Geek Pack #1

Alpha Coder

Rate this book
As the second son, Liam Reed never expected to be a werewolf Alpha. He preferred to develop software for Soft Corp, but when his brother Jason died in a car accident, their father forced Liam to assume leadership of the pack. Liam plans to govern with compassion, instead of ruling through fear, but pack member Bradley Karr undermines Liam’s leadership, biding his time before challenging for Alpha. Tired of pack politics, all Liam wants is to program and find his mate, but he fears that neither is in his future.

When his mate, werewolf Cody Jones, starts working at Soft Corp as Liam’s intern, sparks fly. However, a relationship with Cody could get them both fired for fraternization. And, that's not the worst problem. Cody doesn’t seem to accept Liam as his mate.

Liam’s only chance at happiness is to win Cody over while keeping their relationship a secret. But really, Cody would never stay with an introverted geek like him, an ineffectual Alpha failing to live up to his brother’s legacy. Would he?

Kathryn Sparrow has had stories spinning around in her head her whole life and finally decided it was time to write them down. After working twenty years in the Software Industry, she has left the engineering world to be a chauffeur mom (because she doesn't really get to stay-at-home.) She lives with her fantastic, geek husband and her two adorable, sometimes infuriating daughters, who are too smart for their Mommy’s own good. If she had spare time she would spend it knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, and doing any other handicrafts that catch her fancy.

I read this because... geeky Alpha! I want to see how hot and powerful this Alpha wolf could be.
Alas... Let's just say I found Liam wanting though not due to his being a geek. I also didn't feel his chemistry with Cody (shocked at finding their mate male aside, they seemed to have no problems whatsoever on newly discovered sexual act matters between men). The only believable aspects that these two were meant for each other was because it's fated in their werewolves universe. >,<

Not to mention the cliché that challenger to Alpha position had to a nefarious jerk; a seemingly gold-digger ex girlfriend or an aggressive potential girlfriend (that both main characters - Cody and Liam - managed to get close to such females was questionable quality for sure, imho), and too nosy colleagues and roomies all around.

“‘I can’t count the number of times yesterday that I wanted to kick everyone out, throw you on the ground, and show you how much I need you.’”

3 shifter stars!

Liam is a software developer for Soft Corp, but since his brother died, Liam’s father wants him to assume leadership over their wolf pack. You see Liam is an alpha wolf. This is the last thing Liam wants, but has decided to rule the pack with less fear and more compassion. And while doing this, he’s desperately on the search for his mate, but he’s starting to think this will never happen. Cody starts working at Soft Corp as Liam’s intern and immediately he’s hooked. But there’s two problems…. One is they can’t date while working together and second, Cody doesn’t seem interested in being Liam’s mate. Can Liam get Cody to see that they belong together?

This book was an okay read, it wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t my favorite. There were times that Liam upset me with his down on his luck demeanor… and his second guessing everything. I loved Cody, he was perfect, I just think Liam needed to man up, I guess. Overall the story was interesting and fun to read.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for a Wicked Reads~~

This is a great combination of Werewolf, MM and computer geek romance. It is also the first of a series, but there wasn't too much background creating.

I can only imagine the surprise when a Werewolf discovers that his fated mate is a man, when he has always had girlfriends before. But such is the pull that these two men cannot help but form a strong bond, even when it seems difficult to fathom. As a reluctant Alpha, Liam has a lot on his hands already, and through the story the twists and turns continue to multiply. I found the plot to flow well, and actions to be realistic and appropriate. I liked how the two men were together, and that they were patient and diffident, but bowed to the inevitable at the same time. At some points there may have been rather a lot of names to keep in order, but it soon became clear.

Good start to a new series. Thank you Ms Sparrow

Geek Pack 1: Alpha Coder by Kathryn Sparrow gives a delicious new twist to the classic alpha werewolf story. I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for the next book in this series.

There’s only ever been one thing that Liam Reed has cared about and that’s writing code. He never wanted, nor expected, to be alpha of his pack but after his brother’s death that’s what happened.

Of course, he isn’t the only one unhappy about his new elevation in the pack.

Now Liam’s trying to hold together his pack without resorting to the violence everyone seems to expect of him. His task is made a smidge harder when he realizes that his new male intern is his mate.

Such unrealized potential in this one. Two men who've never been interested in other men but realize they're mates. Yep, man-sex virgins. Don't get all excited now, the sex was blah. No fun exploring and no mate-crazy sniffing or hotness. Boo hoo. I can't really explain why but the entire story just didn't do anything special for me. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't anything fun like I was expecting. Geeky alpha, hot younger mate...so much potential. His geekiness wasn't even that geeky! I'm bummed. :(

it was an okay book. Liam is a geeky werewolf who is socially inept, smacks of being neurodivergent. Cody is an intern at Liam's company and also a werewolf. Both men are straight but find that they are mates. Instalove, lust, and suddenly they are okay with being attracted to each other. There's a villian and his henchmen in the story, some not obtuse women and a lot of "i'm not as good as my brother" in this book.

I honestly enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. It was a lot more than just a simple wolf meets fated mate, is shocked that they’re male, struggles for a bit, then lives happily ever after. I liked that the homophobia was not a huge plot point, just a tiny blip, just more of a struggle of “well, you’re going to need heirs, let’s call the surrogates!” The women in the story were seriously insufferable, which was annoying, but still not the main villains.

Just an ok read. Two computer programming geeks realize they are fated mates. Things were kinda predictable. But it was interesting near the end during Cody’s college fencing match.

Pretty sure this is my first book by this author and over all I enjoyed it. Nothing to knock my socks off, but I nice read while flying.
Even though Liam became alpha by default, and never groomed when push comes to shove he manages to take care of business. But he is not your Man’s Man’s Alpha but as the blurb suggests he’s not supposed to be and it was refreshing to read one with struggles. That actually needed help and with his mate, coaching, encouragement. Learned to grow and develop.
Cody even though young, and not ready for all the mate thing, seems to take everything in stride and is a great compliment to Laim.
It’s a good start and I hope to see more from Laim and Cody, maybe when they decide to have that baby? (not mpreg)

The story might have been a little bland on a romantic level, but all in all it was quite an enjoyable read. It did suffer from an acute case of bi-erasing GFY, but watching those two guys determinedly work out how a M/M relationship and M/M sex work was quite fun. And they did act and talk like actual bona fide geeks :) I just wish the two most prominent female characters weren't .

3.0 stars. this sadly wasn't doing it for me. it wasn't bad or awful but it wasn't great either. I did however like the main characters simply for their simplicity. that is all I have to say.

2.5 stars rounded up - it's okay, but I was less than impressed. It had great potential, but it was never fully realized.
