This is a hands-on book, published in 2018, with ideas, methods and practical guides to creating the most beautiful spaces using the proverbial basic elements: Wood from the plants, fire from the sun, earth from our planet, metal from our rocks and water from our oceans.
The idea is that through a series of tests and questionnaires, you find your own voice and true inclination, and acting accordingly, you create a space that suits you and only you for a more harmonious way of living.
This is the cover of the book I read. It depicts a wooden sofa or futon, with three cushions; the one in the center is decorated with a red and white square pattern, the left one is white with a green leafed pattern, and the right one, which is half-covered by the red one is yellow with brown lines. There are white traces that suggest furious incursion of lighting through a window to the right. The light crawls under the sofa and somehow jumps over teh center of the red cushion, sparkling in all directions, making the space brilliant and alive.
On the back cover, we find the listing of the five elements, and a couple of words of promising deliveries from the careful reading of this book. We will learn how to make our lives even better if we follow Calamia's instructions and advice.
The editorial page informs us that this book was first published on 2018 bu Conari Press, and that Maureen K. Calamia is the author. The smart cover was designed by Kathryn Sky-Peck.
In the dedicatory, the author mentions her husband and children, and salutes them in Hindi.
In the contents, the author outlines her plan: first unveil the secrets of luminous spaces, then discuss the five natural elements, and finally helping the reader find her own nature and her best space creation.
In this fragment of the introduction, the author describes a paradise-like space that she encountered in Maui during her honeymoon, and how she still uses it as a setting for meditation.
In the opening paragraphs of her work, the author elaborates on luminous spaces, and the role played by each one of the important elements.
Here a suggestion I found interesting: Creating a permanent altar to be always reminded about the sacred in our daily lives (I really liked this one, and will create an altar myself)
Here are a few explanation of the elements
And finally, a few examples of the tools the author proposes to creating the best and more luminous spaces for our lives.
This is a good read, easy to follow, with some interesting exercises, and good advice that I will try to put in practice myself to make my personal surroundings a bit more agreeable and enjoyable.
I used to read very simple books on feng shui but also the encyclopedic stuff that all gave a basic overview of feng shui. For text, I'd say this might be the best I've read on the subject, and it doesn't seem as dated as those that attempt to include photos. (Photos tend to rapidly age). There are others that rank high, but to get a real look at the nature of elements and their interactions, I'd say this is influential both for beginners and people familiar with feng shui. I feel like my intuition is better guided and I'm less rigid about the elements. I'm both a metal and water type. I was born a Libra in a metal monkey year. Moon in Leo III and wood tends to dominate in my rooms. Scorpio rising also. My rooms tend toward eclectic organized clutter that serve a purpose. It's a challenge to finally break free of stuff I don't use, but technology is starting to assist with that a great deal. As a smoker who now vapes and uses gum (I only smoke twice a month), the gum has allowed me to lay back and read much more than my comfort would allow in the past. Thank you for this book!
Creating Luminous Spaces is a fresh take on an old modality of using our spaces for optimal support. The author, Maureen Calamia, offers not only the explanation of how to apply Feng Shui - but also how Feng Shui relates to your own natural traits based on the 5 elements found in Feng Shui...and nature. She writes with simplicity and communicates with ease how to understand this evolving practice based on her own love of nature and its offerings. You'll want to follow her profile on Amazon so as not to miss her next release as I did as she's a bright star in the Feng Shui community of authors. Creating Luminous Spaces is a book you won't want to put down, and one you'll want to keep on your shelf to return to with each new alignment in your interior ...and your life.
A charming book describing how to create your own luminous space. Through working with nature and the elements of Feng Shui, this book brings an introduction and tools to create and discover your luminosity.
Maureen describes the merging of the ancient practice of Feng Shui and the modern practice of biophilia with the theme of bringing nature into your world. The ever consummate teacher, kick off your shoes and place your feet in the grass or sand and read on.
I loved her book. I thought it was just fantastic. The way it was structured and organized so neatly made it easier for reading and rereferencing passages later. She does a good job displaying the five different elements, how they function, what seasons they correspond to, how they interact with each other and with us.
Maureen even goes so far as to get into what makes them ying or yang as well as how biophilic design blends well with and has aspects of feng shui in it. She even gives a helpful self assessment portion in the back by asking you questions that help you critically think and understand which elements you best relate to and how you can use that information to help you home and office spaces work for you and your intended purposes!
