Finding Jaime

Rate this book
"If I'd stood up for what I knew to be right, and not allowed myself to be bullied into suppressing who I really am, then I wouldn't be the huge fucking mess I am today. Well, I'm setting that straight. Now I don't give a damn because I know who I am. I know who I love is nobody's business but my own, and if anybody has a problem with it, then that's theirs, not mine.

I can't change who I am any more than you can change the color of your eyes. You might be able to cover them up and make them appear different, but they're still the same underneath no matter what you do."

Jaime knows deep down that there's something different about herself. Something that has been suppressed since childhood. Keeping her true feelings pressed down causes her to lead an unhappy life, with empty experiences that mean nothing to her.

One night, all of that changes.

Stumbling upon a secret club called 'House' introduces her to a world she's never given a single thought to. However, there she quickly understands that there's more to the club than meets the eye.

She has the chance to learn how to be herself and to explore her own sexuality without the risk of others finding out before she's ready.

One person is there for her every step of the way. A beautiful and mysterious woman known only as Butterfly guides her through her journey of self-discovery.

But, when Jaime is ready to admit to her feelings, an accidental discovery sends her reeling.

Will she forgive the betrayal from the one person she thought she could trust, or will she hang up her mask and hide away from her true self once more?

Warning.

Two years later and this book still holds a special place in my heart. It seems every time I read it I spot another similarity between myself and Jaime. I was her age when I literally stumbled onto BDSM only to shortly after realize that I also liked woman. Last but not least, just like I suspect Jaime is, I'm a switch and that's just the tip of the riding crop!

She's such an amazing character to read about. From learning that her view of that scary and dangerous world was so wrong to slowly accepting that she likes women and standing up to her atrocious mother, Jaime had me wrapped around her little finger from page one.

Yet she's not the reason this book also made it onto my list of character crushes. That spot is all for Joss. Quiet, reserved Joss who desperately wanted Jaime to finally see her for who she really is; a lady in the streets but a freak in the sheets!

Oddly enough the BDSM elements in this book are fairly tame. Other than some light bondage and a few toys there really isn't anything that holds any shock value. Well not unless you count how shocking it is that Jaime can't figure out who 'Butterfly' really is.

If you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for?

I absolutely loved this! Having said that, the story is very predictable (and slightly similar to Conquest) but somehow the writer kept me hooked throughout the entire book. So often I end up skimming a page or certain parts of dialogue that slow down a story but that hasn't happened once in this book. It has great main characters that have sizzling chemistry and the entire story just ended up being this slow burning seduction. This one will definitely be getting re-read sometime in the future and gets a full 5*.

I'm the odd one out this time, I know. I wrote a review, but it's on my phone. My reaction was such that I needed to get my thoughts down immediately while slightly seething in rage. *shrugs* Can't actually see my phone at moment, though, so . . ..

Guess I'll do a bare bones reconstruction of what I wrote, and then add more later. Or something. Maybe.

---

I did not like this book.

I rather disliked everything about this book, the main characters, the side characters, the side side characters (like Sam the sexually harassing boss), and the overall story line.

In terms of other characters: Jaime's parents - both of them, were horrible. Jaime's mother is a nasty horrible shrew; while Jaime's father was a weak ass piece of shit who never stood up for his daughter. This reminds me, though that I really liked what Jaime said to her mother when she finally snapped and called the mother out on her hypocrisy. So much so that I'm going to go ahead and add another star to my review.

I've forgotten what else I wrote on my phone.

Definitely one of the more unusual accepting-your-sexuality and coming out stories I've read. Jaime is a financial director (who seems to be utter bored by her job) so clearly has brains but what comes out of her mouth has no filter whatsoever. She's got good friends in Sadie, Cade and Joss but her mother is a challenge (read controlling, manipulative). She's been left unsatisfied by the 59 men she's has sex with. She really is an interesting character. The story is sexy, gritty and really not what I expected after the first two pages.

“Finding Jaime” is a tough one for me to rate - I’ve got very mixed feelings. Based on the explicit and graphic hetero sex on page one, I nearly DNF’d immediately.

Dicks. how many dicks have I taken in my twenty-four years? 58, I think... I’ve sat on, ridden on, gyrated on…

I roll off the guy I’m currently fucking and sigh...I can’t look at him as he removes the condom from his softening cock.

59.

I was advised that the rest of the book was lesfic, so I continued. MC Jaime figures she just needs to fuck enough guys, hating the act and the guys, to find Mr. Right. Yet, she can’t quite understand why shy, quiet, beautiful MC Joss attracts her attention.

Then, Jaime accidentally stumbles upon a private sex club, and gets invited to join. Interesting book, this section is. Despite all her slutty experiences, Jaime learns about desire and trust, and begins to explore her sexuality and who she is and what she wants (vs. what her mother wants and expects of her….the marry a man part, not the fuck dozens of them and throw them out part, I suppose).

MC Joss is sexual, sweet, honest, understanding and caring. She’s watched Jaime drink too much and fuck too many men that she didn’t even like…and she hated watching and not being able to say anything because Jaime wasn’t ready to hear what she had to say. Yet she desires Jaime. Talk about opposites attracting! Based on Jaime’s background, and her lack of understanding of herself, and lack of respect for herself, I was prepared to read this story as a redemption story - bad girl learns about herself and wins, and returns, the love of the MC that I really liked.

But then…Jaime learns a secret of Joss’ that Joss was preparing to tell Jaime. Jaime is angry, but later recognizes that

Her reasons make perfect fucking sense, and I know if the tables were turned, I would do the same.

Despite that revelation, Jaime decides

I decide I want to be cruel. I want to take away all of her control.

So, Jaime virtually rapes Joss. Not technically, because Joss gave Jaime permission to do whatever she needed to do. But…rape. [nb: after an extensive comment discussion and multiple re-readings, I no longer consider this scene as rape. Uncomfortable and fueled by anger, yes...but not rape]

Then they express mutual adoration, respect and love.

So…just as unlikable Jaime was winning me over, I’m back to really NOT liking her, and thinking Joss, for all of her own quirks and desires, deserves better.

The book ends with Jaime thinking

I proudly walk down the street with my girl and best friend, and for the first time in my life, I’m proud of who I am.

Without Jaime wanting to be cruel and humiliating kindhearted Joss, this would have been a 5* story. Lots of hot eroticism, great sex, one terrific MC (Joss) and another MC whose life becomes better and who becomes a better person. With that scene, placed just after Jaime realizes she can’t blame Joss, and just before declarations of love….I’m struggling. Part of me wants to rate the book a 1* or 2* just for that scene making me distrust Jaime even as the book has ended on an apparent HEA. I’ve waited two weeks after finishing the book to reflect, and write a review….and my dislike of the entire book has tempered.

I’m going to recommend this book, and only subtract one star for the crappy scene - so “Finding Jaime” gets 4*….but I’m going to have to flag this review with a spoiler tag, because I can’t express my disappointment without describing scenes and the ending, but I wish I could qualify my 4* recommendation before someone reads the book and is also disappointed.

Also, I wish I felt better about Jaime truly being a better person than she was on page one.

The cover for this book can either put you on or off but, either way, it doesn't quite fit the story. Going into it, I thought the book would be much more of an erotic piece than it was (along the lines of Meghan O'Brien's '13 Hours') and I was happy to find it had a good amount of character build up and story to it before any truly erotic element took place. And, completely unexpectedly, this does have a slow burn romance.

Jaime starts off the story as a very active but unsatisfied heterosexual so, as an f/f read, we first encounter an m/f scene...that doesn't happen often in lesfic but it's quick, at least, if that squicks you out too much. And we go on Jaime's personal journey where she learns to embrace her true self through the help of 'Butterfly', an intriguing and anonymous stranger she meets at a fantasy club.

The story weaves back and forth as we follow Jaime in her everyday life as she interacts with friends, family and co-workers versus her more vulnerable self she encounters in the club. As she is falling for Butterfly her heart is going towards her friend, Joss, outside of it and she must reconcile her feelings for both.

Jaime is on the cruder side for a lesbian protagonist (swearing, crass, up front and outwardly pretty much described as a big breasted floozy) but she's also refreshingly honest and, as the reader, we are privy to her private, more emotional self. She's not afraid to stand up for herself or set others straight, either. She's a likable lead.

A big portion of the book is actually non-sexual but there are a handful of explicit scenes, some more vanilla and innocent while others include light BDSM and role-playing. Whatever sexual or sensual element, a very sweet storyline rises and persists through the narrative, as well.

I found 'Finding Jaime' to be a pleasant surprise of a read and do recommend it.

Loved it. Jaime.... heh.... Yea. Great book. I mean the author makes it very very obvious what's going on. But poor Jai is a bit clueless. I mean you can't really disguise your voice right? First clue Jaime? Anyway. Lotta fun, even with her cussing like a sailor. I did 20+ in the military so cussing is no big deal, but it did surprise me some to have her be so.... guttural. lol. Anyway. Look forward to seeing what this author thinks up next. Great debut.

I've had this book forever and never read it before this as BDSM or erotica are not all that interesting to me. Turns out the book only has little of either, not really erotica at all, more the search of a woman, angry with life as she follows her mother's heteronormative rules. An interesting read of a woman beginning to stand up for herself. A tip: just get through the first couple of pages.

My word, Jaime has a bit of a potty mouth on her, hasn’t she?

I am not sure about my feelings after reading this book. There was a lot of self-discovery on Jaime’s part. We start with her being a flaming heterosexual slut beast (que The Stones’ “I can’t get no-ho sah-tis-fak-shio-hon.”) jumping from one erect member to the next. It does not rock her world at all and she gets kranky about it.

Then she stumbles into this private club House - and while she is not so sure what she is doing there – the patrons think she will fit right in. There she meets Butterfly who awakens a part of her that has been hidden away and denied for very long. So starts Jaime’s (or Bunny as she is called in the club) walk on the wild side.

I thought the wild side was pretty tame. Yes, there were bdsm elements present (ropes, light flogging, a bit of light domination) but nothing over the top. I did not get a real sense of a domme-sub relationship with Bunny and Butterfly either. It was like the shy leading the clueless.

Jaime’s manner was brusque and in your face and it threw me a bit at times. Her mom was the typical bigoted moustache twirling villain in the plot. The writing was okay but it just did not entirely convince me, like it was touching a lot of elements but not touching it enough… if that makes sense?

m/f, f/f explicit
Themes: it was neither fish nor fowl, Jaime’s abrasive speech turned me off a bit, in da club… what was the point of it all really?, mommy is a bigot and daddy is far removed from life, and I was confused about our little shy barista, it did not mash with her alter ego at all.

A surprisingly good read. And quite funny too. I stumbled upon this erotica type book on KU a few days ago. There are plenty of excellent reviews already on Goodreads so I will continue my lazy ways and direct you to those reviews.

There is light BDSM and I’m someone who really isn’t into that type of thing but it is handled very well by the author.

I loved the MCs. With Jaime’s foul mouthed ballsiness and Joss’s kindhearted quietness, it made for a fun yet sweet story. Oh and some yum sex thrown in for good measure.

4.5 stars

Free on KU!!

**I would love to read more from this author but think she is doing more M/F stuff. But if anyone has more info on that, let me know.

3.6 stars. The beginning was a bit off putting for me personally but otherwise a pretty good read. The secondary characters and the whole family drama could've used more depth and I wouldn't mind seeing Butterfly's point of view too. >Not a fan of first person story telling in books<

But the story is fresh and the mains were relatively unique and stand out in the genre. If there were 100 more pages with extra character development I'd rate it a star higher. And was there a point to the slimy coworker? Seemed like a weird intermission between the actual plot. I guess it makes Jaime look stronger. Well what ever. It's a decent read from a new author. I'll look out for her next book for sure.

23/08/2020: I don’t even know where to begin. I’m still very much shook. This book is everything I wanted to read, like WOW!! This is what I call book goals. It’s definitely in my top 5 of best books I’ve ever read!! I legit can’t stop smiling. It had a lot of everything I LOVE in wlw books. Just perfection! Jai and Joss have chemistry for days and the way Joss helps her indirectly is just so beautiful. How Jai explores her feelings and who she really is at the same time as she’s struggling with those same feelings because of her a-hole mother... but focusing on the process, it’s just amazing!
And omg Jai’s best friend, Sadie, is so cute!! Best friend goals!! She was so sweet when Jai came out to her, so supportive. I LOVE HER! And she’s super funny hehe loved that ending in the kitchen xD
But as much as I loved all the steamy scenes and all the others, one of my favorite parts was when Jai stood up to her homophobic mother. That was EPIC!! I was screaming and applauding throughout the whole scene. Jai was simply AMAZING and so so brave!!! I was so proud of her for finally standing up for herself. My fave part was when she said this to her hypocritical mother:
“Your jewelry is a sin. Your poly-cotton blend shirt is a sin, your fucking tattoo that you got in high school is a sin!” she gasps, but I continue on my roll. “You even had sex before marriage…and not “with my father! So do you want to step outside so I can fucking stone you to death?”

THIS PART RIGHT HERE, YOUR HONOR!! F*CKING EPIC!!! I was clapping so hard at 2AM lol I was so proud of her!
Anyways, I’m so in love with these characters and the story. Incredible!! Can’t wait to re-read it again.
Okay, imma stop now, but before I go - I really recommend this book.

26/12/2021 (reread): Just as amazing as I remembered 🥰 I love this book a lot

Great book! I found myself really enjoying Jaime and the way she held her self throughout the book. Joss was the perfect character for her that created the perfect balance for the two.

A good fun read that I highly recommend. In fact would have liked a few more chapters.

Classic case of being told character is XYZ while the writing actually shows the complete opposite. I facepalmed at the scene where Jaime blows up at her "friends" (those poor people) and claims that she never takes out her bad moods on them. The entire book is about her exploding at people who don't deserve that level of overreaction (and who only become jerks once she's rude to them first). I dislike alphahole male characters, and it turns out those personality traits are no more palatable when the alphahole is a woman instead.

This book also refers to breasts as "lady balls". Okay then.

It has been a very long time since I have been so hooked on a book. I couldn't put it down. I was enraptured from the first page and the brutal honesty of the narrator kept me intrigued. It was impossible not to care for each and every character. Despite not being able to relate to the characters exact situation, I was still able to see the deeper meaning and moral to the story. It was truly an eye opener for me - there's nothing like reading for the joy of it and learning at the same time. I highly recommend this book as a must read. A page turner like this is hard to find - this book is truly a treasure!

I found Finding Jaime to be an extremely enjoyable read. I'll admit to being a bit put-off initially by some of the talk about F/M sex, but it was only a minor qualm of mine and it didnt last long. I enjoyed the self-discovery Jaime went through and working through coming out to friends and family, despite to wildly different results.

I really loved all of the scenes that took place in House, especially how adamantly the rule concerning consent to touch was adhered to. I always love how sexy it can be for someone to ask if they can touch you, while simultaneously ensuring consent. Despite the setting, the BDSM elements seemed rather subdued to me and more in the background of everything. While normally I would prefer more... "hardcore" BDSM to be involved, the sexual encounters in the book did not disappoint.

Recommendation:
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it. The story could be briefly summarized as “Young woman discovers herself through unorthodox means with the help of an enigmatic person.” There are small elements of coming-out and family issues, but it mostly deals with the discovery part and the supportive love of friends.

Opinions about the story:
I wasn’t too fond of the main character because it felt weird that her robust demeanor could somehow be affected by her untasteful family. Jaime seems like the type that doesn’t take bullshit from anyone and I mean ANYONE. I can sort of see how she would be tied down by her upbringing because the adolescent age is a very impressionable time growing up no matter how independent one becomes and whatever happens during that time will most likely stick with most people, but still... I questioned Jaime's interaction with her family.

When talking about Jaime’s mentality when she felt betrayed by the person she confided in, I felt that she was a bit too immature. I understand that she was extremely hurt and during that time, humans rarely are rational creatures when under duress, but I couldn’t help myself thinking “Really? … really? You wanna do that and NOT think this through?” I get that she was dealing with two awful events at the same time, but it felt a bit rushed in my opinion.

The softcore BDSM elements in this story was well chosen for introducing newbies who aren’t well verse in that world or are still a bit uncomfortable by it. When Jaime was given a tour around the House, I felt the audience was also getting a sample of it as well. I was a bit nervous towards the end of the story when Jaimie (in her hurtful state) was demanding a person be tied up during a clusterfuck of a time. However, I was promptly relieved when she still asked the participant for permission and kept most of the safety etiquette in check. One of the things that make BDSM so enticing is that participants feel incredibly safe and have complete trust in each other. I was extremely pleased that the author did not disregard that.

Side opinion, I rolled my eyes every time Jaime’s libido started talking. The way it was written seemed a bit juvenile. Butterfly, on the other hand, was sensual as fuck! Jaime’s friends are also fun and very supportive of her.

---SPOILER ALERT AHEAD (Sort of, if you put two and two together, but it could be safe to read.)
I absolutely adored Joss when she was first introduced. There was an air of mystery about her and I’m glad this book was written from Jaime’s POV to keep that mystery. Anytime Jaime observed her, it was a thrill to guess what was up with Joss. When Butterfly was introduced I was going “This… is gonna be good!” The personality difference between Joss and Butterfly was fun to read because there were hints here and there that tied the two together. Then, towards the end, everything came together so beautifully.
---END of SPOILERS---

I was so disappointed when I couldn’t find any more works by P. Dawn. This author is simply fabulous and I hope that they would continue writing and sharing more stories with readers like us!

Jaime has never been true to herself. She suppresses her wants and desires fearing the fall out if the truth were to come out. This all leads to Jaime having empty sexual experiences hoping to finally feel fulfilled.

Things change one night when Jaime happens to come across a secret club named House. The anonymity of the club is essential. All members must wear decorative masks to hide their true identity. The woman who owns the establishment, Madame, allows Jaime free reign of the club for one night. She sees something in Jaime, a need that even Jaime herself hasn't realized yet. Due to the anonymity of the club, Madame nicknames Jaime, Bunny, to help her identify herself to the patrons of the club. As Jaime explores the club, she realizes that there are no inhibitions in this club. It is not a BDSM club but caters more to people who may be afraid to try something they are interested in with their partners or significant others without the fear of judgment or rejection.

Jaime comes across a breathtakingly beautiful woman, who introduces herself as Butterfly. She has found women attractive in the past, but no woman has ever stopped Jaime in her tracks before. She is just mesmerized by Butterfly and can't help but stare at her in awe. From this night on, Jaime begins her self- discovery. She has never been so happy in she can't even remember how long, if ever. She is finally feeling comfortable with herself and she just feels like she's going to burst with all the happiness she's feeling. Just when Jaime is finally ready to admit her feelings and who she really is, she is blind sighted by a secret discovery that has her reeling. She isn't sure if she can recover from this betrayal.

I will admit that this is my first f/f book. The only gay literature that I have read is m/m, which I love. I came into this with an open mind and I must say that I am glad I did. This book was so well written and the character development was spot on. The sex scenes were not overly dramatized, but were sensual and sexy. I enjoyed this book so much, more than I honestly thought I would. This is what I love most about being a reader...I love to be pleasantly surprised. I will definitely be reading more books by P. Dawn.

This book is for a mature audience. P. Dawn has written an amazing story about self discovery. I have read F/F or M/M before but none of them kept my interest very long. Jamie is a single woman who can not find that thing at makes her tick in all the right places. She goes out with her friends and they all try and hook her up with one guy or another but she is not interested. On her way to work she always stop by to see her friends at the coffee shop and mainly to see Joss a friend in her circle that she thinks has a problem with her.

Joss and Jamie went out with their friends and Joss had to leave in a hurry. Jamie went after her to finish a talk that they were having but did see her anywhere. Jamie ended find a secret club. It is a club that people go to find themselves. It is the place that someone maybe able to find what they are looking. Jamie was invited to see the club for one night and if she liked it should could become a member. Jamie was scared but she met a beautiful woman named butterfly and that peaked her interest like nothing else had ever she thought. Will Jamie go back to the club? Will she find what she is looking for? Will she find out what was happening between her and Joss? Pick up a copy of this book and find out.. It is a great read so pick it up.

This book surprised me. The main character who's POV controls the book is initially not likable. In fact I wondered if the book were written by a straight man (and it may have well been) but after only a little while I calmed down. A lot of my discomfort has to do with the way Jaime talked about sex, which felt very crude and very male. But this was a character the author was building and I decided to see her through. I'm glad I did.

Jaime is completely unsatisfied sexually with men and can't figure out why. One night she happens upon a club down an alleyway and ends up at House, a sexual exploration club where everyone wears a mask and uses a pseudonym. There, she is named Bunny by the Madame and has an initial dislike for what she sees, even though she is a bit intrigued. She then meets Butterfly, Madame's daughter, and the two begin to explore their attraction over the next few weeks/months.

Meanwhile, Jaime has begun to admit to an attraction to her friend Josselyn, and it's not too difficult for the reader to figure out early on that Joss is really Butterfly.

All in all, I really liked the book. It kept my interest. I finished it quickly and it was pretty hot. An unusual coming out story, but a good one.

I almost drop it with all the cock talk but I'M SO GLAD I DIDN'T.
OMG I love it.
All the way Jaime getting to know herself, I've been there and I mean, it's so real.
Also, their love is so cute, I fell in love with them, and I really wish we could see more of them together
Also, super hot, I LOVE IT!
I think the way the author wrote it, the love, the sex, the descovery, everything, makes you feel like part of the whole thing.
Can't wait to read more from her.

Well hell! That was some funny reading! I appreciate the way the story get straight to the point without giving a minimum of explanation. Easy story to read and yes, it has steaming sex scenes!

To give you a general idea, this a story about a woman's journey to become who she is meant to be. (I'm very large.) So we follow this Jaime that has no,... but ZERO filter and no shame!

I suggest you to read this book with your brain at OFF position and enjoy.

Wow! I'm Speechless.

Do not be fooled by the book's beginning. I almost stopped reading but am so so very glad I didn't.
P. Dawn did an incredible job of making me fall in love with Jaime. Each new revelation made me care about Jaime even more.
This book has it all, conservative family, the struggle with sexuality, and an incredible sexual connection between two women. I'm not into BDSM, but I can definitely be into what The House provides.
Oh how I wish The House and my own Butterfly were real.

3,35/5 Not bad
this a friends-lovers kinda book, they knew each other for one year but the interaction between them was always awkward.
Soon our mc finds herself in club with BSDM ,an there she finds hooked on this woman who really looks like her ,,friend'' but her personality it's very different.
This book has some smut, but it think my favourite one was the least spicy scene, because even tho i couldn't feel the chemistry more than half the book ,there i could fucking breathe it.
I would recommend this book probably just for that scene.

Absolutely LOVED this story!

This was so wonderful. It's well-written, first of all, but it tackles so many issues: self-discovery, trust, honesty... not to mention the BDSM world and all that it entails. Knowing what was going to happen didn't prevent me from stopping, as it's definitely more of a journey story, but it was an awesome journey to take. I highly recommend this book.

Jamie, despite her brash and shallow introduction is a multilayered young woman of unexpected depth. Her gang of friends are vivid and provide a great foundation for Jamie’s story to be told. Her mystery woman is just right. Couldn’t put it down!
