A Practical Guide to CBT for Work: Enjoying Work Is Easy as CBT

Rate this book

An INTRODUCING PRACTICAL GUIDE to applying this hugely popular therapy in the workplace. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, commonly known as CBT, has roots stretching back as far as the ancient Greeks. It is a talking cure – a branch of therapy widely regarded as effective in curing or at least alleviating the symptoms of a wide range of disorders from anorexia to post-traumatic stress disorder. INTRODUCING CBT FOR WORK – A PRACTICAL GUIDE focuses on how you can incorporate CBT’s insights to improve your time in the workplace, such as tackling lack of self-motivation or feelings of inadequacy, and replacing them with new ways of thinking that will make you both happier and more effective in your work. Whether you’re suffering from a particular complaint or simply feel that CBT’s measured and results-driven approach can be of benefit to you, this is the perfect concise guidebook.

I have plenty of textbooks and general books in my professional library on CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), so I borrowed this from Prime Reading just to skim, and I ended up finding it so useful that I ended up purchasing it. If you want a thorough more general practitioner text of teaching CBT professionally or applying on yourself, there are more expanded extensive texts out there that cover more areas and how to apply, but if you are singularly looking for particular application about enjoying and surviving the workplace without being destroyed by the mental crushing pathos created by your mind and the workplace environment then this is the book to get.

After discussing the history of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and giving you the CBT Kit (steps and process of applying cognitive behavioral therapy), the chapters following each discussed different work issues. They included anger/frustration, anxiety at work, guilt, depression, low self-esteem, maximizing happiness at work, and balancing work with your life outside work. Each chapter had great hypothetical and true real life anecdotes of people struggling with that particular issue at work. I enjoyed the story of Candy in the chapter on self esteem at work, whom after applying CBT to herself made herself a badge that said, "Your approval is not necessary."

Like I said useful book I highly recommend.

Very basic overview of common mental health problems and the CBT techniques that can help overcome them.

Great for complete newbies to the subject. I'm sure this book will help many. It's useful that there's a book that focuses on workplace issues.

However it does fall into the 'it's your fault you feel so bad, so just think yourself better!' oversimplified patronising way of dealing with things too much for my liking.

Everyone can benefit from therapy. Whether in relationships or work or trauma. With some hard work you can change the way you think and behave. You can take control of your spirals. Finally feel confident in the discomfort. You can create boundaries without having to explain them to anyone. You can look at that coworker with their low emotional intelligence and just shrug it off because you're stronger and cleverer than them.

Good read with enough detail

This was a good read and met the criteria of an introduction well. Enough detail to cover the key points in simple yet intelligent language. If you're looking for an in-depth text book this is not it but if you want to understand the working principle of CBT with useful examples and practical self help ideas i highly recommend it.

Good primer

A decent intro to CBT for novices. The ABC framework is easy to understand, remember, and apply. And the case studies are good examples to draw from. A quick and easy primer.

This book has served as a good reminder that it is important to look after our mental state and not just our physical wellbeing. I did not find any groundbreaking information in its pages but it was a useful read nonetheless.

This book contains some practical advice to improve quality of life. Read it once, and then read it again - slowly- with a pen/pencil and a diary to make a note and try implementing stuff in life.
Will update this review after some time based on whatever changes I see in my life.

A decent intro to CBT

I think this was a good start to CBT but felt that the second half of the book wasn’t as good. I would have loved to see more attention on CBT/REBT.

Fast read but useful little book. I would go back to it again and again. The Kit is easy to remember and use.

Some solid basic advice on how to have a slightly better headspace. Wouldn't entirely call it a work focused book, but it's good for giving you practice to improve your thought patterns.

For people new to CBT

Honestly, thought this may add to what I already know about CBT, but it didn't. This book is definitely for people who have never heard or practiced CBT and is elementary in it's approach to implement CBT practices to your life.

Good introduction to CBT. Very simply written with examples and tasks to complete to help you with depression and anxiety. If you want a short book about CBT, a good place to start.
