I might have to re-read this book. This is what I wrote when I read it many years ago.

Good characters & writing style. The plot was a little too close to home. Deals with racism against Mexicans and plot to take over Mexico.

Bonnie Hearn Hill was a new author for me. I really enjoyed this investigative mystery.
It the first of a series about a reporter, Geri LaRue. I find that a little odd because she plays a very small role in this book. I'm surprised that was the character that she'll be leading with in the next book. I'm looking forward to reading it, but I guess I kept waiting for a "breakout moment" for Geri in this novel, and I didn't see that. If I hadn't know it was part of a series, that would have entered my mind. Now, I'm curious to see if she pulls any other characters along with Geri. I plan to read the next book, CUTLINE.

I didn't want it to end. That's a silly thing to say about a thriller. Naturally, I was glad everything was resolved, but I had fallen in love with Corina and wanted to walk along with her a while longer--hoping she would stay out of harms way, of course, and find the happiness she deserves.

I had read other books by this author, but I was surprised by the depth of this one. International intrigue and more (I don't want to give away everything). I was also surprised to learn who the bad guys were. Great suspense...right up to the end. Not a dull sentence in the book.

The star rating just about says it--it was okay. There was some confusion as to which man our heroine was choosing. She gets to do the stories that she wants to do--but the price may be too high. THere are several murders, a couple of disappearances, and some people there in California want to invade Mexico. Corina is of Mexican descent, with a mama who wants to marry her off--but she has another daughter's wedding to get thru first. There is some excitement, and an ugly hit man who would like to set her on fire--his trademark. Some things don't hang together well.

It's a very good thriller. I have always been interested with investigative journalism and especially in newspapers and this book really gave me something that I enjoyed. The characters were so well written, and the pace was really nice. It keeps you guessing right until the end.

I enjoyed this, maybe not as much as some of the other books by bonnie but it was good. I think it is a good set up book for the rest of the series.
