I have been using PostgreSQL for many years and was intrigued when I was introduced to this book via our local user group. The author had done a great job introducing PostgreSQL. It is nice to see (again) how easy it is to install PostgreSQL. He is mainly concentrating on its installation using installation packages provided by EnterpriseDB. He does not go into details of getting PostgreSQL running on a 'server' OS, which is perfectly fine given the intended target audience. One can have a running modern RDBMS in less than an hour. I was also impressed by topics he chose for the Top 9 features. These features really showcase strength and maturity of PostgreSQL: pgcrypto extension, storing unstructured data, recursive queries, backup and restore, among others. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to become familiar with PostgreSQL and even for seasoned users and DBAs to rekindle their excitement and interest in this great open source software.

Just went through the book "Instant PostgreSQL Starter", by Daniel Lyons (http://www.packtpub.com/instant-postg...). My first thought on finishing it was - "Is that it ?". The book is really short, at 48 pages in total and about 30 pages if you count only the 'real' content. It is a pretty useful book as it does, in those many pages, take you from installing the database to writing recursive queries. It does seem to have a couple of obvious omissions - references to 2 critical files - pg_hba.conf and postgresql.conf. Half a page each devoted to these two files would have added a lot of value to this short and quick book that gets you up and running with PostgreSQL in a few minutes.

This is a very short book (like 30 pages short) with basically two parts - one is guiding you through the installation of the PostgreSQL (I believe, on Windows box) and the second is showing few tricks like using CTEs for storing hierarchical information, doing full-text search and storing key-value pairs in hstore. Overall, it is nor worth it, unless all you want is just a very cursory overview of PostgreSQL for someone studying like Databases 101. But the book was free on Packt Publishing, so no regrets here.
