Second Down Scrooge

Rate this book
A steamy pro football, second chance, single mom, single dad holiday romance from Amazon Top Ten Bestselling author Lisa Suzanne.

I never planned to give Austin Graham, the tight end for the Vegas Aces and the father of my little girl, a second chance this holiday season. After all, he messed up. Big time.

But the shimmering decorations on the Christmas tree cast him in a totally new light—especially when I get home from a disastrous blind date and find him on my couch with our sweet baby asleep on his chest.

He's not the villain he so easily plays, but coming in second to everyone his entire life has pushed him to act like a Grinch. I'm getting swept up watching him with our daughter, seeing his eyes twinkle in the Christmas lights, and feeling his hands caressing my skin.

Now I need to figure out whether it's worth risking both my heart and my little girl's to show this second down scrooge that he comes in first with us.

Second Down Scrooge by Lisa Suzanne

4/5 stars

Second Down Scrooge is such a fun, beautiful and heartfelt Christmas novella. In this book we follow Kelly and Austin. About a year ago they had a beautiful baby girl Mia together but certain events drove them apart. Austin used to be a member of a s** club and he also ruthlessly used other people to try and advance his football career. He released a damning video of her best friend and her boyfriend and that was the last straw for Kelly.

But almost a year has passed and things have changed drastically and are starting to change. Since Austin became a father he realized the consequences of his actions. And he wants to become the best father he can be and a great example for his daughter. So he wants to make amends with the people he hurt. And that is in part what this book is about. It's about a beautiful redemption arc of Austin who truly wants to become a better man and friend for those people around him.
His backstory tugged at my heartstrings and it explains a lot of why he did the things he did.

Kelly sees the change and she admires him for it. But when a customer sets her up with her grandson she reluctantly agrees. She wants to get over Austin. But as the date unfolds she realizes there is no one else for her but Austin. And Austin's body is wrecked with jealousy when he realizes his girl is going out with somebody else.

And that is what this story is about. It's about redemption and growing together. It's about becoming a better man and putting the needs of others before your own. It's about strength and perseverance. And I really like that. And all those elements combined in a christmas setting made this novella a joy to read.

4 big stars from me for this joyful christmas story.

Dnf at 51%. The characters had no chemistry and got back together way too quickly. I know the story was short but I didn’t care about any of the characters. I lost interest pretty quickly. Also the story felt like it was dragging on even though it was a short story. For those reasons I couldn’t force myself to finish this.

I didn’t love the first half of this book. I didn’t feel the connection between Austin and Kelly. I think it was because they had an entire relationship before the beginning of this book. The story started with them apart and we were told what happened instead of getting to experiencing it as it happened. So, as a reader I felt the disconnect too.

Then at about the half way part I started to feel the connection. There was less of Austin’s inner monologue about always coming in 2nd, which quite frankly was kinda depressing 😔. Austin became self aware, and Kelly forgave his mistakes.

It ended up being cute, and I will definitely check out some of this authors other books.

Second Down Scrooge- Lisa Suzanne
Narrated by Tor Thom and Kelsey Navarro Foster

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Narration 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧

This is probably Lisa’s cutest, sweetest book. Very low conflict. Not as angsty and full of drama like her other books are, but it was perfect for a holiday romance. If you had read previous books in her Vegas aces world (not necessary to enjoy this book) you would have seen the drama play out where Austin betrays Kelly’s best friend, causing Kelly to lose trust in him. I loved seeing Austin actually work to gain her trust and his position on the field back and not sabotage his way to where he wants to be.

Tor and Kelsey did a stunning job on this audio. They have been a fantastic duo on the last few audios on Lisa’s books and this one was just as good.

A Feel-Good Christmas Story

As with all of Ms. Suzanne’s books she brings another five-star read with her athletes and the women they love. This was a great second chance romance that not only gave me all the feels but add in the Christmas spirit and it can’t get any better.

This is my first read by this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Second Down Scrooge is part of the Vegas Aces series, but it may be read on its own. I enjoyed the author’s writing style, and even though I hadn’t read the previous books, she made it easy to follow.

Austin and Kelly are former partners who now co-parent their child. Though they are no longer together, they are attempting to responsibly co-parent, particularly as the holidays approach. Austin has made numerous mistakes in the past and has fought hard to turn his life around. He is determined to win back Kelly and reunite his family.

This book was an amazing quick read. I enjoy sports romances, and the second chance romance was a perfect combo. I fell in love with this little family!

Overall, I recommend adding this to your TBR if you’re looking for an enjoyable second chance book filled with all the Christmas feels!

Y’all, I loved this one so much! Pro football playing falling first? Yes! Holiday romance? Yes! Second chance at love? Yes!

Kelly is the sweetest soul and deserves the best! She is the best single mother too. Austin is a guy with a rough history, but wants to become better for his daughter, Mia. I enjoyed watching the three of them grow closer and closer. It reminded me a lot of a cute Christmas hallmark movie. It really was the best! Lisa, thank you again for putting a smile on my face and warmth in my heart while reading this. 🫶🏻

This is a fast paced, short Christmas story filled with sports, single parent, and second chance.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just didn’t. I’m all for sport and second chance romances but this wasn’t it. It took me far too long to read this book for how short it was. This book had so much potential, but just something was missing.
I felt like it was very rushed and forced. I felt zero connection to the characters and they had zero chemistry. I also felt that they went from 0-100 in DAYS! Austin was groveling for Kelly, but she was so hung up on not trusting him, to the point where it was so repetitive and annoying. It also bothered me that their full first and last names were at the heading of the chapters instead of just Kelly or Austin.

Thank you Valentine PR & Lisa Suzanne for the Arc!

"Second Down Scrooge" is a sweet and heartwarming holiday novella that delivers all the festive feels with a second-chance romance twist. Austin and Kelly navigate a tender journey of redemption and forgiveness, with plenty of swoon-worthy moments—especially when Austin steps up as a devoted dad to their baby girl. Watching his Grinch-like exterior melt in the glow of Christmas lights is utterly charming, and their growing connection feels genuine and heartfelt.

This is a perfect quick read for the holiday season, with just the right mix of romance and family warmth. It’s low on angst, high on hope, and sprinkled with festive cheer, making it an ideal feel-good escape. Fans of the series will enjoy catching up with familiar faces, but this story absolutely shines on its own as a sweet tale of love, growth, and second chances.

*This is an ARC review

If you're looking for a light, easy read with a second chance romance, single parents, and a festive holiday setting, this book is for you.

Personally, the story was too predictable for my liking, I didn't feel much chemistry between the characters, and the romance seemed rushed without much emotional build up. Additionally, the drama felt forced and unnecessary.

Thank you so much Valentine PR/and the author for the advance copy❤️

First and foremost I want to thank Lisa and Valentine PR for this Arc opportunity! 🎄🎅❤️‍🔥

Are you looking for cute, spicy Christmas short story to keep you in the spirt for Christmas?! Look no further than this! Lisa made this story cute, spicy, and had me all up in the Christmas spirit! Who doesn’t enjoy a good single parent, second chance romance! I don’t want to spoil anything by saying toooooooo much, but seriously, this book had me feeling all the feels 🤭

- christmas novella 🎅
- short and spicy 🌶️
- second chance 🤗
- duel POV 👩‍❤️‍👨
- single mum/ single dad 🧑👩
- pro football dad 🏈
- crafty mum 🎨

This novella follows single mum Kelly as she works through her feelings for her daughter’s father, Austin. She was falling for him but was scared to give him a second chance. Then there was Austin. He had a past he wasn’t proud of. He wanted that second chance so badly, he would do anything, especially making himself a better man, for his girls.

Kelly! She is a fantastic mum, a gorgeous soul and perfect partner. Her feelings are sooo valid throughout the story and I love how she finally accepts her feelings. I love her determination. She was so creative and I loved her connection to all those important in her life.

Austin has his rough history but gosh he makes up for it. He became the partner, the father that the girls needed. He has pride in himself now, and learns how to handle his fears. He loves like no other, especially those he cares most about. And his ability to own up to his mistakes is such a green flag.

I haven’t read anything from Lisa before, but I really enjoyed this and will definitely be reading more from her.

Throughout this story I felt all the feelings! Happy, sad, frustrated, amongst other feelings hehe. I adored how their story was told in a Christmas setting, it just made it so wholesome. It really makes you think that your Christmas wishes can come true, especially your love wishes!

There was so much connection between the two. It was there from the start and only grew. They built their family, chose each other. I’ll admit, at first I was a bit skeptical but gosh was I wrong.

If you haven’t already, add this one to your Christmas list, it won’t disappoint ❤️‍🔥🎅

Second Down Scrooge is a truly lovely second chance romance. I have not had the opportunity to check out Lisa Suzanne's work before, so this was a lovely treat and I am looking forward to checking out more of her back list. Suzanne's work was easily to engage with and was well paced to keep me interested in what would happen next. I felt like Suzanne developed her character's clearly and beautifully, they were complicated and interesting. Second Down Scrooge does begin in the middle of a relationship between the hero and heroine, and I am not sure how much of their previous interactions we see in other novels. This ultimately was not an issue for me, because this story is really about moving forward from their pasts, taking a leap on a true relationship and building a family together with their infant daughter.

This romance really focus's on the growth of the hero-Austin Graham, who is a pro football player. He is in love with Kelly, the mother of his child, but neither have been able to commit to a true relationship due to trust and things that Austin has done in the past. It is very obvious that the chemistry and tension between these two is off the charts so it is easy to fall in love and root for them. Austin is one of those misunderstood heroes, but he works hard to change himself for the better for Kelly and their daughter Mia. Kelly is a strong and independent heroine, she loves being a single mother and she deep down feels this pull to Austin that is hard to ignore. Her love for her daughter and the softness and ease she sees in the relationship that Austin and Mia has goes a long way with giving her the strength to take a leap of faith in their relationship. This novel has lots of lovely soft and heart warming moments where Austin shows that he can be trusted. It is really wonderful watching these two have this mutual relationship that grows into one of strength, understanding and clarity.

I truly enjoyed this novel and Lisa Suzanne’s writing and would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a holiday, second chance romance between two people who are co-parenting their daughter. This novel is equally sweet and sexy and full of holiday spirit, family and friendship. This is sure to not be my last novel from Suzanne!

Thank you to Valentine PR for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lisa Suzanne has done it again! She has made me absolutely adore a character that had been nothing short of a villain in her other stories proving that she is the queen of character redemption!

Second Down Scrooge is a fabulous second chance holiday romance featuring Austin Graham and his baby mama, Kelly. While this story can be enjoyed as a stand alone, to truly get the whole picture of Austin and appreciate his climb back to Kelly's good graces I highly suggest reading the Nash Brothers series- especially Grayson and Asher's stories- or be highly ambitious and binge ALL the Vegas Aces series too if you haven't already!

I never thought there would be the day that I was swooning over Austin Graham but I swear Lisa loves to reform the villains! I can't say that I minded seeing Austin have to choke down on some humble pie as he worked to rebuild the trust between him and Kelly- but did the man have to be all kinds of perfection while he did it?! I adored Kelly- she is the sweetest friend and mother, her daughter truly became the center of her world and I could appreciate her loyalty to her friends and holding Austin at arms length after all the pain that he caused even if she broke her own heart in the process. She was cautious in letting him back in her life as anything more than Mia's father and her co-parent. She absolutely made him work for every sliver of space in her life and heart and I think it was absolute perfection.

Austin earned it though. Getting some glimpses of his life before of course helped soften my heart toward him and make sense of why he acted the way he did in the past. But Austin made such big strides and changed his approach to be a better person and player which ended up working out for him greatly that I couldn't help but get excited flutters for him. Him with Mia though? Nothing short of adorable and ovary bursting sweetness.

I low key loved this story as a holiday romance- adding the excitement and sometimes loneliness that comes with the holidays just kicked this story up a notch. Austin was obviously a man head over heels if he was out there helping put together Christmas wreaths and wearing matching Christmas sweaters with his girls. And of course the magic of the season making sure that everything works out perfectly for these two!

There's no way that the Aces are done- I can't wait to see what else Lisa will come up with for them next!

My Rating: ❤️❤️❤️❤️

In Short: Fun, cute holiday read.

General Thoughts: I have been on quite the holiday novella kick lately, so I was excited to read this one. A second chance romance with single parents (parents of the same kid) with a lite football/sports background. I think this is my first by this author, and I really enjoyed it. It was more frequently spicy than I expected it to be, too. I enjoyed the author's writing style, and this was a fun, quick read.

Disclaimer: I received a review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thanks to the author and Valentine PR.

Spice Meter:❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Spicy but not overly detailed. Fairly frequent though.

This is my first book I’ve read in this series, and looking at Lisa Suzanne’s backlist, it’s a well developed series with a number of spin-offs. Which is exciting because I love sports romances, even better when we follow a group of characters.

All that to say, I’m glad I hadn’t read about Austin Graham before as I doubt I would have liked him. He needed a major redemption before Kelly would even reconsider him as a prospect. He is a great dad to little Mia though. Those moments made me feel all squishy inside. What I did love was the fact that both Austin and Kelly were willing to work hard for the other person, and I was completely on Austin’s team after his grand gesture.

Will I read this author again? Yes, yes I will. She kept me entertained and whilst the book was short, it was a well rounded story and it made me happy.

Thank you to Valentine PR and Lisa Suzanne for the arc and this is my honest review.

Second down Scrooge is a Christmas Novella that follows Austin and Kelly. Austin is a football player that made some very poor decisions in the past and is now trying to redeeming himself. Austin has used people in the past and made some poor decisions in order to advance himself which caused Kelly to lose trust in him. Kelly is still very attracted to Austin but trying to move on which is hard because they had a daughter together about a year ago named Mia and they tend to see each other on a weekly basis for her sake. While Austin had done some bad things in the past it is for Mia sake that he is trying to be better as he wants to be a good role model and the best father for his daughter. I loved the redemption arc in this story and how Austin becomes better for the people who mean the most to him. Thank you Lisa Suzanne and VPR for a copy of this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I've wondered what Austin and Kelly's story might be from previous books, specifically from Ava's book, and therefore I was so thrilled for this quick little book that gave us their beautiful holiday story almost a year after their daughter was born.

So first off, Lisa Suzanne is an amazing author and crafts incredible stories. She more often than not throws us for anxiety loop at around the third act, so I have like PTSD when reading her books, waiting for that part in the book. But in this book I was so caught up in Kelly and Austin's world and rooting so hard for their HEA!!! And considering up until this point, we've kind of ... hated? ... Austin, and now I found myself on the verge of tears for him? I did not have that on my bingo card! But, my heart!!!! Poor Austin! My heart literally was on the verge of breaking for him. And Kelly is such a beautiful and kind person... the two of them together is just beautiful and this was really a beautifully emotional book. Yes, let me say it one more time: beautiful! It was all so beautiful.

And yes, yes, on top of that it's a holiday book - I'm not sure if it qualifies for a novella - but it's an amazing read! I actually really liked how Lisa incorporated the holidays into this and that made it so much more heartwarming. But the story was just so... ugh. I was on the verge of tears so many times, my heart melted on a number of others, and I wanted to fight and yell a few other times. It was such an unexpectedly deep book at the same time. And little baby Mia, omg she's adorable! And I loved reading how the three of them interacted, it so melted my heart! Whether you're a fan of the Vegas Aces books, or into a holiday book, or are just looking for a great quick read - this is the book for you. Highly recommend.

In two sentences: Single mom. NFL star ex. A Christmas tree—and a second chance? Austin messed up big time, but seeing him with our baby asleep on his chest? I might risk my heart (and my daughter’s) to make him my first pick.

My Review:

🇺🇸 This was sweet, heartwarming, and packed with festive cheer—a great pick for cozy Christmas vibes. Austin and the Kelly’s second-chance journey was emotional and hopeful, with a sprinkle of spice to heat things up. The co-parenting dynamic was handled with care, and their baby added so many adorable moments.

That said, the story felt a bit rushed in parts, and some of the emotional beats didn’t land as deeply as I’d hoped. The tension from their past conflict could’ve been explored more to make their reconciliation feel more impactful. Still, it was an enjoyable read, like sipping on hot chocolate with marshmallows and a dash of cinnamon spice. Perfect for fans of Christmas-themed romances looking for a balance of sweetness and steam.

This is Kelly and Austin’s story,
Austin is the tight end for the Vegas Aces, and a fling with Kelly results is a pregnancy. These two try to make a relationship work between them and end up agreeing to co-parent their little 1-year-old daughter Mia. Austin is determined to redeem himself and convince Kelly they belong together, but will he be able to convince her?
This is a well written easy to read story, which has family, friendships, emotions, trust, redemption, humor, witty banter, palpable chemistry, romance, engaging and relatable characters, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and heartwarming, magical holiday story.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Thank you to Lisa Suzanne & Valentine PR for the ARC of Second Down Scrooge!

Kelly and Austin are so likable! Austin really grew on me as I got further into the book and I’m so happy he got his crap together. Kelly is such a great mom to Mia, always making sure she’s taken care of and loved despite doing 99% of it on her own. Giving Austin a second chance was the best thing she could’ve done for her and Mia. It takes a great man to right his wrongs, realize his faults, apologize for them, and grow. Austin gives “if he wanted to, he would” vibes. Such a great holiday romance novel and a quick read because you won’t want to put it down!

this was such a sweet story! i love single parent romances so much but they’re even better when the couple co-parents with each other! austin & kelly complemented each other really well. getting to see austin’s growth throughout this was so special too

even though it was short, lisa filled it with a lot of content/plot. kelly & austin are characters they we’re already familiar with but if you’re coming into this blind, nothing’s confusing!

Second Down Scrooge was a short, easy read that was just okay for me—not bad, but not a favorite. It had an HEA and no cheating, which is always a plus. The story follows Austin and Kelly, who find themselves navigating co-parenting a baby girl, along with managing his NFL schedule. Austin’s past shady actions—though not directly toward Kelly—created trust issues for her, and understandably so. Now, he’s a changed man, determined to win back the woman he loves and build a life with her and their daughter, chasing the picture-perfect "American dream."

What a sweet Christmas-y redemption story. Following a side character from the Aces series and Kelly, best friend to a heroine from the series, we get more information on Austin and what makes him the rough character we know. And we also get insight into his relationship with Kelly, the complications and frustrations, and ultimately the happy ever after.

I really enjoyed this short and sweet novella that really packed an emotional punch.
