Inventing a Tinker: Short story prequel

Rate this book
Before you dive into the best-selling Mad Tinker Chronicles, see what inspired the rebellion, and learn why the side with Twinborn always has the advantage...

Connect the gears of a clock and it tells time. Connect the gears of a tinker, and it’s time for a reckoning.

Cadmus Errol is an apprentice clockmaker rankling under the tutelage of a master he has already surpassed. He has dreams of greater things, but too much patience for his own good. When Jennai steps into his life, she derails the track his life was stuck on. Together, they find a purpose, a crusade. She introduces him to a whole new world, and it needs a Mad Tinker, not a clockmaker.

I am a creator of worlds and a destroyer of words. As a fantasy writer, my works range from traditional epics to futuristic fantasy with starships. I have worked as an unpaid Little League pitcher, a cashier, a student library aide, a factory grunt, a cubicle drone, and an engineer--there is some overlap in the last two.

Through it all, though, I was always a storyteller. Eventually I started writing books based on the stray stories in my head, and people kept telling me to write more of them. Now, that's all I do for a living.

I enjoy strategy, worldbuilding, and the fantasy author's privilege to make up words. I am a gamer, a joker, and a thinker of sideways thoughts. But I don't dance, can't sing, and my best artistic efforts fall short of your average notebook doodle. When you read my books, you are seeing me at my best.

My ultimate goal is to be both clever and right at the same time. I have it on good authority that I have yet to achieve it.

Inventing a Tinker
A Short Story Prequel
Mad Tinker Chronicles
By J.S. Moran

Rating 4.0

This is a short short story as a prequel to the Mad Tinker Chronicles. I was intrigued from the very beginning with Cadmus and I was captured with the presence of Jannai. Obviously, something was amidst and poor oblivious Cadmus had absolutely no clue what was going on; but then in all fairness, neither did I. The author very quickly and skillfully developed parallel worlds where in one humans lead their lives much like today while in the other they are enslaved. This little story morsel only made me hungry for more. The best part? This is a great series to share with my 10 year old granddaughter.

I wish I had read this earlier because now I understand "Twinborn". Very interesting concept. Lots of short stories and novels in this world.

Inventing a Tinker by J. S. Morin is an excellent steampunk fantasy that will keep you reading from start to finish. It is fast paced and exciting.

The author has done a great job of setting the stage for his series, The Mad Tinker Chronicles, in this short story about a clockmaker and his adventures. The story was well written and fun to read.

I liked J. S. Morin's characters and found them easy to follow. They were both believable and interesting.

I enjoyed reading Inventing a Tinker by J. S. Morin and recommend this book to all readers.

Interesting prequel

This does what a prequel should do. It establishes a major character, it establishes the world, and it leaves enough wonder in your mind to continue reading the series. The idea behind the twin born is interesting enough to invest time in least the first complete novel of the series. Definitely worth the time to read for a free prequel. The best way to test the waters of a new series.

Good read

This was a good little read just a taste of the series and from what I have read so far it sounds pretty good. It's about people who live in a parallel universe one where humans are like today and then the other they are like slaves and pet's. I have to read another one in the series to really see how it goes but so far it's a good read.

Inventing a Tinker

One of the best short stories I have read.. There is much that is original in this short work to me, I am an ex techie which I have grown too old to keep up with world. But it is still fun to go for a dip once in a while.
