What Life Was Like Amid Splendor and Intrigue: Byzantine Empire, AD 330-1453

Rate this book

As history books go, this is relatively slim and large format. It probably qualifies as a coffee-table book, being filled with glossy, full-page pictures. However, as a sourcebook for what life was like during the Byzantium Empire, it is another disappointment.

Too much of the book related the life story of one Emperor or another. Only one chapter offered me anything close to what I was hoping to find, with an exploration of life as a soldier. The history of the empire is better covered in other books, where much greater detail is given.

This book failed to deliver on the promise of its title. I may keep the book for the pictures, but I suspect I can search the internet for similar images. At least I only bought it second-hand.

A slender volume that displays, not so much the whole of life in the Byzantine Empire over a thousand years, but a series of “snapshots.” Each chapter chooses a few figures of significance and uses them as a lens to discuss some aspect of life in Constantinople.

The result is absorbing, but far from comprehensive. Despite being about “the Byzantine Empire,” the book is focused only on Constantinople, and then only on a few people within it.

While the history is sparse, the images dazzle. Amid Splendor and Intrigue is bright and colorful, with a wide-ranging collection of objects, artifacts, paintings, and mosaics to display from across the empire.

I loved the way this book was written and laid out. It was a history book, but written in such an intriguing way. I really enjoyed how it brought ancient times to life in an understandable and relatable way. I wish more history was written like this!

Great pictures, text that veers way more towards historical fiction than fact. Trying to give an overview of 'what life was like' during a 1000 year period is pretty dubious anyway. I would skip it.

What a fascinating look at life in Byzantium during its successful age! This is a look at many areas of life and at people of different classes and stations during that time, and what their lives were like in different ways. This is well-researched and well-written, and is very informative about an area and an age that most people don't know much about.
