Sempre interessante leggere DanMachi.

The fifth volume of the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon did three things very well. It expanded characterization and back stories for our heroes, it began to introduce the sinister nature of the dungeon that will slowly take on more importance in later books, and it told a thrilling story.

For those who have seen the anime based on these novels, the fifth volume is the final story arc of the season, encompassing episodes 10-13. It has the battle with the Irregular floor boss, the Black Goliath and the revelations about Bell. As well about Lyu and hints about the dungeon.

I loved that above all else, the expanded back-stories of characters. Certain facts and notions we aren't given or are glossed over in the anime are fleshed out more here. And through this we learn that Bell is a true hero in saving his enemies who are even worse in the book until they have their heel-face turns.

I loved the sweet romance of Bell and Aiz, the hilarity of the Amazon twins Tione and Tiona, and the bond of Bell with his friends.

I preferred the anime's ending, which I think took the beginning of volume six before the plot went into high gear to give a nice ending. But this book, though the ending was too abrupt to lead into the next volume, was otherwise a great story and installment in the series.

A true dungeon crawl in this volume. Basically, the entire volume is set within the Dungeon. This is great for adventure, for world building, and for team-character moments. Comparing it to the anime, this covers the final few episodes of season 1.

*****

Beware of Spoilers!

*********

First, I want to highlight a particular section in the early parts. It is when Bell's party is subjected to a "pass parade" by another Familia. A "pass parade" is when one adventuring party kites a monster mob into another party in order to escape said mob, thus putting the second party into danger, especially if they were already fighting monsters. The light novel makes a much bigger deal about it than the anime, a matter of life and death rather than a breach of dungeon etiquette (maybe that's the MMORPG talking).

The tension that follows is more sustained in the light novel as well. In the anime, we don't get a sense of just how desperate the situation is, and just how long it takes Bell's party to reach the safe zone in the 18th floor. In this light novel, we see just how close they come to wearing out and giving in.

We see the true value of supporters, as Lilly brings out an item to ward away monsters. We see perspectives from different characters, even a harrowing glimpse into Welf's mind as he gives up on life. Exhaustion comes closer to defeating Bell than any previous foe.

The world building picks up here as well. The middle levels are where higher-level adventures go. It's a whole different experience from the upper levels. Differences in equipment, tactics and survival all come up. Then there's the economics of the town in the safe zone. The phrase "water in a desert is worth any price" comes to mind. The idea of Familia crests being used for credit is an interesting idea, and one can only assume that monsters don't like the smell of perfume.

If I had to critique something, then it would be an event in the climax, where Bell uses Argonaut on the Goliath, fails to kill it and is able to try again shortly afterward. Argonaut is supposed to exhaust Bell to the point of uselessness, right? Trying again soon after cheapens that for me but, on the other hand, it only happens after Hermes does a morale boost based on a memory crucial to Bell's identity and dream to be a hero, and this unlocks a new skill for Bell called "Limit Release". Given all the prior build-up of Hermes testing Bell, it seems as though Hermes wanted to see if Bell had what it takes to push past his limits, and keep going even if, logically, he shouldn't be able to. Given the mechanics of this 'verse, I'm willing to give it a pass. Besides, it is a cool-set up and execution, where other characters can shine as well.

A lot happens in this book, and is where the first season of the anime ends.

This book amps up the fact that the characters can die in the dungeon, and the very real threat of possibly getting cut off from returning back to the surface. What I thought was interesting is that the use of another party as a distraction to aggro monsters is show here in just how terrifying it would be in a real world scenario.

The other party's reactions to Bell and his speedy rise to power was also interesting. It made sense, and worked well in the story and helped to progress the plot. It also creates a bit of a mystery as to why the gods are so interested in Bell and what he can achieve. Where most light novels are slowing down at this point, it feels like this one is just amping up to something more exciting and interesting.

There is also the mystery as to why the gods can't go into the dungeon and what happens if they do. Like the above mysteries, this one leaves the readers wondering why this is the case and leaves them hoping it will be explained in the future.

All in all, I enjoyed this novel. There was a lot in it, there was a lot on the line and you could feel it in the story. The risks are high, and everything is handled in a realistic (for a fantasy) manner. The fight scenes are done well, and as things escalate, you get a very good sense of what the author is trying to convey, and it feels very 'anime', without being cheesy or goofy.

I am enjoying this series and recommend it to anyone looking for a light novel fantasy series.

Pretty darn good. If you've seen the anime, you know what's going to happen, but you're missing out on a lot of little details that make the story even more interesting. If you haven't watched the anime but have been following the light novels, good on you! There is much to be had here with a lot of intertwined characters and stories, details of backgrounds, the dungeon and even some of the why things are the way they are.

If I had one criticism (and I haven't read book 6 so maybe it is addressed) but the leveling system seems totally and utterly inconsistent. The excelia for doing what was done during the climax of the book seems like it should have leveled a number of characters, including Bell. Aside from that -- love the Danmachi series and the side story, Sword Oratoria.

Verdict: If you were on the fence because volume 4 wasn't your favorite, pick this one up for sure. If you were okay with volume 4, this one is even better so RUN and grab it.

This volume gives us yet another side of the world Bell is living in. While we as readers know going into the dungeon is not a safe job this time we see another dark side of it. So even though the story starts out happy and hopeful after Bell reaching level 2 and taking another step deeper into the dungeon the story and situation becomes darker and bleaker the farther along you go. Making this a good read that is quite action packed while still maintaining the ability for other characters to make growth strength wise and on an more emotional level.

This story followed the anime perfectly. I always wondered where the large sword that Bell used came from. After seeing the spinoff anime Sword Oratoria, I learned it came from Aiz beating a boss. I re-watched the Danmachi episode and I saw the Loki symbol on the bag holding the sword. So that was a nice touch. Now I am caught up on the anime and I will read the next book moving the story forward.

Great comeback.

After an almost disappointing 4 book in the serie, the author came back with a really good book. Is a shame that the translation, lot of typos and spelling problems give the sensation that the editorial house didn't pay too much attention at details when releasing this book.

Well this was interesting. This book has illuminated two interesting things that not shown in the anime, or at least when it comes to that massive sword Bell uses to take out the Goliath, just not explained. But Lyu has a character arc in this book concerning Bell directly which I enjoyed, especially because doesn't add to rabble of women after him, which is quite refreshing!

The end has come to the animated part of this series. This book has the spectacular battle from the eighteenth floor.

We see a lot of action in this book as well as the epilogue set up for the next one.

Bell comes into his own in the last battle. He doesn't retreat and he doesn't run away when the situation looks hopeless.

A good book.

Great story!!! Just needs editing.

Yet again, the character development, plot, and pacing of this story takes my breath away. The only complaint I have, yet again, is it needs a thorough editing; I saw tense shifts, a lot of grammatically incorrect sentences, and strings of phrases that didn’t make much sense.

In this book bells growth is incredible and his new skills are showed on full display! His training from aiz is how he survives and you are on edge the whole time wondering if his party will make it alive! My favorite books in this series happen in the dungeon Amori can write the best battle scenes that seem to take 5 minuites to read but really you have read 100 pages and it flies by!

Predictable, cliche filled, but...

The imagery overpowers the drawbacks and leaves you with good feels as you imagine the action. I ended the book with a smile.

Funnily, I am of two minds? There were parts I really enjoyed. There's a real sense of stake and horror in the early parts, it's great. And then the middle parts are just plain fun and enjoyable, a release of stress, so to speak. But then the end... the end... It's awesome in some ways, but it runs into the protagonist. Which is a personal problem. I get the feeling that the earlier books in the series poisoned me against him and I could have enjoyed the fights and the emotional payoffs better, if not perfectly.

The author had slightly better justifications for things, and the hints of bigger, more important plots. You just have to be okay with two fundamental pillars of his storytelling and arcs. Namely, this guy is a hero above all others... because, I guess. And Heroes just... matter more. If you can deal with that, it's a good book.

Book 5 finds Bell and his party stranded in the middle floors after another party strands them there. And this is only the start of their problems!
I had been anxious waiting for the book 5 release for while so easily ended up finishing this book in a few hours. Whilst the storyline wasn't unknown to me having watched the anime, the book is still much better.
Book 5 sees quite a bit of side character development, as well as a few more characters that are now being thrown into the mix to spice things up.
To say that I'm keen for the next book is an understatement with how the novel finished up. This has to be my favourite light novel series.
