The Black Swan Inheritance

The striking Black Swan is native to Australia, unrelated to the seemingly pure White Swan of Europe. She is found in the strangest of places – from ugly mines to cultivated farms, peaceful bushland to violent coast.

Anita had the kind of reputation in high school that no one wants to carry into adulthood, especially since she wants to be a doctor like her dad. Now at university, she is determined to be good, but one little end-of-semester celebration can’t hurt, right? Well, it can if she ends up having a one-night stand with a werewolf that triggers a dark awakening. Turns out Anita’s over-active libido has become more than something hormonal – it’s magical.
The Black Swan is a powerful legacy that brings both temptation and danger. Having now inherited the title and all that comes with it, Anita finds herself beset upon by ancient abominations that won’t take no for an answer. No wonder the Black Swan had been driven to seclusion and banishment in the past. But Anita is determined not to run away – she is here to help, whether the medieval dragon-wolf or the undead cultists want it or not.
She will be no one’s pawn. She will rise to the challenge.
If she can just manage to deal with her own flaws first. Anxiety, panic-attacks, and bouts of bitchiness does not a successful diplomat make.

Note: I received a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Plot/Story
The concept of Black Swan witch is really unique and for me that’s a huge plus point but the direction in which the story proceeded seemed a bit lost to me. Overall it’s a nice story but I have a strong feeling that if the story’s direction would have been defined, it could have been an epic read.
I liked the different elements of magic, werewolf and Vampires but sometimes it seemed a bit too much. One minute there’s nothing and the other minute there’s everything. I guess if all the elements would have been introduced slowly then it might have been more entertaining. It felt a bit rushed.

Characters
I liked the character of Anita. Who is struggling with her life, scarred by her eventful past and her sex-addiction. I felt connected to her 90% of the time, which is good (considering this is debut novel by the author.) I also liked the character Christopher. It was more refined and easily relatable than the lead.
The villains were good too, so were the other characters with small roles, like Anita’s dad and step-mom.

Romance/Kills
This book doesn’t have romance as the main theme but yea, it shows the beginning of the relationship that Anita and Christopher might share in the next parts. There was a possibility of a love triangle and as soon as it started I was kinda hoping that it shouldn’t have been so, but Marigold skilfully eliminates it and turns the book around beautifully. In my opinion, it worked out well for the book.

Writing
I loved Marigold’s writing! It is easily relatable and surprisingly good. It was witty and clever. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it kept me glued to the book. Marigold’s writing makes up for all the little misses and hence, four stars for this book. Her writing is one of the best things about the book. I really look forward to read more books by her.

Beginning
The beginning of the book is good and it pulled me in right from the first sentence (yea, it’s really creative!) I was really intrigued when Anita mentions flying casually and that was the beginning of a roller-coaster ride.

Ending
The ending seemed a bit of a slog what with Anita visiting her parents and everything. I actually skipped the last part because it all got a bit too much. Other than that, the way it ended, as in, with the werewolves and the Vampires was good and leaves a lot of scope for high expectations from the next part.

Blurb
The blurb is really good and gives a very precise idea of what one can expect from this book. If I would have seen this book in a book store I’d have definitely picked it up after reading the blurb.

Cover Art
The cover art of this edition is really good and I prefer this one to the previous one. It depicts the Swan beautifully and the face of the girl under the swan is really pretty.

With The Black Swan Inheritance, Marigold Deirdre Dicer has created an intriguing story of a young woman who learns that there is magic in the world, on the way becomes more confident and finds a way to get over her anxiety attacks. The Black Swan Inheritance is an entertaining and very gripping read with a very likeable main character. You can watch Anita grow, her instincts tell her most of the times who to trust. Power often leads to corruption; Anita wants to be a good person and to make the right decisions. Marigold Deirdre Dicer develops the story in an awesome way - it has a great flow. I was drawn into the story right away, was very close to Anita and all events. This first instalment is a very promising start of a series. I just have to read the next instalments! The Black Swan Inheritance is a great read for paranormal and/or new adult fans. Also an interesting reads for those who read their fair share of vampire stories, witches and urban fantasy in general.

This a book to read again. Highly recommended.

A wonderful new author Books often reveal the personality of their authors. How can they not? The author pulls the characters and worlds straight from their brains and their hearts. If the author is basically a nice person it shines through their work. If not, well, I can usually tell.
Marigold Deidre Dicer (Sarah to her friends) is a truly wonderful person. She is kind, considerate, dedicated, all the things you want in a friend. And I have been happy to get to know her over the past several months, first as a compatriot in the ‘blogosphere’ and later as her editor for The Black Swan Inheritance. Now, if I could just travel to Australia to give her a hug, how great would that be?
The Black Swan Inheritance is an urban fantasy, true. But it is more than that. It is a story that incorporates the fantasy world, but wraps it around a core of what it is like to be not only a young, popular-for-all-the-wrong-reasons girl, but different from all your peers – no matter if that ‘difference’ is based upon natural or supernatural reasons. Now, if she can just save herself from werewolves, vampires . . . and her own insecurities. What is a freshman college student to do?
This is a multilayered tale of deception and danger, hatred and love, and the lengths one will go to save family. Anita is flawed, without a doubt, but her very flaws encourage a deep compassion for her and what she is going through, the changes in her life and the danger to her family.
Character development, in this case, is one of the strongest aspects of the book. Anita herself is a multi-layered character of both strength and weakness, while the other characters are more ‘real’ than many others in the genre. Strengths are often overwhelmed by weaknesses, emotional and psychological damage abounds, and personal growth is a stop-and-start process that leads to a deep emotional connection with not only the ‘good’ characters but even with the ‘bad’. She makes terrible decisions, but all the decisions, good and bad, are real in the context of the story. Children must learn, grow and learn, and that growth is often painful, not only for the child herself, but for those around her. But that very pain strengthens. And Anita has the potential to be one of the strongest new urban fantasy characters in the genre.
I am the editor for The Black Swan Inheritance. My review, however, is based only upon my feelings, not upon my friendship with Sarah. (OK, so I pay really close attention to my client’s books, what do you expect? ;-) It is still a great book!) If you enjoy my reviews, please “Like” them on Amazon.com and/or Audible.com. Thanks you!

Read this review and more at Classy Cat Books

I was provided a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair review.

The first sentence of this book was great:

It all began with this majorly trippy sex dream.
I was immediately engaged to figure out how on earth a sex dream could possibly start anything in the form of a novel. From there, the first several chapters did an excellent job of introducing Anita: she has a strong voice and was pretty easy to relate to. She manages to get herself into an awful lot of trouble over the course of the book, largely due to the fact that she doesn’t know what’s going on with this whole magic thing. Let alone the werewolves and the vampires.

It’s a new twist on an old plot. There are concerns about a war between the vampires and the werewolves, but not for any of the cliche reasons. The new, lonely witch is going to have some sway on the outcome, but she has a pretty unique legacy.

The rules of this world all seemed to work together, although there were some that I didn’t quite follow/agree with. The fact that blood and sex both were tied to magical powers makes a certain amount of sense, but there were points where I felt that went a little over the top, though nothing overly demonstrative.

Each of the characters on their own were strong — I liked Christopher and Hannah and everyone else. However, I didn’t quite track with some of their relationships to Anita — I just didn’t quite feel the bond between them the way I think I was supposed to. Anita also has a tendency to say things in dialog as a way of providing information to the reader that doesn’t seem to have been otherwise demonstrated: things like, “My power’s gotten a lot stronger,” when we, the reader, haven’t seen any evidence of that. So that kind of took away from the story for me.

Overall, this was a pretty good read (and it was quick too!). So go pick a free copy today in celebration of the brand new cover!

Marigold Dicer has beautifully woven together a masterpiece that readers won't want to let go of. The story focuses on the Black Swans which are native to Australia. They are beautiful and very powerful creatures. And Anita happens to be one of them. Studying at the college level to become a doctor just like her dad, Anita decides to celebrate just one time. Thinking that the one time celebration won't hurt her, right? As it turns out this one move causes everything to change within Anita and her world. Anita isn't going to back down from the new challenge presented to her by her actions, but neither is she ready to be a perfect diplomat. She has her anxiety, panic attacks and bitchy moments to comb through before she can really step up to the plate and handle what is happening. Can Anita do it? Or will she fail in attempt to step up within her world? And what about her one night stand with a werewolf who triggers a dark awakening?

The Black Inheritance is a must read novel! I loved following Anita's journey and growth as a strong character. Her world, thoughts, and actions became my own as I was lured deep into the plot. A well written story that is one readers everywhere won't want to miss out on reading. A compelling and intriguing novel that will hook readers in from the beginning to the very end. Marigold Dicer has a talent of bringing her characters and new world alive for us readers. Incredible characters and a perfect read for all, I rate this novel a five out of five stars.

The Black Swan Inheritance is a book about the relationship between vampires, werewolves and a witch. The main character is Anita, a biology university student dreaming to become a medical student. Anita doesn’t have many friends; she spends her time studying or working part time in a Deli store. This ordinary girl discovers her magical powers and suddenly she is in the middle of a war between vampires and werewolves.
It’s a very interesting and entertaining book, it kept me turning the pages, and I couldn’t put it down. The character Anita is telling the story, and I felt like she was telling this story directly to me, like we were close friends. I like this style used by the author, making me directly involved with the story.
This is the first book of Marigold D.D. I’m really impressed with all the details of the characters and how the scenes were well written; I had a vivid image of the characters and the places where the scenes took place, from a store basement to a mansion on the beach.
I really recommend this book for all fans of mystery involving magical powers. The book has violent and sex scenes, so I don’t recommend it for kids or teenagers and should be rated 18+.
I’m glad the author is working on the follow up story about the little witch Anita.

The Black Swan Inheritance by Marigold Deidre Dicer was one of the best paranormal novels I’ve ever read! With witches, vampires and werewolves all in the mix, what more could you ask for?

The main character, Anita, seems like an average nerdy uni student until a night out with her friends ends in sex with a werewolf. This leads Anita to realise that she is as witch with a lot more power than she could ever have imagined. She needs to make a decision about which side she will take in the war being carried out between the vampires and werewolves.

This story has such an interesting concept. I really enjoyed learning the story behind Anita’s Black Swan Inheritance and kept me guessing about which side she would take until the very end.

The Black Swan Inheritance has a fun light hearted style and fits right in the YA fantasy genre. The main character Anita is sassy and a bit of a klutz but her flaws are realistic and endearing. At the beginning I did find the pace a little slow for the first 3/4 chapters and I waxed and waned as to whether I liked the book. But then Marigold Deidre Dicer style suddenly got hold of me and the pace rocketed. It was kind of like being on a roller coaster- that slow pull up the first track and then the story let loose. In fact at times I found myself wanting a little more slowness to let me catch up lol.

I enjoyed Dicer's take on the werewolves and Vampires. This was not the typical (Twighlight) type vamp romance. there was much more to the story than romance, in fact that took a backseat to the main story. The characters in the book were pretty well developed and as this is part of a trilogy I expect to see them become even more so.

Towards the end of the book I felt the plot points were racing by just a little too fast. Some of the new powers she gained and the explanations were a little glossed over, but it seems the author is setting up for the next in the series so, again I am confident that she will be exploring these further.

Overall this was a fun, lighthearted story that was really entertaining. The authors style is quirky and I loved her sense of humor - though some American readers might miss some of her references due to the cultural divide.

Great story and I will be interested to see how this story progresses into the next book.

Marigold D. D. is an up-and-coming author whose first installment in an Urban Fantasy series is "The Black Swan Inheritance". It incorporates the world of witches, vampires and werewolves, giving them a fresh, very Australian flavor, obvious in not only the settings in the story, but by the language and specific slang. The main character is a young woman who comes into her powers as a witch and is immediately thrown into a conflict she may not be fully prepared for. We see her struggle and grow as the story develops and hopefully overcomes her fears and insecurities.
Anita, a 20 year old medical student with a confusing and the way she sees it, shameful experiences of school, is a multilayer character chuck-full of angst, despair and weaknesses, but somewhat balanced with flashes of maturity, strength, brilliance, and optimism. The supporting characters are also well placed in the rode of her growth and help show her assent to adulthood and supernatural powers.
The book was fun, the author has a natural feel for story-telling and I can honestly say I would love to read the next installments. There were some issues with typos and structure, but I am sure this will be ironed-out in the works that follow. Good luck and hope to read many more works with this delightful Down-Under sensibility!

This review is from: The Black Swan Inheritance (Kindle Edition)

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Black Swan Inheritance is a debut NA, paranormal fantasy by Marigold Dicer. Let me start by stating that for a first book, I thought it was very well written. Now Anita is the main character and the Black Swan. The Black Swans are native to Australia and are known to be extremely beautiful and powerful creatures. Anita is a very determined young woman and is always willing to rise to the challenge whether its helpful or not. Now, vampires, werewolves, witches and magic are also part of the storyline but Marigold added a different twist to the whole vampire/werewolf aspect of it and kept it interesting to the end. There are hints of romance in this book but nothing else more. I'm assuming it's being held off until her next book in the series...hopefully. I found each character complex, interesting and at times relatable, especially Anita. At times she seems lost and a little overwhelmed with the amount of surreal information she is given and yet at the same time must deal with her anxiety and panic attacks. There were times where I felt lost in the story but not enough to stop reading. I enjoyed The Black Swan Inheritance and would recommend this read to anyone who enjoys the paranormal, urban fantasy genre

I really liked this book. I had never read anything about vampires and werewolves before, and I wondered how I was going to feel about it. The way it was written, however, made it quite enjoyable. The main character was hilarious and was someone I'd like to get to know. (Although, she could be considered "crude" by other readers, so if you like your books clean, skip this one.) She was flawed, which is a trait I like in my characters, and even though some unrealistic things happened to her, her reaction to them was genuine. I mean, how would any of us react if we found out we had magical powers?

I am looking forward to the next installment!

This unusual New Adult fantasy novel introduces us to Anita, a nineteen year old student who wants to be a doctor, however a night of clubbing with a new friend leads to events that awaken her magical nature that has laid dormant for so long. Anita then finds herself having to navigate a world of werewolves and vampires to survive.

I was drawn into this story and became invested in Anita as a character when I read this. I enjoyed the way this fantasy story was woven into the everyday life of a student in Brisbane. Due to the language and sexual content in this book it is more suited to readers in their late teens.

This novel rises to the challenge

Enjoyed the feisty yet reassuringly flawed heroine's trials and tribulations from the start. The rules of this paranormal other-world were convincingly, therefore realistically spun by the author. Having said that, I was sometimes a little lost with fast-moving action scenes but that could have been from reading on my iPhone!
The main male character reminded me of why I enjoyed the Moonlight series. Who can resist a sexy, vulnerable and honourable vampire?
Of course, being a series, I'm curious to know how some things pan out.

This should be a movie. Someone, option this! The heroine's voice is amazing. I hate "sparkly" vampires and this isn't a story of vampires and werewolves like you've read before. This is a well-crafted allegory about become mature.

As for the magic bits, this is not the stuff of Disney. This is earthy and visceral magic. Truly lovely.

I highly recommend.

***I would like to thank the author for providing me with a copy of Black Swan Inheritance in exchange for a fair and honest book review.***

Anita, a sex-addict with a non-existent love life, has aspirations to be a doctor. Trying to be a “good girl” she knows it’s a mistake to go out with her college friend to a club, because of her promiscuous past. Regret comes the next morning when she wakes next to a strange man in a hotel room, but something is else is very different: her body is toned and her skin is clear.

He returns the next day and she’s shocked to learn that the man is a werewolf who uses sexual magic.

In her sleep, she has vivid sex dreams as well as dreams of being a beautiful black swan. She learns in her waking hours that she is a Black Swan Witch. Before she knows it, werewolves and vampires are fighting over her.

And she thought getting a medical degree was hard?

Supernatural sex, werewolves, witches, and vampires await you in this tale of The Black Swan Inheritance.

“Why did I have to fall for the vampire? That was so stupidly cliched of me. Hell, there was no shortage of bad-boy types up here. But did I really have to fall for the worst one?”

I was under the impression that this was a paranormal romance, and perhaps a love triangle story between a witch, vampire, and werewolf, but realized half-way through that this was definitely an urban fantasy story that featured a lot of supernatural sex. I’m glad the novel didn’t go in the direction that I thought it would, (love triangle).

I haven’t heard before of the Black Swan legacy, (maybe it’s an Australian thing?), but I loved the idea of a Black Swan Witch! I’m a huge fan of witches featured in novels and the Black Swan legacy was an unusual but interesting myth/legend.

I really loved the cat, Ginger, and the Black Swan tome that opened to random — yet relevant — pages on it’s own. There’s something magical about ancient books. I want a Black Swan tome!

My favorite scene was toward the end when she walks into the chapel of vampires, taking special care to walk around their soil-covered bodies. Her shadow led her instead of following her. This was a really great scene.

I did find it unusual that the vampires were Christians, considering many Christians would balk at the idea of vamps roaming the earth, so that gave me some pause. Other than that, I loved the vampire ritual with her step-mother — that was awesome! And “Vampire Night” was a great addition to the story, too!

Overall, if you enjoy paranormal urban fantasy featuring witches, vampires, werewolves, as well as epic battle scenes between them, you should check out The Black Swan Inheritance, by Marigold Deidre Dicer!

THE BLACK SWAN INHERITANCE is the first book in Marigold Deidre Dicer’s BLACK SWAN series. The story is set in Australia and follows the story of Anita as she settles into life at university, trying to be a different girl than the one she was in high school. Anita is determined to reach her goal of becoming a doctor like her father. Life, however, decides that her path won’t be quite as easy as she’d like.

When I read the blurb to this book I just knew I had to get my hands on a copy of it. The idea of a “Black Swan” was a really intriguing one, and I was curious to see what Dicer had planned. I also really liked the fact that THE BLACK SWAN INHERITANCE was set in Australia, as most urban fantasies and new adult novels tend to be set somewhere in the US. The book seemed like it had a lot of potential and I couldn’t wait to dive in.

THE BLACK SWAN INHERITANCE is narrated in first person by the main character, Anita. Unfortunately I found Anita to be quite a difficult character to relate to. She seemed to jump about quite a lot in terms of her opinions, and often didn’t seem to think about the possible consequences of her actions – she tended to jump straight into a situation. Anita also seemed to be very hard on herself, especially about the way she acted during high school. I also found the narrative itself to be quite confusing as although Anita was supposed to have no idea what was going on with the supernatural and what was happening to her, quite often she seemed to know just how to handle a situation seemingly without any guidance.

Although Anita is the main narrator of the story, Dicer also provides the occasional section where the narrator switches to the third person which allows the reader to have a broader idea of the overall situation in the novel. Despite this, having finished the book I’m not really sure what happened in the story plot-wise apart from the introduction of Anita and the “big bad”. Dicer created an intriguing “big bad” and although I’m not sure of its motivations, it was brilliantly written and very manipulative. I think it might be my favourite character in the book.

In THE BLACK SWAN INHERITANCE Dicer brings a new story to the urban fantasy table. The concept of the “Black Swan” is an interesting and complex one. Dicer also brings vampires and werewolves back with a more traditional feel, and the Australian settings adds another element of newness to the story. Although this story wasn’t really for me, if you are looking for something new within either the urban fantasy or new adult genres then you may enjoy this.

I got a copy of this book off Smashwords/the author in exchange for an honest review.
