Compelling Fates Saga #2

A Promise so Bold and Broken

Rate this book
After saving her rebel friends on the final day of the election, Elessia is on the run.

But the danger is far from over.

As she fights her guilt for betraying Loche, the man she foolishly believed could mend her broken soul, and wrestles with the unexpected emotions stirring within her for Merrick, her fiercely loyal guard, Elessia learns of the rebel’s true plans—plans that threaten every loved one she’s left behind.

But it’s the even greater peril looming on the horizon—the one that could shatter the very foundations of their world—that forces her to decide whether she is willing to embrace her birthright to the Rantzier name and, with the help of Merrick and his band of unwilling warriors, lead the journey to unite the warring factions of Havlands before it’s too late…

Or before the Fae king and human regent find her.

While I had fun with the first book, I had a really rough time with the second one. I think the only part of it I actually enjoyed was Merrick, just cause he's hot and suffers silently for love.

I had two big issues: the one had to do with the plot and the second with the writing.

Plot

The first book covered a king of 'tournament arc', a set of trials to decide who the next regent of a city would be. Therefore, it made sense that it would have a relatively small cast of relatively fleshed out characters and a setting/scope that wasn't too big. There were hints of bigger things to come, but only by the end do we start getting more info on that.

The stakes of this second book, as the story's scope expands, are meant to be much, much higher. Like, 'ruination and thousands of dead' high. But at no point was I convinced of this, because... almost nothing happens. And anything that does happen, only affects the main and main secondary characters. We are meant to fear the new Fae, the rebels, the king that kept Lessia under his control; yet for the vast majority of this book we are stuck with Lessia, Merrick and their pals, with the later addition of Loche.

On top of that, the worldbuilding isn't nearly fleshed out enough for me to care about all these people that are supposed to be threatened. I barely care about the MCs as it is. Nothing in this, or the first, book supports the scale of the threat, no true buildup to anything, no true sense of dread. On top of that, most of the book's plot is people trying to convince each other that they must do something, but nothing much is ever done. On top of that, the discussions that happen, on strategy, politics, etc. feel extremely surface level.

Writing

The problem with the plot is, to some extent, also the result of the writing itself, in particular one specific choice that the author has made: everything. is. dramatic. all. the. time. Because of this, half the time I feel that the emotions and reactions on page make no sense, and when they do they've lost the ability to make me feel something.

Lessia is a big problem. One, because we are meant to see her as this amazingly good person, always thinking of others, but we haven't seen nearly enough proof of this for it to feel true. Just a lot of telling, not showing. And two, because all her reactions are over the top, before the halfway point she's already screamed at the ocean twice and hasn't had a normal reaction to any revelation of any kind. I expect there to be growling when you have hunky shadow-daddy Fae, but the amount of growls that Lessia alone has produced (or had building inside of her) could fuel a drinking game where everyone would be drunk within the first quarter of the book.

There's actually no normal sounds being made, people don't talk or say things; they snarl, growl, lash out, etc. Also, people don't frown, their brows crash or snap. People don't look at each other, their eyes collide. all. the. damn. time. When Lessia goes up the stairs, her hair "slams" against her back, like the door to a miffed teenager's room. I could go on, but the bottom line is that much editing was needed to tone it all down so that only the right moments were like this.

Another example of the over the top-ness of the book is the constant use of a specific structure:
This one.
The one sentence per line.
Or one word.
Dramatic.
So very dramatic.
This way of writing can be really impactful, especially when used at the end of a chapter where smth big is revealed. But here it is used all the time. Sometimes there's multiple instances on a single page. It's no longer impactful, it's too much and too little at the same time.

It's a shame because the story has a lot of potential, and the characters and magic system are actually pretty cool. The writing itself also has a lot of potential but is dragged down by these few, major issues.

✨A Promise So Bold and Broken✨

This book should also be called “Merrick Unleashed”. Holy freaking smokes, Sophia. This sequel of your Compelling Fates Saga is DELICIOUS. After that simple moment between our FMC and MMC, I about died from swooning and you bring me THIS DELIGHT.

We begin right where we left off from the aftermath of book one. The emotions are big and the reveals keep on coming. We continue to follow our singular third person POV via our fierce and compassionate FMC halfling, Lessia. Trauma, prophecies, and grief abound but there is hope and healing are on the horizon and it looks an awful like the second piece to our love triangle; the one where we got that tiny glimpse at the end that rocked my soul. You know that one? If not, hurry back and read book one (A Tongue So Sweet and Deadly- out now!).

The romance and dynamic is so much different in this one than in book one, but I have to stay that I honestly drooled the entire way through this book because I loved it so so much. It was so perfectly done and I’m an utter simp for this man. We got just a taste of him before but now, y’all, now he is here and he’s put his foot down. He’s. Here. To. Stay.

But even more than that, we have such amazing character development going on, new found family and reunions, and plot twists galore! I am thoroughly enthralled with this series.

Tropes you may find in APSBAB are love triangle-ish, fated mates, possessive and protective shadow daddy MMC, chosen one, fae, unique powers, slow burn to medium spice, they heal together, he tries to make her smile, lights candles to settle her fear of the dark, touch her and ☠️, 🔥 the world for her, and so much more!! APSBAB releases April 30 and you NEED this in your life.

Thank you, Sophia, for continuing to let me be on your street team. So grateful for this arc and opportunity.

4.5 ⭐️ | YOUR. HONOR. I. LOVE. MERRICK.

I felt very passionately about my hate for Loche in the first book. Ok, I guess I didn't hate him but EW. He just wasn't an option for me when Mr. Grumpy Guard was there. This book made me so happy.

"I am taking my fucking time with you."

"He took ten arrows in the back for you."

"My little fighter."

"He already felt like... home."

"I need you to focus on me. Nothing else."

"TIME TO BURN." 🔥

Onto book 3!!

A Promise So Bold and Broken (book 2) by Sophia St. Germain
5⭐️ | 2🌶️

-fae, humans, shifters, a sea wyvern
-political tension
-breadcrumbs 👀
-unique magic
-he trains her
-slowww burn tension
-lots of hand grazes
-“f*ck it”

Ahhhh! This book! This book gave me all the fantasy romance vibes I’ve been craving. It’s full of adventure, trauma healing, relationship building, scheming, plot twists, and the most heated romantic story.

After the events of book one, I’ve been dying to see where the story goes and what becomes on all the breadcrumbs that were left. Needless to say, the plot only gets juicier. Lessia and Merrick, now free from the bonds of the king, are off in search of allies, and the proximity only forces them closer together.

“𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪.”
“𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙚𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙩.”
“𝙈𝙖𝙮𝙗𝙚 𝙄 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙞𝙨𝙨 𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙛𝙛.”

There’s a lot of character development that happens along the way but it does so in all the best romantasy vibing ways. And just when you think you have the plot figured out, Sophia finds a way to surprise you, yet again.

Then on top of that, there’s the MOST delicious slow burn tension and some of my faaaaavorite tropes (no spoilers 🤭🤐). And Merrick.. my man.. my fae male.. ya boii is feral. And growly. But the way he can be an anchor for Lessia while also giving her the freedom to just be, especially after all they’ve been through, will tug at your heart.

“𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬.” 𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠’𝙨 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙧. “𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙩 𝙞𝙩.”
“𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩?” 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙨𝙠𝙚𝙙.
“𝙆𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪.”

And that ending??? I just stared at the wall, processing for an hour. I am both scared and excited for book 3 and the wait feels like agony.

Thank you so much for the advanced copy Sophia! A Promise So Bold and Broken (book 2 of the Compelling Fates saga) releases on April 30, 2025.

Let’s be real — this book wanted to be deep. It wanted to be subversive. But when it mattered most? It chickened out.

Book one had me in a chokehold. The tension between Lessia and Locke? Electric. The banter, the heartbreak, the sheer history between them? They felt like two people clawing toward each other in the middle of the wreckage. Locke was messy, morally gray, emotionally reckless — and I loved him for it. He made hard, painful choices. He lied. He tried. He failed. He felt real.

Then book two showed up, said “Hey, what if we threw all that out,” and handed us Merrick.

His dialogue reads like it was written by a tired AI that was trained exclusively on bad fanfic and Pinterest quotes. The first book he seemed so annoyed by her and barely spoke 5 words and then out of nowhere he is making sexual inundos. And I’m supposed to believe Lessia fell deeply in love with that? After one-and-a-half tense conversations and some tragic staring?

It felt like the author wanted a brooding “soulmate” trope ending, even if it made zero sense for Lessia’s arc. This is a girl who literally spends two books fighting fate, saying no to prophecy, choosing herself — and then ends up with the guy who represents destiny just because the plot said so??

No. She should’ve chosen Locke. Not because it’s easier, but because it would’ve actually meant something. It would’ve been brave, complicated, earned. Instead we got… tragic shoulder touches and half-baked sexual tension with a glorified bodyguard.

Also, can we talk about how Merrick never actually grows? He’s just there — sad, loyal, silent. Meanwhile Locke is off making gut-wrenching decisions making her take away his memories to protect her and the world. He had dreams and did everything he could to protect his people and the girl he loved. He did whatever he could no matter how it hurt himself. But sure. Let’s give her the guy who’s emotionally available once every lunar eclipse.

Anyway. Two stars for the prose and vibes. Zero stars for the romantic payoff. I will be rereading the Locke scenes and pretending the last third of the series doesn’t exist.

I AM PHYSICALLY UNWELL FROM THE TENSION IN THIS BOOK.

I absolutely adore Merrick. I’ve loved him from book 1 and this book has solidified my undying admiration for the death whisperer.
My heart broke for him when we learnt the extent of what he has been through.

Lessia is fantastic. Broken but trying. All her emotions are valid and the character development was phenomenal.

I cannot wait for book 3, thank god it’s coming out reasonably soon because I don’t know if I would’ve survived a year wait to find out what happens next.

Thank you so much to Sophia St. Germain for letting me read an ARC of this book. This is my honest opinion.

This part gave me all the feels!!😶‍🌫️ Negalėjau palikt knygos ramybėj, kol jos nebaigiau.

Tikrai pirmą kart patiko abu MMC, nors jau turiu savo fav, vistiek ano gaila 😆

Žodžiu imu trečią, vėl pakibsiu, nes 4 tik gruodį.🥹

I never want to see another exclamation point or the word “bastard” again

Look this isn’t good, but it’s also not awful. Mostly it has my favorite troupe so we had to continue. But will I read the next one? Yeah probably idk

Also while the first book felt unique, this one feels ratherrr close to TOG

**Fair warning: the plot doesn’t make sense, you just jump to new things without explaining how we got there. For example I went back and reread the last few pages a couple times and don’t really understand how what happened happens…so you really need to suspend your disbelief a bit

“I am not whole, but I am still worthy of being chosen.”

Sophia St. Germain delivers another emotionally packed masterpiece with A Promise so Bold and Broken. This second book in the Compelling Fates Saga builds on everything I loved in book one—high stakes, layered characters, and slow-burn romance that had me squealing and clutching my chest.

Elessia’s emotional journey is so raw and beautifully written. Her struggle with guilt, identity, and desire to protect those she loves resonated deeply. And Merrick? Oh. My. Gods.

Merrick absolutely owns this book. He’s fiercely loyal, morally gray, and his protective energy is unmatched. I was screaming when he said:

“She doesn’t need to get better,” he snarled softly. “If she decides to break apart this whole ship to deal with what happened, I’ll help her. If she wants to kick your lying ass into the depths of the sea, I’ll take your legs. If she decides to rip the world to shreds for what it’s done to her, I’ll cheer her on. And if you were a true friend… you would as well.”

The man is unhinged in the best way, and his chemistry with Elessia crackles on every page. Whether it’s his ice-cold threats like:

“Careful how you talk to her, shifter.” Ice dripped from every word leaving Merrick’s mouth. “She might not want to hurt any of you, but I certainly have no such qualms. I’ve killed your kind before, and I’ll do it again if I must.”

Or his moments of brutal honesty:

“Good ones…” Merrick scoffed. “You’re so naive. I’ve lived long enough to learn the belief in inherent goodness is a delusion.”

He brings that feral, ride-or-die love I crave in a romantasy. And Elessia can hold her own too—she’s sharp, stubborn, and knows how to dish it right back:

“Are you trying to get me undressed?” she taunted, ignoring the small voice in her mind warning her that she’d just decided not to agitate him more. A vein throbbed by his temple. “If I were, you’d already be splayed out on the sand beneath me, begging me to join you.”

I loved seeing more of the world, meeting new characters, and peeling back the layers of rebellion, legacy, and fate. And that ending? Utterly devastating and so, so good.

I’m not just ready for book 3—I need it.

A Promise So Bold and Broken immediately picks up from the ending of A Tongue So Sweet and Deadly, and I have mixed feelings about this sequel. Did I enjoy the book? Yes, and I found that many of my questions from the first book were answered. Did the plot build? Sort of, and there was some character development.

However, I must admit that I am slightly disappointed in this sequel because I wanted more from the female protagonist, Elessia. I comprehend her past trauma and her inclination to keep her true self guarded from others. However, a significant portion of the book revolved around her whining about how everyone close to her detested or harbored the worst feelings for her. This aspect felt drawn out, and I’m a fan of a strong female protagonist who avoids dwelling on the hardships she’s endured and gets her revenge. Honestly, Merrick STOLE the show and left no room for doubt! I swoon for this Fae 🤭! His actions, words, and demeanor kept me personally invested in the story. I simply can’t get enough of him.

While some of my questions from the previous book were answered, nothing significant happened in this book to further the plot until the last 20%. I did catch on early to the direction the story was taking, so I wasn’t entirely surprised by the “plot twists.”

Despite these minor disappointments, I will be reading book 3, A Bond So Fierce and Fragile, when it releases later this month. Book 2 ended with a cliffhanger, and I need to know what happens next!

4,5⭐️ thank you sophia for letting me be a part of your ARC team and receive these as ARCs!🫶🏼😭 this was SO GOOD!? I was screaming giggling kicking my feet merrick my man!!! I loved this more than the first (obviously as a merrick girly from the start)! and yes she did the ending thingy again🥲😭

it would be so interesting to reread the first one now! I loved the new characters, I NEED more wyverns and Ydren! the spice was spicing, the yearning, female rage, emotional connection, and politics! I loved them.

at first I was a bit confused and needed to gather my bearings regarding all the characters, fae courts, who is hood who is bad and third person pov always throws me off for a second. but after that it was full steam! yes. I did guess some twists again but there was also suspense and for a second I was not sure which way the love triangle would tip. I'm so happy even though the ending is shocking (again)😭 where's my wife moment

This was fun & I think a solid 3.75 - 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ so rounding up! Let’s get into why 👇🏼

PLOT
🚨 this is book 2 in a series so if you haven’t read book 1 please don’t read the plot synopsis

Less is on the run after removing Loche’s memories of their love & saving her friends. But it’s more than just escaping, because they find out there is a bigger battle on the horizon they must face. & they can’t do it alone. This book has
- fae, humans, shifters, wyverns
- an MMC who yearnnnnnnns
- love triangle behavior
- training
- new characters
- med spice

PROS
- Yearntown Population: this book. There were some reeeeeally solid moments in the relationship development of this! I mean, this book felt like it was 90% romantic relationship development haha & I definitely enjoyed that aspect!
- Getting more of Merrick’s backstory was great. He’s a pretty dynamic character.
- Some of the new characters in this were fun, & I enjoyed the development or display of their relationship.
- I liked the introduction of the sea wyvern as well as some of how Less’s powers were used.
- I definitely despise, loathe, haaaaate a villain in this so that’s good because that’s a visceral reaction.
- Less had a really solid “fuck fate” moment that brought me immense joy.

MIDS
- For whatever reason I’m just not super obsessed with this series & theoretically I should be gobbling it up because it’s got so much stuff I love. But idk, I’m just not. Like it’s still good, but I can’t place my finger on why I’m not obsessed.
- I’m not totally sure what just happened at the end. Not in a good like “OMG WHAT HAPPENED” way but also not in a “wtf was that even” way. Just a little like… huh?
- Elessia is fine. I really don’t have strong feelings for her either way for the most part. I had that moment in the PROS section but yeah other than that she’s just fine for me.

CONS
- Not a whole lot happened plot-wise in this book until the very end.
- Sometimes the writing felt a taaaaaad repetitive. So much growling.

I will likely continue with this series but taking a break for now, maybe until book 4 comes out!

- Loche gave her the items to control the sea wyverns right? Like that’s what that was at the end? I remain a little unclear what… actually happened. Especially with Merrick’s chapter being right after but it also didn’t seem like it was directly after what happened with Loche & Less? Not entirely clear there
- I really kind of wish the mate reveal happened in book 3 & we got a proper love triangle. Spend book 2 getting close to Merrick & developing feelings only for Loche to come in at the end & then book 3 is the back & forth of the love triangle where she can’t decide, & book 4 is her solidly with Merrick after a mate reveal. But this is because I’m a slut for a good love triangle.
- Loche taking away the fae’s powers right before the meeting was legitimately idiotic. It felt in direct opposition to what I expected his character would do. He did something the last book that I felt that way about too so maybe I just thought he was smarter than he is.

As always, I’ll be upfront with the fact that I’m Sophia’s friend, PA, & alpha/beta reader.
This will never affect my truthfulness in reviews. I call it like I see it, and she knows that.

The honest truth is - I find her to be one of the most genuinely talented authors of this age.
She has interesting storylines with a depth of plot that is refreshing.
Her characters are complex, as are their relationships - romantic and otherwise.
She doesn’t hide from scary realities of trauma and war.
There’s no glazing over it. She lets it be honest and raw.

The romantic tension she writes is impeccable. I LIVE for it. But once she gets it to the spicy point, it’s detailed, but it’s sweet and tender and never gratuitous. I’ll be vulnerable - the spice scene in this book is the only one ever that has made me teary.

This book is really a building block from the first book to the rest of the series coming up, but it’s the best and least boring building block book I’ve ever come across.

I’ve read APBB repeatedly at this point, and it hasn’t once felt like a chore. I genuinely still love it.

Sophia never sits and lets her writing get stagnant. She’s consistently working to improve and grow and that shows in every single new book she puts out.
I’m so in love with her writing, and I would be even if she was a random author I stumbled across and read without knowing her.

PLEASE pick up this series and read it. I swear you won’t regret it.

The first book was so good but this one was totally different. I didn’t like the way the story took a turn in this second book. I was not really invested in this love story.

The the most that bothered me was how all these people were following this girl when she had not done nothing special. She had barely any powers. Nothing much happened until about halfway of the book. I was really bored waiting for action or anything to happen. I wish that I had seen more of the villain so I could believe all the high stakes at play.

I think I will just pretend that this book didn’t happen and just stick with the first book.

Fluffy…way too much fluffy!!! The books was going to be a 2⭐️ but the ending was the only thing that saved it. Just read about the first third of the book and then skip to chapter 38…that’s were the real action starts.

Also, I almost DNF about 40% because I couldn’t deal with how whiny Elissia was in this book. I know she has been through some major trauma but all of sudden everything set her into a panic attack. She would say she is tired of letting males run all over her but then Locke’s name would be brought up and we were back into another panic attack. Girl get over it. We have all been through break ups. 🙄

Also I just have to say without giving too much away, “Thank you to the author for letting Him be her mate”.

I just not sure if I can do book 3. I need fast pace action and no more whining.

How many times can all the characters growl and snarl in a book. According to my kindle… Growl 73 times and Snarl 86.

This is fun and bingeable! I won’t say it’s the most unique romantasy, but I’m having fun. I really enjoyed Lessia’s growth in this book, and I think the romance in this book was significantly improved from book 1. This one did feel a little slower, but I’m excited to read the next book!

Sophia is seriously a gifted writer! This world is immense and powerful but not overly complicated!

It took me about 30% to feel really invested but that’s definitely a me problem because I’m in a slump. But once things picked up (for me) they took off!!! The book alluded back to the first enough throughout the book that I was able to remember what had happened.

One thing I’ve really appreciated throughout this second book is that the plot and purpose is very clear! I’m not forgetting why we’re here and what we’re doing!

The characters relationships and development were so good in this book. This was a heavily character development book for sure and was so good!

By the end of the book, I was emotionally WRECKED! It’s a slight love triangle and my heart is BREAKING! 😭

I can’t wait for the next one!

I’m loving this series. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will be vague when I say this has my absolute number one fav trope. And I ate it up. Loving the plot and characters!

Still loving this series! There are a few annoyances that keep it from being an absolute five star read - like Lessia’s constant guilt obsession. Good grief! Not EVERYTHING in the whole freaking world is your fault. *sheesh*. And some of the sentence structure can be a challenge for those purists. Still, it is pretty much an unputdownable read!
