These best-selling texts differ from CALCULUS, FOURTH EDITION in that the exponential and logarithmic functions are covered earlier. In the Fourth Edition CALCULUS, EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS these functions are introduced in the first chapter and their limits and derivatives are found in Chapters 2 and 3 at the same time as polynomials and other elementary functions. In this Fourth Edition, Stewart retains the focus on problem solving, the meticulous accuracy, the patient explanations, and the carefully graded problems that have made these texts word so well for a wide range of students. All new and unique features in CALCULUS, FOURTH EDITION have been incorporated into these revisions also.
I've had my nose in this hefty Stewart tome for years and years. It's served me well but it's outlived its usefulness to me. It's far too numerical and formulaic without giving a treatment to the true analytical theory that underlies the beauty of calculus as a discipline and a science. This is merely "toolkit calculus" and I fear it abstracts engineering and science students away from the underlying theory that mathematicians are treated to. This makes for a decent human calculator. Engineers should be applied mathematicians, not calculators.
Alternatives: early editions of Thomas, Apostol, or Spivak.
Well it took me a full year but calc 1,2,3 are over! calc finale this week(wish me luck) calc one was hell, calc two was heaven and three would have been heaven if I did my homework, I’ve put myself in hell now. And I deserve that. Not as good as a rom com, but the ending made me cry. 🥀🫣🔥🐐🙈 don’t read this one if you want to have a life✨😭
