark of a great decluttering book right there. With other books, it was always a feeling of not being good enough because I had things I was attached to.
There are many approaches to organizing clutter. I looked at a number of blogs and books and settled on using Darla DeMorrow’s simple and logical SORT system. Her well-practiced advice (she runs a cleaning company), in the long run, was the easiest to follow.
The key to her system is having you write down exactly what you plan to accomplish in the time you allot. Having a time frame and a goal keeps you from getting lost in reading an old magazine or wandering off with an item and then ending up reorganizing something else. If you are looking for a practical get-it-done method for organizing your belongs, you can't beat this book.
If your life has become to busy to devote days to organizing, this is a great book to read. Darla writes about having an "organizing project", not the impossible goal of organizing your whole house. I loved this concept because I can set aside a few hours on the weekend to conquer a project. She also writes about how the process of organizing isn't to get rid of stuff, but to make room for stuff you love. With this in mind, I'm taking on the kitchen today as my project so it will be a place to reach my health goals and make the rest of my day run more smoothly.
Great book on sorting and succeeding the clutter that we create. The books gives sound practical advice on conquering clutter. It is all about reduce, release and reset. Some tweaking may be needed, but you will get there. I will definitely incorporate some of the advice when I build up the nerve to conquer the clutter.
Quick little e-book, but nothing earth shattering or new to me. Things she says are not good I know to be helpful to many people, so I think it is just a matter of opinion as to HOW people like to organize and declutter. Good tips for people starting from scratch.
Some organization books are just too much! They are difficult to follow through with because they are way too complicated! Can you follow five simple steps? Then you will love 💘 this book!
It's not a bad book, but it just wasn't one of those earth-shattering "NOW I get it!" books. Perhaps it will be that way for others, though. (I think I've already read too many of these.)
This is a fabulous book! I love picking up organizational skills, and Darla DeMorrow is a wealth of information. You might think: I don't need a book like this, I just need to get it in gear and clean!! Well, guess what--that's what I thought, and I thought the book would just be a quick read through at night to put me in the mood. Boy, was I wrong! I learned all about the science behind messiness. Her information hits home, and it helped free up my 'I'll do it later' and 'I need a break' moments and made me think 'Let's just do it now!!' When you work, have kids and pets, life gets messy. Life is just one big cleanup, after all. Might as well work smarter, not harder. I'm finally doing things around my house that I kept promising myself I'd do when my son started college, when I wanted to move. No matter what stage in life you are at, no matter how big the mess, this book will help. Plus, you can join her on her Facebook page if you have questions or comments. It's a good group. I've picked up many tricks and tips, plus motivation to get me working that day! See you on FB.......
This is the most wonderful book to help you organize your home. After Reading this book, I was able to tackle the storage -junk Room right away. My husband and I have been using this particular room as a storage room for extra furniture, empty boxes from Amazon, loose tools miscellaneous electronic parts and devices. With the author 's method the room is almost empty now,and I will have a wonderful craft room when I am done. I highly recommend this book to everybody. Even those who only want to tidy their closet. This is the best book I have ever read on how to have a clutter free house Her system works for every room including the basement and garage. I feel that I will never have to buy another book on house cleaning.
For about 15 years, my former mother in law and I would begin prepping each year for two weekends in which we'd hold extremely successful garage sales, following your SORTS method, combining both our households. This format would begin in January, where we'd do all of the sorting and organizing in our boxes until April so we could go through again to donate or keep for the sale. We also would continue at home with continued organizing on a daily basis. I loved the way the author mentioned decluttering as a way to giving angels space in your home.
This is the third time, I've read this book. I felt myself slipping in my organization skills, so I decided to read this book for a third time. It has really helped me get organized around my house. The steps in the Sort and Succeed process are easy to learn and implement in any room of the house. I have been using this technique for about a year and a half now. I would highly recommend this book and the other books in the Sort and Succeed book series.
Finally, an organizing book that doesn’t make empty Promises!
This book took very little time to read, and I finished it and did two small projects! This book doesn’t claim that it will magically do anything, instead, gave me some fantastic guidelines to follow. Darla is a kind, compassionate writer who understands we don’t need to be perfect, but we do need to get started, and she is cheering us on to do just that!
[SORT]: s: start withe a written goal o: organiza by group r: reduce, release, reset t: tweak and enhance جربتها وكانت مفيدة وسهلة وعملية.
The book itself was very organized and easy to read. Darla breaks the process into very doable time allotments. I find that I am excited to get started on my own organizing adventure. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels overwhelmed at the prospect of cluttering their living space.
I have read numerous organizing books. This is one of my favorites. I believe that this book is applicable to anyone who is interested in a home that is easier to clean and maintain. My favorite idea is that having my house organized will give me more opportunities to "entertain angels" and allow my home to be a blessing to others.
This book is unique in the organizing world because it outlines a process that can be used in any situation! Instead of preaching ideas or ideals, this one provides a guide with such encouraging positivity that I am ready to start right away. Thanks for the Process! This book is well worth the money :)
The book holistically approaches the person, who is dealing with the clutter. There are small projects and larger goals, that can be achieved in the pace of the reader. The hardest step for most is where to begin, the book has a starting point and a process to keep the home clutter free.
Darla talks about how to organize and then STAY organized. It’s an awesome system and the book can be read in less then an hour. If you buy this on a Saturday and have a couple hours, you can learn the system and have your first organizing project done in one day!
The title says it all! This is an excellent book for feeling overwhelmed and unsure the next steps to take in organization! Use these simple and impactful steps to get your life under control again!
Easy to understand the why's behind the steps. Very clear and lots of resources and support. Very thought out plan of action, and understandable references to life situations.
Rate; 4.3. Quick read on how to be successful at sorting and decluttering any area. Simple steps that can be implemented immediately to stop clutter before it can begin. Recommended if you are looking for a process to stay organized and clutter free.
Much more practical and simple than other books. Five step program, consistent and practical, so much better than the "go all out" books. Can't wait to use the online helps.
Enjoyable and good organizing principles to think about. Not life changing unless your home is truly a disaster (as she seems to assume it will be) and you have no concept of organizing at all. No need to read again in the future.
Read several books on this topic. The new information was that there are three processes that are happening in synergy to keep your habits in motion. That info alone was worth the read. Thank you.
Although the author states that this book is unlike other organization books, I did not find much new or innovative in the approach. That said, it could be useful for some who have not looked at organizational approaches. You have to start somewhere and this approach breaks it up fairly well.
