Roxie and Mark have been together for a year and when he proposes, Roxie is on cloud nine. Roxie could not have wished for a better man to spend her life with. The next step is meeting the in-laws which makes Roxie happy, but also anxious. On the way to meet family Wright, Mark says that his parent's don't actually know about her and it's going to be a surprise. When they arrive at Mark's parents' place, things don't go very smoothly, Mark's mom is rather cold towards Roxie and she had completely other plans for her son's arrival. Roxie is ready to suffer though one night and then go back home, but when a sudden snowstorm locks them into the house together, things will get more and more heated. If to add Mark's ex girlfriend and various family secrets into the mix, what will come out of it?

It was a very enjoyable book with lots of laugh out loud moments. I liked the whole story from chapter one, when Roxie and Mark met, which was one of my favorite parts along with all those funny scenes. If you want something funny and lighthearted, don't hesitate to pick this book up.

Sadly, this was not my cup of tea. It had some fun part. But the ending was a little bit odd and felt unfinished. And the characters wasn't as fun as MacIntosh other works.

However, I'll would suggest give it a try if one love MacIntosh's works. She is an author with a fun and engaging way of writing.

This book is funny at places and generally well-written. But I found Roxy so silly and shallow that I almost sympathised with her 'evil mother-in-law' for trying to get rid of her.

Hilarious book about being snowed in with your future in-laws, on your first meeting with them, over the Christmas period!

Roxie is amazed when her boyfriend of a year Mark, proposes one evening, but is delighted, for theirs has been a fairytale romance up until this point, plus Roxie has been able to get great mileage out of their relationship for her column at the magazine she works for.

A couple of days before Christmas they decide they had better break the good news to both sets of parents. Roxie's family are delighted as you would imagine, and all that is left is the trip up to a small Yorkshire village, to tell Mark's family.

Only one small, teeny tiny problem, they have never met Roxie, they aren't expecting Mark to show up with anyone, and they definitely weren't expecting an engagement announcement. And the bad weather warnings are key too!

Mark's family are so over the top not overly pleasant to Roxie that as the fly on the wall reader, all I could do is laugh at them. None of them are particularly evil or anything, perhaps with the exception of one guest they have staying with them, but none are overly welcoming either.

There are many laugh out loud moments in this book, some of Roxie's attempts at seduction are memorable, and some are down right disturbing. If you have ever had to spend extended time with your in-laws you may be able to relate well to what Roxie is going through.

It's Not You, It's Them, is firstly a rather apt expression for the feelings of Roxie, but not only that its a fantastically entertaining story that shows people at their worst over the holidays, with a series of mishaps and misunderstandings, which will ultimately show just how human some people can be.

There are many classic scenes including some drinks being spiked, a Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle outfit, a mermaid dress, a broken bed and also a great game of Truth or Dare, oh and the hunky soldiers are great too. Basically lots and lots of laughs and smiles, in this wonderfully light hearted story about potential in-laws.

Thank you so much to HQ and Netgalley for my copy of the book. This was my honest opinion.

I always enjoy Portia's Books this one.... Well i have to say Roxie keeps a level head longer than i would.....

I get trying to get on with the inlaws for the sake of your Significant other - but to snub you, insult your job, invite the ex to stay then once down the pub dress you down..... Well i wanted to jump in the Pages and slap Mark too....

If i was Roxie i would have enclosed myself in the library/study and have a good reading session and wait out the snow and let them get on with it.....

I was so angry at the family for the way they treated her and how mark ignored how she was being treated.

thats not to say it wasnt well written and moreish and i read it in one day, but im still angry HAHAHA

I loved this book! It could be that having the family of the man you’re head over heels in love with not loving you as much resonated 😉 but genuinely it was joyous and silly and fun!

Wow! I thought that Portia had set the bar high with her previous book, ‘Truth Or Date’! I was rather apprehensive (yet very excited) about Portia’s newest book because I loved her previous one so much, I was hoping this one would be similar in writing style and wouldn’t disappoint. SQUEAL! It was similar yet even better than her previous book! I didn’t even think that was possible (it was fab fyi).
Roxie has met her Prince Charming, her one and only, the man of her dreams (you catch my drift) with Mark Wright. Where Roxie is concerned, he most certainly lives up to his last name (even though I’m sure a lot of you will be thinking TOWIE!). The happy couple is living in their own loved up bubble and are pretty certain that nothing will come along to burst their bubble. Well, certainty isn’t guaranteed really is it? Especially when the time has come…to push the button….of her boyfriends parents house! Dun dun dunnnnnnnn!!!
I snlaughed by the end of the first page, no joke. I am however, starting to wonder what goes through Portia’s mind given the fact she can reduce someone to tears of laughter in a few sentences. Genius.
Roxie and Mark’s relationship is fuelled by their love of Ann Summers…and some, as well as being super lovey dovey. I honestly thought that I would find it too sickly sweet, but Portia’s incredible one liners ensured that I wasn’t shouting at the book to ‘get a room!’. I did feel quite sorry for Roxie many times throughout the book due to the way that she was being treated, but then Portia being Portia, ended up making me laugh whilst Roxie was feeling sad! I’m not mean, honestly! It was just incredibly hard NOT to laugh during this book as every single thing was followed by hints of sarcasm or the odd innuendo. Despite that, the book was an honest representation of what meeting the parents can be like, from a female point of view.
I am actually laughing right now as I write this! When the storyline concentrates on the events with Mark’s family, actions spoke far louder than words and Mark’s family seemed to be making a name for themselves. An unpleasant name. Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t evil, they were just damn right rude, especially when Mark played into their hands! The way that Roxie handled herself in those particular situations spoke volumes. She was just being herself yet showing the readers that things like that do actually happen when you go and meet the parents. Well, not all of the antics that Roxie engaged in, I’m sure..
I had no idea whether Mark and Roxie’s relationship would stand the test of time, especially given the fact that Roxie felt like seducing her boyfriend in his parents house, multiple times! Absolutely hilarious, cringey and just….hilarious. Disturbing too, but as I said above, I wonder what goes through the author’s head! Oh to be able to mind read!! It is quite possible that many readers may be able to pick up some tips from this book! If you do, please don’t tell me about them haha!
Portia writes such brilliant, engaging and truly hilarious novels, I never want them to end once I start reading. ‘It’s Not You, It’s Them’ has got to be my favourite book Ms.MacIntosh has written because of the genius one liners, fabulous storyline and on point situations. Honestly. I absolutely LOVED reading this book, everything was perfect. My sort of book from start to finish, Portia MacIntosh has delivered yet again, if she doesn’t get an award for this and her humour I will be stunned. It’s Not You, It’s Them has found its way into my Top 5 books of all time and I cannot recommend this book enough. You HAVE to read it.
Thank you LRR, Portia and HQ!

A riotously funny romp that will have you laughing out loud, fans of Sophie Kinsella and Paige Toon are going to adore Portia Macintosh‘s latest novel, It’s Not You, It’s Them!

Lifestyle writer Roxie Pratt was more used to kissing frogs than being swept off her feet by Prince Charming, but all that changed when she clapped eyes on kind, intelligent and drop dead gorgeous Mark Wright. Looking like he’s just stepped out of one of her romantic fantasies, Roxie couldn’t believe her luck when the sinfully sexy Mark had then asked her out on a date. An intense relationship had soon developed and Roxie had been over the moon when Mark had got down on one knee and proposed to her! Her fairy tale romance was going to have the happy ending she had always dreamed about. But Roxie had counted on one factor that could make or break her relationship: Mark’s family!

When Mark takes her to meet the family for Christmas, Roxie is absolutely sure they are going to love her. After all, everything had gone off without a hitch and Roxie is positive that nothing could spoil her happiness – until she meets her prospective in-laws. Mark’s parents weren’t expecting him to turn up with anyone and their reaction towards Roxie is anything but welcome. Frosty does not even begin to describe how they greet her – and to make matters worse it looks like she is going to be snowed in for the holidays with them!

Is Roxie about to have the worst Christmas ever? Will she ever manage to win over her in-laws? And could their less than enthusiastic welcome end up spelling the end for Roxie and Mark’s relationship?

Portia MacIntosh’s It’s Not You, It’s Them should come with a warning: do not read this book in public because you will be snorting with laughter on many an occasion! Hilarious, heartwarming and absolutely impossible to resist, this irreverent and engrossing romantic comedy is so hard to put down that once you read the first sentence, you will find yourself unable and unwilling to do anything else but read on.

I adored Roxie: she was a fun, feisty and intelligent heroine you cannot help but root for and she’s the kind of girl you’d love to have as a best friend. The book is also packed with a great cast of supporting characters you will love and hate in equal measures and anyone who has ever had in-laws is sure to recognise and relate to some of the things that happen in the book.

A wonderful read from an exciting voice in women’s fiction, It’s Not You, It’s Them ticks all the right boxes!

I wasn't entirely convinced by the heroine of our book and her overweening desire to be adored by her fiances parents. I get that it's stressful meeting the other halves family for the first time but you aren't going to be spending the rest of your life with them - if you get on bonus if you don't just grit your teeth and get through the family functions. For some reason though she is almost pathological about them liking her. Obviously, as is the way with thios genre, this leads to a myriad of misunderstandings before all coming right in the end.

There is some humour to be found in the situation; sadly it comes at the expense of characters getting very, very drunk. Maybe I am just getting out of touch with the world but the scenarios depicted all seemed to go just that little bit too far to make them feel relatable to real life. The characters really don't have much character to them and are just names on a page - perhaps the best evidence of this is the fact I cannot remember a single character name a week after finishing the book.

That said I have marked this down as a 3 Star read in my notebook. Seems strange when you read what I have to say about it doesn't it. Simply put the writing is very strong and does keep you engaged even though you couldn't care less about the people or the situations they are in. Ms McIntosh can tell a tale and even if it's component parts aren't your bag the telling of it keeps your interest.

Unfortunately the first time Portia got on the wrong side of the fine line between humour and cringe

I started this novel expecting Portia's trademark laugh-out-loud, snappy, and giggly humour, which is exactly what I got, until the MCs go to meet his family for a Christmas Eve overnighter, without Mark telling them that he was bringing his fiancée Roxie with him.
Not that they knew that he was engaged and had invited his ex-girlfriend in an attempt to get Mark back together again.
My very British sense of humour vanished as, singly and as a group, they were not exactly subtle in their oh so British viscious comments to her, or near enough for her to hear.
Even Mark lost his loving attitude, as Roxie tried to tell him what was going on and how she felt due, it seemed, to him defending his beloved family.
After dragging this uncomfortable situation on for two-thirds of the book, the kiss-and-make-up scene, complete with a promised future HEA, was squashed into the last couple of pages.
This is the first time that I have ever found a novel by Portia to be so cringeworthy, but I read on to see how much of a wreck it could become, in the same way that motorists slow down automatically to see how bad a car crash on a road is.
It is also the first time that I have given Portia less than 4 stars...

What I read: It’s Not You, It’s Them by Portia MacIntosh

Why I picked it up: I read something by her a few weeks ago and downloaded all of her available books on Libby.

How I read it: On Kindle in an evening and a morning.

What it’s about: Roxie and Mark get engaged, and now it’s time to meet his family. Except his family is still really set on him getting back together with his childhood sweetheart, Bea. Being snowed in doesn’t help the situation much – but neither does Roxie’s tendency to speak before she thinks or write about her life for all of the internet to see.

What I liked: There were some moments when Roxie was definitely in the right and being really manipulated and put down by her future in laws, but…

What I disliked: There were also a few times when she was ridiculous, and she really took things in the wrong context, expecting them to just bow to her glory without putting any effort into the relationship.

Genre: Family saga, closed door romance, rom com.

Rating & Recommendation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and maybe, not the most “laugh out loud rom com I’ve ever read” but not awful (ringing endorsement).

I’m really enjoying Portia’s books. They are funny and lovely. You can notice how Roxie and Mark have a great chemistry and they really love each other. So when they decide to pay a surprise visit to her future-in-laws things go very wrong in every way. His family aren’t very welcoming with her plus there is a surprise visitor that wants to take Mark out of Roxie’s heart.

I loved this book, it made laugh so much. And I really felt in love with Roxie and Mark. They are so perfect for each other.

Although I kinda feel disappointed that Portia always resolve her book’s plot very easily and quickly. And even if this book had an Epilogue, it wasn’t enough for me. I really wanted to see Mark and Roxie wedding or her relationship with her in-laws one year after the ending.

Even thought I really enjoyed this book. I recommend to everyone who wants to read something light, funny, romantic but with a great story. I will continue with the next books of this author because they are really helping me with my reader block.

I can't say that this is a bad book, but I read better by MacIntosh. Let's say that Roxie and Mark can't be my favorite MacIntosh couple.

Roxie and Mark are the perfect couple, as so they believe. It all changes when Mark takes Roxie to meet his parents. The trip is supposed to be for one night only, but they get snowed in and can't leave. Mark's parents don't really like Roxy, and Mark's ex-girlfriend is snowed in with the rest of the family.

Oh, joy.

I am not saying this wasn't entertaining. It sure had its funny moments. But, when Roxie and Mark almost broke up because of the way Mark's family treats Roxie, there were also some annoying moments.

The first thing Roxie thought of to solve any problem was to have sex, which is fine for some problems, but others require some healthy communication, in my opinion. As for Mark, as long as he was around his family, he was quick to judge Roxy and believe his family, mainly his mother over Roxie.

In short, decent enough entertainment, but can't be a favorite of mine.

*Book provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

I always reach for a Portia MacIntosh book, when I0m in the mood for something fun and exciting, because her writing is exactly that.

This story follows Roxie Pratt, who is newly engaged to Mark and a talented writer. Being engaged to Mark also means finally meeting his parents and family.

Well, that’s when all the drama and trouble starts, because first of all, they don’t know Mark is taking Roxie with him. By chance (or maybe not) his ex Bea is there as well and a big snow storm leaves them all in the house for a few days.

Mark’s family is very special. His dad might be gay, one of his sister’s boyfriend is a pervert and then there is also some cheating going on (not with Mark and Roxie though). The family and the way they all act with Roxie is really hard on her and she slowly starts doubting her relationship with Mark, which is a pity, because they are so awesome together.

They had great chemistry from the start and I think they have a wonderful connection. I love their scenes.

The book is very funny, fresh, vivid and entertaining! At times certain things were a bit too much for me, they just didn’t seem authentic anymore and I also questioned some of the decisions the characters made. That’s the reason we I take away half a point and give it a 4.5 rating. I got hooked immediately and fell in love with Portia’s writing once again.

4.5/5

Outrageously funny, exceptionally charming, and adorably romantic!

This novel is a hilarious journey to “meet the family”, complete with a meddling mother, conniving ex, eccentric father, and whimsical cousin.

The writing is smooth and effortless. The plot is clever, humorous, flirty, and a barrel full of laughs, romps, embarrassing moments, awkward situations, and entertaining hijinks. And the characters are affable, quirky, self reflective, and genuine.

It’s not often as a book lover that I read a book and wish I could see it as a movie, but this book I can honestly say I think would be a great rom com. It’s definitely got that perfect combination of humour and heart.

Roxie Pratt
Mark Wright

Roxie meets Mark and he sweeps her off her feet. After a year of dating and Mark popping the question and her yes they head out to meet his family in the north who up until this point Roxie has only heard about. Roxie finds out on the trip that Mark hasn’t told his parents he’s bringing her, she is stressed. There are all kinds of antics once they get there, including a snow storm that strands them through the holidays. I liked Roxie and Mark, they learn more about each other on the trip. The family was interesting, Mark’s ex shows up and has been invited to stay. You find out about each of the family members. I thought this book went on too long. I started to get tired of all the antics. I did finish the book and Have/would read other books by this author.

Another brilliant read from Portia!

Roxie thinks she's got the perfect relationship with Mark... Until she has to meet his family.

Imagine all of the worst possible scenarios that could happen if you had to meet your fiance's family for the first time....they're all in this book!

The harder Roxie tries to bond with them, the more she seems to alienate herself, and being snowed in inside their freezing cold mansion doesn't really help. As they wait for the snow to thaw, Roxie has to decide whether she and Mark are actually such a good fit after all.

A brilliant read that moves along at a fast pace, with humour, spicy scenes and plenty of laughs! Would recommend!

Not a bad book, but not as good as some of Portia MacIntosh's other books. I found the story slow and hard to get into. The characters were not easy to like, and the main heroine of the piece, Roxie, hard to understand.
One minute she is being portrayed as a strong, independent, feminist woman, next she is being bullied by her fiancé, Mark's family, and struggling to have her voice heard.
Unlike most of Portia's books, I can read them pretty much in one go. Not this one.
I am looking forward to reading more of her works though, because I do love her writing.

Roxie you made me smile so big. Honestly this one was funny in ways I didn’t see coming, Roxie is just so much fun, and sometimes that’s the problem, but if Im honest, I wouldn’t have been happy in her place, being the surprise guest is bad enough, but when you find out about the plot, when that’s just even more awkward. I think the article did the best bit, as it held up a mirror, but sometimes that’s not what’s needed. I would happily read her articles, like I would happily devour anything this author produces.

It's one of the fairy tale meet-cute story of a boy and a girl then fell in love. It's funny and somewhat unexpected.
I like Roxie's character as how she stands out as a woman and herself. I like how Mark loves her and his self as well.
However, the ending seems off and unfinished or unresolved. Like, a lot was going on, then bam! You are reading the It's not you, it's them article and that's it.
I just feel that it can be more 😊

2.5 stars so I rounded up. I just can’t get into books with unlikable characters. Mark is a snore. Roxie is way too self absorbed along with being self deprecating. I think this book tried too hard to be funny and turned out annoying and predictable. It may make a funny screen adaptation but the only good thing about this book is that it is short.

Sometimes it is you, too

Our main character, Roxie, has some anger nosiness, and major worrying issues. . . . as we all sometimes do at times. When she can remember where she is, what belongs where, not to try so hard, stuff can work out. . . But does she do that?

2.5 rounded up. I laughed the whole way through Honeymoon for One and simply loved it. I also really enjoyed The Plus One Pact. But this book truly felt like it was written by a different author. Definitely not funny like her others, and wasn’t a story I could get into.

It took me ages to finish this book, I just couldn’t get into properly and the ending was disappointing too. I feel like it was unfinished.

I love Portia MacIntosh’s style of writing but unfortunately this one didn’t capture me as much as other stories by her have done.

Brilliant read

Loved this the first time I read it, and again this second time. The characters are believable, real. This one resonated with me, the whole 'being accepted by his family' - my first MIL was never accepting of me.
